Background: Recent research in genetics has led to the discovery of mutations that can cause disease. Once the mutation is discovered, DNA-tests can be developed and identify affected individuals. This study provides information about the mutations that are responsible for the development of the progressive eye disease called PRA. Method: A systematic literature search was conducted in three different databases. Four scientific articles were included, that deal with various identified mutations that cause PRA in Golden retriever. Results: GR_PRA1, GR_PRA2 and PRA-prcd are the forms of PRA that have been identified in Golden retrievers. The different forms are due to different mutations, in different genes in the dog`s genome. GR_PRA1 accounts for the biggest share of the cases in the breed, while GR_PRA2 is assumed to be the cause in fewer cases. PRA-prcd is rarely identified within the breed. However, the incidence may vary in different populations. Conclusion: Several of the mutations that cause PRA in Golden retrievers have been discovered, and DNA-tests are available for various types. Precise information about mutations and DNA-tests should be made more available to owners and breeders. Animal health professionals carry this responsibility together with breed clubs and others who offer DNA-tests.B-DY

Electrification of society plays a key role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the UNs climate goal of net-zero emission by 2050. As a result, several countries have challenges with capacity in their electrical power grid. In Norway, these challenges have led to longer application queues and resulted in the introduction of a connection with conditions (TPV)- agreement in 2019. This agreement allows grid owners to utilize the available capacity in the power grid by connecting customers to the grid under conditions that they can be disconnected without compensation if there is a risk of overloading a component on a transmission corridor (RME, 2023). Due to the risk of disconnection, this master’s thesis investigates how TPV works as a facilitator for colocalization of consumption and production. This was done through interviews and simulation of a case with a data centre and a solar power plant. Interviews with employees in grid companies and customers with experience related to connection on terms were necessary to provide an understanding of how TPV is practically used. PVsyst was further used to simulate a case for colocalization of a data centre with a constant load of 100 MW together with a solar power plant with a maximum produced effect of 150 MW. The interviews indicate that the biggest incentives for colocalization from a TPV-agreement are related to the ability to maintain operations during a disconnection. The reason for disconnection must be specified in the agreement for the grid owner to disconnect the customer without compensation, and the customer is not entitled to prior notice before disconnection. This has led to grid company employees to view colocalization of consumption and production positively, as it enables customers to be less dependent on the power grid. Several interviewed customers also referred to alternative power supply to maintain operations. The risk of disconnection due to the TPV-agreement presents both economic and energy efficient benefit for colocalization of production and consumption. The consumer will have access to a power source independent of the grid, and the producer will have a load that can utilize the generated electricity. This can help the producer avoid financial losses due to fees from unfulfilled electricity sales in the day-ahead market and loss of income due to production stop caused by disconnection. The system will also place less strain on the power grid compared to if the facilities were located separately, which may help prevent disconnections. Simulations from colocalization of a solar power plant and a data centre show that the reason for disconnection specified in the agreement should be considered. In this case, the solar power plant can supply the entire consumption of the data centre for up to six hours per day during the summer months. This reduces the systems dependence on power from the grid and lowers the load on the grid components. If the specified reason for disconnection in the TPV- agreement is caused by thermal overheating of a power line, colocalization can reduce the risk of disconnection. In December, simulations show that the solar power plant can supply a maximum of 27 % of the data centres consumption. This means that the data centre will be dependent on the grid power throughout the month. An agreement due to risk of transformer overload may have a higher risk of disconnection than thermal overheating of a power line for this system. It is therefore important to assess the disconnection reason in each TPV- agreement to determine whether it facilitates colocalization of consumption and production

Although development intervention programs can have far-reaching impacts beyond their stated objective, there have been few careful studies of unintended outcomes of such programs. This study assesses the role of Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Program (PSNP) on household size and dependency ratio using the Difference-in-Difference (DiD) method based on panel data from four rounds over 12 years collected in Tigrai, northern Ethiopia. Results show that member households in the public works component of the PSNP have maintained a larger household size than their counterparts outside the PSNP. Member households also had a larger dependency ratio than their counterparts outside the PSNP five years after the program started (2005-2010). With the graduation of members and the downscaling of the program in the period 2010-2015, the effects on household size and dependency ratio were reduced and vanished

The relationship between bird species richness and landscape metrics on selected golf courses around Oslo, Norway

Golf courses have long been at the center of environmental debates. While some view them as ecological sanctuaries for local wildlife, others argue that they pose a threat to the environment due to the use of pesticides and high water consumption levels. Golf courses are composed of various landscape features, including a range of grass types (e.g., green or fairway), water bodies, shrubs, and trees, which all impact local biodiversity in some capacity. This study investigated which spatial features were associated with higher levels of biodiversity, using birds as an indicator species. Birds were chosen as they are a good estimator of biodiversity due to their adaptability and sensitivity to environmental and ecological changes. Bird data was collected using the point count method, and the variables for comparison were found using the datasets FKB-AR5 and FKB-Grønnstruktur. The geospatial analysis was conducted in QGIS, where possibly relevant parameters such as distance to the nearest water source and percentage of tree cover were measured. These landscape metrics were then compared to different indicators of bird diversity, such as the Shannon Diversity Index and the count of unique bird species, using linear regression analysis. The results suggested that golf courses with a higher level of complexity and more irregular shapes, as well as a higher perimeter-to-area ratio tended to better support the diversity of birds. Additionally, closeness to water features, as well as higher percentages of water coverage, were also positively linked with bird species richness and diversity. These findings may help in the design process of future golf courses in order to better support biodiversity, highlighting the potential of golf courses to serve as ecologically beneficial habitats for different species when environmental impact is considered

    No full text
Begrunnelsen for allokeringsfaktor mindre enn 1 er at noe avfall alltid må forbrennes (punkt 3 over). Somatic cell count (SCC) is a key indicator of milk quality and udder health in dairy production. While SCC in cow milk is primarily used as a diagnostic tool for mastitis, its interpretation in goat milk is more complex due to physiological factors such as apocrine secretion, parity, lactation stage, and seasonal variations. Despite its widespread use in the dairy industry, SCC thresholds and their implications for goat milk quality remain poorly defined. This thesis provides novel insights into SCC dynamics in Norwegian dairy goats by investigating its effects on milk composition and coagulation properties at individual goat level. By combining data from one full lactation in a single farm and with a multi-farm comparative study, this research enhances our understanding of SCC fluctuations and their implications for goat milk production. In Paper 1, the study examined SCC variations throughout lactation and their associations with milk composition and bacterial contamination. The findings revealed that SCC levels fluctuate significantly across lactation, with marked increases during the grazing period and late lactation. These seasonal peaks were linked to altered milk composition, including increased free fatty acids (FFA), sodium, and chloride, as well as reduced lactose and casein content. Unlike in cows, where SCC is primarily infection-driven, this study highlights that SCC in goats is influenced by physiological and environmental factors, reinforcing the need for species-specific SCC evaluation criteria. In Paper 2, the study explored the impact of SCC and lactation stage on rennet coagulation properties. High-SCC samples (>2,000 x103 cells/mL) exhibited prolonged rennet coagulation time (RCT) and reduced curd firmness, whereas lowSCC samples (2,000 x103 cells/mL) were associated with increased bacterial contamination, reinforcing the link between SCC and bacterial load. However, the correlation between SCC and bacterial count varied across farms, highlighting the influence of management practices, housing conditions, and stress levels. Notably, some farms exhibited a strong SCC-bacteria correlation, while others showed no significant association, emphasizing that SCC alone is not always a reliable indicator of infection in goat milk. These findings underline the need for integrated milk quality assessments, incorporating SCC monitoring, bacterial culture tests, and period-specific management strategies. This thesis advances the current knowledge of SCC in goat milk by identifying key physiological and environmental drivers of SCC fluctuations and their downstream effects on milk quality and coagulation properties. The findings challenge the conventional reliance on bovine-based SCC thresholds for goats and emphasize the need for species-specific standards. By providing a detailed assessment of SCC’s impact on Norwegian goat milk, this research contributes to more informed decision-making for farmers, dairy processors, and policymakers, ultimately supporting improved milk quality and sustainability in goat dairy production.

Electrolyzer Response to Power Fluctuations: Assessing Battery Storage Needs and Shutdown Thresholds for Hydrogen Production

The interest for green energy production is increasing, where hydrogen production through water electrolysis represents one option. The integration of renewable energy with water electrolysis is a key pathway for sustainable hydrogen production, especially in off-grid systems. However, integration with renewable energy sources like solar and wind power could present challenges due to the inherent variability of these renewable energy sources. Utilizing OpenModelica, an open-source simulation environment built on the Modelica modeling language, this study simulates an off-grid hydrogen production system. The system integrates alkaline electrolyzer units exposed to varying solar and wind power profiles. Simulations are conducted across different system scales and power fluctuation intensities to comprehensively assess the electrolyzer's performance under dynamic operating conditions. The study quantifies the operational boundaries of Alkaline electrolyzer systems directly connected to renewable sources, highlighting their vulnerability to emergency shutdowns triggered by rapid power fluctuations. A key contribution is the derivation of an empirical model characterizing the maximum tolerable power drop (dmaxd_{\text{max}}) as a function of the electrolyzer operating capacity ratio (RR), providing a tool for predicting shutdown events. Furthermore, the study evaluates the minimum battery storage requirements to mitigate these shutdowns. The findings indicate that under most conditions, the battery's peak discharge power requirement was between 24\% and 35\% of the hydrogen production system's rated capacity. Consequently, a 100 MW hydrogen production facility would necessitate a battery discharge capacity of 24--35 MW to compensate for the most significant power fluctuations. The required energy capacity varied significantly depending on the renewable source, system scale, and fluctuation intensity. This work provides valuable insights and practical tools for the design and operation of renewable hydrogen systems. It delivers empirically derived operational thresholds and an open-source simulation model, facilitating improved system dimensioning and control strategy development. The findings underscore the importance of managing power variability for reliable alkaline electrolysis operation and highlight the potential for optimized battery storage integration to enhance the feasibility of off-grid green hydrogen production

Establishing precise links between genotypes and traits is essential for enhancing breeding efficiency in agriculture and advancing personalized medicine. However, the presence of multiple variants in linkage disequilibrium confounds the identification of causal variants. By focusing on the relationship between genotypes and molecular phenotypes as intermediaries, we can better prioritize causal variants. This thesis focuses on developing and improving computational methods to enhance the accuracy, reproducibility, and scalability of genotype-to-molecular-phenotype inference, bridging the gap between genetic variation and phenotypic traits across diverse biological contexts, including human, agricultural, and aquaculture genomics. The first study presents cscQTL, a new computational approach designed to improve the sensitivity and specificity of circular RNA quantitative trait loci mapping. By systematically combining outputs from multiple circRNA detection tools and implementing a robust re-quantification strategy, cscQTL outperforms traditional approaches, enabling the discovery of novel circular RNA quantitative trait loci and their potential roles in immune-related diseases. The second study develops nf-RASQUAL, a scalable Nextflow pipeline for molecular quantitative trait loci discovery in small sample size datasets, building on the established RASQUAL approach. This pipeline enables robust mapping of molecular quantitative trait loci for gene expression and chromatin accessibility in Atlantic salmon, identifying a substantial number of loci in this key aquatic species. Through variant annotation, motif disruption, and colocalization analyses, we demonstrate the biological relevance of the discovered molecular quantitative trait loci. The third study leverages deep learning and functional genomics data to predict the regulatory impact of non-coding variants in farmed species, including cattle, pigs, chickens, and salmon. Optimized deep learning models achieve high sequence modeling accuracy and effectively prioritize functional variants through genomic prediction and expression quantitative trait loci causal variant prediction. Motif analysis and in silico mutagenesis further reveal regulatory grammar, enhancing our understanding of sequence-function relationships in non-coding regions.

Offshore wind has gained increasing attention to reduce emissions, expand electricity supply, and support Norway’s green transition. Floating wind technology, which enables deployment in deep waters, holds particular promise but faces high capital costs and considerable uncertainty. This thesis assesses whether floating offshore wind can be considered socially profitable in Norway under current and future market conditions. Using cost–benefit analysis, sensitivity modelling, and qualitative evaluation, our study examines how factors such as electricity prices, carbon pricing, investment costs, and government support affect net social benefit. Our results indicate that profitability is unlikely under baseline assumptions, but achievable under scenarios combining high electricity and CO2 prices, reduced capital costs, and public subsidies. Electricity prices emerge as the most influential determinant of profitability, while cost reductions and a lower discount rate also have a significant effect. Our analysis highlights the importance of incorporating environmental costs and system-level effects into economic assessments. In addition, it emphasizes the strategic value of offshore wind for technology export and employment. Our thesis concludes that social profitability is possible but highly conditional, and future policymaking must account for substantial uncertainty. Given our findings, increases in prices, for example electricity, would need to be substantial and possibly border on the unrealistic for offshore wind to become socially profitable

The disposal of Bauxite Residue (BR) poses significant environmental challenges for the aluminum industry. Improper disposal can affect soil and water quality due to the residue's highly alkaline and saline-sodic properties. Moreover, the challenging environment created by bauxite residue represents a strong limitation for both microbial activity in the matrix and vegetation growth. This thesis presents an extensive study at laboratory and field scale, examining physicochemical and biological effects of various amendments of organic wastes and gypsum on bauxite residue. The objectives of this thesis were to: i) investigate the leachate composition of amended filter-pressed, non-weathered bauxite residue in the humid tropics of Northern Brazil; ii) assess the effects of amendments on the physicochemical properties of bauxite residue undergoing in situ rehabilitation; and iii) compare biological development in response to different amendments applied to bauxite residue in in situ rehabilitation trials. The research is composed by column tests at laboratory scale and subsequently, in situ experiment in northern Brazil.
