Interactivity, expressiveness and engagement in newsgame “Back to 1964: your life under the dictatorship”
Get PDFIn 2014, a series of events marked the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Brazil. The popular Superinteressante magazine launched a review of the facts through the newsgame “Back to 1964: your life under the dictatorship”. The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the newsgame, considering its expressiveness, engagement and experience proportionate to the player. The analysis draws heavily on concepts developed by Frasca (2001), Bogost (2008), Bogost, Ferrari & Schweizer (2010), Iurgel & Zagalo (2009), Ferrari (2009), Gonçalves & Zagalo (2010), Zagalo (2012), Sicart (2008), among others. The experiences with the game were used to categorize the levels of interactivity and reactivity, according to the possible paths followed by the reader/player. The extent to which the proposed simulation delineated narratives linked to the editorial profile of the magazine, and to what extent this can be used to encourage public debate
E- migrant: technological, geographical and social spaces. New actors and spaces for political participation?
Get PDFThis article is based on the results provided by the research project named “A study of recent migratory movement from Spain to Uruguay. New technological, geographical and social spaces for citizen vincluation” (Olivera et al., 2014) and, by using the concept of “e-migrant”, it analyses if the introduction of ICTs enables the renewal of the traditional forms of political participation and public decision-making. Having the concept of e-migration as a starting point, the article aims at identifying what are the forms and the type of communication networks used by the new Spanish migrants as well as the way they connect and communicate (politically, socially and culturally) in Uruguay. It also aims at problematizing these issues under the light of the Social Sciences theories, following the critical investigative line of research about the “Information Society”. The authors argue that the ways new Spanish migrants connect to each other in Uruguay are dialectic relationships and are also a result of a social process that depends on the decisions and on the significances given by individuals. These decisions and subjectivities are not determined solely by the structures that are inherent to their condition as migrants, neither are they totally contingent to this condition; they move in a space of possible configurations in order to be re-signified in concrete situations
Radio mobility in the digital era: interactivity, participation and content share possibilities in Iberian broadcasters
Get PDFIn the context of the scientific research into radio, recent years have encouraged many theories about the meaning of a post-radio (Oliveira & Portela, 2011), thus enlisting several parameters regarding the inclusion of contemporary radio in the digital and online environments. This digital migration has led to the development of mobile applications for radio, broadening the communicative potential of audiences (Aguado, Feijoo & Martínez, 2013), as well as promoting convergence of interactive content among listeners-users. Aware of this opportunity, the main broadcasters in Spain and Portugal have broadened their radiophonic scope to the mobile platform, especially geared towards smartphones through the development of mobile applications, commonly known as apps (Cerezo, 2010). As a symbol of a culture in permanent changing, smartphones not only provide greater easiness in terms of access and interaction, but also afford larger opportunities for disseminating content among audiences, a phenomenon that some studies have labelled as user distributed content (Villi, 2012). This article presents an exploratory analysis of the current policies of the main Spanish and Portuguese radio broadcasters regarding mobile applications, evaluating the different levels of interaction and participation in these platforms. This observation led to the conclusion, among other findings, that the mobile platform represents a supplementary channel for traditional FM radio, rather than a new medium with its own language and expression

Get PDFA “era da Informação” constituiu tema de uma extensa pesquisa de Castells, no final dos anos 1980. Várias das implicações debatidas por este autor naquela altura são hoje observáveis, principalmente nas tendências de precarização das atividades de produção da informação. Perante a procura cada vez mais acentuada de informação, as empresas de comunicação, as televisões, os jornais impressos e online desenvolvem métodos terceirizados de produção e informação que consistem em recrutar, através de concursos, uma elite letrada de outros países para produzir “notícias locais” de qualidade. Neste artigo debruçamo-nos sobre um caso concreto de terceirização de informação a partir de uma plataforma de bloggers recrutados essencialmente em África. Com base na análise de entrevistas realizadas com dez desses bloggers, mostramos, ainda que de forma exploratória, os conflitos emergentes desse processo de produção terceirizada da informação. Na problematização mobilizamos conceitos desenvolvidos na área da sociologia do trabalho, bem como outras produções teóricas recentes sobre a precarização do trabalho informacional

O EDSD assume as características específicas de um romance de tese (um “jogo de tese”, neste caso específico), que Suleiman (1983: 1) definiu como sendo um tipo de romance que avança explicitamente “um corpo doutrinário ou sistema de ideias reconhecidos”, e que apresenta um “inequívoco sistema de valores dualista, [...] regras de ação orientadas para o leitor [e um] intertexto doutrinal” (Suleiman, 1983: 54). Segundo o princípio da retórica processual (Bogost, 2008), a tese do EDSD é defendida especialmente através de uma estrutura formal do jogo, sobretudo nos processos de resolução de problemas efetuados pelo jogador. Por conseguinte, analisamos o EDSD como um jogo de tese, propondo o conceito de “micro-instrumento de encerramento processual do campo experiencial” resultante do encontro entre as ciências hermenêuticas e cognitivas. Immigration as a risk factor to health: analysing Folha de S. Paulo’s representation of an African immigrant during the Ebola outbreak
Get PDFThis article analyses the construction of stereotypes about African immigrants in the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo through its coverage of the Ebola outbreak in Africa in 2014. Special attention is given to the way the newspaper reported the suspected infection of the Guinean immigrant Soulyname Bah. It is observed that, through the logic of fear, there was a labeling process of opposition between “us” and “them”. Revulsion was promoted with regard to differences, via the re-signification of African ethnicity characteristics, which started to be seen as indicators of health risk factors. Within the risk society, media coverage of Ebola, as well as of other pandemics, reveals an important and paradoxical truth: we might be living in an era known as the apogee of human scientific advancements but this has not necessarily mitigated our fears and panics about potential dangers (Lerner & Sacramento, 2015). In this context, migration turns out to be a question of security related to a plurality of threats (terrorism, crime, disease, and unemployment, for instance). As we conclude in this article, the securitization of migration might be, therefore, described as a process that substitutes concerns about social and structural problems by institutional, technological and discursive practices that end up allowing the identification and the ascription of responsibility to specific groups

Between the norm and the exception: gender asymmetries in portuguese newsmagazines
Get PDFThis paper, which is informed by a feminist perspective, presents an analysis of the gender representations that emerge in the Portuguese newsmagazines, focusing in particular on their intersection with the thematic profile of this type of medium. The results suggest that these publications tend to favour representational paradigms that are consistent with the ‘benevolent sexism’. While men are represented as holders of power and agents of influence, women are portrayed as individuals that depend on the mentoring of their male counterparts in the exercise of leadership. The Portuguese newsmagazines thus invisibilise the diversity of identities and experiences, encouraging the perpetuation of androcentric values and unequal power relations
Narrative, history, and fiction: history games as boundary works
Get PDFThis work arises from the reflections generated by a post-doctoral study that investigates how history games can contribute to the production and dissemination of representations, pictures, and imaginaries of the past. We understand history games to be digital electronic games whose structure contains narratives or simulations of historical elements (Neves, 2010). The term notion of “border works” is used by Glezer and Albieri (2009) to discuss the role of literary and artistic works that, standing outside the historiographical field and having a fictional character, are forms of the dissemination of historical knowledge and approximation with the past. We want to show how, under the impact of the linguistic turn, the boundaries between history and fiction have been blurred. Authors such as White (1995) and Veyne (2008) found both a convergence with and identification between historical narrative and literary narrative that interrogates the epistemological status of history as a science. These critiques result in an appreciation of fictional works as both knowledge and the dissemination of historical knowledge of the past. We then examine the elements of the audiovisual narratives of electronic games (Calleja, 2013; Frasca, 1999; Jull, 2001; Murray, 2003; Zagalo, 2009) in an attempt to understand their specificity. Next, we investigate the place of the narrative and historical simulations of electronic games in contemporary culture (Fogu, 2009). Finally, we discuss how historical knowledge is appropriated and represented by history games (Arruda, 2009; Kusiak, 2002) and analyze their impact on the production of a historical consciousness or an imaginary about the past
