    XI World Textile Art Biennial Miami, USA:Liquid Notation

    Liquid Notation was selected for XI World Textile Art Biennial, Miami International Fine Arts – MIFA (Miami International Fine Art), USA, and involves a textile artwork working with the Lilliput technique measuring 125.5 x 61cm and a collaboration with electronic sound artist and composer Professor Monty Adkins. Whilst I have worked with sound before, and Adkins with visual artists for Liquid Notation we are not interested in one artistic discipline simply drawing on the other or inspiration but a fundamental evaluation of methodological practice and how elements can be shared to provide a common grammar of approaching the practice of making. So far, we have shared our conceptual starting points and recognised synergies within our practices, but this artwork is a significant research project we have developed collaboratively. The starting point was a weave notation book that had become water damaged. The dampness on the weave notation informed a new abstract(ed) visual form and offers inspiration for the deliberate harnessing of modest experiences into structured blocks of sound compositions and coloured thread.The selection panel for the XI World Textile Art Biennial included: Biret Tavman, WTA representative from Turvey; Ewa Latkowska-Żychska, Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Władysław Strzemiński in Łódź; Leva Krūmiņa, Professor at the Art Academy of Latvia; Dr. Kinor Jiang, Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Pauline Oritz, Coordinator of Textiles at the School of Arts and Communication of the National University of Costa Rica; Susan Taber Avil, artist and Professor and former Chair of Design at the University of California, Davis. Artists from 37 countries submitted work for the open international call, with over 278 entries. 50 works were selected for the large format salon. I was one of two British artists selected.<br/

    A cross-country analysis of self-determination and continuance use intention of AI tools in business education:Does instructor support matter?

    This study builds on the recent interest in AI adoption research in academic settings by highlighting the need for culturally sensitive AI educational tools. The study achieved this by demonstrating how cultural differences shape students' motivation and AI use. This study adopts a cross-country comparative analytical approach to explore postgraduate students’ motivation to continue using AI tools in the context of higher education. The study developed a theoretical model based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Expectation Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) to explore how perceived competence, perceived relatedness and perceived autonomy influence the continuance use intention of AI tools in two culturally unique higher education contexts – United Kingdom and Nigeria. The study also investigates how instructor support, AI anxiety and Trust in AI moderate the relationship between self-determination and AI continuance use intention of students. The data for this study was collected using Qualtrics online survey to generate responses from postgraduate students in the UK and Nigerian HEIs contexts. The questionnaire was designed using validated existing scales. Overall, 245 and 214 valid responses were received from Nigeria and UK postgraduate students respectively. The data was analysed using Structural Equation Modelling. The findings show that perceived relatedness and perceived autonomy are important predictors of AI tools continuance use intention in both countries. The findings reveal the role of cultural differences in AI use and the relative importance of relatedness and autonomy. The results also demonstrate that instructor support plays a fundamental role in AI use. The perceived impact of AI anxiety and trust in AI on competence, relatedness and autonomy vary between the different contexts. The findings emphasise the need for culturally adaptable AI systems capable of prioritizing either collaborative or individual characteristics based on the cultural setting. The findings provide useful insights for institutions and technology firms who are interested in developing globally acceptable AI tools for educational use

    Tipping Point

    Tipping Points addresses climate change and increasing temperature of our atmosphere through the lens of receding glaciers. The pin in textiles hold layers of fabric together, but in this work, this is inverted, and it is the ice that holds the pins in a mesh like form. Just as glaciers carry rock debris, layers of ice and pins are built up to echo a double cloth that is woven separately and then becomes combined using a different warp and weft structure. The soundscape utilises recordings of wind and storms recorded in Norway as well as recordings of recordings of pins and ice. These are layered and interwoven using the same ideas of ice and double cloth to create an immersive sonic tactility.Tipping Point was selected from a submission of over 300 entries for Textile Art Biennial BIEN 2025 https://layer.si/bien/en/kr/open-call-2025/.     The impact of air pollution on labour productivity:Large-scale micro evidence from Europe

    This study provides causal estimates of the impact of air pollution on short-run productivity based on firm-level data covering over 2.5 million companies operating in Europe from 2000 to 2022. Using the changes in the height of the planetary boundary layer as an instrumental variable, the analysis shows that a 1 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 concentration (a 7% increase at the sample mean) causes a 0.55% reduction in labour productivity that same year. The effect is driven by high air pollution days above at least 25 µg/m3. Firms in the construction sector and in sectors employing a larger share of high-skilled workers, medium-sized firms, and firms with low capital intensity are more affected. The results suggest that public policies to reduce air pollution may contribute positively to economic growth: back-of-the-envelope simulations suggest that around a third of labour productivity growth in Europe over the period 2011-2022 could have been due to improvements in air quality

    Emotional intelligence and its value for higher education educators:A literature review

    Aligned to general intelligence, the construct of emotional intelligence emerged in the 1990s. Its value in a range of contexts has been extensively researched, particularly in business related fields. There is an emerging body of small-scale research within higher education contexts, however, this has been sporadic and geographically diverse. This paper undertakes a critical analysis of current empirical research and presents an overview of key competencies associated with emotional intelligence that appear to have value for higher education educators. The premise for this approach is that further work is needed in higher education research to synthesise existing research through literature reviews and meta-analyses. The findings indicate little congruence from the studies included in the literature review, although positive correlations were found around emotional intelligence and varying conceptions of academic well-being. The wide geographic spread of empirical research potentially raised cultural issues that appear important when considering research in this area

    Suicide and Head and Neck Cancer:A Systematic Review With Meta‐Analysis and Narrative Synthesis

    ObjectivePeople with head and neck cancer are up to three times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. There is an urgency to understand and address the growing rates of suicidality within this population. The objectives of this review are (1) to explore the risk factors for thoughts of suicide and self-harm, and suicide completion in patients with head and neck cancer, and (2) to understand the challenges and needs of patients impacted by head and neck cancer who have had thoughts of self-harm and suicide.MethodsMixed-methods systematic review following the PRISMA protocol. Electronic databases and grey literature searches were completed using MeSH terms and key word searches. A total of 3665 recorded were identified; with 36 studies included. Of these, 22 focussed on suicide completion, with sufficient data to conduct a meta-analysis on several important risk factors for suicide completion. These are sex, age, time since diagnosis and marital status. The remaining 14 studies reported on suicide ideation for this population, with the findings analysed within a narrative synthesis. Findings and clinical implications were refined with input from nine members of a head and neck cancer patient and public involvement group.FindingsRisk of suicide ideation and suicide completion was greatest in male patients. Suicide completion was highest in patients within the first 6-months of diagnosis, who were widowed, or had cancer of the hypopharynx. Suboptimal pain and symptom management appeared related to a higher risk of suicide ideation. A therapeutic and supportive relationship with health and social care professionals was helpful in managing experiences of suicidal ideation.ConclusionsHealth and social care professionals should identify, assess, support and follow-up regarding thoughts of suicide for patients with head and neck cancer. Clear pathways are necessary for the management of suicidality, to include appropriate referrals to psychiatry/psychology, supportive interventions to include medications that can help with pain, distress or other symptoms

    Substantive or symbolic? The international strategies of Czech universities

    There is a voluminous literature on the internationalisation of higher education. However, there is much less written about the international strategies of universities themselves. The countries of Central Europe are a particularly important omission because of their distinctive history and culture and experience of post-socialist transition and subsequent accession to the European Union. We explore Czech universities’ international strategies, in the context of institutional pressures, particularly from the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, using organisational legitimacy theory. Data were collected from 11 public universities in the Czech Republic using the universities’ mission and vision statements, their strategic plans and international strategies, and 40 semi-structured in-depth interviews. We find that public universities in the Czech Republic use symbolic international strategies, as well as substantive ones; sometimes concurrently. The international strategies are driven by concerns about legitimacy as well as competitiveness. The deployment of symbolic international strategies by Czech universities is a pragmatic response to institutional pressures, particularly from the Ministry, which provides most of their funding. Thus, Czech universities behave in a way that bolsters their survival and secures funding for their development, as suggested by the influence strand of the theory of pragmatic organisational legitimacy

    An ultra-light, low-cost reflecting/absorbing dual-mode metasurface

    This paper presents an ultra-light, low-cost reconfigurable metasurface functioning as both reflector and absorber, with mode switching via a lossy electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) layer. In reflection mode, the reflecting EBG (REBG) structure exhibits in-phase reflection characteristics at 2.48 and 5.84 GHz, with its dual-band operation achieved through a square patch configuration. In absorption mode, the integration of a lossy EBG layer atop the REBG enables relatively wideband absorption, while preserving insensitivity to polarization and exhibiting stability against varying incident angles. The absorption band fully encompasses the reflection band by employing an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven antenna optimization technique, specifically, the self-adaptive Bayesian neural network surrogate model-assisted differential evolution for antenna optimization (SB-SADEA) method. With a peak absorption rate reaching 99 %, the developed prototype sustains over 90 % absorption efficiency throughout the 2.2–7.28 GHz band. Additionally, this structure can isolate thermal infrared radiation, achieving both electromagnetic and infrared camouflage capabilities, with an infrared emissivity as low as 0.06. Two co-fabricated textile monopole antennas were experimentally characterized with the REBG to validate reflection behavior. The metasurface boosts realized gain by 5 dB at 2.48 GHz and 5.84 GHz. Consistent agreement between simulations and measurements proves the dual-mode metasurface’s efficacy
