Not AvailableRanidhan is a popular late-maturing rice variety of Odisha state, India. The farmers of the
state suffer heavy loss in years with flash floods as the variety is sensitive to submergence. Bacterial
blight (BB) disease is a major yield-limiting factor, and the variety is susceptible to the disease. BB
resistance genesXa21, xa13, and xa5, along with the Sub1 QTL, for submergence stress tolerance
were transferred into the variety using marker-assisted backcross breeding approach. Foreground
selection using direct and closely linked markers detected the progenies carrying all four target
genes in the BC1F1, BC2F1, and BC3F1 generations, and the positive progenies carrying these genes
with maximum similarity to the recipient parent, Ranidhan, were backcrossed into each segregating
generation. Foreground selection in the BC1F1 generation progenies detected all target genes in 11
progenies. The progeny carrying all target genes and similar to the recipient parent in terms of
phenotype was backcrossed, and a total of 321 BC2F1 seeds were produced. Ten progenies carried
all target genes/QTL in the BC2F1 generation. Screening of the BC3F1 progenies using markers
detected 12 plants carrying the target genes. A total of 1270 BC3F2 seeds were obtained from the best
BC3F1 progeny. Foreground selection in the BC3F2 progenies detected four plants carrying the target
genes in the homozygous condition. The bioassay of the pyramided lines conferred very high levels
of resistance to the predominant isolates of bacterial blight pathogen. These BB pyramided lines
were submergence-tolerant and similar to Ranidhan in 13 agro-morphologic and grain quality
traits; hence, they are likely to be adopted by farmers.Not Availabl

Not AvailablePlant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have multifarious beneficial activities for plant growth promotion; act as source of metabolites, enzymes, nutrient mobilization, biological control of pests, induction of disease resistance vis-a-vis bioremediation potentials by phytoextraction and detoxification of heavy metals, pollutants and pesticides. Agrochemicals and synthetic pesticides are currently being utilized widely in all major field crops, thereby adversely affecting human and animal health, and posing serious threats to the environments. Beneficial microorganisms like PGPR could potentially substitute and supplement the toxic chemicals and pesticides with promising application in organic farming leading to sustainable agriculture practices and bioremediation of heavy metal contaminated sites. Among field crops limited bio-formulations have been prepared till now by utilization of PGPR strains having plant growth promotion, metabolites, enzymes, nutrient mobilization and biocontrol activities. The present review contributes comprehensive description of PGPR applications in field crops including commercial, oilseeds, leguminous and cereal crops to further extend the utilization of these potent groups of beneficial microorganisms so that even higher level of crop productivity and quality produce of field crops could be achieved. PGPR and bacteria based commercialized bio-formulations available worldwide for its application in the field crops have been compiled in this review which can be a substitute for the harmful synthetic chemicals. Not AvailableFoot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a contagious viral disease of high economic importance, caused by FMD virus (FMDV), a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus, affecting cloven-hoofed animals. Preventive vaccination using inactivated virus is in practice to control the disease in many endemic countries. While the vaccination induces antibodies mainly to structural proteins, the presence of antibodies to the non-structural proteins (NSP) is suggestive of infection, a criterion for differentiation of infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA). Also, there is a growing demand for enhancing the stability of the FMD vaccine virus capsid antigen as the strength of the immune response is proportional to the amount of intact 146S particles in the vaccine. Considering the need for a DIVA compliant stable vaccine, here we report generation and rescue of a thermostable and negative marker virus FMDV serotype O (IND/R2/1975) containing a partial deletion in non-structural protein 3A, generated by reverse genetics approach. Immunization of guinea pigs with the inactivated thermostable-negative marker virus antigen induced 91% protective immune response. Additionally, a companion competitive ELISA (cELISA) targeting the deleted 3A region was developed, which showed 92.3% sensitivity and 97% specificity, at cut-off value of 36% percent inhibition. The novel thermostable-negative marker FMDV serotype O vaccine strain and the companion cELISA could be useful in FMDV serotype O enzootic countries to benefit the FMD control program. Not AvailableThe yield of the crop is a complex function of a number of dependent traits, which
makes yield prediction a statistically difficult task. A number of work on yield prediction using
morphological characters already exists in the literature. Most of the work used statistical techniques
such as linear regression and crop yield models, which assume a linear relationship between yield
and the morphological traits; in actual practice, such a linear relationship is seldom achieved. With
the advancement in the field of machine learning techniques, these methods can provide a viable
alternative for dealing with nonlinear relationships for yield prediction. Globally, apples are the most
consumed fruit. In this paper, attempts have been made to predict the yield of the apple crop using
morphological traits. PCA was used for selection of the significant variables. These variables were
later used as input variables in the ANN model with different hidden layers for predicting crop yield.
The predictive performance of the model was evaluated using standard statistical tests. Sensitivity
analysis was performed to find out the individual effects of each character on the apple yield. The
study contributes to a better understanding of the complex relationships between crop yield and
