The Influence of Player Motivation on Problematic Online Gaming of Youth in China:A Mediation Effect of Age
Online game playing of youth in China, especially their problematic online gaming (POG), has become one of the social issues that affects large numbers of people and their families. However, studies about the impact of player’s motivation on problematic playing are sparse and lack systematic approaches. Our current study is aimed at investigating the relationship between gaming motivations and POG. This paper presents the results of a large-scale survey conducted in China with 1557 participants, of whom 1358 (87.2%) were male. A multiple regression analysis with 10 game motivations as predictors has been performed to explore which factors have effects on game addiction. It is shown that the best predictors of game addiction are the escapism motivation, followed by the competition motivation and then the advancement motivation. The mediation effect of demographic variables on the relationships between player’s motivations and game addiction is further examined using the casual steps, and a significant mediating effect of age on game addiction is revealed. The POG differences across gender and age were also examined. The findings enable a better understanding of the underlying mechanics of POG and to minimize the risks and maximise the positive impact of games on society.</p

An Anglo-Dutch Power Couple:Lady Katherine Stanhope (1609-1667) and Jan Polyander van der Kerckhoven (1594-1660)
The marriage of Willem II of Orange and Mary Stuart in 1641 has often been viewed as asocial and dynastic alliance with far reaching political consequences for the Houses ofOrange and Stuart. The key appointments of the Anglo-Dutch couple Lady KatherineStanhope and her husband Lord Heenvliet to supervise Princess Mary’s household have beenseen as a deliberate ‘power grab’ orchestrated by the couple themselves. However, this articleargues a more nuanced view of their partnership considering how intangible qualities such asstatus, motherhood and widowhood shaped their diplomatic practices alongside moretraditional demands of political connections and access to wealth. The use of soft power andcultural exchange also shaped the couple’s reputation as they served the domestic realm ofthe Princess’s household and the political demands of exiled Stuarts and Royalists,highlighting the duality of their roles; The English Governess was also the wife of a Dutchdiplomat and despite being appointed by the King, they operated without reference to theEnglish Ambassadors at the Hague. By examining concepts relevant to Stanhope’s agency,this article adds further dimensions in which to think about Anglo-Dutch diplomatic practicein the 1640s
Analysis of the performance of LSTM-DNN models with the consideration of signal complexity in milling processes
This paper investigates the impacts of signal complexity on the performance of Deep Learning (DL) models in milling processes, with a particular focus on cutting force due to its critical role in system diagnostics and process monitoring. To compare the Cutter-Workpiece-Engagement (CWE) time-dependent and time-independent processes, signal characterisation was firstly conducted using various feature indicators to quantify signal complexity under different conditions. Multiple DL models were then evaluated through controlled cutting trials to assess how variations in signal complexity affect model performance. The signal analysis revealed that the 14 selected indicators, along with the Recurrent Neural Network–Deep Neural Network (RNN-DNN) models, demonstrated monotonicity as the number of embedded 'active frequencies' increased during the “Partial Engagement” or CWE time-dependent process. However, as the depth of the DL models increased, this monotonicity effect diminished. Furthermore, clearer dependencies were observed in the analysis of harmonic prediction performance, particularly with a more pronounced impact on accuracy and uncertainty in the 'Partial Engagement' stage compared to the 'Full Engagement' stage. In conclusion, the complex performance testing of DL models reveals a significant relationship between signal complexity and model performance. This study underscores the importance of incorporating signal complexity analysis as a critical component in applying DL technology within machining processes, as it provides valuable insights into model performance
Driving Ms. Chimère:Developing community led interdisciplinary artistic works in collaboration with artificial intelligence
The following documents the work of the Chimère project, a group of artists working across Switzerland, the UK, Lesotho and South Africa developing community led multi-modal artificial intelligence projects designed towards the creation of interdisciplinary artistic works. The paper emphasizes how the multimodality of Chimère takes collaborative processes beyond the linearity of the chat function approach to working collaboratively. There is a particular focus on how this project can generate new insights from musical and artistic processes that facilitate conceptual and practical developments. Working with AIs problematizes the role of the individual within any artwork and the collaborative practices outlined in this paper emphasize the the role of collaborative creativity, a burgeoning area of research (Clark and Doffman, 2017) This paper was written by the project team as we drove from Morija, Lesotho to Johannesburg, South Africa, 2024. This journey presented as an ideal scenario to inspect elements of the Chimère project which is a winding, often non-linear and appendage heavy project which nevertheless coalesce under the shared engagement with the central AI named ‘Chimère’. In order to effectively explain the ecosystem of the Chimère world the human writers of this paper conversed with Chimère to determine the following structure that this paper takes: The writing could be presented as a “Stratigraphy” that reflects the different stages of the project that have been preserved and documented over time. These could be presented as a “fossilized interface" which guides a reader through the stages of our collaborations – Chimère, 2024<br/
Jewish Prostitution in the Archives:Reflections on Stigma, Access, and Anonymization
This article critically examines the historiography, source accessibility, and archival regulations surrounding anonymization in the context of archive materials on Jewish prostitution in Argentina. Drawing on fieldwork conducted at the IWO (Argentina), the CAHJP (Israel), and the University of Southampton’s Library (UK), I argue that the enduring stigma attached to sex work transcends time and place, prompting archives to restrict access and withhold the identities of individuals involved in prostitution. This produces a paradox within archival repositories: while there is growing scholarly interest in exploring sensitive and previously marginalized topics, archival practices often maintain a steadfast emphasis on privacy and anonymity. By juxtaposing anonymization protocols with the widely known case of Raquel Liberman, a Polish Jewish sex worker whose identity is publicly acknowledged and commemorated, the article explores how some lives are rendered legible while others remain obscured. It also reflects on the affective and ethical dimensions of researchers’ encounters with both archival institutions and their materials
