    Get PDF
Visitor management is a highly relevant topic as the population grows, and ongoing urbanization leads to both the loss of and high demand for access to nature. Natural areas near cities are becoming essential for safeguarding public health and important ecosystems. Outdoor recreation in Norway, with the right to roam (allemannsretten), is a strong part of Norwegian lifestyle and is practiced at various levels by many people. A high number of visitors can lead to wear and tear on nature, which may affect and disturb the composition of soil and species in the area. A national park is an attraction for many who are seeking nature experiences, and a national park near an urban area can hold significant value for both locals and the tourism industry in the region. This thesis examines two urban-proximate national parks, Østmarka and Tyresta, to compare how their visitor management while maintaining conservation objectives. The Norwegian Østmarka National Park is surrounded by several municipalities, including Oslo, and was established in 2023. The Swedish Tyresta National Park borders several municipalities, including Stockholm, and was established in 1993. Both areas are large, contiguous forest ecosystems near major populations with over one million visitors annually. An interview guide was developed for in-depth interviews with relevant individuals to collect data. These included national park managers, the director of the Naturum, organizations of interest, the Statsforvalteren, and a tourism operator. The purpose was to capture perceptions regarding organization, measures, and restrictions within the protected area. The results show that the location of the national parks clearly influences who visits the areas. This appears to underlie many of the management challenges and highlights the importance of having an active management presence in such areas. The effectiveness of visitor channelling varies, and in some cases, facilities such as designated tent areas do not function as intended due to overcrowding, which pushes others to set up tents illegally. The visitor center plays an important role in engaging with visitors and spreading knowledge and awareness about nature and conservation. It also emerges that collaboration between actors who use the areas is crucial for managing them without major conflicts. Cooperation across national parks can also provide valuable experiences that contribute to solving issues in different ways. Based on the results, the national parks can consider how to proceed with visitor management and draw inspiration from each other regarding which measures have or have not been successful

Life in Meristems: Genetic Pathways Shaping Annual and Perennial Life Strategies

Annual and perennial growth in the grass family (Poaceae) represent distinct life-history strategies governed by genetic and developmental signals in the meristems. Understanding what regulates this divergence is crucial for developing more sustainable and climate-adapted crop varieties. Despite extensive knowledge of meristem genes, it remains unclear which regulators truly influence life-form fate. This thesis investigates four key candidate genes – WUSCHEL (WUS), MANY NODED DWARF1 (MND1), APETALA2/ETHYLENE RESPONSIVE FACTOR (AP2/ERF), and APETALA1/FRUITFULL (AP1/FUL) – to assess their possible roles in determining whether a plant follows an annual or perennial growth trajectory. Using Brachypodium distachyon (annual) and B. sylvaticum (perennial), this study combines phylogenetic analyses, gene expression profiling, CRISPR-induced mutants, and shoot meristem grafting to explore how these genes are regulated and interact. The findings suggest that differences in life history arise from differential regulation of a shared genetic network, rather than gene presence or absence. Grafting experiments indicate that shoot identity primarily dictates life-history strategy, though a potential root contribution remains to be explored. Overall, the study highlights how small regulatory changes can strongly impact developmental strategy, underscoring the potential to engineer perennial traits in grasses through targeted manipulation of existing genetic pathways.Annual and perennial growth in the grass family (Poaceae) represent distinct life-history strategies governed by genetic and developmental signals in the meristems. The brain optimizes synaptic connections via pruning to conserve energy while sustaining functionality an evolutionary trait inspiring the design of artificial Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). Sparse network architectures confer computational advantages in SNNs, reflecting biological efficiency. This thesis evaluates bio-inspired, evolutionary, and statistical methods for connection selection in SNNs. Simulated SNN data will be used to compare these methods across varied parameter conditions, employing factorial experimental designs. Statistical meta-analyses will assess their performance based on metrics such as prediction accuracy, clustering efficacy, and network sparsity. Validation using real-world datasets will further substantiate their efficacy and practical applicability. This research enhances SNN efficiency and effectiveness through optimized variable selection methods inspired by biological pruning mechanisms

Quantile Spillover Dynamics Across Commodities, Currencies, Equities, and Crypto: Revisiting the role of Crude Oil

    Get PDF
This thesis investigates the quantile-based volatility spillover dynamics across a broad set of global financial and commodity markets, with a specific focus on assessing the evolving role of crude oil. Using high-frequency data from 2013 to 2025, the analysis spans six major asset classes: energy, metals, currencies, agriculture, equity indices, and cryptocurrency. A Quantile Vector Autoregression (QVAR) framework is applied to both realized returns and Heterogeneous Autoregressive Realized Volatility (HAR-RV) measures to capture directional and net connectedness across the full conditional return and volatility distributions. We compute the Total Connectedness Index (TCI) across quantiles to evaluate time-varying and state-dependent fluctuations in overall market integration, and we complement this with quantile Granger causality tests to assess whether crude oil leads other asset classes under varying market conditions. The findings reveal that connectedness intensifies during major geopolitical and macroeconomic events, with spillovers peaking in the tails of the distribution. The S\&P 500 and CAC 40 consistently emerge as dominant net transmitters, particularly under extreme market conditions, while assets such as natural gas, platinum, and Bitcoin act as net receivers. Crude oil, once an influential transmitter, has exhibited reduced influence in recent years and do now function as a net receiver of volatility during periods of both bearish and bullish market conditions. These results suggest a structural shift in the global volatility transmission, where traditional energy commodities now play a less central role compared to financial and equity markets

Decoding the Genetics of Intestinal Simple Fold Length in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) Through Deep Learning and Histological Image Analysis

Feed efficiency plays a crucial role in the aquaculture industry, where fish feed is the main cost of production. Optimal utilization of feed and absorption of nutrients has received increased interest as a means increase efficiency of production. Intestinal fold and absorption area in distal intestine have a clear impact on feed utilization, being the site of nutrient absorption. The length of intestinal folds has been associated with nutrient uptake and differences between diets. However, little is known about the genetic background of intestinal fold length. In particular a structure such as the simple fold is a uniform structure in the intestine that is measurable in histological images. As manual measurements of these folds are highly time consuming and have limitations in terms of number of observations, an alternative method using deep learning object detector which can automatically detect large numbers of objects within thousands of images rapidly (namely YOLO) was conducted. In this study, we investigated whether image detection using deep learning could serve as an alternative to manual measurements of intestinal simple folds for genetic selection purposes. In total 225 fish were analyzed using manual measurements in ImageJ, while 173 fish were evaluated through predictions from a YOLOv8-based model. This master’s thesis utilizes data from an experiment in work package 5 in Foods of Norway (FoN), that was carried out in 2017 with a total of 2281 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). In this experiment, 5 fish from each of the 46 tanks with fish were sampled to investigate potential relationships between the intestinal structure and phenotypic traits associated with feed efficiency, such as feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio. The heritability estimates from the bivariate analysis resulted in values of 0.45 and 0.22 for ML (manually measured lengths) and PL (predicted lengths), respectively. Moreover, the heritability of the individual average simple fold lengths increased, yielding more similar results between the two methods, with estimates of 0.66 and 0.68. The genetic correlation between ML and PL was strong and positive, estimated at 0.93 close to unity. The calculated co-heritability suggested a potential 45% improvement in genetic gain. Deep learning shows potential as an alternative method for index selection, offering benefits such as increased data volume and reduced time requirements. Although no genetic associations were found between simple fold length and feed efficiency parameters, these relationships cannot be ruled out, particularly in light of the potential for larger datasets to enable convergence of bivariate analyses

Genetic analysis of yield related traits in Norwegian spring wheat

Previous studies have revealed increased grain number per spike as one contributing factor to recent yield improvement in Norwegian spring wheat. While this trait plays a significant role, the detailed phenotypic characteristics of the spike and the genetic mechanisms underlying them remain insufficiently explored. Gaining deeper insight into these traits is important for guiding ongoing wheat improvement efforts. This study utilized a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from two contrasting Norwegian spring wheat cultivars, Runar and Felgen. The population was evaluated in two field trials conducted in 2024, and additional phenotypic data from 2023 were included where available. To identify genomic regions associated with the measured traits, QTL mapping was conducted based on phenotypic data on 13 developmental, spike, and seed-related traits, including spikelet number, seed size, and thousand grain weight (TGW). Genotypic data were generated using a 25K SNP array, and a genetic linkage map was constructed with 5,804 informative markers. QTL mapping identified multiple genomic regions across the genome, with some regions associated with more than one trait. This overlap among traits suggests that certain loci may influence several aspects of spike and seed development. For example, a region on chromosome 4A emerged as a potential QTL hotspot, with consistent QTL for spikelet number, seed number, and seed size. Another notable region was detected on chromosome 3A, where QTL for spikelet number, seed number, TGW, and seed area co-located, reinforcing its relevance for yield component traits. Both parental lines contributed beneficial alleles: alleles from Felgen were primarily associated with increased spikelet and seed number, while Runar provided favorable alleles for larger grain size and weight. These findings highlight the complex genetic architecture of yield-related traits and point to specific genomic regions that could serve as valuable targets for marker-assisted selection. Further validation through fine mapping and multi-environment trials will be essential to confirm their stability and practical utility in breeding programs

In a continual encounter with new challenges resulting from global warming and increasing precipitation, large municipalities in Norway, such as Bærum and Oslo, have begun implementing blue-green initiatives in urban environments. One example of such a blue-green initiative is stream daylighting projects, which have become increasingly relevant in recent years. However, a stream daylighting project is not only a form of climate adaptation measure but also a way to introduce various beneficial functions for the local population. But are these benefits substantial enough to justify the projects? This is what this thesis aims to investigate. By reviewing literature, it is possible to define several different types of benefits from completed stream daylighting projects, and for some of these benefits, willingness-to-pay estimates have been calculated. By applying these estimates within a Norwegian context, the thesis assesses the costs of stream daylighting projects against the estimated willingness to pay of the local population through a cost-benefit analysis of a total of three case areas in Bærum and Oslo. Furthermore, a Blue-Green Factor (BGF) analysis is also conducted for the case areas before and after the stream daylighting to examine to what extent the project has influenced the blue-green factor in the surrounding area. The results show that, in certain cases, stream daylighting projects in urban areas can be justified in the long term, even under what are likely conservative assumptions regarding the value of the benefits, given the premises set out in the thesis. However, it is also clear that the total cost of the project and the population density within the buffer area significantly impact the profitability of the approach used in the thesis. The BGF changes more significantly in more urban city environments than in less urban areas as a result of the stream daylighting’s introduction. This thesis has primarily been developed to serve as assistance or decision support in municipal stream daylighting planning

    Get PDF
Wildfire is a natural process that has shaped boreal forests for a long time. In Norway, wildfire has primarily been associated with drought-prone Scots pine forests, which typically have burned at low to moderate severity and with higher frequency than spruce forests. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is adapted to fire, with thick bark and high crowns, which often allows older pine trees to survive fires. Wildfire has positive effects on the recruitment of pine and boreal deciduous trees, species diversity, and forest resilience in the face of climate change, uncontrollable wildfires, and retrogressive succession. Few studies have investigated the effects of wildfire on vegetation succession in boreal production forests over time, especially in Norway. The aim of this study is therefore to examine how the understory vegetation of vascular plants, mosses, lichens, and fungi in boreal Scots pine forests in southeastern Norway develops with time since fire, in terms of (1) cover, (2) species richness, (3) species composition, and (4) individual species. The study area consists of six study sites with a total of 15 burned plots, which burned between one and 19 years ago, and five unburned control plots, where vegetation surveys were conducted based on the Carolina Vegetation Survey. The results showed that total cover, and to some extent total species richness, increased with time since fire. However, different functional species groups and individual species responded differently. For heather and mosses, both cover and richness gradually increased over time since fire, whereas cover and richness of lichens increased for about 15 years and then declined. For graminoids and trees, no clear pattern was found. Consequently, species composition also changed with time since fire. Several pioneer species were associated with short time since fire, while species typical of later successional stages were associated with longer time since fire. Across the gradient of time since fire, moisture also emerged as a key gradient influencing species composition, consistent with previous ecological knowledge of boreal forest ecosystems. Other factors explaining changes in vegetation succession were microtopography, desiccation risk, soil texture, and productivity. In conclusion, wildfire appears to be a key driver of boreal ground vegetation by restarting natural forest succession and increasing variation in the forest. Since most wildfires today are extinguished, prescribed burning may serve as a way to achieve the positive effects of fire without posing risks to humans

    Get PDF
Kablene medfører derimot høyere strømpriser for forbrukerne. This master's thesis examines how the Norwegian power system in 2040 might look with and without interconnectors to the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. The topic is particularly relevant in the context of the current energy policy debate regarding energy security, high electricity prices, and Norway's position in the European electricity market. The aim of this thesis has been to analyse the impact of the presence or absence of interconnectors on installed capacity, production, electricity prices, market values, producer revenues, net export, and congestion income. Additionally, the aim was to assess whether consumers or producers benefit more from the interconnections, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of being connected to the European market. To answer this, we used the Balmorel model and ran several scenarios with various assumptions regarding weather years, the extent of onshore wind power, demand, and CO₂ prices. The results indicates that the system works both with and without interconnectors, but with noticeable differences. With interconnectors, electricity production is lower, while electricity prices are higher. Without interconnectors, a higher domestic capacity is necessary to secure supply, and NO2 experiences higher price peaks and lows. Without interconnectors, we observe a cannibalization effect, where a high share of VRE in the system drives prices down to near zero for several hours throughout the year. The future power system will consist of an increased share of solar power and offshore wind, with a greater share of solar power when interconnectors are present and a greater share of offshore wind without them. Consumers benefit most from the absence of interconnectors due to lower prices, and producers also earn more in these scenarios. However, we expect that the total profitability for the producers will generally be higher with interconnectors, as the increased installed capacity without interconnectors results in higher investment costs. Congestion income is naturally lower without interconnectors because of lower price differences within Norway, compared to the other countries connected to NO2. Net export is lower in scenarios with interconnectors, as there is often net import from the countries NO2 is connected to in Europe via the interconnectors. When interconnectors are unavailable, the internal flow between NO2 and the other spot price areas increases further. The main conclusion is that interconnectors provide greater flexibility and increased security of supply without the need for new investments in capacity. However, they lead to higher electricity prices for consumers. An isolated system may function technically, but it could be more vulnerable to power shortage
