    Classics Reborn

    No full text
The focus of my project is the adaptation of classical music into contemporary musical genres. This project is the first time I am arranging music for a band and trying out new music technologies like Ableton, after over 20 years of experience playing classical violin. I posed a considerable challenge. Classical musicians in South Korea often struggle to collaborate with popular music genres because of common biases against using classical instruments. The goal is to show different ways classical instruments can be used with alternative playing techniques. This new task made me face and conquer my deep-seated biases. Four different arrangements have been created, each with unique rhythms inspired by hip-hop, EDM, and swing jazz, and are now presented as classical interpretations with violin. These varied music pieces from various genres provide Korean classical musicians with new perspectives and inspiration.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1291/thumbnail.jp

Soul Sounds: Fusing Sound Healing and R&B

    No full text
The purpose of this reflection is to outline my incorporation of sound healing elements into the R&B genre. My overall goal is to reinforce my identity as an artist who creates healing music, developing a foundation on creating sound healing influenced music within future collaborations, and aiding in the healing of my global community through music. To achieve this, I conducted a survey of an audience sample to understand healing from their perspective, interviewed a sound healer from my hometown, hosted a panel of musicians from around the world, and studied the history and science of Ayurvedic sound healing through singing bowls. What I found was that the experience of healing through music is entirely subjective and based on one’s personal experiences. Additionally, I found that to be a healing artist I must heal myself, and the healing that shows through my music can serve as healing for others. Congruent to this, I applied various engineering and mixing techniques to assist in incorporating sound healing into the R&B genre, ultimately producing an EP that outlines the western chakra system. These elements include singing bowl tuned to D, sample sounds (thunder, rain, ocean, etc.) to create space for healing, ethereal background vocals to create atmosphere within the mix, mantra-like lyrics to promote intention within each chakra, and varying musical and vocal techniques to portray specific emotions. In pairing this project with a redeveloped artist identity, I analyze my brand, brand kit, and audience to appropriately sync the music with my overall artist presentation and identity. The reflection concludes with a professional development plan, outlining my release, means of employment within the music industry, and future plans of developing a curriculum in healing music aimed to encourage the next generation of artists to heal the world through music.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-contemporary-performance/1270/thumbnail.jp

    Magia

    No full text
Magia is an imaginative fantasy musical that follows Leilani, a teen girl who attempts to save her ailing father by stealing a wish from the magical island, Tekoha. In our story, the island of Tekoha has magia to grant a wish to its citizens when they come of age. However, every time a wish is granted in Tekoha, something of equal value is taken away from a neighboring island called Deyo, where Leilani lives. Magia explores themes of cultural identity, social inequality and unbalanced levels of power in a Latin-Caribbean inspired allegory, ultimately asking the question “What is real magic and how can we access it in a society that accepts the status quo?” As we work towards bringing new audiences to the theater, Magia aims to bring an informality and “laid-back” tone to the storytelling, taking the social pressure off of being in a theater, so all can have a comfortable experience.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1011/thumbnail.jp

    Kapu!

    No full text
KAPU! is a new musical comedy following disillusioned yoga teacher Summer who moves to Hawaiʻi to put down roots after a lifetime of traveling. However, sleepy rainy Hilo is not the island paradise she dreamed it would be. Her dreams are upended when she, and her local neighbor and polar opposite Charlie, are cursed by two Hawaiian gods who doom their businesses to fail. Together, Summer and Charlie must overcome their differences to overcome the curse. Using a contemporary pop rock score accentuated with Hawaiian folk music and island pop music such as funk and reggae, this show interprets Hawaiian mythology from a local tradition. Josefin and Sydney co-wrote book, music, and lyrics for the first full draft of this new musical during the BerkleeNYC program. This culminated in a table read and a 15-minute showcase of selections from the full draft performed live with four actors and rhythm section.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1022/thumbnail.jp

    Mimesis

Mimesis is a musical exploration into the concepts of imitation and simulation. Based on the writings of Jean Baudrillard, I aimed to create a 6 song EP with thought-provoking lyrics and hyperreal sound design. It blends folk music and psychedelia in chamber-pop style mixes. The project involved experimentation with Bitwig Studio, modular synthesis, writing constraints, acoustic simulation, and convolution among other things.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1049/thumbnail.jp

Yes I\u27m a Bitch Thank You

    No full text
This full female empowerment EP titled, “Yes I’m a Bitch Thank You,” is made by women, for women and everyone who loves us. Told from a strong female perspective, this artist development project embodies female liberation, confidence, unapologetic sass, and will also challenge societal norms. It is important that women have the freedom to say what we want and what we feel without judgement and without labels. Unfortunately, when we speak our minds, we are labeled as a “bitch.” We are taking that word back. Today’s women are not ashamed to be strong, powerful, bold, risky, etc. If being these things makes me a bitch then, “yes I’m a bitch thank you.”https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1056/thumbnail.jp

    PostHuman Aesthetic

    No full text
This EP, titled PostHuman Aesthetic, was inspired by my anxious period at BerkleeNYC. The emotions and pressures I experienced were also felt by my classmates, which led me to ponder how we can coexist with our own emotions. If we can learn to adapt to them, prevent any adverse effects, and use them to develop ourselves, we might achieve a new form of human evolution. In this sense, the post-human might evolve into a biological entity with some characteristics of animals or plants, creating a form I call post-human aesthetic. From a technical perspective, I wrote a script for this imagined future world. I used different tracks to represent various facets of this world, with each song addressing a different real-life topic. These topics include reputation, family relationships, self-recognition, multiple personalities, and the world\u27s scenes. Beyond the tracks, this concept EP requires visual content support, so I used AI to generate cover images based on my script. Throughout the project, I realized that emotion is a powerful tool for creation because it comes from the depths of your heart. The production skills I\u27ve learned during this process, such as arranging, mixing, and mastering, have been invaluable. Designing harmonies was the most challenging part of the process due to my limited music theory knowledge. However, this limitation has given the tracks a unique flavor. I might write more tracks to complete the concept album and further enrich this imagined world.https://remix.berklee.edu/graduate-studies-cmat/1067/thumbnail.jp
