Comparative analysis of the economic policy response to COVID-19 in the EU-27 and Republic of Serbia

    Get PDF
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, a wide range of short-term fiscal, monetary and macroprudential measures have been implemented. The aim of this research is to compare the effects of the package of economic measures implemented in the EU-27 countries and the Republic of Serbia in 2020 according to several criteria, starting from factors which had the impact on the amount of economic aid package to assessing short-term effects on economic activity, labour market and public debt. The results of the research showed that the financial value of the economic aid package in 2020 reflects, above all, the economic capacity and relative wealth of the country, rather than the depth of the crisis that the countries faced. A positive interdependence was found between the financial amount of the economic measures package and the amount of public debt as a percentage of GDP, while a negative interdependence was found between the change in unemployment rate and the volume of economic package aid as a share of GDP. Based on the available data, it is still not possible to determine the positive statistical impact of the economic package aid on economic growth. Such findings are also expected because the measures were primarily tailored to preserve the liquidity of the economy and employment. Besides, a certain period of time is needed for the measures to take effect, which may explain the discrepancy between the amount of aid and the depth of economic activity in 2020. The data showed that the Serbian economy, unlike the Eurozone, recorded moderate debt growth and adequate capitalized banking sector is resistant to credit risk growth

The Prospects of Food Sovereignity in the Former Yugoslav Republics

    Get PDF
The neoliberal approach taken to the transition from socialism to capitalism in the six former Yugoslav republics has revealed its weaknesses in all spheres of economic activities, including food production. These countries have lost sovereignty with respect to regulating important national policy areas like food trade and production. Liberalisation of the food trade has adversely affected national economies by destroying many small-scale farmers and food producers. Corporate supermarkets have been taking over an ever bigger slice of the retail pie. Social movements are calling for direct democratic control over resources and food production to be regained. The article examines the prospects of these countries to overcome the increasing food insecurity by introducing food sovereignty

    No full text

    Get PDF
Marriage is a socially acceptable institution in which biological and socio-cultural components interact. One of the most important features of marriage is seasonality because different factors affect the time of entering into marriage, which is the primary subject of this research, analyzed on the example of the settlement Sremska Mitrovica. In agrarian societies, natural conditions were mostly between key factors that influenced the date of entering into marriage. Religion was often the deciding factor of seasonal marriage because of the limitation of dates in which it was allowed, because of religious holidays and periods that were preceded by religious holidays. The goal of this research is to highlight and notice specific trends, marital norms and patterns, the seasonality of marriage as well as to connect those changes with historical, political, economical, cultural and social contexts. Data were obtained from marriage registers (1900-2011) in Sremska Mitrovica. The characteristics of marriage in Sremska Mitrovica in the period from 1900 to 2011 were changing under the influence of historical and demographic heritage as well as the factors mentioned which also affected the seasonality of marriage in this period. In the observed period of 112 years, the highest percentage of marriages are made during autumn, in November

The role of the state in the 21st century

Due to geopolitical changes in the world, thinking primarily of the relationship between the USA and China, intensive changes in the domain of information technologies, which have led to changes in the way of work and life, the question of the role of the nation state in that context is justified. Today, the state and society are facing the putting of traditional values into a new concept, in which the notion of freedom and democracy is more widely observed. Properly understood democratic values should prevent the human rights and freedoms of all citizens from being endangered. What is characteristic of each state is the importance of its institutions, which can be formal or informal. While formal institutions can change almost "instantly", an example of this is a change in the law "overnight", informal ones are slowly changing, such as customs or religious beliefs. The question is whether the welfare state still has the significance that it had before in one society? It is known that the welfare state has been in crisis for a long time, that many of its characteristics have been called into question. Today, in addition to the nation-state and its institutions, other social actors are emerging, such as non-governmental organizations. Then, the relationship between the state and the market is quite complicated today, and the most important issue in that relationship is the economic freedoms of market actors. Depending on their percentage, it is determined which political and economic system will prevail in one country

The modern age and a sense of presence

In this paper, the idea of human existence is related to current issues of identities within a complex, technologically globalized modern world. Kierkegaard’s discourse seems very useful in this regard, because of its vivid narrative about obstacles arrising from the superficial offerings of freedom and knowledge that essentially supress the individual’s inner development. By conceptualizing existence and reason as polarities of human experience, it is not possible to implement the existential immediacy of the relationship between knowable structure of Being and the living issues of human beings. That is why, I sugest, their relating, which emerges from the qualitative nature of the state of presence - simultaneously belonging to individual’s interiority and to the external world - is of great importance

Radnopravne implikacije IV industrijske revolucije i digitalizacije rada - izazovi normiranja i perspektive razvoja

Koncept orijentisan na čoveka-radnika u smislu holističkog i integrativnog pristupa predmetu istraživanja treba da rezultira utvrđivanjem osnovnih pravnih pretpostavki regulatornog i normativnog okvira novih formi rada

Resetting the Left in Europe: Challenges, attempts and obstacles

    Get PDF
Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Europe is struggling with itself. Inequalities are growing, nationalism is increasing, and populism is exploding. New emerging political movements, if these exist at all, are predominantly arising from the (populist) right, despite the fact that the majority of people in need belong to traditionally left constituencies. But instead of embracing these people, the Left is struggling too: with the wrong paths of the Third way it opted to take during the 1990s, with the consequences of globalization, and – most of all – with detaching itself from the dominating capitalistic economic order and offering a sustainable economic, political and social alternative. This volume sheds light on the theoretical and political challenges that the Left has faced over the past three decades, looks at attempts at and hopes for new beginnings, and outlines the challenges and prospects encountered on the road to a recovery. And, among the many conclusions we can draw, one certainly cannot be dismissed: the overlapping of the crises that both Europe and the Left are facing is not a coincidence, but moreover a sign that the decline of Europe is closely linked to the decline of the Left. Consequently, neither Europe nor the Left will be able to reconsolidate themselves without one another
