    Not AvailableUnder changing climate scenarios, developing sustainable adaptation strategies in agriculture will be obligatory. To understand the effect of carbohydrate-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) and crop-residue mulch (CRM) on pearl millet productivity and water-use efficiency (WUE), field experiments were undertaken for three consecutive years at 11 different locations (representing ⁓30 % of the global pearl millet growing area). Eight treatments, namely, Control; CRM 5.0 t/ha; SAP 2.5 kg/ha; SAP 5.0 kg/ha; SAP 7.5 kg/ha; SAP 2.5 kg/ha + CRM 5.0 t/ha; SAP 5.0 kg/ha + CRM 5.0 t/ha and SAP 7.5 kg/ha + CRM 5.0 t/ha were evaluated. Co-application of CRM and SAP increased pearl millet grain and stover yield by up to ⁓45 % and ⁓36 %, respectively. Pearl millet responded significantly up to 2.5 kg/ha SAP application (with or without CRM) only. Further, soil microbial biomass carbon improved significantly with CRM (20 %) and SAP (10.9–12.1 %) individually and with simultaneous application of CRM and SAP (⁓30 %). Likewise, dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, and urease activities also improved significantly due to the co-use of CRM and SAP. Positive effects of CRM, SAP, and their co-application were also witnessed on soil microbial (bacterial, fungal, actinobacteria) populations and water-use efficiency (WUE) across environments. Among the locations, New Delhi and Aurangabad were the most desirable and stable ecologies, whereas Bikaner and Vijayapur remained the least consistent. Hence, to tackle the moisture-stress problem under pearl millet production systems and to achieve stable productivity, greater WUE and better soil microbial activity, CRM 5 t/ha in conjunction with SAP 2.5 kg/ha may be recommended across diverse ecologies.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableThe aim of study was to evaluate morphometric traits, growth and reproduction performance of indigenous Agonda Goan pigs reared under coastal climate which supports livelihood development of resource poor farmers. Population size in breeding tract varied depending on farmers’ preference for breeding and consumers’ demand for pork. Data (n=74) on different parameters were recorded both from farmer’s flock and institute pig unit. Body measurements such as body length, height at withers, chest girth and neck girth of both were measured using measuring tape. The body weights at different ages i.e., birth, weaning and monthly interval up to one year of age were recorded using digital weighing balance. The average body length, chest girth, height at withers and neck girth were 102.68±3.22 cm, 99.86±3.64 cm, 58.32±1.19 cm and 73.09±4.18 cm, respectively. The mean bristle yield (g/cutting), bristle length (cm) and bristle diameter (micron) were 38.08±5.85, 4.45±0.04 and 268.21±9.84 in males, and 88.16±16.95, 5.69±0.07 and 270.93±11.07 in female pigs, respectively. The mean weight at birth was 0.59±0.01 kg and at weaning was 3.76±0.12 kg. The yearling weights of adult male and female were 46.58±4.50 and 47.27±6.46 kg, respectively. The average litter size at birth and at weaning was 7.21±0.41 and 5.93±0.28, respectively. Pre-weaning and postweaning growth rates were 79.25±9.86 and 153.85±13.34 g/day, respectively. This unique germplasm has potential for sustainable production with improved pig breeding programs. However, the breed is under constant threat due to indiscriminate crossbreeding with unbalanced admixture and replacement with exotic breeds for which immediate conservation and improvement programs are essential to save the breed.Not Availabl

It has become the third most important crop in India, known as the "queen of cereals" due to its adaptability to various growing conditions. Maize serves as human food, animal feed, and raw material for industries like food processing, poultry, dairy, and ethanol production. However, nutrient deficiencies pose a challenge, caused by imbalances in fertilizers, reduced transpiration, and unfavourable soil conditions. To address this, nutrient deficiencies must be identified early to achieve high yields and quality produce. Maize is an exhaustive crop that requires a balanced input of nutrients, as it depletes primary, secondary, and micronutrients from the soil. Soil fertility and expected outputs influence maize's nutritional needs, and external replenishment through organic and inorganic fertilizers is necessary. Current nutrient management practices often result in unbalanced plant nutrition, with micronutrient deficiencies such as copper, zinc, boron, and sulphur limiting maize yields. The routine use of NPK fertilizers across diverse soil types further exacerbates nutrient imbalances, impacting crop performance. Additionally, nutrient deficits in maize affect radiation use efficiency and leaf area index. Deregulated fertilizer prices have led to nutrient imbalances, decreased nutrient-use efficiency, and reduced farm profitability. Balancing the application of macronutrients (NPK) and ensuring an adequate supply of all 17 essential nutrients are crucial for optimizing crop performance.Not Availabl
