    Police social media appeals:how pertinent are criminal offence and offender characteristics in their success?

    Purpose The utilisation of Facebook is now part of contemporary policing within the UK; however, to date the evidence base to fully understand its effectiveness in different types of criminal investigations is lacking. This paper aims to expand this body of research to better understand the use of Facebook, specifically within investigative appeals, by exploring the influence of crime types and offender demographics to further understand whether these factors influence public engagement. Design/methodology/approach This study takes an experimental approach utilising vignettes of hypothetical criminal investigation social media appeals. In total, 112 UK participants were placed into four groups, and each viewed a different hypothetical offender, with altered age and gender demographics, for five investigative appeals which included five different crime types. After viewing each vignette, participants were asked to answer a series of questions regarding their likely engagement with the appeals. Findings The findings of this experimental paper enhance the literature by providing an insight into which appeals are likely to receive the greatest benefit from a post on social media. The key findings within this study indicate that offender demographics do not influence potential engagement with police social media appeals, but the crime type does. Practical implications The empirical evidence from this study has created a deeper insight for police services regarding the utilisation of police social media, by demonstrating that the success of police investigation social media appeals may be influenced by content, specifically the exhibited crime type. Originality/value Previous academic research surrounding engagement with police social media appeals has largely focused on missing individuals. This paper aims to bridge this gap by looking deeper into the use of Facebook for criminal investigation appeals, to develop an understanding surrounding the influence of offence and offender characteristics on the success of such appeals.</p

    Furlough and employee turnover:unveiling the hidden costs of relative deprivation and the moderating role of autonomy support

    The study develops and empirically tests a moderated mediation framework that studies the intricate relationships between furlough-induced financial and psychological costs, relative deprivation, job turnover intentions, and the moderating roles of self-efficacy and autonomy support. In particular, we combine Relative Deprivation Theory (RDT) and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory to elucidate why resource losses create subjective experiences of disadvantage through social and temporal comparisons, thus triggering turnover. The Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT) is used to theorize the autonomy support as a moderator and understand how organizational practices meeting the autonomy need (i.e., offering choice, understanding, and acknowledgement) can shape the psychological process of deprivation to turnover. The findings validate substantial effects of furlough-induced costs on turnover, which are mediated by relative deprivation. To our surprise, autonomy support enhanced, rather than reduced, the detrimental effect of relative deprivation, indicating that increased understanding and acknowledgment within organizations may lead to higher leaving intentions. This emphasizes the critical importance of managing employees’ psychological experiences during furlough using cautious communication techniques

    Laplacian mesh smoothing with bilateral weights for characterization of freeform surfaces

    Freeform surfaces are widely used in advanced manufacturing due to their versatility, yet their complex geometries make characterization challenging. To do a surface texture analysis, it is often necessary to first remove the form of the surface. When the nominal form is unknown, the reference form can be approximated by filtration. If a triangular mesh represents the freeform surface, mesh smoothing is a type of filtration. Among various methods, Laplacian smoothing is the most employed for mesh smoothing due to its linear simplicity. Traditional Laplacian smoothing techniques use uniform, distance, or cotangent weights to approximate the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator for each vertex. However, Laplacian smoothing has limitations, such as accuracy, shrinkage effects, and edge blurring. This study first investigates and compares Gaussian convolution and Laplacian smoothing techniques, aiming to integrate their advantages. Based on these findings, a novel approach is proposed to enhance Laplacian mesh smoothing by introducing a bilateral weighting scheme for each vertex. This enhancement keeps the simplicity of the Laplacian smoothing structure while mitigating the limitations of traditional weighting functions, offering improved performance in terms of accuracy and efficiency. The proposed method demonstrates potential for better estimating reference forms for freeform surfaces, which is the first step for surface characterization in advanced manufacturing.</p

    GFRP-Reinforced Masonry Ring Beams for Existing Buildings:A Case Study

    Ring beams play an important role in enhancing the overall structural response of existing masonry buildings by improving their box-like behavior, preventing out-of-plane wall overturning mechanisms of wall panels during seismic events and in connecting walls. This study introduces a specific construction technique that utilizes brickwork ring beams made of GFRP meshes and pultruded flat fiberglass elements. This innovative approach ensures an effective connection between the roof structure and the ring beam, as well as between the ring beam and the underlying masonry, while also facilitating efficient on-site implementation. This study demonstrates their potential as an effective seismic retrofit solution for existing masonry constructions. As a case study, the consolidation project for the Castle of Fossa, near L’Aquila in Italy, is presented, demonstrating the practical effectiveness of this reinforcement approach. The paper examines various connection solutions for different structural elements—gable walls, internal load-bearing walls, and eaves overhangs—through detailed construction drawings, highlighting the effectiveness and adaptability of this method in real-world scenarios

    Self-management of type 2 diabetes using a co-designed text based mobile health (mHealth) intervention in Nepal:A study protocol for randomised controlled trial

    Mobile health (mHealth) is increasingly being used for managing chronic diseases proving its feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness in improving the health outcomes. However, effectiveness of mHealth intervention for self-management of Type 2 diabetes remains unexplored in the context of Nepal. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a co-designed text based mobile health intervention for self-management of Type 2 diabetes in Nepal. We will conduct a six month, two arm (1:1) parallel group randomised control trial involving 154 adults with Type 2 diabetes. The primary outcome includes change in haemoglobin A1c level at six months follow up. Secondary outcomes include change in self-management outcomes such as self-efficacy, perceived support, diabetes related stress, health related quality of life and self-care activities. Primary and secondary outcomes will be summarized descriptively, and comparisons will be made using chi-square tests for categorical data and independent sample t-tests for continuous data. The trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT06623006).</p

    Quantifying the Need for Synthetic Inertia in the UK Grid:Empirical Evidence from Frequency Demand and Generation Data

    The increasing integration of inverter-based renewable energy sources is displacing conventional synchronous generation, resulting in a progressive reduction in system inertia and heightened challenges to frequency stability. This study presents a detailed empirical analysis of the UK electricity grid over a representative 24 h period, utilizing high-resolution datasets that capture grid frequency, energy demand, generation mix, and wholesale market prices. An inertia proxy is developed based on the share of synchronous generation, enabling quantitative assessment of its relationship with the Rate of Change of Frequency (RoCoF). Through the application of change point detection and unsupervised clustering algorithms, the analysis identifies critical renewable penetration thresholds beyond which frequency stability significantly deteriorates. These findings underscore the increasing importance of synthetic inertia in maintaining grid resilience under high renewable scenarios. The results offer actionable insights for system operators aiming to enhance frequency control strategies and contribute to the formulation of policy and technical standards regarding synthetic inertia provision in future low-inertia power systems.</p
