The use of adjustment weights in voter surveys. Correcting for panel attrition and nonresponse can produce less accurate estimates of voting behavior
Declining response rates make it harder to justify survey data as adequately representative. Adjustment weighting is often used to address this problem, but the premise of that approach is that people within a specific social category who respond to a survey are representative of those that do not. This paper compares selfreported voting in a low response panel survey and a “gold standard” national election survey, with the actual election result in the Norwegian parliamentary election in 2017, and estimate the effects of various inverse probability weights. The results indicate that the panel sample becomes less accurate in predicting the election result when weighted for age than without the use of such a weight. Young adults who respond to surveys may not be representative of this age group as a whole, especially in low response panel surveys. The use of adjustment weights in voter surveys. Introducing the Party-interest group relationships in contemporary democracies datasets
Few existing datasets on parties and interest groups include data from both sides and a wide variety of interest groups and parties. We contribute to filling this gap by making several interconnected new datasets publicly available. The Party-Interest Group Relationships in Contemporary Democracies (PAIRDEM) datasets include cross-national data from three different surveys of (1) central party organizations, (2) legislative party groups, and (3) interest groups. A fourth dataset based on coding of party statutes and party finance data was established together with the Political Party Database. The datasets contain novel indicators on party-group relationships in up to 21 mature democracies. In this research note, we first present the main content of the datasets and the research design. Second, we present descriptive statistics documenting the extent of organizational ties between parties and groups in contemporary democracies. Third, we illustrate more advanced usage through a simple application.publishedVersio
Right-wing ideological constraint and vaccine refusal: The case of the COVID-19 vaccine in Norway
Research has shown a correlation between votes for populist parties and the belief that vaccines are not important or effective. More recent investigations in the United States and France have similarly shown that attitudes toward the COVID-19 vaccine have been politicized. In this article, we show a similar pattern analyzing survey data from Norway, a country relatively mildly hit by the pandemic and characterized by high trust and a consensual political culture. We find that refusal to vaccinate is associated with right-wing ideological constraint, even when considering a wide array of control variables (e.g., lack of confidence, complacency), and sociodemographic characteristics. The results imply that vaccine refusal latch onto established political cleavages, particularly among the most ideologically consistent. Thus, polarization in the form of increasing ideological constraint may represent a mounting challenge for vaccine uptake, suggesting that vaccine communication should go beyond “explaining the science” and factor in ideology.publishedVersio
Public and publicly funded cultural institutions: Challenges of paid and voluntary work in cultural institutions, cultural professional quality and privacy protection in volunteering
This report analyzes six types of cultural institutions - library, museum, performing arts, music, visual arts and archives – and targets three main topics: 1) paid versus voluntary work in cultural institutions, 2) ensuring cultural professional quality in voluntary work through exchange of experiences and networks, and 3) how cultural institutions manage privacy regulations and personal data in their voluntary work. These three topics are not randomly selected but identified in interviews with managers and employees and volunteers at cultural institutions in prior projects related to this report. The report draws on data from an electronic survey sent to the entire population of public and publicly funded cultural institutions within the six type of cultural institutions. In addition to offer new knowledge about these topics in cultural institutions, the report aims to contribute to policy development for cultural institutions and government. Moreover, the report intends to identify knowledge gap that should be examined by future studies.publishedVersio
Frivillige aktørers roller i områdesatsinger: En kunnskapsoversikt

Gaps and Silences: Gender and Climate Policies in the Global North
For decades, feminist activists and scholars have stressed the importance of integrating gender perspectives into the most defining challenge of our time: the climate disaster. In this article, we analyze official Norwegian policy documents in the context of regional and supra-national levels. We identify a lack of connection between gender equality policy and climate policy in the Norwegian policy documents that is symptomatic of a general silence on gender in climate policy in the Global North. We argue that there is untapped potential for gender mainstreaming in Norwegian climate policy and suggest that gendered, disaggregated data on climate issues could be combined with scholarly insights about the Nordic gender equality model so as to further our understanding of the climate crisis. Finally, we ask whether the absence of gender perspectives in Norwegian climate policy may reflect an unrecognized contradiction between Nordic gender equality policy and sustainability.Gaps and Silences: Gender and Climate Policies in the Global NorthacceptedVersio
