Knowledge-based management of Nitrogen is crucial in Norwegian agriculture to ensure good crop yields and to reduce unwanted loss of Nitrogen to the environment. Use of new technology for registration of variation in plant and soil N status and precise fertilization can improve the Nitrogen use efficiency. The market offers a “jungle” of potential sensors, however they are all generally lacking testing and verification to independent data reflecting Norwegian soils and plant growth conditions. The purpose of this study is to assess whether different sensors can provide farmers with reliable and valuable information about variations in plant growth and soil content of plant-available Nitrogen throughout a growing season. The study was conducted at two experimental fields, Pilotfeltet and E166, at NMBU, Ås. Soil samples were taken, and measurements by various sensors were performed throughout the 2024 growing season. The soil samples were analysed for plant-available Nitrogen, using both the standard method and a simpler, alternative method based on an ion selective electrode. The data from these methods were compared with measurements from the sensors: Yara N-Sensor, DJI Mavic Multispectral drone, Agdir’s Soil Scouts, NPK-sensor from ComWin, and porewater analysis from AgriSenze. The sensors showed varying results depending on Nitrogen fertilization (treatment), Nitrogen concentration in the soil, and the growth stage of the plants. The spectral methods (Yara N-Sensor and images from the DJI Mavic Multispectral) best reflected the variations in plant-available Nitrogen content in the soil, as measured by the standard method. This study highlights the need for testing and verification of available sensor technology with independent data from Norwegian soils and growing conditions. Furthermore, it also emphasizes the importance of close collaboration between research and applied agronomy. For sensor technology to be further developed and properly tested and verified, the need for solid understanding of measurement results, their effects, and practical application are crucial

Videre forskning bør undersøke hvordan målrettede tiltak og utforming kan bidra til mer inkluderende og aktive nærmiljøer, særlig i rurale strøkAbstract Background: Physical inactivity and social health disparities are among the most pressing public health challenges in Norway. Inclusive and accessible meeting places in the local environment may promote physical activity and social cohesion, particularly in rural areas where such facilities often are limited. However, there is a lack of research on how these spaces are utilized by different age groups in the community, within Norwegian rural contexts. Objective: The study aims to map the usage patterns and activity levels at a newly established public meeting place in a rural municipality, with a particular focus on how different age groups engage with the area. Method: This is a quantitative case study based on 62 hours of systematic observation and a brief on-site questionnaire. Data collection was conducted one and six months after the opening of the Trysil-Knuten activity park. Key Findings: The public meeting place was primarily used by children and adolescents, especially in zones with challenging equipment. A total of 785 observations were recorded during the study period. Friday and Saturday had the highest number of visitors, and activity levels peaked between 12:00 and 17:00. Adults and older adults participated less in physical activity but mainly used the area for social interaction. Children were observed somewhat more frequently than adolescents, suggesting that actual use only partially aligns with the meeting place’s original goal of engaging youth. Conclusion: As a newly established facility it may take time before such meeting places are integrated into residents’ daily routines, which may have influenced both usage and the number of observations. The findings suggest untapped potential for increased engagement among adults and older individuals, and underscore the interplay between physical, social, and individual factors in shaping the use of public environments. Further research should explore how different measures and design strategies can contribute to more inclusive and activity-promoting environments, particularly in rural are

In Norway, the static four-step model RTM is primarily used, partly based on travel survey data. This approach has limited capacity to handle dynamic conditions, uncertainty estimation, and the interaction between land use and transport demand. At the same time, new data sources such as mobile phone data have opened up for more representative and up-to-date modelling. This thesis addresses an identified knowledge gap by exploring how mobile data and machine learning (ML) can be strategically applied as decision support in transport analysis. It also examines claims from previous research suggesting that machine learning models may be better suited for predictive transport analysis than the logit models currently in use. This master’s thesis investigates how machine learning (ML) can be used to predict travel distribution, based on mobile data. Deep neural networks (DNN) are compared with two tree-based models: Random Forest and XGBoost. The models are evaluated based on predictive accuracy, robustness, and practical applicability. The assessment is conducted within a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) framework. The DNN model achieves the highest explanatory power (R² = 0.76), but Random Forest performs better overall across the evaluation criteria. The study provides a conceptual proof of the value of combining mobile data with machine learning in transport analysis. A decision support tool has been developed that applies the trained models to two simulated case scenarios, where changes in distance and job locations are used to estimate redistribution of travel. The results demonstrate how ML models can be used to quantify the effects of political and infrastructural interventions, and that the models capture logical relationships between explanatory variables and travel distribution. Future research should use ML models to include uncertainty estimates in transport modelling and utilize larger and more detailed datasets to realize the full potential of deep learning models. Survival analysis is used to analyze data where the target feature is the time until a specific event occurs, taking censoring status into account, unlike traditional machine learning (ML) algorithms. This thesis investigates the use of ML-based survival analysis models to provide additional insight beyond what the traditional survival analysis methods provide, particularly in the context of the DIREKHT study. The traditional statistical methods used for survival analysis were Kaplan-Meier (KM) survival curves and Cox Proportional Hazards (PH). Based on the log-rank test, three features gave significant test statistics. Those were hpv_status, tumor_loc, and perineural_invasion. These features were also included in the best Cox PH model, which incorporated a total of 16 features. For the survival analysis with ML models, three algorithms were used, which were penalized Cox PH, Random Survival Forest (RSF), and Componentwise Gradient Boosting (CGB). Model performance was assessed by predicting individual survival curves, calculating the integrated Brier score (IBS), and permutation feature importance (PFI). Among the models, penalized Cox PH demonstrated the highest C-index (0.58166) and the lowest IBS (0.07521), although none of the models exhibited strong predictive performance. The most prominent feature identified across models was perineural_invasion, particularly for Random Survival Forest (RSF), while tumor_loc_1 (oral cavity) and tumor_loc_2 (oropharynx) were notably important for penalized Cox PH as well. Due to the low number of events in this dataset, considerable uncertainty surrounds the findings of this thesis, and the results cannot be generalized beyond this cohort. Additionally, neither traditional methods nor ML models for survival analysis identified treatment_method or radiation_dose as significant predictors for disease-free survival, indicating that a lower radiation dose did not significantly affect the outcome. These findings reflect the challenges of drawing definitive conclusions from data with a limited number of events. While this thesis provides exploratory insights, further validation using a larger patient cohort is necessary to substantiate the results

The main objective of this thesis has been to investigate whether traffic reports labeled with the explanation code "flood" can be used as an indicator for surface water flooding events during winter, and whether machine learning models can be used to predict such events. In this context, surface water flooding can be interpreted as situations where large amounts of meltwater or rainwater accumulate on the ground. By combining traffic report data with hydrological data, a statistical analysis was conducted, and a prediction model was developed using machine learning techniques (Random Forest and Random Forest). Surface water flooding events that trigger traffic reports are difficult to predict due to the complex hydrological processes that occur around freezing temperatures. An analysis which compared the general average of parameters with averages linked to traffic reports, uncovered certain relationships between hydrological parameters and traffic reports labeled "flood". The machine learning model that was developed showed promising abilities in predicting surface water flooding events. On the test set, the model achieved a precision of 0,87 and a recall of 1,00 for predicting traffic reports labeled as “flood”. This means that all actual surface water flooding events were correctly identified, while few non-events were misclassified as surface water flooding events. The current flood-warning system delivered by the Norwegian Water Resource and Energy Directorate (NVE) are based on meteorological and hydrological parameters. The results from this study indicate that machine learning models can work as a useful supplement to existing warning systems and contribute to better risk assessment. In the long term, this could help strengthen society’s preparedness for climate change

    Get PDF
This master’s thesis investigates how developments in natural gas prices have influenced CO₂ prices within the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) over the period 2010–2025. The study places particular emphasis on how this relationship has evolved in response to a rising share of renewable energy, extreme energy price movements, and geopolitical shocks. The analysis is grounded in three core hypotheses that address both classical market mechanisms and potential structural breaks. The theoretical framework is based on marginal cost theory, merit order logic, and fossil fuel substitution dynamics, while the empirical analysis employs vector autoregressive models (VAR), vector error correction models (VECM), impulse response functions (IRF), and forecast error variance decomposition (FEVD). The dataset consists of daily observations for CO₂ allowance prices (EUA), natural gas prices (TTF), and coal prices (API2) from 2010 through March 2025. The results indicate that rising natural gas prices have historically led to higher CO₂ prices, primarily through increased reliance on coal in power generation. This supports the fuel switching hypothesis, where more expensive gas makes coal more competitive, thereby increasing emissions and the demand for allowances. This relationship is strongest in the pre-COVID-19 period. During the pandemic, the connection weakens, and in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the dynamics shift markedly: coal prices exhibit a positive effect on CO₂ prices—contrary to expectations based on standard substitution patterns. This is interpreted as evidence of a regime shift, where energy security concerns and supply constraints override conventional market logic. The thesis further finds that the role of natural gas as an explanatory variable is asymmetric and regime-dependent: it is statistically insignificant in normal market conditions, negative during demand-side shocks such as the pandemic, and positive during supply crises, as in the energy shock following the war. These findings lend strong support to the third hypothesis—that the relationship between energy prices and CO₂ prices is contingent on broader structural and institutional factors. The increasing influence of renewable energy deployment, political intervention, and geopolitical uncertainty appear to reshape the functioning of the carbon market. The study concludes that understanding CO₂ price formation in today’s market context cannot be achieved by focusing solely on fossil fuel prices. A more holistic approach is required—one that integrates energy policy, technological innovation, and macroeconomic and geopolitical variables. It is recommended that future research incorporate additional explanatory factors such as GDP, inflation, quota supply dynamics, and regulatory interventions. The findings have significant implications for climate policy design, risk assessment in energy markets, and the broader discourse on carbon pricing in an era marked by persistent uncertainty and structural transformation across European energy systems

    Sirkulær plastøkonomi i norsk akvakultur

Sammendrag Oppgaven undersøker hvordan norsk akvakultur implementerer sirkulærøkonomiske tiltak for å redusere plastavfall. Stormwater resilient cities Purifying stormwater by nature based solutions on private residential property in Oslo

    No full text
Rivers have been of significant importance to humans throughout history. They have provided transport, watered fertile alluvial ground, provided power for early machinery and discharged waste. Over the last centuries river tributaries have become an increasingly rare site across urban watersheds. Despite a period of being marginalized and ignored, they are one of the major reasons cities were built and developed where they are. Rivers have simply been removed, diverted or put underground and the rivers that remain on the surface are severely constrained, surrounded by largely impervious surfaces. As the threat of climate change becomes ever larger, the issues of this development rise to the surface as flooding due to ever larger rain events is set to become more common. These rain events then take up pollution from the impervious surfaces, sending ever more polluted stormwater towards the rivers, who’s ability to purify stormwater has been severely compromised due to constraints, sending polluted stormwater to the ocean. An example of the issues this can bring is the Oslofjord that has recently often been described as nearly dead of marine life. Although polluted stormwater is not the biggest threat to the Oslofjord, it is still a significant issue and to solve such a major issue every little thing helps. To combat these issues of urban watershed management, several theories and methods inspired by nature have been developed over the last decades. These theories include nature-based solutions, blue-green infrastructure and sustainable urban drainage systems. These theories include methods for purifying stormwater and reducing stormwater runoff in urban watersheds. Cities like Oslo have developed action plans to combat the looming climate change threat using these nature-based solutions. As a result, all new developments are required to account for open nature-based stormwater solutions within the site and if that is not deemed possible, the developer must justify why other solutions were necessary. Having this in place for new developments is however not enough for Oslo to become truly stormwater resilient. Changing already built-up areas will also be needed. Water does not care if sites are publicly or privately owned, it simply follows topography. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize public as well as private land to purify stormwater and reduce stormwater runoff using nature-based solutions. By understanding the history that has led to these issues and utilizing the methods developed to combat them, this thesis aims at developing a design proposal that can purify stormwater and reduce stormwater runoff in the urban watershed of Oslo. To explore the potential, several predominantly residential sites are chosen and analysed to find the site with the highest potential to reach these goals and answer the research question: How can residential areas be redesigned to improve watershed management by reducing and purifying urban run-off

Photo-Recapture of Great Crested Newts Reveals Extent of Pond Fidelity and Movement Within and Between Ponds

    1. Expanding the current knowledge of great crested newts’ (Triturus cristatus) pond fidelity and movements between ponds is crucial for effective conservation planning and habitat management. Individual differences in great crested newts’ pond usage and tendency to enter traps (trappability) may affect research results, hence it is important to understand and quantify the variation within populations. 2. Over a period of three years, differing pond usage and fidelity were examined through a capture-photo-recapture study of 347 newts in three ponds. The ponds were located eight, 48 and 58 meters apart. In this system, individual newts displayed varying degrees of pond fidelity as some individuals returned to the same pond for two consecutive years whereas others switched ponds between breeding seasons. Some also moved between ponds during the breeding seasons. The majority (73.8 %) of the newts were only observed in one pond. However, about a quarter of the newts moved between two or three ponds. 3. A total of 132 pond switches were recorded. Fifty-nine of them were observed within a breeding season, and 73 between breeding seasons. The highest number of pond switches by an individual was three within a season, and the highest number within and between breeding seasons combined was five. I found a significant positive relationship between weight and the number of pond switches, and the newts that moved between the ponds were generally larger than those that stayed put in one pond. 4. I observed substantial differences in individuals' susceptibility to being trapped: of the 347 individuals identified in this study, 99 were only caught once, whereas 32 were trapped eight or more times over the three-season period. The mean number of catches per individual was 3.3, and the highest was 16. I found that heavier individuals were trapped more often than small ones. 5. If frequent trapping induces trap shy (individuals avoiding traps) and trap happy individuals (individuals seeking out traps), this can in turn affect great crested newt population and mortality rate estimates. My results suggest that there is indeed substantial individual variation in the susceptibility to being trapped. I therefore recommend capture-mark-recapture research on great crested newts to avoid excessive trapping, and to consider their differing pond usages by releasing the individuals back into the same area as they were caught. 6. My finding that many newt individuals switch ponds both within and between breeding seasons also highlights the importance of protecting the land surrounding ponds and the corridors between them in addition to the ponds themselves

Abstract Background: Greater attention has been given to promoting health-enhancing and inclusive communities through national and international policies, in the recent years. Research shows that neighbourhood projects can have an impact on social capital, community cohesion, and well-being, particularly in areas with socioeconomic differences. The neighbourhood project Nabolag og matglede, combines cooking and social interaction to encourages connections among residents in a diverse local community. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to gain insight into the participants own experiences of taking part in a neighbourhood project, focusing on factors that promote or hinder participation, and on aspects seen as important and meaningful by the participants. Method: A qualitative method using semi-structured interviews was used. It ended up being eight participants from the Nabolag og matglede project. Interviews were recorded using the Nettskjema app and transcribed. Systematic text condensation was used for the analysis of the data. Results: The analysis discovered four main themes: the importance of a meeting place, engaging in activities together, getting to know others in the local community, and for it to last. Participants emphasized safety, belonging, and the development of new friendships. The cooking activity encouraged social interaction and learning about healthy eating.
