Offense Narrative Roles of Turkish Offenders
The study of offense narratives emphasizes the agency of the offender which brings psychology closer to law. As an effort to create a standardized and quantitative method to evaluate offender narratives, Youngs and Canter developed the Narrative Roles Questionnaire (NRQ) based on the content analyses of the crime narratives of offenders in UK prisons. The current study aims to investigate the applicability of offense narrative roles framework among Turkish offenders. The application of the offense narrative roles model to a non-Western country is the first step toward the acceptance of criminal narrative theory as a universal explanation of criminal behavior. A translation of the NRQ was administered to 468 Turkish male inmates who have committed a wide range of offenses from fraud to murder. The results of an MDS analysis yielded four roles, namely Professional, Revenger, Hero, and Victim, echoing the original formulation proposed by Youngs and Canter. The reliability coefficients of scales derived for these roles were all at desired levels. The results support the applicability of the NRQ framework in a non-English context. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: As part of Emek Yuce Zeyrek-Rios’ doctoral research, this study was funded by the Ministry of National Education, Turkey
Synthesis and characterization of magnetic nanocomposite for in vitro evaluation of irinotecan using human cell lines
In this study, magnetic O-carboxymethyl chitosan (MOCC) nanocomposite was synthesized and characterized as a drug
delivery system for loading the anticancer drug irinotecan (CPT-11). To increase the drug loading capacity, MOCC was synthesized by
linking the carboxyl group functionally to chitosan. Also, several critical factors such as concentration, the dose of MOCC, and contact
time for optimum drug loading condition were investigated. The loading capacity of CPT-11 onto MOCC was calculated as 5.6 mg/g,
and the loaded drug concentration was calculated as 0.04787 mM at pH value of 5. Besides, the cytotoxic properties of MOCC, CPT11 loaded MOCC (MOCC-CPT-11), and free CPT-11 were studied on glioblastoma multiforme cell lines, including U87 and U373.
According to the results, the MOCC-CPT-11 showed at least as toxic effect as free CPT-11 even at very low concentrations, while the
MOCC showed slight toxicity (cell viability of 96% to 78%) on U373 cell lines at all concentrations and for 24 h and 48 h incubation
times. Moreover, the results showed that the MOCC indicated significant toxicity in increasing concentrations and incubation times,
and the MOCC-CPT-11 is as toxic as free CPT-11 on U87 cells at all concentrations and incubation times
Hesperetin may alleviate the development of doxorubicin-induced pulmonary toxicity by decreasing oxidative stress and apoptosis in male rats
Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the most widely used chemotherapeutic agents. However, it causes pulmonary toxicity which decreases its clinical use in human cancer therapy. The present study was undertaken to obtain an insight into the potential protective effect of hesperetin (HES) against doxorubicin-induced pulmonary toxicity in rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups with 7 rats per group. The experimental treatments were as follows: Control, DOX, DOX + HES, and HES groups. DOX was administered at the dosage of 15 mg/kg i.p for a single dose. HES was administered at the dosage of 50 mg/kg by oral gavage every other day. After 28 days, biochemical parameters, oxidative stress status, histopathological changes, apoptosis-related genes and apoptotic index (AI) were examined of lung tissue. Histopathological changes, Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase 1 (PARP-1), Caspase-3 (Casp3), Cytochrome c (Cytc), apoptosis-related genes, and AI significantly increased in the DOX group relative to the control group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) significantly increased, while superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) decreased in the DOX group relative to the control group. However, histopathological findings, MDA, AI, and PAPR1, Casp3 protein expression, mRNA expression of Cytc significantly decreased, while SOD, GPx increased in the DOX + HES group relative to the DOX group. These results attested HES might be a potential agent for the treatment of DOX-induced pulmonary toxicity
A new approach for the fractional integral operator in time scales with variable exponent lebesgue spaces
Integral equations and inequalities have an important place in time scales and harmonic analysis. The norm of integral operators is one of the important study topics in harmonic analysis. Using the norms in different variable exponent spaces, the boundedness or compactness of the integral operators are examined. However, the norm of integral operators on time scales has been a matter of curiosity to us. In this study, we prove the equivalence of the norm of the restricted centered fractional maximal diamond-α integral operator Mca,δ to the norm of the centered fractional maximal diamond-α integral operator Mca on time scales with variable exponent Lebesgue spaces. This study will lead to the study of problems such as the boundedness and compactness of integral operators on time scales
Contemporary Approaches to the Philosophy of Ishraq and Illuminationism in Today's Iran
This study deals with the course of Ishraq philosophy that emerged in
the 12th century in Iran today. The philosophy of Ishraq, which was discussed in
the context of contrasts and syntheses by his early commentaries after
Suhrawardi, has continued in the historical process and has been shaped by different social, political and intellectual factors in every period it is dealt with. It
is possible to say that the philosophy of Ishraq, which is still living in Iran today,
is considered the most important component of the Molla Sadra school. In this
study, which emphasizes that the philosophy of Ishraq, which has an important
role in shaping the philosophical-intellectual life of Iran, is a kind of "border"
philosophy, it is also emphasized that Islamic philosophy is not an archaic field
and that Ishraq philosophy is still one of the most important sources when responding to the philosophical problems we face today
Motivations and experiences of tourists visiting Hasankeyf as a last chance tourism destination
The present study investigates the motivations and experiences of tourists visiting Hasankeyf–a historic district in the Batman province, situated in the southeast region of Turkey–as a last chance tourism (LCT) destination that has recently been submerged with the entry into operation of Ilısu Dam. A mixed-methods approach is employed for the study, in which quantitative data was collected via a survey filled out by visitors (n = 429) to the Hasankeyf heritage site, while qualitative data was obtained from the online reviews left by visitors (n = 78). The findings reveal that motivations to visit the site relate mostly to the ‘heritage’ and ‘last chance’ dimensions of the site. The study results reveal further that the motivation and the perception of authenticity are key indicators of a memorable tourism experience. Further implications are offered, along with recommendations for future research. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group
Turkey Long-Term Energy Consumption Prediction Using Whale Optimization Algorithm
Energy is one of the most important topics for the sustainable development of countries. Due to the fact that the energy used can be depleted, it imports many energy sources, and environmental factors, it is of great importance for Turkey to predict how much energy needs may be in the future. In this study, whale optimization algorithm (BOA) was preferred from heuristic algorithms in order to be able to estimate Turkey's energy demand until 2040. In order to determine the performance of the whale optimization algorithm, the results were compared with the genetic algorithm (GA). All models are arranged linearly and squared and the result is obtained. Data for independent variables such as gross domestic product (GDP), population, imports and exports affecting energy demand were used between 1990 and 2019. Modeling of the past 30 years has been provided to calculate the accuracy of the results. After obtaining the most suitable model, calculations were made according to 4 different scenarios for the next 20 year
Design and Implementation of a Maximum Power Point Tracking System for a Piezoelectric Wind Energy Harvester Generating High Harmonicity
In this work, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) system for its application to a new piezoelectric wind energy harvester (PWEH) has been designed and implemented. The motivation for such MPPT unit comes from the power scales of the piezoelectric layers being in the order of μW. In addition, the output generates highly disturbed voltage waveforms with high total harmonic distortion (THD), thereby high THD values cause a certain power loss at the output of the PWEH system and an intense motivation is given to design and implement the system. The proposed MPPT system is widely used for many different harvesting studies, however, in this paper it has been used at the first time for such a distorted waveform to our best knowledge. The MPPT consists of a rectifier unit storing the rectified energy into a capacitor with a certain voltage called VOC (i.e., the open circuit voltage of the harvester), then a dc-dc converter is used with the help of the MPPT unit using the half of VOC as the critical value for the performance of the control. It has been demonstrated that the power loss is nearly half of the power for the MPPT-free system, the efficiency has been increased with a rate of 98% and power consumption is measured as low as 5.29 μ
Research on the effects of L-carnitine and trans-chalcone on endoplasmic reticulum stress and oxidative stress in high-fructose corn syrup-fed rats
Purpose: The debate on the metabolic effects of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) continues. The deterioration of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) homeostasis is called ER stress. Glucose-regulated protein-78 (GRP-78) and X-box binding protein-1 (XBP-1) are key markers of ER stress and the therapeutic targets of diseases. Sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) is the most important transcription factor that regulates the expression of enzymes for fatty acid synthesis. The purpose of this paper is to research the effects of L-carnitine and trans-chalcone on ER stress and oxidative stress parameters, and to explore the therapeutic potential of L-carnitine and trans-chalcone molecules. Design/methodology/approach: Forty male wistar albino rats randomly selected were divided into five groups. All groups are fed with standard chow (ad libitum). While Group I was fed with drinking water, Group II, III, IV and V were fed with water containing 15% HFCS. L-carnitine was given to Group IV and trans-chalcone to Group V, and both were dissolved with DMSO and given intraperitoneally. Group III was not given anything additional. Findings: While the amount of water consumption of HFCS-fed rats has increased, the amount of feed consumption has decreased. The weights of rats in Group II and Group III have increased significantly compared to Group I (p = 0.001, p = 0.001 respectively). In Group III, GRP78, XBP-1; malondialdehyde level (p < 0.001, p = 0.001, p = 0.041); total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL levels (p = 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.009, p = 0.001, respectively) have increased significantly. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first report to show that excessive HFCS consumption causes oxidative stress and ER stress. The antioxidant and antiobesity properties of trans chalcone have been demonstrated. Extensive experimental and clinical studies should be conducted. This study was supported by a grant from Gaziosmanpasa University, Tokat, Scientific Research Projects Commission Presidency (Project No: 2016/90)
