Health risks related to consumption of unpasteurized milk
This thesis addresses the acquisition of rights to use an existing private road through land consolidation proceedings – commonly referred to in Norwegian practice as “innpåkjøp” (literally “buying into”). Under current Norwegian law, such rights may be acquired either through land consolidation pursuant to Section 3-9 of the Land Consolidation Act (jordskifteloven), or through expropriation of road usage rights pursuant to Section 53 of the Roads Act (vegloven).
Land consolidation and expropriation represent two distinct procedural frameworks with differing rules on legal costs. In land consolidation cases, each party bears their own legal expenses, whereas in expropriation cases, the expropriating party is usually responsible for the other party’s legal costs. With the adoption of the 1979 Land Consolidation Act and the Supreme Court’s clarification in 1987, the land consolidation courts were granted authority to carry out innpåkjøp as part of a land consolidation case. This dual-track system has since raised fundamental legal questions, particularly concerning legal expenses, and has challenged the conceptual relationship between land consolidation and expropriation.
This thesis examines how the jurisdiction and practice of the land consolidation courts in cases involving innpåkjøp have developed from 1980 to 2025. A key element of the analysis is the Supreme Court’s 2025 decision in case HR-2025-220-A, which confirmed that the practice of innpåkjøp was continued under the 2013 Land Consolidation Act. The thesis also looks ahead to how such cases should now be handled. The research question is:
How have the jurisdiction and practice of the land consolidation courts regarding innpåkjøp in existing private roads developed under the Land Consolidation Act from 1980 to 2025, and how should such cases be handled in the future?
The thesis employs a combination of legal doctrinal and qualitative methodology. It includes an analysis of relevant provisions in the 1979 and 2013 Land Consolidation Acts, along with a selection of judicial decisions concerning innpåkjøp handled through land consolidation. The 2025 Supreme Court ruling is analyzed in depth. Drawing on this ruling and related case law, qualitative interviews were conducted with judges from the land consolidation courts.
Findings show that the authority to facilitate innpåkjøp has evolved but has largely been exercised consistently throughout the period. Nonetheless, the introduction of the new Land Consolidation Act in 2016 gave rise to some legal uncertainty. Views on legal costs are somewhat divided, but there is a tendency toward applying the cost rules of the Land Consolidation Act. When land consolidation and expropriation are both viable options for innpåkjøp, proper guidance is essential to ensure that the most appropriate procedure is selected based on the circumstances of the case and the needs of the parties
Missing Parcels and Farm Size Measurement Error: Do Nationally Representative Surveys Provide Reliable Estimates?
We assess the reliability of measured farm sizes (ownership holdings) in the Living Standard Measurement Study – Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) in Ethiopia and Malawi based on three survey rounds (2012, 2014, 2016) in Ethiopia and four rounds (2010, 2013, 2016, 2019) in Malawi. Using the balanced panel of households that participated in all the rounds, we utilized the within-household variation in reported and measured ownership holdings that were mostly measured with GPSs and/or rope and compass. While this gives reliable measures of reported holdings, we detect substantial under-reporting of parcels over time within households that largely have been overlooked in previous studies. The problem causes an unrecognized bias in agricultural statistics. We find that the estimated farm sizes within survey rounds are substantially downward biased due to systematic and stochastic under-reporting of parcels. Such biases are substantial in the data from both countries, in all survey rounds, and in all regions of each country. We estimate models with alternative estimators for the ownership holding share of maximum within-household holding to examine factors associated with variation in reported farm sizes. Based on the analyses, we propose that the maximum within-household reported farm sizes over several survey rounds provide a more reliable proxy for the real farm size, as these maximum sizes are less likely to be biased due to parcel attrition. The ignorance of this non-classical measurement error is associated with a downward bias of 12-41% in average and median farm sizes and an upward bias in the Gini coefficients for farm size distributions. We propose ideas for follow-up research and improvements in collecting these data types and draw relevant policy implications
Bringing community back into CSA farming? Lessons learned from Norwegian member-driven CSA farms
Although community supported agriculture (CSA) is generally considered a potent alternative to the globalized food system, the capacity of CSA farms to foster community support in agriculture has been questioned due to low engagement of members at the farm and high member turnover rates. In this study, I consider the case of member-driven CSA farms and explore the potential of this CSA model to increase member engagement in CSA farming. Using an inductive, phenomenon-first approach to research, I compare the cases of four Norwegian member-driven CSA farms to describe how they engage members at the farm and explore the factors influencing member engagement. The on-farm participant observation, focus group interviews with farm coordinators and members survey revealed that Norwegian member-driven CSAs significantly engage members in all aspects of the farm operations. Yet, the differences observed between cases showed that member engagement depend on the capacity of the farm to create the right conditions for collaboration. Although the member-driven model has the potential to increase member engagement in CSA farming, the preferences of members, the opinions and engagement of coordinators, the size of the farm, the number of years of operation and the external support received by the farm, are five factors that affect the capacity of the CSA farm to collaborate with members. Ultimately, this study concludes that achieving community engagement in member-driven CSAs depends less on their organizational model and more on the specific conditions that facilitate collaboration and member engagement
Leachate from older landfills constitutes a persistent, and often poorly, documented source of pollution to Norwegian rivers, streams and fjords. Many older landfills were established before current environmental regulations were introduced, and there is limited monitoring of the pollutants being released. A particular challenge concerns landfills where stream enclosures; culverts, were used to divert water through the landfill material. These culverts are often old and susceptible to corrosion, subsidence, and material fatigue, and may therefore act as pathways to spread contaminated leachate. One example is the Kjørbekk landfills in Skien, where both direct discharges into the river, Skienselva, via a buried stream culvert and leakage into the groundwater can occur. Climate change and increased precipitation exacerbate the problems, and measures are needed to reduce the risk of discharges.
In this master's thesis, the use of multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is explored as a decision-support tool in municipal processes for selecting measures for water management in older urban landfills, particularly where stream enclosures are involved. The Kjørbekk landfills in Skien municipality, specifically Kjørbekk II, is used as a case study. A feasibility study conducted by Rambøll for technical solutions concerning the buried culvert that leads the steam Kjørbekken through the landfills, has been completed. Based on this study, three concepts are considered in this analysis: stream restoration, CIPP (Cured-in-Place Pipe) rehabilitation, and shallow piping. The alternatives are compared using four main criteria: environmental impact, technical feasibility, economics, and social factors. Each main criterion is further divided into several sub-criteria, allowing for the capture of various nuances and consequences of the measures. The development of the multi-criteria analysis model was carried out in collaboration with an expert group representing municipal priorities and professional insight.
The analysis concluded that stream restoration is the recommended concept for Kjørbekk II, mainly because it scored highest on three out of four evaluation criteria, including economics, which was given the highest weight. The evaluations show how certain subjective interpretations can influence the results, despite attempts to reduce uncertainty through structured categorization and a validation process. The sensitivity analysis shows that stream restoration is the preferred option in nearly all scenarios, increasing confidence in the conclusion.
The model developed for the analysis has several strengths, including offering a comprehensive and transparent decision-making basis and involving a multidisciplinary expert group. However, the model also has some weaknesses, such as limited user involvement, simplifications that may reduce accuracy, and the fact that it was only tested on one case. Nevertheless, the methodology is considered useful, and if the cases are sufficiently similar, it may be appropriate to transfer the model to other cases. The analysis showed that the methodology is especially useful in cases like this due to the complexity and the need for innovative solutions
The European Union intend to reduce its total energy consumption, resulting in new requirements to reduce the energy consumption of the existing building stock (European Parliament & Council of the European Union, 2024). This could have consequences for older Norwegian buildings of high architectural heritage value if the decision in the EU becomes part of Norwegian law.
Sogn Garden City is a residential area in Oslo consisting of many well-preserved examples of 1920s neoclassical and functionalist architecture (Berg Nordberg og Sogn Vel & Plan- og Bygningsetaten, 2001), which the city of Oslo underline the importance of further preserving (Plan- og Bygningsetaten, 1998). If it becomes a requirement that these houses is to be made more energy efficient, there may be consequences for the architectural character in the until now well-preserved architecture. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to explore which consequences such a requirement from the EU can have for the 1930s architecture of Sogn Garden City.
The thesis is based on several activities. Firstly 59 households among the 1930s architecture are to be interviewed to survey which typical energy efficiency measures already are done on the houses. These typical measures become the foundation on which an energy simulation with the energy simulation software Simien 6. This simulation is based on a case-house with the purpose of representing the typical existing state among the houses of Sogn Garden City. The typical problem that emerges from the simulation further becomes the basis of a feasibility study. In this study different energy efficiency measures are explored to discover what must be done to achieve a nearly-zero energy building level. These measures are then given a rank based on possible consequences for the architectural heritage value of the case-house.
The case-house will be simulated with different energy efficiency measures that the feasibility study provides. This results in an overview diagram where the energy savings of the various measures are compared to the number of architectural characteristics disturbed by these measures, and the building surface area that is disturbed. A selection of these energy efficiency measures is to be designed in Archicad 28, a building information modeling software, to go more in depth and identify what challenges occur in the designing process of these energy efficiency measures considering the wish for preservation.
The results of this thesis study shows that there are already done several energy efficiency measures among the Sogn Garden City building stock, even though it is well preserved. The most typical measures are replacements of windows and doors, retrofitting insulation in the outer walls, and the installation of updated heating systems. The study shows that it is possible to reduce the energy consumption of the building stock of Sogn Garden City by 21% without it disturbing the architectural heritage value when using the most careful and simple energy efficient measures. However, there are uncertainties related to the case-house’s transferability. It is also shown that if it is required that the 1930s architecture in Sogn Garden City is to be renovated to nearly zero energy standards, then extensive interventions on the building shell must be carried out. Various principles within the preservation theory show that this can cause great repercussions for the architectural heritage value of Sogn Garden City, even though it is possible to carry out energy efficient measures in such a way that some heritage value still is preserved
Predictive Modeling of Water Quality in Recirculating Aquaculture Systems: A Comparative Study of ARX, GRU and LSTM Approaches
Accurate forecasting of water-quality parameters is vital for proactive and effective
management of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), where maintaining stable
conditions is essential for fish health and productivity. This study evaluates and
compares the predictive performance of three modeling approaches, a linear autore-
gressive model with exogenous inputs (ARX), a Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and a
Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network in forecasting key water quality (WQ)
parameters: oxidation–reduction potential (ORP), pH, electrical conductivity (EC)
and dissolved oxygen (DO). Data were collected over six weeks in a small-scale RAS,
utilizing a structured Box–Behnken experimental design to systematically vary op-
erational conditions. Models were trained using four-hour historical sensor readings
combined with controlled operational interventions to produce two-hour-ahead fore-
casts. Evaluation using an independent validation dataset indicated distinct strengths
among the models. The linear ARX model demonstrated robust performance, espe-
cially in predicting stable, linear dynamics such as pH with a root mean square error
(RMSE) of 0.009 and EC with a RMSE of 26.88. Conversely, the GRU showed supe-
rior capabilities in capturing transient, event-driven ORP fluctuations with a RMSE
of 4.44. The LSTM, while under performing in most cases, provided marginally better
accuracy in forecasting the noisy and dynamic DO parameter with the best RMSE
of 0.54. These findings underscore the complementary benefits of combining lin-
ear and nonlinear forecasting methods, suggesting hybrid models that leverage both
approaches may offer the greatest accuracy and reliability in practical RAS man-
agement. By enabling more reliable and timely water-quality forecasts, this work
paves the way for smarter, more sustainable aquaculture practices that can help
meet growing global food demands while reducing environmental impact
Since the lifting of Norway’s import ban on strawberry plants in 2015, Norwegian strawberry producers have become increasingly dependent on imported plant material. At the same time, production methods have shifted from traditional open-field cultivation to more controlled systems such as tunnels and tabletop systems. As a consequence, the use of everbearing strawberry varieties, which are currently sourced exclusively through imports, has increased. This change has introduced new challenges related to supply security and plant health, including a higher risk of plant diseases and pests, as well as concerns about resistance development due to plant protection practices in the countries of origin.
This master’s thesis maps the opportunities and challenges for establishing Norwegian propagation of everbearing strawberry plants. The study assesses the agronomic, technological, and economic prerequisites for such production. The research is based on qualitative methods in the form of semi-structured interviews with key actors in the value chain, combined with a quantitative economic analysis. The economic analysis includes the preparation of operating budgets and investment analyses using the net present value method to calculate profitability and compare costs with imported plants.
The findings show that the agronomic and technological prerequisites are present. However, the business economic analysis indicates that Norwegian plant production can be competitive, but profitability requires achieving a market premium as a result of documented higher plant quality.
The study concludes that Norwegian propagation of strawberry plants is realistic, but it requires modern technology in production and close cooperation with stakeholders in the value chain. Overall, these prerequisites will be decisive for profitable propagation of everbearing strawberry plants in Norway
This study examines the occurrence of natural regeneration of oak (Quercus sp) and recruitment trees in selected areas within Asker and Lier municipalities, including Dikemark, Vardåsen, Kjekkstadmarka, and Oppsjømyrene. The objective is to map the recruitment potential of oak and assess how factors such as height, diameter, canopy openings, and species composition influence the growth condition of oak.
The purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of the ecological requirements of oak and provide insights that can support sustainable forest management and the conservation of oak as an important species in Norwegian forests. At the same time, the study identifies and analyzes oak recruitment trees, as well as examines the potential for future conservation or sustainable development. Additionally, I will analyze the regeneration occurring in the areas with recruitment trees. The results from this fieldwork of the forest’s condition and any necessary measures for the preservation and management of oak.
This research project focuses on oak recruitment trees within a defined area, aiming to identify potential conservation areas and assess future sustainable development. Through an extensive fieldwork system, I have established a grid network with fixed placement. The area has been thoroughly examined, and all trees, especially oak trees, have been carefully recorded. Two types of field registrations were conducted for trees with a diameter at breast height between 4-10 cm and > 10 cm, while species composition in the forest was also recorded.
Methodologically, I measured diameter at breast height (DBH), height, angle, and positioning of recruitment trees using LIDAR. For smaller trees, I recorded diameter, height, and number of trees per species based on cardinal directions. Additionally, LIDAR images for Asker municipality were used to analyze the distribution of oak trees over a larger area, in combination with data collection through field measurements. The field measurements included the registration of DBH, height, tree species, and the number of trees on systematically distributed sample plots of 250 m2. LIDAR data were used to map height profiles, canopy openings, and species composition in the canopy layer. By combining these methods, the study has revealed how environmental factors and competition conditions influence the natural recruitment of oaks.
The results indicate that natural regeneration of oak is limited in the area but that the presence of canopy openings and low competition can promote recruitment. Gendered Activism of Afghan Exiles: Navigating National Politics in Transnational Settings (Post-2021)
This interdisciplinary research examines the activism of Afghan exiles following the Taliban’s 2021 takeover. It focuses on their strategies, resources, opportunities, and challenges in their transnational activism, as well as the influence of gender on activism. Findings suggest that women lead transnational efforts but encounter barriers in a male-dominated landscape, particularly in their political endeavours, while men often prioritise economic stability. Digital tools are essential, but access remains unequal. International civil society and support networks provide emotional and resource assistance. The research highlights the need to foster unity and trust among the Afghan diaspora and to secure international support for Afghan women’s voices, suggesting further exploration of intersectionality in women's roles as transnational social and political actors
