    Not AvailableThe integrated farming system is considered more resilient to climate change; hence, more emphasis has been given to the popularization of this eco-friendly farming system in recent times. Location-specific and resource-based integrated farming can be an important avenue for improving livelihood and income, especially for marginal and poor farmers. The beauty of this system is that if one source of income compromises, the farmer will always have a second source for sustainability and survival. Though several studies have been carried out, there is still ambiguity in many aspects like quality and quantity of organic manure to be applied, stocking density of livestock and fish under different integrations, productivity under the different agro-climate zone, water quality conditions, quality of the end products etc. Studies at ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna has demonstrated that integrating livestock production along with the fish can enhance fish production (3.0-4.5 tonnes/ha) significantly. However, haphazard and excessive use of manure can also be detrimental, and unfavourable environmental conditions like persistent cloudy days, very low water temperature, low dissolved oxygen etc. can cause significant economic loss to the farmers. In conclusion, it can be stated that integrated fish farming has the ability to increase overall production and income sustainably. The synergistic role played by different components can have the ability to withstand even climate-related issues and there-by can play a significant role even in decreasing greenhouse emissions.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableThe present study was conducted to compare the plasma levels of melatonin, ghrelin, steroid hormones, amino acids, expression of hormone receptors (MNTR, GHLR), and amino acid transporters (AAts, 4 nos.) during early (EP, 24-28 weeks) and mid (MP, 32-36 weeks) laying period. Hormones melatonin and ghrelin have been associated with ovarian function in chickens. Till date no reports are available with respect to mentioned physiological parameters on the production performance and their modulation by Se (selenium) treatment in Vanaraja Chickens. Vanaraja chickens at 22 weeks of age were divided equally into two groups. Control group was reared on a basal diet containing 0.3mg of inorganic Se. Treatment group was offered additional 0.3mg of organic Se enriched yeast during EP and MP. When compared between the control groups of EP and MP, the mean level of all the hormones was higher at EP. The expression of all the AAts and MNTR was higher in jejunum, compared to magnum, except for CAT and GHLR during EP. When compared to control group supplementation of selenium increased the level of plasma hormones and amino acids significantly (P <0.05) during MP. When compared between EP and MP, treatment with Se increased expression of 2-3 number of aats and decreased MNTR in both the tissues significantly at EP, whereas expression of only GHLR increased in magnum. The Se treatment did not cause significant change in the expression of receptors, at MP. In conclusion, additional Se supplementation increased the utilization of hormones and modulation of the physiological parameters was higher in magnum tissue resulting in a beneficial effect on increased egg production (2%), and body weight (P < 0.01) during EP and MP.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableWe investigated the effect of depuration of three naturally contaminated commercially important tropical edible bivalve molluscs by varying temperature, salinity and body-size of animals harvested from Ashtamudi and Vembanad estuaries, India using a static depuration system to ensure microbiological food safety. Before depuration, the levels of faecal indicators and pathogens were above the acceptable limits for live consumption. The depuration water temperature had a significant effect on bacterial elimination. Log reduction of faecal coliforms (FC) and E. coli varied between room-temperature (RTDS) and low-temperature depuration system (LTDS) and it was in the range of 1.39–2.44 and 1.88–2.82 log MPN, respectively under RTDS and LTDS. The elimination of bacterial pathogens such as Vibrio and Salmonella spp. was rapid in RTDS compared to LTDS. The highest elimination of FC and E. coli (2.39 and 2.92 log) was at 35 psμ depuration and the lowest (0.87 and 1.65 log) at 15 psμ depuration. The reduction of FC and E. coli was higher in the medium-sized animals compared to the small animals. Based on the results it is recommended that depuration using the static system under room-temperature (30 ± 1 °C); a salinity range of (25–35 psμ) and using medium-size bivalves (clam>30 mm; mussel >45 mm, and oyster >65 mm length) as optimum conditions for producing microbiologically safe bivalves for live consumption within 36 h.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableThe study emphasizes on the development and evaluation of a PV-powered solar-infrared hybrid dryer (SIHD) for the uninterrupted drying of anchovy fish irrespective of weather conditions and grid connectivity. The SIHD dryer was designed to utilize solar energy as the main source of heat for drying during sunshine hours and an infrared lamp as backup during overcast conditions. It consists of a cylindrical drying chamber, infrared (IR) lamp, drying trays, solar PV panel, battery, and a remote monitoring system. The performance of SIHD was evaluated using anchovy by assessing drying kinetics, drying efficiency, and sensory attributes of the dried product and comparing it with solar and open sun drying. A remote data acquisition unit with a controller and sensors was integrated with the SIHD to obtain drying data and maintain desired drying conditions. The moisture of anchovy is reduced from 83.7 (w.b.) to 15.2% (w.b.) in 6.25 h by SHID, while it takes 10.30 h in a solar dryer and 16.20 h in the open sun drying to achieve the moisture content of 15.3% (w.b.) and 15.5% (w.b.), respectively. The maximum drying efficiency of 30.43% and 41.11% was obtained for solar and solar-infrared hybrid drying, respectively. The dried samples obtained from the solar infrared hybrid dryer received the highest overall acceptability score with superior color and texture. Hence, the outcome of the present study helps to understand the new and innovative approach of using solar-IR hybrid technology in the drying process for controlled and efficient drying with scope for large-scale adoption possibilities.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableThe biochemical composition and nutrient profile of flower tail shrimp (Metapenaeus dobsoni), brown shrimp (Metapenaeus monoceros), jinga shrimp (Metapenaeus affinis) and kiddi shrimp (Parapenaeopsis stylifera) were evaluated. Significantly higher (p<0.05) content of crude protein in M. affinis (17.84 %) and crude fat in M. monoceros (1.78 %) and ash in P. stylifera (1.84 %) were observed. Glutamic acid (19.45 to 20.45 %) was the predominant amino acid. Ratio of essential to non-essential amino acids (EAA/ NEAA) was 0.74 to 0.89 with highest in case of M. dobsoni. Palmitic acid was the abundant fatty acid in all the four species (15.04 to 21.99 %). The content of eicosapentaenoic acid (13.37 to 14.85 %) and docosahexaenoic acid (8.65 to 16.99 %) were significantly higher. The ratio of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids ranged from 0.52 to 1.05. The ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids (PUFA/ SFA) was highest in P. stylifera (1.14), while in the Metapenaeus spp. it ranged from 0.54 to 0.82. Atherogenicity index (AI) and thrombogenicity index (TI) were lower, AI values range from 0.53 to 0.68 in Metapenaeus spp. and 0.39 in case of P. stylifera. TI values of Metapenaeus spp. ranged from 0.46 to 0.53 and in case of P. stylifera TI value was 0.25. The mineral profile showed rich content of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium.Not Availabl
