Language and meanings of human subjectivity in urban culture narratives: analyzing stickers used on cars
Based on conceptions about language, urban technologies and narratives consummated within everyday life interactions, we problematize the cultural practice of narration in the urban context. We present the analysis of the data gathered during a research developed in the city of Santa Maria, Brazil, involving the collection and analysis of images and conversations with car drivers, as well as readers of car stickers, popularly known as “happy family” stickers. Among other findings, we observed that “happy family” stickers, strategically applied on the bumpers of cars, instigate several enlightening meaning processes of individual and collective forms of self and hetero identitarian narrative in the urban context
In the meantime or the (ab)use of online accessing during mobility
The recent development of ICT has created conditions for people to be constantly online. These days is common to receive an email ended by a sentence like “sent from my iPhone”, meaning that the sender used his or her cell phone to send it and therefore his or her location is uncertain – could be in a restaurant, at work, at home or even moving. Social interaction, while commuting or travelling, was only possible when people were not travelling alone. Mobile telecommunications changed this scenario bringing the mobile communication to the time-space of dislocation. In recent years the spread of sales of smartphones and iphones has changed the motion scenarios. In what extended is this tendency connected to a leisure practice or to work continuity? Using a set of empirical data that combines the results of two mobility surveys in the Portuguese metropolitan areas, mobile interviews and visual research methods this paper debates the recent evolution of the time-space of mobility. The results allow us to discuss the role of ICT in the mediation of spaces anchor and the diversification of uses of Internet accessing while on mobility

Game as text as game: the communicative experience of digital games
We propose to regard video game as text, but not by literally understanding it as a verbal expression, and instead recognizing that many assumptions of literary theory are relevant to its analysis. This option seems to put us in sync with the narratologists, who exalt games as new manifestations of narrative, but cling to a conception of text as world that values illusionist effects. Instead, we are interested in experiences that, against this perspective, recognize the possibility of regarding game as a text that is a game - an incomplete object that is to be updated by the reader in a self-reflective relationship with the signs that compose it, a central notion to theories such as Iser’s and Dewey’s. Then, instead of focusing on strategies of immersion on large virtual worlds, we favor small independent casual games (such as Small Worlds, Grey, The Beggar, and Dys4ia) analyzing how, in these, take place experiences that allow us to re-examine the aesthetic potential of the medium
Second screen and information: history, definition and clues for the future
Framed by the expansion of a mobility centred technological market, Second Screen applications have become increasingly relevant in recent years. This popularity and the adjoined increase in investment by major TV operators have promoted a broad range of services. A preliminary analysis of the current offering suggests that entertainment and e-commerce products are the most common type of Second Screen apps available. The research question of this paper is thus ‘where will these developments take us?’. We will map out the historical background of Second Screen apps, propose a tentative definition and theoretical model for its functioning, and indicate possible convergence points with the journalistic production – an intersection point yet to be explored and with potential for appropriation

Why do i fall for the elf, when i am no orc myself? The ımplıcatıons of vırtual avatars ın dıgıtal communıcatıon
Various recent research on online avatars debated their authenticity in terms of representing the individuals that manage them. Seemingly users would construct an enhanced or idealized presence of themselves online, yet fail to realize that others also do so when seeking information of other users through their avatars. This phenomenon becomes even more curious inside online video game spaces, since video game avatars are already expected to be unrelated with their players but are still seen as sources of information about them. This study approaches the issue as a communication problem and tries to explain the process through Berger’s Uncertainty Reduction Theory (URT). Merging URT with various other nonverbal and visual communication approaches, it is debated how video game avatars – seemingly unrelated or arbitrarily related entitites with their users – become information sources about them. Additionally to elaborate further on the process, the relationship between self and avatars is also analyzed. To create this link, semiotic theories of Saussure and Lacan were expanded and a new approach was proposed. Saussure’s signification process and Lacan’s chains of signification were adapted into digital avatars to define an on-going feedback loop between the video game avatars and the self
