Efficient early-phase regulatory processes are critical for achieving sustainable land development, yet they are often hindered by complexity, fragmentation, and prolonged procedures.
As the future is increasingly perceived as uncertain and urban planning becomes more complex, the need for collaboration across different disciplines, understandings, and cultures grows. However, this often involves friction, disagreement, and fundamental differences. This study explores how various actors interact within a complex planning process through a qualitative case study of Økern S – a transformation area in Hovinbyen, Oslo. The theoretical foundation is based on Urban Planning as a Trading Zone by Mäntysalo and Balducci (2013), which expands on Galison’s (2019) concept of trading zones in conjunction with boundary objects (Star & Griesemer, 1989). Together, this provides a conceptual framework for analyzing how actors with different professional, institutional, and value-based perspectives negotiate meaning and understanding. Through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, the study investigates how different governance logics – particularly the tension between competing notions of legitimacy – shape interaction. The findings reveal that the Økern S planning process is characterized by asymmetric power relations, conflicting future visions, and a lack of a robust framework for translation. The study contributes to the operationalization of the trading zone concept in a Norwegian planning context and offers new insights into how translation practices influence urban development
Det vil derfor være potensialet for økt lønnsomhet på det europeiske markedet om Norge innfører EUDR.To meet the UN's sustainability goals, a number of regulations and directives have been adopted in the EU. Deforestation accounts for approximately 10% of all CO2 emissions globally, and the EU has now adopted the EUDR, which will limit imports of products that contribute to deforestation. The regulations have been postponed once to give stakeholders time to adjust. Several stakeholders are left with questions related to the practical implementation and what the actual purpose of the regulations is. This master's thesis focuses on the consequences the regulation will have for the Norwegian forestry industry.
We have conducted interviews with stakeholders in the forestry industry, and looked at economic conditions to form a picture of how Norway is prepared to adopt the EUDR. The regulation is not designed for European countries, and therefore interesting issues arise around
which timber can be traded and which cannot.
We have concluded that there is a high probability that the EUDR will have a price-driving
effect where the price of timber will increase, especially on the EU market. Those who will benefit most from this price increase will be Norwegian forest owners who will now receive a higher price for their timber. Potentially 580,000m3 of timber can no longer be traded due to EUDR, but this will have limited impact on total harvesting, as Norway has the opportunity to increase harvesting significantly.
The Norwegian forest industry is in a good position as an exporter. With a combination of higher timber prices and good ability to digital transformation, this can be seen as a competitive advantage. There will therefore be a potential for increased profitability on the European market, if Norway implements EUDR
This study investigated transient simulation of green roofs using the groundwater flow model MODFLOW 6. The work builds on previous research conducted on the green roof test sites at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU). The main objective was to estimate the drainable porosity () of the storage layer. Previously estimated values for hydraulic conductivity and observed outflow were used as the basis for the simulations.
The methodology consisted of three steps: reproduction of previously obtained steady-state results, development of a new steady-state model using observed outflow as a boundary condition, and the establishment of a transient model with time series of observed outflow as input. Simulated water levels were compared with observed water levels from eight sensors, using Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) and Kling–Gupta efficiency (KGE) as evaluation metrics.
The results show that the simulations align well with theoretical expectations. Slow drainage was observed for high values, and faster drainage for lower values. The simulated water level curves followed the same general trend as the observations. However, no single value provided the best fit across all sensors, which may indicate that the assumption of homogeneity in the storage layer does not hold. This could also be a result of deviations in assumed bottom elevations or measurement uncertainty. The estimated value that provided the best overall fit was in the range of 0.15–0.20, which aligns well with a previously calculated value of 0.22.
There is some uncertainty associated with the use of NSE and KGE in this context, as these metrics are likely to favour simulations with faster drainage.
Overall, the study demonstrates that MODFLOW 6 has potential for simulating runoff from green roofs. For future work, parameter calibration using PEST should be explored. In addition, a more detailed investigation of the roof geometry and its impact on model accuracy is recommended. It would also be of interest to explore simulations that include both drainage and rainfall input
Future food production faces the immense challenge of feeding a growing population with an increasing demand for resource-intensive food in a sustainable way. The high environmental footprint of conventional food production opens the floor to alternative sources of food and feed, with single-cell protein (SCP) emerging as a promising solution. SCP offers a high protein content (up to 80%), favorable amino acid profiles, and the presence of carbohydrates, vitamins, fats, and antioxidants increasing the nutritional value. The production is independent of seasonal and climate variations, has low requirements for arable land and resources, and has low greenhouse gas emissions.
SCP is generally produced by high cell density cultivations (HCDCs) to maximize the volumetric yield. However, conventional HCDC relies on aerobic respiration, which is limited by the low solubility and diffusion rate of oxygen in liquid. Oxygen limitations may result in anoxic zones accompanied by fermentation and accumulation of unwanted byproducts inhibiting growth. Denitrification, the stepwise reduction of nitrate (NO3-) to nitrogen (N2) via nitrite (NO2-), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrous oxide (N2O), is the most efficient form of anaerobic respiration and overcomes the rate-limitations inherent in aerobic respiration due to the high solubility of NO3- and NO2-. Previous attempts at HCDC with denitrification most likely failed due to denitrification-driven increases in pH necessitating tight pH control and the provision of NO3- as a salt resulting in salt accumulation.
This work presents a novel method for anaerobic HCDC that overcomes these challenges by using nitric acid (HNO3) as both the pH regulator and the provider of NO3- for denitrification. The bioreactor is operated as a pH-stat where denitrification-driven increases in pH trigger HNO3 injections, which in turn control the provision of the carbon source from a separate feed pump. The study was initiated by proof-of-concept experiments that demonstrated the viability of the method by growing the model denitrifier Paracoccus denitrificans Pd1222 to a density of more than 20 g dry weight L-1 (Paper I). We were able to reach the expected yield based on the provided substrate, but the growth rate was much lower than what we observed in low-density batch cultures. In addition to the low growth rate, we observed 1) the accumulation of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), a storage and energy reserve typically encountered during carbon excess, and 2) a low expression of NirS, the enzyme responsible for the reduction of NO2- to NO.
These challenges were addressed in subsequent experiments where we aimed to develop the method further (Paper II). We switched to Paracoccus pantotrophus GB17, a closely related strain with a higher NirS pool, that was also shown to adapt better to the bioreactor environment. The compositions of the feed solutions were refined to prevent accumulation of byproducts, including PHA, and improve the growth conditions. We incorporated ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) as the nitrogen source to remove the cost of NO3- assimilation and designed new acid solutions with minerals and trace elements. We hypothesized that the slow growth rate was due to the high concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the liquid lowering the pH, thereby interfering with the provision of the substrates which is triggered by alkalization. This was investigated through in silico simulations of the NO3-, CO2, and pH kinetics in the bioreactor and rapid sampling of the bioreactor. The modeling and empirical data showed that the NO3-, which was injected at intervals of several minutes, was depleted within seconds. We aimed at improving the CO2 removal by dynamically changing the sparging flow rate and pH setpoint in response to changing partial pressure of CO2 in the off-gas and experimenting with lower pH limits. Although the process is still limited by a slow growth rate, we were able to reach densities of more than 60 g dry weight L-1 using P. pantotrophus. The biomass was analyzed and shown to have an average protein content of 75%.
While anaerobic high cell density cultivation is proven feasible, one major challenge for the upscaling is the high cost of HNO3. We have therefore validated HNO3 produced by N2 Applied using plasma technology, which is expected to become a cheaper and more sustainable alternative in the future (Paper III). Biomass produced using our process was also tested by the Center for Feed Technology (Fôrtek, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway) in successful feed trials with Atlantic salmon. This demonstrates that SCP produced by our process can be used as a protein source in aquaculture feed.
The work presented in this thesis bridges fundamental research on microbial physiology with applied science, demonstrating the proof-of-concept, development, and commercial potential of a novel method for anaerobic high cell density cultivation. Although only tested for heterotrophic growth on glucose, the process has the potential to be adapted to a wide range of strains, substrates, and metabolic strategies. This work paves the way for anaerobic high cell density cultivation as a supplement to existing methods, advancing the field of sustainable food production.
Environmental risk assessment of the genetically modified vaccine Recombitek®C4
Environmental risk assessment of the genetically modified vaccine Recombitek®C4publishedVersio

altså enkelttrær med høy sannsynlighet for å falle over distribusjonsnettet under vindbelastning,
omfattende trefall i Agder i 2023, og analyserer 222 trær hvorav 78 falt over distribusjonsnettet.
nettselskapets prioriteringer. En lav terskel fanger opp flere potensielle risikotrær, mens en høy
terskel gir færre, men mer treffsikre prediksjoner.
Treefall is one of the leading causes of power outages in Norway, and represents a growing
challenge due to increasing electrification, higher expectations for supply reliability, and more
frequent extreme weather events. Grid operators have traditionally focused vegetation
management efforts on undergrowth and trees within the designated clearing corridor, while the
extent of measures outside this corridor has varied. Some grid operators have expanded their
efforts beyond the corridor, including an increased emphasis on forestry expertise. Nevertheless,
there is still a lack of tools that offer objective and operational decision support.
The aim of this study was to develop a predictive model to identify risk trees, individual trees with
a high probability of falling onto distribution lines during wind exposure, using remote sensing and
machine learning. The study is based on storm Babet, which caused widespread treefall in Agder
in 2023, and analyzes 222 trees, of which 78 had fallen on to the powerlines. The machine learning
algorithm Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) was used to develop two models: one combining
field and remotely sensed variables, and one based solely on remote sensing.
The model achieved a balanced accuracy of 74.3% and a Cohen’s kappa of 0.48 when field data
were included, and 68.5% and kappa ~0.34 for the remote sensing model. This indicates that good
predictive accuracy can be achieved without the need for resource-intensive fieldwork. Key risk
factors identified include shallow soil depth (particularly on the windward side), height
differences from neighboring trees, wind exposure, and terrain roughness and slope in the root
zone.
The practical use of the model is highly sensitive to the choice of threshold value, the limit at which
a tree is classified as a risk tree. Small adjustments to the threshold significantly influence the
balance between precision and the number of identified risk trees, making it possible to tailor the
model to a grid operators priorities. A low threshold identifies more potential risk trees, while a
high threshold yields fewer but more accurate predictions.
This study demonstrates that predictive models based on remote sensing can provide valuable
decision-support tools for grid operators seeking more targeted and efficient vegetation
management strategy. Such tools have the potential to reduce outage-related costs and improve
supply reliability, both of which are critical for building a more resilient and climate-adapted
power grid
Assessing 3D Printing’s Potential to Enhance: Efficiency, Sustainability and Cost-Effectiveness in the Norwegian Construction Industry
The Norwegian construction industry faces a growing need to reduce material waste, construction time, and CO₂ emissions. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing of concrete, is a technology with the potential to meet these expectations and guide Norway towards a more environmentally friendly construction industry.
The technology addresses the previously mentioned needs by enabling significant material savings, increasing design freedom, and reducing construction time by up to 70%. However, it remains in its early stages in Norway, with few pilot projects, as well as low awareness and knowledge among stakeholders, which slows down development. This text combines a structured literature review of international research from the last ten years with semi-structured interviews with contractors, material suppliers, technology manufacturers, and public authorities to map both technological advantages and practical obstacles
The results indicate that national testing and approval protocols, incentive schemes for pilot projects, and strengthened interdisciplinary education for engineers and contractors are crucial to realizing the potential of 3D printing. The implementation of these measures can establish a foundation for a digital, resource- and climate-friendly construction industry in Norway
