This master’s thesis explores how the return of the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) influences social acceptance and management in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) rivers in western Norway, using the Bondalselva River as a case study. The research focuses on how different stakeholders – including anglers, landowners, local authorities, and community members – perceive and respond to tensions between predator conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources. While the Atlantic salmon is a threatened species of great ecological and economic value, the otter has recovered following a period of near extinction, now reappearing in many rivers. This has introduced new challenges for local management.
Using qualitative research design, in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 local actors. A social constructivist framework was applied to analyze how values, norms, and institutional structures shape perceptions of the otter. The findings reveal a wide range of attitudes, from those who view the otter as a natural part of the ecosystem to those who consider it a threat to salmon populations and local economies.
The study highlights the importance of local knowledge and stakeholder involvement in wildlife management. When national conservation goals are perceived to conflict with local interests, it can undermine trust in authorities and fuel resistance. The conflicts identified are not solely about the species itself, but also about differing understandings of nature and legitimacy in decision-making processes. This thesis contributes to a broader understanding of how incorporating social perspectives can lead to more inclusive and effective environmental governance
Identification of resistant variants in estrogen receptor positive breast cancer tissue with cross-over neoadjuvant treatment using whole exome sequencing
Breast cancer has long been the most common cancer among women in Norway. Since the Cancer Registry began documenting cases in the 1950s, the number of yearly breast cancer diagnoses have doubled to 4,076 in 2023. Over 70% of breast cancer patients exhibit an overexpression of the estrogen receptor (ER). Endocrine therapies for ER+ breast cancer include aromatase inhibitors (AIs) exemestane and letrozole, which suppress estrogen production by inhibiting aromatase enzyme from converting adrenal androgens into estrogens. Reduced estrogen levels promote tumor shrinkage, facilitating easier surgical removal. Highly heterogeneous tumors complicate successful treatment outcomes as they have been linked to treatment resistance.
The Neoletexe trial explores the lack of cross-resistance between letrozole and exemestane, where biopsies were taken at three time points in postmenopausal women with ER-positive breast cancer. Biopsies were collected before any treatment, 2 months after first treatment, and 2 months after second treatment before surgery.
The objective of this study is to identify coding somatic mutations linked to resistance to AIs, with a focus on recurring mutations across all three time points, which could potentially serve as predictive biomarkers.
In this study, genomic DNA was isolated from breast tumor tissue samples collected from eleven patients included in the Neoletexe trial across three time points. Each DNA sample was fragmented, hybridized and amplified prior to whole exome sequencing (WES). Sequenced data was processed and filtered using DPclust pipeline, followed by further computational analysis in R.
The WES data revealed a great variety of somatic mutations as only three variants were found to be shared across the patients. The majority of variants detected were found resistant to both AIs, while more variants were identified as resistant to exemestane with only a few variants resistant to letrozole. WES can be used to get comprehensive analysis of assessing treatment response, and this work provides insights into the molecular mechanisms driving tumor progression under aromatase inhibition and may facilitate the development of novel personalized treatment strategies
Green structure plays a vital role in urban ecosystems by improving air quality, regulating temperature, supporting biodiversity, and providing recreational opportunities. The Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO) has developed a national green-structure map for urban areas. However, a comprehensive spatial analysis of its structure and ecological functionality has not yet been done. This study aims to quantify the spatial characteristics of green structures in Oslo using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and landscape metrics.
A spatial analysis was conducted using Fragstats to evaluate fragmentation and connectivity in NIBIO's green-structure map. The results indicate that Oslo's green spaces are highly fragmented, with numerous small patches and limited connectivity between green areas. Tree and shrub vegetation exhibited the lowest Aggregation Index (AI), suggesting significant fragmentation, while bodies of water displayed higher connectivity, functioning as natural corridors within the urban landscape.
To supplement the analysis, a green-structure map was generated from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery and raster-based height data (nDSM). While this map demonstrated that satellite-based classification could provide an overall representation of urban green spaces, it also highlighted limitations in crowded built areas where vegetation from urban surfaces remains challenging.
This study confirms that fragmentation is a crucial challenge for Oslo's green structure and that quantitative spatial analysis can provide valuable insights for urban planning and green structure management. Metrics such as (LPI), (NP), and (AI) offer equitable measures of green structure conditions, supporting informed decision-making. Future research should explore strategies to enhance urban green connectivity, such as ecological corridors and improved integration of green spaces in city planning
Scientific assessment of risk from trade to CITES-listed species of sturgeons and paddlefishes
The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) has assessed whether trade with sturgeons is a risk to wild populations. For two out of eleven species, international trade is considered non-detrimental to their survival. For the remaining nine species, all trade with wild-caught fish is considered detrimental, while VKM is unable to determine whether trade with fish from aquaculture will be detrimental to the species’ survival due to lack of information. VKM is the national Scientific Authority for the Convention on International Trade with Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). We have assessed the potential detriment of international trade to sturgeons on assignment from the Norwegian Environment Agency (NEA), who are the national Management Authority under CITES. The risk assessment will be used by NEA for processing import/export permits for sturgeons and products thereof, such as caviar, in compliance with the Norwegian CITES Regulation. The assessment comprises eleven species of sturgeons and paddlefishes, of which ten have been imported to or exported from Norway the past ten years. The last species is commonly traded internationally but has yet not been imported to or exported from Norway. For each species, the assessment is based on knowledge of the species’ biology, environment, use, and level of trade. For two of the eleven species that have been assessed, international trade does not pose a threat to their survival in the wild. For the remaining nine species, all trade with wild-caught fish will be detrimental to their survival. For fish and products of fish from aquaculture, VKM is unable to determine whether international trade is detrimental to the species’ survival in the wild, as the available information on the impact of aquaculture on wild populations is conflicting and insufficient. Trade is not detrimental for the following species: Acipenser transmontanus, Polyodon spathula Not concluded for the following species: Acipenser baerii, Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, Acipenser naccarii, Acipenser persicus, Acipenser ruthenus, Acipenser schrenckii, Acipenser stellatus, Huso dauricus, Huso huso “Sturgeons is the most threatened group of species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Even though most of the trade is with fish from aquaculture, the level of uncertainty regarding consequences for the wild populations is high,” says Scientific Leader Eli K. Rueness. VKM proposes that the risk assessment for each species could be applied for a period of five years, unless the IUCN Red List publishes updated assessments where any of the species are given a higher risk category.Scientific assessment of risk from trade to CITES-listed species of sturgeons and paddlefishespublishedVersio
Increased canine pancreas-specific lipase concentration and possible associations with selected clinical outcomes in dogs with acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea syndrome (AHDS)
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this master’s thesis is to gain a better understanding of how work
with food courage and meal enjoyment is perceived and implemented in practice by preschool
staff, and the impact Matjungelen barnehage may have as a supportive intervention program.
Background: Dietary habits are established early in life and tend to be persistent. Adhering to
Norwegian dietary guidelines promotes good health and prevent disease, yet many children do
not meet the recommendations. Preschools play a crucial role in shaping children’s diet, given
their role in their daily routine. Previous interventions have promoted healthier eating habits,
but more knowledge on how factors like motivation, competence, and meal enjoyment can
influence children’s diets is needed. Matjungelen barnehage introduces a new approach to
food courage and meal enjoyment, but its effectiveness has not yet been documented.
Method: A qualitative method with semi-structured individual interviews was used to collect
data. The selection of informants consists of female preschool employees, with education and
experience in the preschool field. Data from the interviews were registered by audio recording
through a dictaphone app, integrated into University of Oslo’s digital tool “nettskjema”. Five
of the interviews were done physically in the preschools where the informants worked, while
one interview was conducted digitally using the tool, Teams. The data material from the audio
recordings was transcribed and then analysed using the method systematic text condensation.
Results: The informants were engaged in promoting food courage and meal enjoyment in the
preschool, highlighting the importance of community in fostering positive attitudes towards
food. Matjungelen was seen as a useful tool, offering activity ideas for both staff and children.
Although one informant questioned whether Matjungelen’s focus might create unrealistic
expectations for children’s curiosity, there was broad agreement that it demystifies food and
foster a positive meal culture. Good planning and a safe environment were considered
essential, though limited resources could make certain activities challenging to implement.
Children’s involvement and autonomy were important for food courage and meal enjoyment.
Conclusion: Community, planning and organization, and using food and meals as a learning
arena were important in promoting food courage and meal enjoyment in the kindergarten.
Matjungelen was sees as a valuable tool that engaged the children and created a supportive
food culture, while also simplifying the integration of food activities into a busy kindergarten
routine, but lack of time and resources was identified as limiting factors for implementation
Circulation of oocysts in two broiler flocks vaccinated with live attenuated coccidiosis vaccine
Ever since the Norwegian chicken producers phased out coccidiostats in 2015, vaccination against coccidiosis has been a central part of preventing the disease in Norwegian flocks. In this thesis, we examined how oocysts circulate in two broiler flocks vaccinated with a live attenuated coccidiosis vaccine, EVANT® by Hipra. We collected pooled samples of fresh feces daily, and Hipra collected litter samples weekly for oocyst count. The faecal samples were analysed in three parallel runs using a modified McMaster-method. This showed that the oocysts were evenly distributed in the mixed pooled sample, therefore one run should be sufficient. The daily samples provided a more detailed picture of how oocysts are excreted in the flock than the weekly ones. Simultaneously, the results showed a correspondence between the faecal and litter samples. Lesion scoring was performed in both flocks. The results from both the oocyst count and lesion scoring were put in context with environmental observations and slaughter results from the flocks. The two flocks showed different approaches to
development of immunity, with one getting the vaccine off to a good start making the flock immune, while the other suppressed field strains using a dry environment and thus not achieving any effect of the vaccine.VE
The topic of this thesis is court-annexed mediation in the land consolidation court, and the parties experience of this process. This master´s thesis explores how the parties experience mediation in the land consolidation court, with particular focus on cases from rural areas in Norway.
The mein research question is: «How do parties in the land consolidation court experience the outcome of mediation, and how does this effect their future use of the property?»
To answer the main question, I have used three sub-questions:
* How have the parties experienced the mediation process?
* How does the agreement function over time?
* How does the mediation affect cooperation between the parties?
To shed light on these research questions, I have conducted qualitative interviews with selected parties. I was granted access to mediated cases from the Sogn og Fjordane and Innlandet Land Consolidation Courts from the period 2018–2023. From these cases, I interviewed five informants about their experiences with judicial mediation in the land consolidation court. I focused particularly on how the mediation was conducted and how the mediator's conduct influenced the informants' perception of the process.
The findings of the study show that most informants have a positive experience with judicial mediation in the land consolidation court, especially when the mediator is active, professionally competent, and able to strike a good balance between guidance and neutrality. The perceived quality of the mediation process is closely linked to the mediator’s role and their ability to adapt to the case. The use of visual aids such as maps and images, as well as the implementation of on-site inspections, are highlighted as important factors in fostering understanding and reducing misunderstandings in complex cases.
Regarding the impact on the ongoing relationship between the parties, the findings suggest that judicial mediation has limited effect in reducing the underlying level of conflict. Nevertheless, several informants report increased clarity and a greater sense of security in the use of their property following mediation. This may be interpreted as a functional improvement, even if the social relationship between the parties remains unchanged. The agreements reached appear, for the most part, to function well in practice.
This study contributes valuable insight into how judicial mediation functions in the context of the land consolidation court and may be relevant for the further development of mediation practices in this setting
Gruvedrift, livsgrunnlag og skogbevaring i DR Kongo
This doctoral thesis investigates the nexus of
mineral extraction, livelihoods and forest conserva-
tion in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)
in three papers. The first two papers are set in the
eastern DRC that is particularly abundant in min-
erals, such as gold, coltan and cassiterite. Most of
these are extracted in artisanal mines under non-
industrialised production methods. The implica-
tions of mineral discoveries on deforestation in the
surrounding forests are thematised in the first pa-
per. Findings show that increasing human activi-
ties around mines lead to forest loss that well ex-
ceeds the area cleared for mining.
The second paper is also concerned with artisanal
mining in the eastern DRC but shifts the focus on
its implications for rural livelihoods. Results indi-
cate that diversification into mining helps small-
holder farmers to cope in an increasingly difficult
farming environment.
Finally, the third paper looks at the role of pro-
tected areas (PAs) in the conservation of the
Congo Basin rainforest of the DRC. While the
pressure on protected forest increases, the paper
shows that many PAs are not equipped to face
these threats as it currently stands.
The analyses rely on econometric impact evalu-
ation methods, geospatial data analysis and the
analysis of primary data collected in the South
Leveraging sensor data to forecast energy usage - an analysis for university buildings
Buildings account for around 40% of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Previous studies found that the operation of buildings is the main driver of energy consumption. Therefore, there is an urgent need for strategies that support more sustainable building operations. This thesis explores how data analysis and machine learning (ML) can be applied to sensor data to improve energy efficiency on a university campus. Using data from six buildings, this study predicts electricity and district heating consumption based on features like occupancy, time-related features and outdoor temperature. A comprehensive data analysis is performed and three ML models, Random Forest Regression (RFR), Gradient Boosting Regression (GBR) and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR), were implemented and evaluated. RFR performed better than GBR in predicting electricity consumption, while GBR performed better for district heating prediction. PLSR showed the highest overall predictive accuracy. In PLSR, electricity and visits appeared as the most influential in the models’ prediction ability. For the tree-based electricity predictions, visits and bookings features were the most important variables, while for district heating predictions, outdoor temperature was the dominant feature. The findings suggest that ML models can effectively support demand-driven energy management by enabling accurate forecasting. This work contributes to the growing field of smart and sustainable buildings, and highlights the role of data-driven approaches
