    TRADITION AND GENDER

    No full text
Tradition and Gender: A story about rhythm, symbols and women. This presentation is about Candombe cultural experience in Uruguay from a female perspective. The content comes from the research done during the past year and the interaction and conversations with women that have been raised and are part of the core of Candombe tradition. I explored Global Jazz concepts and put them in dialogue with the influences and inspiration I got from this tradition. There is a difference that must be pointed out: within being a woman it is not the same to be latina, indigenous, black or white, afro latina, etc. Because I want to address the difference I wrote this music and try to evoke the sense of unity rather than division. A call to make ourselves strong coming together.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-global-jazz/1162/thumbnail.jp

    The Black Strings

The goal of this paper is to demonstrate my findings on the newest violin techniques we can observe in contemporary music. Ever since I was a child, I wondered why the violin wasn\u27t so prominent in the contemporary music scene. It is also to demonstrate the evolution of my musician and artist persona here at Berklee, since it was here where I truly changed from a musician into an Artist. Here, I will discuss my story and why I am the musician I am today. The first kind of methodology I plan to use for my CE project is performative, or practice based research. The second methodology, was to conduct historical musicological research. I plan to record data, and also compose at least one or two songs that might implement some of the concepts I have learned through the historical research and practice of concepts. The violin has always been seen as a very Avante-Garde and difficult instrument to master in both the classical and jazz genres In this paper you will also read about some of the extreme musical influences that have influenced me growing up, and as well as my sound.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1284/thumbnail.jp

    Sex, Lies, and Butterflies

    • Sex, Lies, and Butterflies - draft of a Musical, including 27 song ideas, 14 scores with musical demos, and a 121 page libretto. Inspired by true events that occurred to Marianna Trevino-Wright, starting in 2017, this musical features Lucinda, the director of a Butterfly Preserve on the Rio Grande. This is her dream job, until the preserve turns into ground zero for the Border Wall. To keep the preserve intact, she goes through her own metamorphosis, becoming a true pioneer at fighting new kinds of dangerous right wing forces, both inside and outside the government, and is whisked into a life of activism. In reality, these forces included conspiracy theorists and right-wing elements, which managed to close the facility for a time due to their threatening tactics. The music is influenced by Country Western, Tejano, Rhythm and Blues, and other genre found at the southern border with Mexico.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1008/thumbnail.jp

    Love//Loss

This project aims to be a narrative-based method of promoting connection among the campus community, in the form of a live musical/concert production; a story reflective of the struggles and hardships of the student body in order to foster greater camaraderie within it. This desire comes from the producer’s own struggles towards the academic, and it is the hope that this authenticity may serve as a bridge to increase interactivity between audience and performers/producers. This is accomplished primarily through the poignant storyline, and is supported by a survey meant to provide visuals allowing the audience to proverbially see themselves - their responses - in the show. Coupled with the collaborative approach to the project between producers and artist, as well as a willingness to embrace autobiographical elements to the story, and what results is a powerful, tightly run performance. Though certain aspects of the visuals remained unused in the final performance, and challenges arose in the survey responses, much was learned about the role of a well-thought out emotional end-goal in making an effective production. Future works by the producers hope to expand on these aspects in order to produce more effective stories that contribute to increasingly stimulating audience-performer relationships.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1024/thumbnail.jp

self_doubt is a multi-disciplinary exhibition that confronts the audience with the idea of considering self-doubting not as a negative psychological consumption, but as a process to talk deeply to oneself and to understand oneself.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1028/thumbnail.jp

Bridging Traditional and Commercial Worlds and Music Together in the Music Theory Classroom

    Get PDF
This presentation will focus on several elements of teaching music theory to both traditional and commercial students. Focus will be placed on creative and pedagogically sound assessments, implementation of play and musical experiences, and how to use backwards design to make meaningful learning objectives for musicianship courses. Through my own journey as a classically trained opera singer and music theorist to my current position in Nashville where I interact with commercial writers, producers, and performers on a daily basis, I have developed a true appreciation on how to effectively blend these populations in a meaningful musicianship learning experience.https://remix.berklee.edu/pac/1010/thumbnail.jp

    The Rhythm as a Resource

    No full text
This project aims to demonstrate how powerful rhythm can be when used as a resource to create new ideas, specifically through the analysis and application of rhythmic cells from traditional music in a contemporary music context. It explores how to use resources from the past to inspire and create ideas for the future. It is important to note that being inspired by traditional music doesn’t mean the composition will take a world music direction; it is just a rhythmic cell, a resource. To demonstrate this concept, I produced an album where each song was composed using a method I created to utilize rhythmic cells. I will explain each step of this method in detail, analyzing the creative process. During the process, it was challenging to manage the production time. I decided to record all the instrumentation by myself except for strings and vocals and also took care of the mixing process. Although this has been complex, it has helped me improve several aspects of the production process. This material is designed for every musician to expand their perspective on the composition and arrangement process. It is hoped that my work will inspire our community.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1276/thumbnail.jp

    Nice Questions and Bad Advice

    No full text
This project is a six-song EP called Nice Questions and Bad Advice, with related promotional materials (cover art, videos, and so on). The EP is essentially a solo project: I wrote all but one song, I produced all six songs, and I performed practically every instrument. The EP also represents a departure from how I’ve created music: these are the first lyrically complete songs I’ve ever created, and they’re produced almost exclusively with real, acoustic instruments (I used to identify as an electronic music producer). The EP deals obliquely with my previous career as a lawyer, and its central message is the power of music to heal: to turn experiences that are ugly and unrelatable into an experience that’s beautiful and relatable. Lyrically, the EP deals with cycles, music as such, mortality, looking back, concealment, and absurdity. Musically, the EP includes unusual song forms, odd phrase lengths, odd meters, non-diatonic harmony, and unusual production. In addition to honing my lyricism and songwriting, throughout the creation of this EP I learned about co-writing, vocal and drum production, and studio recording. A written reflection offers more detail. I intend to release the EP publicly by December 2024.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1059/thumbnail.jp
