Hidden semi-Markov models for rainfall-related insurance claims
We analyze the temporal structure of a novel insurance dataset about home insurance claims related to rainfall-induced damage in Norway, and employ a hidden semi-Markov model to capture the non-Gaussian nature and temporal dynamics of these claims. By exploring a wide range of candidate distributions and evaluating their goodness-of-fit as well as commonly used risk measures, we identify a suitable model for effectively modeling insurance losses stemming from rainfall-related incidents. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the temporal aspects of weather-related insurance claims and demonstrate that the proposed hidden semi-Markov model adeptly captures this feature. Moreover, the model estimates reveal a concerning trend: the risks associated with heavy rain in the context of home insurance have exhibited an upward trajectory between 2004 and 2020, aligning with the evidence of a changing climate. This insight has significant implications for insurance companies, providing them with valuable information for accurate and robust modeling in the face of climate uncertainties. By shedding light on the evolving risks related to heavy rain and their impact on home insurance, our study offers essential insights for insurance companies to adapt their strategies and effectively manage these emerging challenges. It underscores the necessity of incorporating climate change considerations into insurance models and emphasizes the importance of continuously monitoring and reassessing risk levels associated with rainfall-induced damage. Ultimately, our research contributes to the broader understanding of climate risk in the insurance industry and supports the development of resilient and sustainable insurance practices
Relational incentive contracts for teams of multitasking agents
We analyze optimal relational contracts for a group (team) of multitasking agents with hidden actions. Contracts are based on noisy signals that may be correlated across agents and between tasks. The optimal contract defines a performance measure in the form of an index (a scorecard) for each agent, and awards a bonus to the highest performing agent, provided his or her index exceeds a hurdle. An optimal index generally involves benchmarking against other agents, and this may, in combination with the hurdle requirement, introduce a cooperative element in the otherwise competitive incentive structure.
For agents with separate tasks and normally distributed signals, we find that strong correlation (either positive or negative) across agents is beneficial, while larger correlation within each agent's tasks is detrimental for efficiency, and that this has implications for optimal organization of tasks. For agents with common tasks the optimal contract may have features of both tournament and team incentives. The tournament aspect incentivizes an agent to exert effort on his own task, while the hurdle necessary to receive a bonus also incentivizes an agent to help his peers. In our setting this hybrid scheme can only be optimal if signals from agents' tasks are negatively correlated. Otherwise pure team incentives are optimal
Guarantees of Origin and Competition in the Spot Electricity Market
We study the effect of introducing a market for green energy attributes on the market for the energy itself. In Europe, renewable energy producers receive Guarantees of Origin (GOs) that they can sell to consumers who wish to declare their electricity consumption as “green”. In a model of price competition, we show how the introduction of such a GO market can increase competition in the spot electricity market, leading to reduced electricity prices. In the current market design, the trade of GOs is not restricted by the physical transmission capacity in the spot electricity market. However, since the production capacity of GOs is still limited by the total dispatch of electricity, suppliers have incentives to compete more fiercely in the spot market. This pro-competitive effect disappears if the physical transmission capacity is also imposed on the GO market
The Principal-Agent Problem in Finance: Performance Clauses in Shipping Charterparties : The misalignment of incentives for performance between shipowners and charterers regarding ‘Good weather conditions’ in time charter contracts
This study investigates how definitions of ‘Good weather conditions’ influence speed and
fuel consumption claims in dry bulk shipping time charter contracts. Using observed
weather data, we simulate various definitions to model the relationship between ‘Good
weather conditions’ and the expected number of good weather days. We examine the four
key parameters defining a ‘Good weather day’ through a random forest model and assess
the financial implications of varying these definitions through a case study.
The analysis shows that charterparties tend to define the threshold for what is considered
‘Good weather conditions’ too strict in relation to the intended threshold for weather
so heavy that the warranted vessel speed and fuel consumption cannot be reasonably
expected. Further, the results show that whether to allow for periods where the vessel
is negatively influenced by currents (that is, a negative current factor) or not has the
largest impact on the expected number of good weather days. Additionally, results suggest
that a 2.4 m significant wave height limit is the optimal limit to use when intending to
describe Douglas sea state 3 in conjunction with Beaufort limit 4. Alternatively, results
show that a combined sea and swell limit of 3.25 m can resemble the same definition of
weather conditions; however, we argue that the significant wave height is more precise
in its ability to describe the weather that affects a vessel’s performance. Further, a case
study suggests that the increasing practice of including the ‘no extrapolation’ wording
in present charterparties significantly influences the financial implications of claims for
underperformance. This trend makes the definition of ‘Good weather conditions’ even
more critical for claim potential.
The study points to a misalignment of incentives between charterers and shipowners when
setting good weather definitions in time charter contracts. This misalignment represents
a principal-agent problem and can lead to speculative behaviour and less effective clauses.
We argue that a more objective definition of good weather in performance clauses is more
efficient for both shipowners, charterers, and the environment.nhhma
Is There Gold in Green? A Modified Perspective of Income Developments in Active Agriculture
This thesis seeks to answer how active agricultural incomes in Norway have evolved from
1970 to 2021, by modifying the aggregated account. The calculation of the farmer’s income
has been a contentious debate for a longer period, and our aim is for this thesis to calculate a
more realistic development model for agricultural incomes.
By utilizing agricultural statistics from various sources, we present the modified aggregated
account, as outlined by the Grytten Committee in 2022, spanning from 1970 to 2021. Our
findings indicate that active farmers generally have a lower pre-tax income when applying this
framework compared to the original aggregated account. Our objective is not to provide a
specific figure for the earnings of Norwegian farmers but rather to examine how income has
evolved over time.
We apply the Hodrick-Prescott filter to several time series to compare developments in the
cyclical components over time. For agricultural income and economic cycles, we find no clear
correlations. This is partly due to agricultural incomes being subject to extensive support
schemes and market regulations. Furthermore, we identify a positive relationship between
agricultural incomes and agricultural production. This aligns with our assumptions, as a
portion of the income is directly tied to production. We also demonstrate that fluctuations
between incomes and subsidies often exhibit close covariance, although not universally. The
inconsistency stems from excessive subsidies leading to overproduction and subsequently
reduced income, and due to subsidies serving multiple purposes.
Our findings reveal a growing divergence between NIBIO’s and our modified account over
time, but also demonstrates the independence of income from broader economic fluctuations.
Thanks to strong support systems and favorable market regulations for agriculture, incomes
remain relatively insulated from economic cycles and, to some extent, also production
fluctuations. Nevertheless, production will still have a certain correlation with incomes, as a
portion of the earnings is directly linked to the sale of goods.nhhma
The Mediating Effect of Innovation on the Relationship Between Gender Diversity and Financial Performance : Empirical evidence from listed Nordic companies in 2000-2022
This paper explores the intricate relationship between boardroom gender diversity and firm
performance. Aiming to establish a causal pattern of how female board members could affect
firm performance, we propose innovation as a possible mediator.
We define gender diversity as the female share on boards and cover financial performance
from both accounting (ROA & ROE) and market (market-to-book ratio, Tobin’s Q)
perspectives. Using R&D expenditures and patent applications as proxies for innovation,
alongside other control variables, we conduct step-by-step mediation analysis on an
unbalanced panel of 867 listed companies in Sweden, Norway, Finland, or Denmark from
2000 to 2022. We also use difference-in-differences (DiD) regressions, focusing on the 2008
board gender quota in Norway as an alternative approach when relevant.
The mediation analysis using pooled OLS and panel regressions discovers no effect of
diversity on market performance and no positive effect on accounting returns, which disappear
when firm-fixed effects are added. The effect of diversity on innovation varies from negative
to positive, depending on the model specifications. Innovation is associated with improved
market performance and negative or no effect on accounting returns, depending on the fixed
effects used. Innovation (R&D spending) is recognized to mediate the relationship between
gender diversity and performance (ROA or ROE) in a few specific setups, but generally,
evidence for innovation as a mediator is weak.
Alternatively, the DiD regressions show some evidence of linking the quota and, thus, gender
diversity to negative effects on ROA and market to book ratio and positive on R&D spending.nhhma
Fungerte regjeringens ‘one size fits all’– tilnærming for økonomisk støtte under pandemien?
under pandemien.
avgjørende faktor for konkurs.
for ulike virksomhetstyper.
konkursrisikoen mer for små enn for store selskaper.nhhma
