    Exploring the Usability and Feasibility of a Mobile Music Listening Application for People Living in the Community With Post-stroke Aphasia

    PURPOSE: Language and communication disorders can inhibit participation in activities that have potential therapeutic benefits for recovery. This exploratory research examined the usability and feasibility of a purpose-built music listening mobile application for people living in the community with post-stroke aphasia, and examined relationships between useability and participant age, aphasia severity and time post-stroke. METHODS: Nineteen participants with chronic aphasia tested the application for two weeks. Prior to use, music preferences, technology use and confidence, self-efficacy and music engagement questionnaires were completed. System usability scale, music listening data and a satisfaction rating were completed following use. RESULTS: Overall, the application was perceived as being usable and feasible with a high system usability rating and moderate effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. The system usability scores were not associated with aphasia severity, age, years post-stroke, self-efficacy or music engagement. Technology confidence was positively associated with system usability. CONCLUSION: The music listening application is a feasible and usable option for listening to music in people with chronic post-stroke aphasia. This study provides a foundation for the rigorous examination of the usability of music listening technology for people with post-stroke aphasia and the potential investigation of use in acute care facilities and other clinical populations.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONMusic listening has potential therapeutic benefits for people with post-stroke aphasia.Applications for music listening require customisation to enable people with post-stroke aphasia opportunity to listen to their preferred music.Music listening applications that are perceived as usable and feasible by people with post-stroke aphasia may have potential application within rehabilitation and community settings

    The Impact of Different Music Genres on Pain Tolerance: Emphasizing the Significance of Individual Music Genre Preferences

    Music is a promising (adjunctive) treatment for both acute and chronic pain, reducing the need for pharmacological analgesics and their side effects. Yet, little is known about the effect of different types of music. Hence, we investigated the efficacy of five music genres (Urban, Electronic, Classical, Rock and Pop) on pain tolerance. In this parallel randomized experimental study, we conducted a cold pressor test in healthy volunteers (n = 548). The primary outcome was pain tolerance, measured in seconds. No objective (tolerance time) or subjective (pain intensity and unpleasantness) differences were found among the five genres. Multinomial logistic regression showed that overall genre preference positively influenced pain tolerance. In contrast, the music genres that participants thought would help for pain relief did not. Our study was the first to investigate pain tolerance at genre level and in the context of genre preference without self-selecting music. In conclusion, this study provides evidence that listening to a favored music genre has a significant positive influence on pain tolerance, irrespective of the kind of genre. Our results emphasize the importance of individual music (genre) preference when looking at the analgesic benefits of music. This should be considered when implementing music in the clinical setting

    Effect of Music Intervention on Perinatal Depressive Symptoms: A Meta-analysis

    BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effect of music intervention on perinatal depressive symptoms (PDS), especially the effectiveness of specific aspects of the intervention. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of music intervention and explore the role of different intervention features. METHODS: Six databases were searched from inception to May 21, 2024, to identify randomized controlled trials evaluating the effect of music intervention on PDS. The Cochrane Risk of Bias (RoB) 2.0 tool was used to assess RoB. RESULTS: The meta-analysis of 10 studies including 988 participants showed that music intervention significantly improved PDS (standardized mean difference (SMD): 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.91, -0.32), with statistical heterogeneity among the studies (I2 = 78%). Subgroup analysis showed significant effects on pregnant and postpartum women, and women with or without perinatal complications. Effects were also significant in low- and middle-income countries (SMD: 0.79, 95% CI: 1.16, -0.42), music medicine (SMD: 0.82, 95% CI: 1.17, -0.47), and total intervention length of less than 6 weeks (SMD: 0.85, 95% CI: 1.25, -0.45), but not in high-income countries, music therapy, or total intervention length of 6 weeks or more. Hospital intervention (SMD: 0.86, 95% CI: 1.41, -0.31) showed greater effects compared with home intervention and hospital combined with home intervention. Six studies had a high overall RoB and four had some concerns. CONCLUSIONS: Music intervention is effective in alleviating PDS. Interventions in low- and middle-income countries, music medicine, total intervention length of less than 6 weeks, and hospital intervention may be advisable

    The Effect of Music on Anxiety, Pain Levels, and Physiological Parameters in Women Undergoing Brachytherapy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    OBJECTIVES: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of music on anxiety, pain, and physiologic parameters in women undergoing brachytherapy. DATA SOURCES: The study was conducted with a randomized controlled design between June and December 2022. Music intervention was practiced to the patients in the experimental group (n = 30), while no practice was given to the control group (n = 25). In the study, the data were collected using the Descriptive Information Form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, visual analog scale, and vital signs (temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, SpO2) recording form. Intergroup and intragroup averages were evaluated by the mixed-design analysis of variance. Variables with pre-post intervention designs were evaluated with the one-way analysis of covariance. There was no significant difference in physiological parameters between the groups (P \u3e . 05). Although the mean anxiety scores decreased in the music group and increased in the control group, there was no statistically significant difference (P \u3e .05). A significant difference was found in the pain levels of the patients in repeated measurements made in intragroup evaluations (P \u3c .001). The depression mean of the music intervention group was significantly lower than the control group (P ≤ .05). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the music played during the brachytherapy process had positive effects on feeling less pain and management of depressive symptoms but did not affect anxiety and physiological parameters. Since each patient is different, the effects of music therapy can vary individually. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Nurses should apply different strategies to investigate session frequencies and durations for different patient groups and treatment stages in cancer care

    Sound and Alzheimer\u27s Disease-From Harmful Noise to Beneficial Soundscape Augmentation and Music Therapy

    Exposure to sound energy may be a risk factor or a therapeutic intervention for Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD). On one hand, noise has a harmful effect on people with AD by contributing to hearing loss, sleep disturbance, oxidative stress, inflammation, and excitotoxicity. But on the other hand, clinical trials and nursing home interventions with soundscape augmentation involving natural sounds have shown promising results in alleviating psychophysiological symptoms in people with AD. Music therapy, an emerging non-pharmacological treatment, can improve cognition, reduce anxiety and depression, and enhance self-awareness in patients with AD. To ensure that music does not become noise in clinical trials, only favorite music at levels safe for hearing should be used. From a public health standpoint, noise countermeasures, soundscape augmentation with natural sounds, and active or passive engagement with music may be regarded as potentially powerful strategies for the prevention of AD

    The Effectiveness of Music in Improving the Recovery of Cardiothoracic Surgery: A Systematic Review With Meta-analysis and Trial Sequential Analysis

    AIM: This study aimed to compile data on the effectiveness of music therapy for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. BACKGROUND: After cardiac and thoracic surgery, patients often experience physiological and psychological complications, such as anxiety, pain, stress, depression and changes in vital signs, which have a great impact on prognosis. METHODS: A systematic search of six databases was performed to identify randomized controlled trials investigating music therapy and cardiothoracic surgery. The data were extracted from the qualified research, the data without heterogeneity were analysed by random-effects model (REM) meta-analysis, and the data with heterogeneity were analysed by fixed-effects model (FEM) meta-analysis. We evaluated anxiety, pain, duration of mechanical ventilation, hospital length of stay, stress hormones, opioid consumption, and vital signs, including heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO2), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) after cardiothoracic surgery. The meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed with RevMan 5.4 and Stata 14 software, and trial sequential analysis was conducted using TSA 0.9.5.10 Beta software. This study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO. RESULTS: The study included 24 randomized controlled trials with a total of 1576 patients. Our analysis showed that music therapy can significantly reduce the anxiety scores (SMD= -0.74, 95% CI [-0.96, -0.53], p \u3c 0.01) and pain scores (SMD= -1.21, 95% CI [-1.78, -0.65], p \u3c 0.01) of patients after cardiothoracic surgery. Compared with the control group, music therapy dramatically raised postoperative SpO2 (SMD = 0.75, 95% CI [0.11, 1.39], p = 0.02). In addition, the experimental group had significant statistical significance in reducing HR, SBP and opioid consumption. However, there was no significant difference in respiratory rate, stress hormones, diastolic blood pressure, length of hospital stay, or the duration of mechanical ventilation between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Music therapy can significantly reduce anxiety, pain, HR, SBP, and postoperative opioid use and even improve SpO2 in patients who undergo cardiothoracic surgery. Music therapy has a positive effect on patients after cardiothoracic surgery with few side effects, so it is promising for use in clinics.
