The project explores the cultural and historical connections between Carriacou, Grenada, and Huddersfield, UK, drawing on the 1950s migration of Carriacou people to Britain. As the Cultures of Programme theme this year is Creative Health, we asked Matheson how the collaborative processes of making the works in Huddersfield (the Town) and Grenada (the Island) benefited the health of the participants.     lovemusic is a collective of musicians from Strasbourg that specialises in contemporary music. Through their work, they aim to enrich the musical world with new and exciting pieces. They collaborate closely with artists from a wide range of disciplines to create new music together, with both composers and performers actively involved in the creative process. Their goal is to dismantle patriarchal and hierarchical structures within the world of contemporary music. They foster a safe and inclusive environment in which the musicians themselves decide what they contribute to each project, which music they perform and which composers they wish to work with.lovemusic was founded in 2018 by Adam Starkie and Emiliano Gavito in Strasbourg, a new music hub in the heart of Europe. The collective takes its name from the eponymous work by Betsy Jolas, which was the starting point of their musical collaboration. They began by creating a new music concert series at the Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg, which became the epicentre of experimentation for the collective, inviting composers and musicians to create new music presented in various formats. The lovemusic family and its repertoire grew, its European identity reinforced by the diversity of its members.     The nitrogen-vacancy defect in Si<sub>1-x</sub>Ge<sub>x</sub>

    Defect processes and energetics in semiconducting alloys is scientifically and technologically important as silicon germanium (Si1 − xGex) is a mainstream nanoelectronic material. It is established that point defects and defect clusters have an increasing role in the physical properties of Si1 − xGex particularly with the ever-decreasing critical dimensions of nanoelectronic devices. Nitrogen-vacancy defects in Si1 − xGex are bound and have the potential to change the optical and electronic properties and thus need to be investigated as absolute control is required in nanoelectronic devices. The nitrogen-vacancy defects are not extensively studied in Si1 − xGex random semiconductor alloys. Here we employ density functional theory (DFT) in conjunction with the special quasirandom structures (SQS) method to calculate the binding energies of substitutional nitrogen-vacancy pairs (NV) in Si1 − xGex alloys. This is a non-trivial problem as the energetics of these defect pairs are dependent upon the nearest neighbour Ge concentration and the composition of Si1 − xGex. The criterion for NV stability is binding energy and here it is shown that the most bound NV defects will form in high Si-content Si1 − xGex alloys.</p

    Nihilistic Creation:From Ramones to the Early American Hardcore Punk in an Age of Diminishing Expectations

    This article explores hardcore punk as a form of nihilistic creation—an approach that goes far beyond its usual characterisation as simply a faster, harder form of punk rock. From an existential perspective, the hardcore punk movement embodies the nihilism of its time, notably in the temporal structure of the songs, thereby forging a singular aesthetic. While the radical simplification introduced by the Ramones paved the way, it was through bands such as Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Bad Brains and D.R.I. that the phenomenon took a more definite shape, using condensed temporality, rhythmic breaks and lack of progression, while maintaining a basic pop-song structure—thus simultaneously calling into question the very idea of innovation. This nihilism gave rise to an aesthetic of urgency, in which temporality became a vehicle for protest. This article therefore proposes a rereading of nihilism as a paradoxical form of creation, redefining the link between music and meaning.</p

    Investigation of the Effect of Turboexpander on NOx Emissions

    As climate changes become more severe and the transition towards sustainability goals more important than ever, the need to modify our vehicles and their thermal management systems takes priority. The vast majority of Original Engine Manufacturers might be looking at the electrification of most vehicles, but it is equally important to make sure that our Internal Combustion Engine powered vehicles become more sustainable since most of our heavy transport is powered by ICEs. The biggest disadvantage of an ICE-powered vehicle is its emissions output. The engine emissions regulations have become stringent over the past few years leading to an increased emphasis on NOx reduction techniques. Air Cycle Technology (ACT) has created a novel form of turboexpander which has previously been tested by ACT in race car engines to reduce pre-ignition. This current work being reported has been carried out to prove the useability of the ACT turboexpander in diesel engines to reduce NOx formation by cooling the intake air. The engine used for this study is a 4.4-liter JCB-TCA 74 turbocharged diesel engine. The ACT turboexpander was retrofitted to the JCB engine. During the study performed on the JCB engine, second-stage cooling provided by the turboexpander showed a reduction of approximately 30° C in intake air temperatures. This data was also supported by hand calculations performed using empirical formulas

    This is the third special issue that Clear+Park (C+P) have edited for AIS, and working with them has once again been a hugely enjoyable experience. In all our collaborations, we have enjoyed enormous freedom in the type of projects that can be included, especially the license to mix practice-based projects and speculative approaches alongside more traditional academic text-led pieces.In this edition, we look at the technologies of digital capture: 3D scanning, photogrammetry and depth, and motion detecting technologies. The introduction of these instrumental forms of capture has allowed highly accurate processes by which objects and spaces can be surveyed, mapped and digitised. Currently, this information is predominantly used to catalogue, record and document spaces and artefacts as part of a digital project workflow, often within a construction or heritage context

    Assessing the economic feasibility and environmental sustainability of 3D printed dysphagic food

    3D-printing of food is an emerging technology that has great potential not only to leading to more efficient food production with less waste but also for developing functional foods, suitable for consumers with specific medical conditions such as dysphagia. An aspect that has not been addressed so far, though, is its environmental performance compared to conventional food production and the potential economic benefits of decentralised 3D-printing of food. We have examined the case of a care home which hosts between 10 and 30 dysphagic residents, with specific dietary requirements, and assessed three alternative scenarios: (a) decentralised 3D printed dysphagic food; (b) centralised 3D printed dysphagic food, distributed to the care home; and (c) centralised conventionally prepared dysphagic food. The analysis has shown that 3D-printing of dysphagic food has a better environmental performance compared to conventionally prepared food, with a 5–13 % improvement in all the midpoint impact indicators. Moreover, the purchase of a 3D-printer by the case home for decentralised production of dysphagic food can be a profitable investment, with the price of conventionally prepared food being the main parameter affecting the decision. A commercial purchase price conventionally prepared food higher than £3.80 per portion of 250 g will definitely render such an investment economically viable, while prices as low as £3.25 can also lead to a viable investment, when the number of residents increases
