    Not AvailableTo sustain food-production targets while reducing residue burning in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) is desirable, amongst other potential adaptations. To identify the optimum residue levels for sustainable CA, the Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) model was used to analyse 37 years (1984–2022) of diverse CA scenarios on productivity, sustainability and carbon footprints in the rice-wheat cropping system (RWCS). The study highlighted that APSIM has the capacity to capture the crop performance, phenology and CA scenario in RWCS. The scenario analysis indicated that maximum system productivity (SP) was recorded under higher residue (HR-9.33 t ha−1) followed by higher-medium residue (HMR-8.97 t ha−1) scenarios of CA, as compared to conventional tillage (CT-8.75 t ha−1). Stable productivity was achieved under CA. Sustainable yield index and sustainable value index were significantly higher under HR (0.83 and 0.79, respectively) followed by HMR. The soil organic carbon concentration is predicted to increase ∼30–95% in CA with a carbon sequestration rate of 0.1–0.37 t ha−1 yr−1. The system water productivity was highest under HR (3.68 kg ha−1 mm−1) which was ∼10% higher than CT. Overall, the study revealed that the APSIM model is efficient in capturing CA effects in South Asian RWCS and that the adoption of CA results in greater and stable yields, higher water productivity, and more carbon capture over the long term, while reducing production costs.Not Availabl

    Research articleHigh price of chemical potassium (K) fertilizers together with low K use efficiency in weathered tropical soils necessitates the exploration of alternative K fertilizer sources. Effectiveness of low-grade silicate mineral powders (SMP) as a natural K fertilizer in a highly weathered tropical soil was evaluated in this study via laboratory and pot experiments by growing oat (Avena sativa L) and palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini var. motia). Five SMP materials (two mica, one feldspar and two greensand) were obtained from quarry mining sites across India. The total K content in the SMP followed the order: feldspar (12.3%) > waste mica (5.98–8.03%) > greensand (3.77–4.46%). The amount of K released from SMP by chemical extractants was in the following order: water < 0.01 M citric acid < 1 M ammonium acetate < 1 M nitric acid, which indicated that SMP was a slow-release K source. Of the five SMP materials, one waste mica, the feldspar and one greensand were included in the plant growth experiments based on their high K contents. Water and 0.01 M citric acid extractable K from SMP showed the best correlation with K uptake by plants. Compared to feldspar (19.7–22.5%) and greensand (5.4–7.5%), the K recovery from waste mica (39.3–42.5%) was notably higher in both palmarosa and oat. Soil K pool was significantly recharged with waste mica application as evident from higher exchangeable and non–exchangeable K in soil than chemical fertilizer treatment. Application of SMP, particularly waste mica and feldspar, also increased the soil pH and cation exchange capacity by releasing basic cations and improving their retention in the tropical soil. By using low-grade SMP in agriculture, it is thus possible to achieve green recycling of mining wastes as K fertilizer while improving crop production and amending poor quality soils.Not Availabl

    Not AvailableCashew is a cross-pollinated crop requiring insects primarily bees for successful pollination. Honey bees and several native bees are important pollinators of cashew. Among the native bees, Braunsapis spp. and Ceratina spp. are commonly present in the study region. Under Ceratina, three species namely, C. hieroglyphica, C. bingami and Ceratina sp. 1 have been recorded on cashew and their nesting behaviours have been documented under the present investigation. The nests of these three bee species have been found in dried twigs/ sticks of cashew trees. Nests of all three species had smooth circular entrances, but the diameter of the entrance hole varied with species. It was just 1.0-1.5 mm for Ceratina sp. 1, 2.5-4.0 mm for C. hieroglyphica, 3.5-4.0 mm for C. binghami. The nest, as well as cell dimensions, varied with species. In all three species, older cells were at the bottom of nests, while young ones were towards the entrance. Each egg was laid on the pollen provided in an individual cell and sealed with powdered wood particles. Guarding at nest entrance by adult female blocking with its abdomen was commonly noticed in the nests. The number of individuals in a single nest varied between 1-14, 1-7 and 1-19 for C. hieroglyphica, C. bingami and Ceratina sp. 1, respectively. The trees with the pruned cut ends had more number of bee nests compared to unpruned ones. The study suggests that increasing smooth cut ends in the sticks by pruning and leaving the dried sticks in the cashew plants wherever possible can facilitate the native bees to make nests in them thereby they can be conserved.Not Availabl
