    Get PDF
The more noticeable consequences of climate change have led to increased attention on how climate risk affects financial investments. Through a portfolio study, this master’s thesis examines the relationship between carbon emissions and stock returns for companies listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange and Stockholm Stock Exchange from 2015 to 2023. Two equally weighted portfolios are constructed based on companies’ total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and rebalanced annually to capture changes in emission intensity. The Green portfolio consists of the 33% of companies with the lowest emissions, while the Brown portfolio includes the 33% with the highest emissions. A difference portfolio is created for direct analysis of return differences between the Green and Brown portfolios. Both descriptive and regression analyses show that the Green portfolio achieved higher risk-adjusted returns than the Brown portfolio. Regression results indicate that an investment strategy with a long position in the Green portfolio and a short position in the Brown portfolio generated an annual abnormal return between 0.16% and 0.18%. Overall, the study’s findings suggest that companies with low carbon footprints performed better than those with high carbon footprints during the analysed period when adjusting for risk. The findings indicate either a temporary market mispricing or that traditional financial models do not fully account for climate risk. The study leans toward the latter, highlighting a potential need to integrate sustainability factors into investment models. The results suggest that investors have an economic incentive to channel capital toward greener companies, which could accelerate the transition to a more sustainable economy. In conclusion, the thesis finds that financial incentives and sustainability goals can be aligned

Market Timing and Capital Structure in the Nordic Markets

This thesis investigates capital structures and the prevalence of market timing among publicly listed firms in the Nordic markets from 1995 to 2023. Building on Baker and Wurgler’s seminal 2002 study, Market Timing and Capital Structure, we explore how market timing behavior affects leverage across three dimensions: short-term shifts, crosssectional levels, and long-term persistence. Our findings indicate that, while equity financing is a common funding method in the Nordics, evidence of market timing behavior is limited to modest and sporadic short-term impacts. Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that historical market timing behavior significantly influences cross-sectional leverage or has a meaningful long-term impact

    Bonusprogrammer i norsk innenriks luftfart

This study focuses on the repeal of the bonus ban in Norwegian domestic aviation in 2013, a significant regulatory change that impacted market competition. The bonus ban, introduced in 2002, was intended to promote competition by preventing SAS from leveraging its loyalty program to dominate the market. The repeal was partially driven by pressure from the EFTA Surveillance Authority (ESA), but it faced skepticism from the Norwegian Competition Authority, which feared negative effects such as higher prices and reduced competition. The purpose of this study is to examine how the repeal of the bonus ban affected competition, with a particular focus on SAS. We analyze the role of loyalty programs in shaping competition through mechanisms such as the lock-in effect, reduced price sensitivity, and increased customer loyalty. The study employs a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) methodology to identify the effects of the repeal by comparing developments in Norway (treatment group) with Sweden (control group). The dataset includes information on ticket prices, estimated passenger numbers, and ticket classes for the period 2010 to 2019, with SAS being the primary focus due to the lack of data on Norwegian Air Shuttle. The results indicate that the repeal of the bonus ban led to an increase in overall average ticket prices, primarily due to a shift in passenger composition. Although we anticipated a price increase in the business segment due to lock-in effects, the analysis reveals a relative price decrease in both the business and economy segments. Simultaneously, the repeal had a positive effect on passenger numbers, particularly in the business segment, where loyalty programs exert the strongest influence according to theory. This study provides insights into how regulatory changes and loyalty programs impact competition in Norwegian domestic aviation. It highlights how loyalty programs can offer market advantages to established players while also questioning whether their effects are substantial enough to influence the market as a whole. This contributes valuable knowledge to the understanding of competition in regulated markets

Timing and Targets of Share Buybacks: When Do Firms Execute and What Are They Aiming For?

Share repurchases are a widely recognized payout policy, offering firms a flexible alternative to traditional dividends. While substantial research has explored the abnormal returns associated with buybacks, the timing of share repurchases remains underexamined. This thesis investigates when publicly listed firms execute share repurchases in the open market, focusing on the Norwegian market—a relatively unexplored area, possibly due to market size and data limitations. The objective of this study is to determine whether the timing of share repurchases is random or influenced by specific factors. Through hypothesis testing, we find that repurchase timing is non-random, with several publicly available metrics significantly affecting the timing of share repurchases. Notably, smaller firms tend to reduce buyback activity following negative trading volume trends. This has intensified since the implementation of the European Market Abuse Regulations, which imposed limitations on daily buyback volume. Seasonality is also a notable factor, where more frequent repurchase activity is centered around the first and last quarter. Additionally, we observe increased repurchase activity prior to earnings announcements and identify valuation metrics, such as the price-to-book (P/B) ratio, as key determinants of timing. Short-term volatility and overall market sentiment also significantly affect the likelihood of repurchases. These findings suggest that firms strategically time share repurchases to enhance shareholder value.Share repurchases are a widely recognized payout policy, offering firms a flexible alternative to traditional dividends.

This master´s thesis investigates how Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting influences profitability in Norwegian firms, with a particular emphasis on differences between small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large companies. While ESG has attracted significant international attention, research often lacks contextual considerations relevant to Norwegian firms. To address this gap, the study examines how sustainability measures affect profitability and market value, utilizing ESG scores from the Bloomberg database and employing ROA and Tobin's Q as performance measures. Applying quantitative methods, the study reveals a general positive relationship between ESG reporting on both profitability and market value. However, the effects vary significantly based on company size and industry affiliation. The analysis identifies a significant positive interaction between ESG reporting and large companies for market value, measured by Tobin’s Q. This finding may reflect increased trust and interest among investors. In contrast, for profitability (ROA), the interaction for large companies is negative but not statistically significant, suggesting that ESG reporting may impose short-term costs without immediate gains in profitability, Industry-specific effects are mostly insignificant, with a few exceptions where ESG reporting plays a more prominent role. These findings suggest that while ESG reporting can contribute to long-term value creation, it requires careful adaptation to company size and industry context. Through additional tests and robustness analyses, the study enhances the credibility, validity, and reliability of its results. The insights provided are valuable to companies, investors, and policymakers, illustrating that ESG reporting can not only improve financial performance but also boost market value. Thus, ESG reporting is highlighted as a strategic tool for promoting sustainable growth and securing long-term competitive advantages in the Norwegian business landscape

    Svingprisingens rolle i fondsforvaltning

This master's thesis explores swing pricing, a method used to manage transaction costs in funds. The purpose of this method is to ensure that existing unitholders are not adversely affected by new subscriptions or redemptions. It requires that investors who generate costs for the fund, by necessitating adjustments to the portfolio, also bear those costs. This study examines these costs, known as the swing factor, with the aim of increasing understanding and analyzing the role of swing pricing in fund management. The study analyzes factors influencing the swing factor through two main hypotheses and related sub-hypotheses for two of KLP's index-based equity funds: KLP AksjeGlobal Indeks and KLP AksjeFremvoksende Indeks. The first analysis investigates how macroeconomic factors influence swing factor adjustments in the funds. The second analysis assesses whether the difference between KLP's swing factor and a calculated swing factor, based on direct transaction costs, is affected by macroeconomic factors, with a focus on variations between ordinary and extraordinary markets. The methodologies employed include generalized linear models and multiple regression analyses, with results discussed in the context of relevant theories and literature on swing pricing and cost sensitivity in fund management. Our findings show that swing factor adjustments in KLP AksjeGlobal Indeks and KLP AksjeFremvoksende Indeks are primarily driven by historical trends rather than macroeconomic factors. A key finding is the high degree of stability ("stickiness") of the swing factor, which leads to infrequent adjustments. Furthermore, results from the second analysis indicate that macroeconomic factors, such as economic and political uncertainty indices and the fear index, influence the difference between KLP's swing factor and the calculated swing factor. The findings suggest that the effects vary depending on whether markets are ordinary or extraordinary and whether the fund operates in developed or emerging markets. As such, the results do not support a general hypothesis without considering fund-specific characteristics

Joint Forecasting of Salmon Lice and Treatment Interventions in Aquaculture Operations

    Get PDF
The need for joint forecasting of parasitic lice and associated preventative treatments stems from large monetary losses associated with such treatments, and the distribution of potential future treatments can be used in operational planning to hedge their associated risk. We present a spatio-temporal forecasting model that accounts for the joint dynamics between lice and treatments where spatial interaction between sites is derived from hydrodynamic transportation patterns. The model-derived forecasting distributions exhibit large heterogeneity between sites at significant levels of exposure which suggests the forecasting model can provide great value in assisting operational risk management

European Grid Development Modeling and Analysis: Established Frameworks, Research Trends, and Future Opportunities

    Get PDF
This paper presents a comprehensive survey of recent literature on European energy system modeling and analysis with special focus on grid development. Spanning the years from 2013 to 2023, we analyze 59 selected articles, organizing them by geographical scope, grid expansion strategies, research focus, and methodology. Additionally, we provide an overview of established and recurring frameworks, including ELMOD, EMPIRE, AnyMOD, LIMES, TIMES, FlexPlan, PyPSA, REMix, and Balmorel. Further, we elaborate on the recent trends in research and modeling. Based on our observations, we propose avenues for future research. For instance, considering recent changes in the geopolitical environment, we suggest shifting the geographical research focus from the North Sea region to the Central and Eastern European regions. Other suggestions include investigating grid development under imperfect market competition, merging the study of grid development with sector coupling, and increasing the focus on blue hydrogen, which appear to not receive much focus, as opposed to green hydrogen. Overall, this work may serve as a useful resource for newcomers to grid-related research and a practical guide for seasoned researchers in the field
