The focus needs tobe shifted from enhancing production to enhancingincome of fishers and the development of sustain-able livelihood.     Not AvailableCrop improvement, integral to global food security and environmental sustainability, has been significantly enhanced by molecular markers. Simple Sequence Repeats, or microsatellites, stand out as crucial markers due to their unique tandem repeat structure across genomes. These markers are pivotal in genetic diversity assessment, QTL mapping, and marker-assisted selection in crop breeding programs. Despite existing SSR extraction tools, challenges persist, including the need for language-specific expertise and limitations in handling complex genome data. To address these issues, we introduce SSRmine, a userfriendly Python-based tool designed for efficient SSR extraction from diverse sequence data. SSRmine employs a novel algorithm to analyze sequences systematically, extracting SSR markers of varying lengths. The presented tool's design ensures ease of use, platform independence, and adaptability, catering to researchers with varying computational expertise. The study results show that SSRmine significantly improves accessibility to SSR extraction, offering a robust solution for researchers involved in genetic variation studies. The tool's efficiency and versatility make it a valuable asset in advancing crop improvement strategies through precision breeding.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableDickeya dadantii, the causal organism of bacterial stalk rot of sorghum, is India’s widely spread and destructive disease. To explore sources of natural bactericides as alternative approaches in an integrated disease management strategy against D. dadantii, methanolic and aqueous extracts of twenty different plants were evaluated. In vitro antibacterial activity assays demonstrated that Eucalyptus globulus and Aegle marmelos produced compounds that exhibited the highest zone of inhibition against D. dadantii, (i.e., 1.67-2.00 cm) at 20% concentration. Pot assays conducted in the greenhouse and the field showed that these extracts could decrease the disease incidence in sorghum seedlings and also seemed to have some plant-growth-promoting factors. Hence, extracts of E. globulus and A. marmelos were further analyzed by GC-MS to identify the bioactive compounds present that could bind KdgR, a repressor protein involved in the pectin degradation pathway of D. dadantii. Ten of the 155 compounds identified showed a high-binging affinity (i.e., -7.5 to -8.6 Kcal/mol) with KdgR, the target pectin degradation repressor protein of D. dadantii. In addition, SEM analysis showed that the plant extracts caused morphological changes in the cell wall of the D. dadantii. Our results suggest that E. globulus and A. marmelos produce compounds that could be used as natural bactericides against D. dadantii and perhaps other plant pathogenic bacteria.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableWomen are predominantly engaged in postharvest fisheries and comprise about 75% of those engaged in fish marketing in India. The roles performed by fisherwomen are often not recognized. With the recent penetration of technology, mechanization, and capital orientation in fishing and fish vending, the business atmosphere has further turned against the interests of women. Women have to face competition in accessing fish, availing a prospective selling space, locating customers at their preferred time, and to adjust with the changing consumer preference to provide fish in a ready-to-cook form. With this background, a study was undertaken among women fish vendors of the south Indian state of Kerala, to analyze their access to inputs and services and to collect gender-disaggregated data. A large level of regional variation was observed in terms of the involvement of women in fish vending owing to established cultural norms. There exists skewed access to inputs and services like fish, credit, ice, infrastructure facilities, transportation, and storage facilities for women in the state. Women with poor social and economic networking were less privileged to have an incremental income from their traditional fish vending. There was a clear indication of the influence of financial capabilities such as employment days, volume, and variety of fish handled in determining the daily income of vendors. The inability to invest in fish vending activities was found to influence daily revenue.
