Systematic Review of Music Therapy and Musical Interventions for Patients with Moderate and Severe Mental Disorders
No full textObjective: This systematic review aims to assess the impact of music therapy and musical interventions on neuropsychiatric outcomes among patients with moderate and severe mental disorders, in comparison with conventional treatment in isolation. Methods: The review follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted on November 16, 2021, using the following databases and search interfaces: Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Embase, SCOPUS, Web of Science; PubMed, PsycINFO, Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, and Scientific Electronic Library Online. Two authors independently assessed the studies for inclusion criteria, extracted the data, and evaluated the quality of the included studies using critical appraisal tools. Results: In total, 17 studies were included, 9 of which were randomized controlled trials. The experimental studies involved 5,082 adult and elderly patients. The most prevalent symptoms assessed in the studies were anxiety, depression, and positive and negative symptoms of psychotic disorders. Music interventions were predominantly conducted by music therapists and nurses, providing passive interventions with the selection of musical repertoire by therapists and patients. The frequency with which musical interventions occurred varied greatly in terms of session duration, number of times per week, and number of times during the day. The identified study designs included clinical and quasi-experimental studies. In terms of methodological quality, clinical studies showed weaknesses regarding deviations from intended interventions. Conclusion: The effectiveness of music therapy and musical interventions for neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with moderate and severe mental disorders was evident in quasi-experimental and clinical studies with satisfactory methodological quality. Musical interventions, in various forms of application, represent an interdisciplinary therapeutic tool that complements and enhances conventional treatment. Unlike conventional treatments, the immersive and integrative nature of music interventions allows access to both intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions during periods of psychic suffering. These findings highlight the importance of researchers addressing methodological limitations, such as deviations from intended interventions, and advocate for the expansion the use of music in community treatment settings
Timing Matters: Applying Musicians’ Insights to Business
Get PDFTiming, a critical aspect in social contexts and human cognition, has been extensively studied across diverse fields, such as biology, neuroscience, and business. However, there is a lack of interdisciplinary approaches that offer fresh perspectives on how timing works. Music performance, being inherently temporal in nature, presents a unique opportunity to bridge this gap and explore timing mechanisms in a multifaceted context. This research explores how professional musicians understand and utilize timing in their training and artistic development, and how these insights can be applied to business contexts, bridging the two fields to understand timing more comprehensively. Through a qualitative approach based on interpretative phenomenological analysis methodology, eight professional contemporary musicians from around the world shared how they make sense of timing. The findings indicate that musicians perceive timing as a vital, complex concept that requires very specific listening skills and metacognition. The process of mastering timing is extremely challenging, yet rewarding. Moreover, timing is seen as an elastic concept that transcends chronological characteristics and one can create conditions to recognize good timing. The study also discusses how these findings can be translated into business settings, supported by current theories and literature, to inform leaders and managers about what it means to apply them to their business circumstances. In conclusion, this research opens new conversations and formulates new questions to draw insights on timing, which can be expanded further through new interdisciplinary approaches

What We All Feel
No full textThere is a feedback loop that has existed for thousands of years between the development of our hearing, our emotional indexes of responses to stimuli in our environment, our growing ability to craft our own worlds through this medium via music, and the technology we use to do so. This album is an homage to that process as a response to the current limitations of popular music, the boundaries of genre and the growing polarizations of the cultural contributors to each genre, and the Author’s own experience of being stuck in between many of those polarizations. In order to achieve an authentic result, the Author has re-structured their traditional process of making music, allowing the songs to grow organically.
Each song of this 6-track EP is inspired by a conversation between two or more students from different countries of origin. After this conversation, the Author organized and recorded jam sessions, then took the recordings and arranged them into a song based on the structure of both the song’s concept and the surrounding discussion. Lyrics were added that connected these overarching themes to the Author’s personal journey. The songs were then mixed, divided by interludes of snippets from those original conversations. No full textThis project is intended to explore the origins and roots, as well as the depths and limitations of the author’s creativity. The process of making it (which included gathering inspiration and developing the idea, composing, arranging, gathering and recording the material, then producing the EP and doing the post-production) was aimed to help the author find out more about themselves, while the end goal of creating it was an EP consisting of 5 songs whose intertwined narrative makes them inseparable. The idea behind the EP Here, Underwater came from the need to tell a story from the inside perspective, using harmony, sound design and experimentation as the main techniques for achieving that. Its importance is reflected in the catharsis that an artist can achieve after finishing such a deeply personal journey of exploration and translation of experiences and emotions into music. It uses the element of water as the main source of inspiration because of its importance throughout the author’s life. Life of a Yellow Kid: an audiovisual electro-pop LP
No full textThe basis of this project is to compose, record, produce and mix an eleven song album (LP) with a visualizer, logo and design for each track. The author designed all of the artworks for the songs and LP and produced videos and content for said LP. Also, the author combined all of his influences from electronic music and other genres to create something new to expand the limits of electronic music. This album was influenced by works of artists like Madeon, Porter Robinson, Louis The Child, Urboi, Medasin, Fred Again.. and The Weeknd. Song-writing, recording, sound design, creative production techniques, mixing, graphic design and audiovisual production were the skills and tools necessary for the completion of this LP. The main focus of the LP was to combine different genres of music, like Electro-pop, UK Garage, Pop, House and Drum and Bass. Also this album is about personal experiences of the author and it covers different feelings throughout the LP, creating a sunset literally and figuratively within the album.

No full textFor my culminating experience, I made an immersive journey into live production, developing and utilizing a range of technical skills. The show I created was inspired by personal experiences, focusing on themes of bravery and self-expression. I imagined a cage to be an inner fear in people’s hearts, a bird ultimately escapes, symbolizing liberation. For our installations, we built a square 5’x5’ frame with 1 ½” PVC tubes that served as the base structure for the ropes attached underneath the deck. Next, we utilized 1” rope to outline the shape of the cage, and we put sandbags to stabilize the PVC tube frame. Moreover, we used artificial grass and ivy garland to decorate the cage and the venue to enhance the scene’s realism. All the scenes were made in Unreal Engine, which I had just learned two weeks before. The advantage of using Unreal Engine is that it can provide realistic and cinematic looks for the scene. Overall, this project enhanced my understanding and capabilities in live production. Love//Loss takes the audience on a journey from Status Quo, the Realization of loss, to a state of Alone*. The audience reflects on their Losses while sharing in the togetherness of the community at BerkleeNYC. This exploration is venue- and community-specific: Love//Loss incorporates the student body\u27s stories, tragedies, and triumphs through interviews and surveys, turning that text and audio into data to drive visuals and memorials. This event is deeply personal to the intended audience. The entire world thrives from online platforms whether it\u27s for entertainment, work, or just socializing. The purpose of this EP is to create a genre of internet music people can relate to with the dominance of the internet. Simultaneously Jon has been a hip hop artist primarily inspired by artists such as Juice WRLD. This body of work is used to demonstrate a transitional period for his artist project from hip hop to something completely different and new including 3 singles to help his transition into his new sound. This project demonstrates not only the growth of Jon as an artist but his interest in mending internet culture into something more meaningful in a musical body of work.
