ORGANIC AMENDMENTS AND NANO-MICRONUTRIENTS RESTORE SOIL PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND BOOST WHEAT YIELD UNDER SALINE ENVIRONMENT
Ensuring food security under climate change scenario requisites amending degraded soils and sustainably boost staple crops yield in a biologically viable way through effective plant nutrition management strategies. Two multi-year lysimeter experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of soil organic substances and foliar application of some nano-nutrients on soil properties and wheat yield under saline conditions. The experiment was executed in split plot with three replications. Treatments included organic amendments (molasses, compost tea, K-humate, molasses+ compost tea, molasses+K-humate, compost tea+ K-humate and molasses+K-humate+Compost tea and control) in main plots, while sub plots had nano-micronutrients (nano-selenium, nano-manganese and nano-silica) and a control treatment. The results showed that physio-chemical properties (bulk density, cation exchange capacity, electrical conductivity etc.) of the soil were significantly influenced by all organic amendments; however, co-application of molasses+K-humate+compost tea remained unmatched. The same treatment combination also remained effective in boosting nitrogen uptake and recovery along with wheat yield during both seasons. Among foliage applied nano micronutrients, silicon remained superior by recording the highest yield attributes and grain yield of wheat. Therefore, it is inferred that co-application of organic amendments and foliage applied nano-fertilization management could be developed as an effective approach to restore and conserve the soil and increase wheat productivity under saline environment of arid and semi-arid regions
Negotiating empire in the Middle East: Ottomans and Arab Nomads in the modern era, 1840- 1914
Historians of the Ottoman Empire have overwhelmingly undermined the roles that tribes played
and marginalized them without having sufficient focus on their activities in their studies. The
current literature approaches the nomads of the empire as absolute losers of the modernizing
period of the Tanzimat and later periods
High level of fluctuating asymmetry in the Byzantine dogs from the Theodosius Harbor, Istanbul, Turkey
Asymmetry, the abnormality of an organism or a part of it from its perfect symmetry, is represented by three different categories:
fluctuating asymmetry, directional asymmetry, and antisymmetry. Fluctuating asymmetry attributes to random developmental variation
of a morphological character, whereas directional asymmetry attributes one of the body sides to be more prominent than the other.
Antisymmetry appears whenever one body side of a biological body shows greater morphological appearance than the other. Since
more environmental stress often produces greater effect of fluctuating asymmetry, it can be a good indicator of physiological stress in the
morphological characteristic of a biological being. Applying, so far, the first geometric morphometric methods on any Byzantine fauna,
this study aimed to determine the kind and direction of skull asymmetry occurred in Byzantine dog skulls. Aiming this, asymmetries in
16 adult Byzantine dog skulls unearthed form Yenikapı-Marmaray excavation (ancient Theodosius Harbor) in İstanbul, were compared
with 39 adult skulls of modern pet dog breeds. Seventeen landmarks (3 midline and 14 bilateral) were selected on the digital pictures of
the ventral aspect of each skull, and used for detailed analysis. The results showed a greater percentage of fluctuating asymmetry in the
Byzantine dog skulls, suggesting them not to be the remains of pets or housed dogs but perhaps the labor or stray dogs in the Byzantine
capital Constantinople
Self-esteem and perceived social competence protect adolescent students against ostracism and loneliness
The purpose of this research was to examine the associations between self-esteem, perceived social competence, ostracism and loneliness among adolescent students. For the investigation of self-esteem and perceived social competence as key developmental constructs concerning negative experiences such as ostracism and loneliness, it is important to understand the experiences that may inhibit individual development in adolescence. Participants were 542 presecondary and secondary school students who completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Perceived Social Competence Scale, the Ostracism Experience Scale for Adolescents, and the Loneliness Scale for Children. The data were analysed with Pearson moments correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings showed that: (1) self-esteem, perceived social competence, ostracism and loneliness were related to each other; (2) self-esteem and perceived social competence were negatively related to ostracism and loneliness; (3) ostracism had a positive relationship with loneliness and a negative impact on self-esteem; and (4) an increase in the level of perceived social competence predicted a decrease in the levels of ostracism and loneliness. The results were discussed in the light of relevant literature
The effects of production methods on the color characteristics, capsaicinoid content and antioxidant capacity of pepper spices (C. annuum L.)
The effects of production methods for red pepper flakes (RPF) and traditional (TRI) and industrial (INI) isot spices were evaluated with respect to the carotenoid and capsaicinoid contents, extractable color (ASTA color), surface color parameters, nonenzymatic browning (NEB), and the DPPH free radical-scavenging capacity of fresh red Capsicum (FRC). The measured characteristics were significantly affected by the processing methods used. RPF exhibited the highest antioxidant activity and best color quality in terms of carotenoid content, which was the highest; ASTA value; surface color intensity; and NEB, which was the lowest. In contrast, INI-processing methods resulted in poor color quality, causing the maximum increase in NEB. The concentration of capsaicinoid increased at the end of TRI processing, whereas it decreased in the two other methods. These results suggest that the traditional production method for isots prevents excessive destruction of their color attributes and contributes to the desirable characteristic browning. This study was supported by The Southeastern Anatolia Project Regional Development Administration, Republic of Turkey Ministry of Industry and Technology (Project: GAP-ISOT) and Harran University Scientific Research Institutions (HUBAK Project No: 14010). Níveis séricos de YKL-40 em pacientes com esclerose múltipla
Background:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system. The YKL-40 protein, which is secreted from various cells that contribute to inflammation and infection, plays a role in immune regulation.
Objective:
This study investigated the serum YKL-40 levels of patients with clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and MS.
Methods:
The participants was divided into three groups: 1) patients with CIS (n = 20); 2) patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS; n = 39); and 3) healthy individuals (n = 35). The YKL-40 levels in serum samples obtained from the participants were measured using enzyme-linked immunoassays.
Results:
The median serum YKL-40 level was 20.2 ng/mL (range 9.8-75.9 ng/mL) in the patients with CIS, 22.7 ng/mL (range 13.4-57.9 ng/mL) in the patients with RRMS and 11.0 ng/mL (range 10.0-17.3 ng/mL) in the control group (p 0.05). The serum YKL-40 levels were higher in the CIS group than in the MS group. These findings show that the serum YKL-40 levels were high even at the beginning of the disease. The serum YKL-40 levels were also not involved in the progression to clinically definite MS.
Conclusions:
The findings from this study suggested that YKL-40 may be a useful marker for the inflammatory process of MS
Comparative Study of Lipid and Fatty Acid Profile in Liver Tissues of Male and Female Silurus triostegus During the Catching Seasons
In this study, seasonal variations of total fatty acid (FA), phospholipid (PL) and triacylglycerol (TAG) compositions in liver tissues of catfish (Silurus triostegus) were investigated. Samples of S. triostegus were obtained from Atatürk Dam Lake, Turkey, in two month periods during one year as from May. The major components were palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1n-9), palmi toleic acid (16:1n-7), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) in total lipid, 16:0, 18:0, 18:1n-9, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), DHA and AA in PL, 16:0, 16:1n7, 18:1n-9, linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6), AA, EPA, DHA and docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-3) in TAG extracted from the liver of S. triostegus in all seasons. N-3/n-6 ratio was found 2.00-2.61 in females, 1.15-2.75 in males in total lipid. The highest lipid content was found in May (2.39%) in the females. In the males, the highest level was found in September (2.91%). In TAG fraction, the component with the lowest ratio in both sexes’ TAG is PUFA. In PL fraction, SFA, MUFA, and PUFA percentages were found at similar rates in both sexes in all months
Fabrication and characterization of 3,4-diaminobenzophenone-functionalized magnetic nanoadsorbent with enhanced VOC adsorption and desorption capacity
The present study, for the first time, utilized 3,4-diaminobenzophenone (DABP)-functionalized Fe3O4/AC@SiO2 (Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized as a nanoadsorbent for enhancing adsorption and desorption capacity of gaseous benzene and toluene as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP MNPs used in adsorption and desorption of benzene and toluene were synthesized by the co-precipitation and sol-gel methods. The synthesized MNPs were characterized by SEM, FTIR, TGA/DTA, and BET surface area analysis. Moreover, the optimization of the process parameters, namely contact time, initial VOC concentration, and temperature, was performed by applying response surface methodology (RSM). Adsorption results demonstrated that the Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP MNPs had excellent adsorption capacity. The maximum adsorption capacities for benzene and toluene were found as 530.99 and 666.00 mg/g, respectively, under optimum process parameters (contact time 55.47 min, initial benzene concentration 17.57 ppm, and temperature 29.09 °C; and contact time 57.54 min, initial toluene concentration 17.83 ppm, and temperature 27.93 °C for benzene and toluene, respectively). In addition to the distinctive adsorptive behavior, the Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP MNPs exhibited a high reproducibility adsorption and desorption capacity. After the fifth adsorption and desorption cycles, the Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP MNPs retained 94.4% and 95.4% of its initial adsorption capacity for benzene and toluene, respectively. Kinetic and isotherm findings suggested that the adsorption mechanisms of benzene and toluene on the Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP MNPs were physical processes. The results indicated that the successfully synthesized Fe3O4/AC@SiO2@DABP MNPs can be applied as an attractive, highly effective, reusable, and cost-effective adsorbent for the adsorption of VOC pollutants.
