I Told the Sunset About U
The purpose of my project is to take on multiple roles and complete all the steps of a song independently from the perspective of an Asian singer. I Told the Sunset About You is a 6-song EP inspired by “You know, one loves the sunset when one is so sad”, from Antoine de Saint-Exupery\u27s The Little Prince. The sunset, while beautiful and romantic, makes me feel lonely and depressed, symbolizing the passing of life. The EP reflects my journey of loss and growth after my grandmother\u27s passing. The EP\u27s theme is life, time, love, and letting go of family issues while becoming self-aware and accepting imperfections. It\u27s about bidding farewell to the past and embracing gratitude while cherishing relationships and maintaining a sense of childlike wonder. I combined elements from electronic, dance, disco, K-pop, R&B, and hip-hop to create synthetic, upbeat road trip tracks that express the lonely thoughts hidden behind a happy, childlike vibe through a combination of imagery description and inner monologue. I aim to create universal songs that offer comfort and support by sharing my experiences. The lyrics, written in English, reflect Asian cultural perspectives and implicit language habits, providing a unique blend of direct and euphemistic expression.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1082/thumbnail.jp
OddFoot
My Culminating Experience titled OddFoot is a five song EP. A collection of hyper-pop, indie-rock and hiphop inspired tracks, OddFoot is a dense, humorous, and distinct work blending personal and sincere narratives about occurrences in my life with an ironic lyrical tone and an original electronic landscape. The strongest and most unifying aspect is the lyrics, heavily focused on rhyme to a comical extent. They discuss intimate topics under jarring layers of imagery and irony in a humorous and awkward manner such that the listener may not be sure if the artist is truly joking, or what the artist’s intention truly is. It is nevertheless funny, interesting, emotionally vulnerable and captivating, and sonically novel and stimulating not only as an instrumental, but also by the interaction of the sound design with the unique lyrics and tone. The songs are “I Hate”, “Chris n’ Alyssa”, “Sour Candy”, “Rigor Mortis”, and “Happy Again”, respectively about my frustrating experience and mental state during the BNYC program, my bother’s wedding, a sugary, toxic-relationship metaphor taken comically too far, the death of my grandmother, and the enduring longing and hope of a long-distance relationship.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1083/thumbnail.jp
MISS SYMPHONY
This project is a 5 song EP and it is about my transition from classical music to pop music. To me, classical music and pop music are on either ends of the musical spectrum. I always felt like I was in the middle and wanted to express this in this EP by incorporating both classical elements such as strings, with a rough texture of the rock/pop genre. By using these contrasting elements, I created a sound that introduces my roots in classical violin, as well as my new career in pop music. I wanted the EP to sound raw like band music, so I recorded most of the instruments in the studio. I plan to use this project to rebrand my artist image to engage a mostly Asian-American audience from 18-28 who enjoy music by artists such as beabadoobee, wave to earth, Yerin Baek, and 88 rising.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1086/thumbnail.jp
Taming Instincts
The aim of this project is to emphasize the main features in my musical background that were partially present in my past work, but never clearly in focus. As a producer and guitarist, I want to spotlight both my guitar expertise and my producer skills to create a distinct sound, and I did so by creating a producer playlist that emphasizes the contrast between instinctive improvised ideas coming from guitar and rigid patterns derived from minimalism. I was encouraged to use the guitar as my artistic voice in multiple valuable feedback sessions, so I decided to enrich the songs with an original guitar system for which I designed a tuning. The minimal production/ improvisation contrast and this original system will be not only at the core of my refined artistic identity, but also of my career plans, which are described in detail.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1087/thumbnail.jp
HEY! DON\u27T HIDE
HEY! DON’T HIDE! I CAN SEE EVERYTHING... I know that many people like to escape. But it doesn’t mean that we can solve the problem by escaping some conflicts or dark sides. No matter where we hide, all problems will still be there. So why not...CATCH IT, and KILL IT! Open the curtain directly and face the fear in your heart. A sober person can’t pretend to sleep all the time. In my CE, the styles of different songs are very different. They include post-rock, indie rock, gothic, pop, cinematic, triphop, folk music ect. And many songs have a certain degree of creep vibe. As the vocalist for all songs, I have done some analysis on my vocal part. I think my vocal=30% mysterious+30% creepy+20% scary+20% sweet, which fits my personal brand of creepy girl and scary doll very well.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1094/thumbnail.jp
THAT KID
I can only say that I\u27m very happy, really happy, I feel that the time I came to berklee is the happiestctime I\u27ve had in the past few years, and it\u27s the only time in my life that I feel happy to go to school, cnot only for myself, but also I’ve learned a lot about what I\u27m doing and how I can do what I wantcto do, and most importantly, the kind of upwardly mobile and friendly atmosphere that mycclassmates have created is something that I haven\u27t ever experienced before, and it\u27s given me an idea of what a good environment for music making can be like, and it’s something that I can also pursue when I leave the school later on. Through many activities, and with the help of my friends, I\u27m slowly learning how to better express myself musically, customize my goals and enhance them according to my personality in engineering and songwriting, as well as in life.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1095/thumbnail.jp

A Personalized Music Intervention in Nursing Home Residents Living With Dementia: Findings From a Randomized Study
Utilizing a randomized control design, this mixed method study aimed to assess the impact of a personalized music intervention on mood, agitation level, and psychotropic drug use in individuals with moderate to advanced dementia residing in long-term care facilities. The sample comprised of 261 participants, with 148 in the intervention group and 113 in the control group. Data were collected from three sources: quantitative data from the Minimum Data Set and the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory, observational data of music-listening sessions, and an administrator survey regarding the lead staff person\u27s perceptions of the intervention. Findings, based on Mixed Effect Models and content analyses, revealed positive impacts of the personalized music intervention on residents living with dementia. This low-cost, easily implementable intervention, requiring no special licensure for administration, can significantly enhance the quality of life for nursing facility residents
The Safety and Effectiveness of Music Medicine as an Intervention for Depression: A Systematic Evaluation and Re-evaluation
BACKGROUND: As the methodological quality and evidence level of the existing systematic reviews (SRs) on music as an intervention for depression have not been thoroughly evaluated, a systematic evaluation and re-evaluation (SERE) was conducted. METHODS: Multiple databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, SinoMed, Wanfang, and the VIP database were searched for SRs and meta-analyses (MAs) on the effectiveness of music as an intervention for depression. The literature screening, evaluation of methodological quality, and assessment of evidence level were carried out by a team of researchers. The methodological quality was evaluated using the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2) scale in accordance with the 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) criteria were utilized to assess the level of evidence. RESULTS: A total of 18 SRs were included in the analysis. The 2020 PRISMA guidelines were utilized to evaluate various aspects such as search terms, funding sources, statistical methods for missing values, subgroup and sensitivity analyses, certainty assessment, excluded literature citations, assessment of publication bias, protocol information, conflicts of interest, and data availability, which were rarely reported. The evaluation of the studies using the AMSTAR 2 scale revealed that one article was rated as high quality, six were rated as low quality, and 11 were rated as very low quality. Based on the GRADE criteria evaluation, the quality of the evidence was found to be inconsistent, with reports primarily consisting of medium-quality evidence. CONCLUSION: The methodological quality of SRs/MAs of music as an intervention in depression is generally poor, and the level of evidence is generally low
The Role and Outcomes of Music Therapy During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials
INTRODUCTION: The abundant functions of music and its effects on human\u27s mental and physical health have been verified since ancient times, but rarely received attention as an alternative obstetric intervention. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the benefits of music therapy on prenatal and delivery experiences of pregnant women. METHOD: A systematic search for articles was conducted in electronic databases including CINAHL, Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, and CNKI. A total of 240 articles were identified, and 17 studies were selected for this review. The extracted data included author, year, location, sample size, intervention phase, type of music, music therapy strategy, measuring instruments, and results. The data were organized chronologically based on the publication year of each study. RESULT: The articles indicated that music therapy has advantages in reducing pain during childbirth, lowering anxiety and stress levels in mothers, improving sleep quality, and increasing fetal movements, basal fetal heart rate, and accelerations. CONCLUSION: Based on the findings, it can be concluded that music therapy is an effective approach to enhance the experience of pregnant women during pregnancy and delivery. Therefore, its implementation in obstetrical clinical practice is highly recommended
