Is the secrecy of the parametric configuration of slot machines rationally justified? The exposure of the mathematical facts of games of chance as an ethical obligation

    No full text
Slot machines gained a high popularity despite a specific element that could limit their appeal: non-transparency with respect to mathematical parameters. The PAR sheets, exposing the parameters of the design of slot machines and probabilities associated with the winning combinations are kept secret by game producers, and the lack of data regarding the configuration of a machine prevents people from computing probabilities and other mathematical indicators. In this article, I argue that there is no rational justification for this secrecy by giving two reasons, one psychological and the other mathematical. For the latter, I show that mathematics provides us with some statistical methods of retrieving the missing data, which are essential for the numerical probability computations in slots. The slots case raises the problem of the exposure of the parametric configuration and mathematical facts of any game of chance as an ethical obligation

Global Evolution of Research in urban environment and human health: A Bibliometric Study

    No full text
Most nations are experiencing rapid urbanization. By 2050, it is estimated that almost 70% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. Building green cities, smart cities, or more sustainable cities is the top priority policies for many countries, which requires a more advanced understanding of the urban’s ecological and social systems. This study aims to examine the growth trajectory, most influential documents, intellectual and conceptual structure of the literature regarding urban environment and human health research. Bibliometric analysis was performed using 424 validated scientific works related to the topic published during 1997- 2023. The review showed that this field’s knowledge grew exponentially during the last two decades. For example, the five most frequently used keywords found are “urban” (63 occurrences), “health” (47 occurrences), “impact” (44 occurrences), “urban population” (40 occurrences), “mortality” (36 occurrences), while the number of publication increased from 3 in 1990 to 58 in 2018. The majority of them are contributed by scholars from the world’s developed countries or large economies such as the United States (92 documents), China (70 documents), England (39 documents), and Germany (25 documents). We reasoned that scientific culture, research spending, and collaboration are the main causes of the growth in knowledge and disparity in scientific productivity among institutes and/or nations. In addition, based on the co-citation analysis, three major research lines were identified. The findings of this study offer many key implications for devising the urban policies that further promote knowledge creation and sharing while closing gaps in academic publishing in the long run

ABSTRACT Flight punctuality is an important indicator in assessing the quality of an airline’s service. Flight punctuality reflects operational efficiency and has a direct impact on passenger satisfaction levels. This study aims to determine how much influence flight punctuality has on passenger satisfaction of Malaysia Airlines at Juanda International Airport Surabaya. This study uses a quantitative method approach. Data collection techniques are carried out by distributing questionnaires to a number of respondents selected using random sampling techniques. The data collected were analyzed using simple linear regression, partial test (t) and coefficient of determination. Based on the results of the partial test (t), the calculated t value > t table is 11,166 > 1,984 so that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This shows that there is a significant influence between flight punctuality (X) and passenger satisfaction (Y). in addition, the results of the determination coefficient test show an R square (R2) value of 0,560, which means that flight punctuality has a 56.0% effect on passenger satisfaction, while the remaining 44.0% is influenced by other factors outside flight punctuality. Keywords: Flight punctuality, Passenger satisfaction, Malaysia Airline

The modern aviation industry is the backbone of global mobility, yet it faces significant challenges from passenger surges, particularly during peak periods such as Christmas and New Year. This study aims to analyze the operational readiness of Adi Soemarmo Airport in Boyolali for the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year period. The research focuses on identifying strategies and implementing readiness in the areas of Human Resources (HR), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Infrastructure and Facilities, based on projected passenger growth and aircraft movements. This study uses a qualitative approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews with the Airport Operations Control Head (AOCH) and Apron Movement Control (AMC) Supervisor, direct field observations, and documenting Adi Soemarmo Airport's operational plans.  The research results show that Adi Soemarmo Airport has made various proactive preparations for the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year holidays. In terms of human resources, readiness is demonstrated by the optimization of shift schedules, the addition of BKO personnel, and refresher training. In terms of standard operating procedures (SOPs), the airport has procedures for handling passenger surges and emergency situations, which are continuously evaluated and disseminated. Meanwhile, infrastructure and facility readiness includes optimizing the use of check-in counters, expanding waiting rooms, and managing passenger flow. However, challenges such as passenger discipline in adhering to check-in times and the effectiveness of optimizing facility capacity during peak traffic still require further attention. This study concludes that Adi Soemarmo Airport has a strong foundation for preparedness, but continued improvement in implementation details and cross-sector coordination is crucial

This study aims to analyze the workload of information service officers at Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) based on the Manual of Standards (MOS). The research is motivated by the observation that only one officer per shift handles all information-related tasks, which contradicts MOS guidelines requiring a minimum of two officers for airports with fewer than 60 daily flights. The method used is a mixed-method approach combining qualitative and quantitative techniques, including NASA-TLX (Task Load Index) to measure mental workload, along with observations, interviews, and document analysis. Results indicate that the average NASA-TLX score exceeds 80, categorizing the workload as high. The study reveals that excessive multitasking leads to a decline in service quality, increased risk of human error, and potential stress-related issues among personnel. Errors in information dissemination were observed, including incorrect boarding announcements caused by overburdened staff. As a solution, the implementation of a Silent Airport system and better digital information infrastructure is proposed to reduce workload and improve service quality. The study emphasizes the urgency of aligning staffing levels with MOS standards to ensure passenger safety, service efficiency, and institutional compliance

    What is rich?

***PLEASE USE THIS PRE-REGISTRATION INSTEAD OF “Prototype Study”, WHERE MISTAKES WHERE FOUND PRIOR TO THE DATA COLLECTION**** In a previous Study we asked participants openly (and exploratory) which strategies they use to estimate an income that is needed to be considered as being rich. We found a considerable proportion of the participants answered that they use social prototypes (such as professors or doctors) from which they derive their answer. Furthermore, we observed that the social circle of participants is a crucial factor to make such estimations. In this Study, we therefore aim to answer three research questions (RQ): RQ1: Is the discourse with the social circle determining (social) prototypes about “the rich”? (Rateau et al. 2012) RQ2: Does the salience of poor and rich people in people’s social circle affect wealth estimations? (Galesic et al. 2018) RQ3: Does the prototype about “the rich” affect wealth estimations (= the estimation of an income that is needed to be rich)? (Duesenberry, 1949) To do so, we use a manipulation of mediator design (experimental causal chain design) with two studies to be able to make causal statements to answer the RQs. In Study 1, we try to answer RQ1 and RQ2. We will manipulate the salience of poor versus rich members of participant’s social circles and measure a. participant’s estimations of an income that is needed to be rich and b. the degree of agreement of six statements about properties of wealthy people. These statements are derived from a previous Study. N = 200 answered these questions on a scale from 1 (not at all) to 7 (very) with M = 3.64, SD = 1.64 (in the middle of the scale to avoid floor or ceiling effects when participants are asked to answer this questions). One example item is: “ If the person buys many (for others senseless) things, it is a sign that s/he is rich.” The hypotheses are grounded on basis from findings of a previous study, which showed that when the difference about the income of a person and the income of the social is high (compared to low; indicating that a participant has less money than the social circle), participants indicate that more (compared to less) money is needed to be rich. However, it is assumed that when a rich person from the social circle (who one knows) is salient, the mental representation of rich persons is not as fuzzy compared to when a poor person of the social circle is salient. From this follows that: Hypothesis 1a: The salience of rich (compared to poor) people in the social circle of the participants leads to higher (compared to lower) wealth estimations. Hypothesis 1b: The salience of rich (compared to poor) people in the social circle of the participants leads to lower (compared to higher) agreement to statements about how wealthy people look like. In Study 2, we try to answer RQ3. We try to manipulate the peripheral components of the social prototype of the participants about “the rich” and measure participants’ estimations of what income is needed to be rich. To do so, we ask participants to think about a person with whom they do not interact with as often. Afterwards, participants are asked to imagine that they will chat (SMS chat to influence the social shared prototype) with that person. In this chat, the person from the social circle shares her/his opinion about rich people and participants will be asked to answer on these statements how they see wealthy people (openly). These opinions are statements about how wealthy people look like (the same statements as used in Study 1). The independent variable is that the person from the social circle has the belief that the person is super rich or that the person is “just” rich. For example, the person from the social circle says in the “super rich condition” the following: “It is very easy for me to tell that someone is immeasurably rich (vs. just about wealthy), when I see a person who buys many (e.g. senseless to others) things.” Thus, in the “super rich” (vs. the “just rich”) condition, participants will assume that the person from their social circles thinks that it does not need so much to be recognized as being rich (the threshold to recognize someone as being rich, is low in the “super rich” condition). Hypothesis 2: In the super rich (compared to the “just rich”) condition participants will indicate that a lower (compared to higher) amount of money is needed to be rich. Since we try to manipulate cognitive processes (e.g. participants are asked to retrieve persons from their social circle from their memory) we will check whether other, relatively stable characteristics (such as sex, age, education or the income of the participants), do have an influence in the hypothesized mechanisms. We hypothesize that: Hypothesis 3: The effects described in Hypothesis 1a, 1b and 2 are stable after controlling for sex, age, education and personal income of the participants

Development and Internal Validation of Multivariable Prediction Models of Small Molecule Drug Approval based on Physicochemical Parameters

    No full text
Predicting drug approval could be valuable in reducing attrition during drug development. Several attempts have been made to develop prediction models of regulatory approval or clinical development on the basis of a range of predictors. However, these models have not included detailed information related to the physicochemical parameters of the compounds, which could be informative and which have been the basis of many extremely influential attempts to distinguish potential drugs from other chemicals. In this project, we will develop and internally validate a prediction model based on comparison of approved small molecule drugs (‘drugs’) with drugs that entered clinical development but were discontinued. Predictors are physicochemical parameters commonly considered in assessments of ‘drug-likeness’
