    We propose the presence detection method using the Bluetooth, and evaluate it. The existing products and technologies to detect a presence have some problems. For example, these are security threat caused by human error, expensive introduction cost, and detection accuracy. Firstly, we analyzed a characteristic of Bluetooth's RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) from preliminary experimental results to solve these problems. As a result, we proposed the method that combines processing using RSSI's threshold and exception handling for instantaneous variation of RSSI. Then we decided optimum value of parameters for the method by various performance evaluation tests, and finally, we verified usability of the proposed method.International Workshop on Informatics, IWIN200

    Estimation of User Action and Mobile Phone Situation By Using Active Sensing

    We propose an active sensing method that uses a mobile phone’s acceleration sensor and its vibration motor as an actuator to estimate the phone’s situation and its user’s action. This method overcomes the problem of existing methods: despite obtaining accurate action estimation from a single acceleration sensor, they cannot estimate the phone’s situation because they utilize differences in acceleration sensor data caused by user actions and estimate the user’s action based on that change. Our method vibrates the mobile phone by using its vibration motor under pulse width modulation (PWM) control and extracts the feature quantities from the acceleration sensor data. It then simultaneously estimates the user’s action (dynamic items) and phone’s situation (static items) with high accuracy from the differences in feature quantities
