Animal Characters as Deux ex Machina in Maranao Folktales
This study examined the portrayal of animals in Maranao Folktales. More specifically, it examined (1) how animals were depicted in Maranao Folktales; (2) their role or common purpose in the tales; and (3) how they were used as Deux ex Machina. To determine these, the paper employed the formalistic critical theory known as New Criticism and Textual Analysis. New Criticism accentuates the importance of close reading. That is, examining a text closely without the use of external evidence to explain the work. Textual analysis, on the other hand, is a methodology that involves understanding language, symbols, and/or pictures present in texts to gain information regarding how people make sense of and communicate life and life experiences.
The findings reveal that animal characters are portrayed in Maranao folktales as helpful advisers who are extremely wise. They have the capability to teach human beings a lesson and allow them to rise from poverty or even from a difficult situation. They are depicted as extremely loyal who are willing to do anything when indebted or when they are grateful. Their common function or role is to provide assistance when necessary and to appear right when they are needed. They give the protagonists knowledge, talent, skill, or solution to a problem, resulting to a cooperative and beneficial relationship between human beings and animals. They also appear as motif: magic and intelligent animals who bring in harmony, wealth, and greatness. Furthermore, they may serve as symbols. They may either represent as God’s providence or as the follies/vices and cunningness of human beings. Lastly, they are used as Deux ex Machina. They appear just when the situation has become too difficult for the protagonists, and they are introduced only when solution to a crisis is absolutely necessary. By being present, they can change the course of the story or tale. They save the day as deux ex machina to show that even if the protagonists are handsome, intelligent, or powerful, they still need assistance, a guide, and an adviser from time to time, as they are only human beings who can be vulnerable and powerless.
Factors Related to the Incidence of Pneumonia in Children under Five at the Makki Public Health Center, Lanny Jaya Regency
Background: Pneumonia is one of the acute lower respiratory tract infections which is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age, especially in developing countries. The risk factors that cause the high mortality rate of pneumonia in children under five in developing countries are pneumonia that occurs in infancy, low birth weight, not receiving measles, DPT and Hib immunizations, not receiving adequate breastfeeding, malnutrition, and the environment. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the factors related to the incidence of Pneumonia in children under five at the Makki Public Health Center, Lanny Jaya Regency. Methods: This study was conducted at the Makki Public Health Center, Lanny Jaya Regency using a quantitative method with a Cross-Sectional design. A total of 21 cases were used in the study. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test. Result: According to the findings of this study, low birth weight (p=0.002) was significantly related to the incidence of Pneumonia in children under five at the Makki Public Health Center, Lanny Jaya Regency. Antibacterial Activity of Rubus multibreatus Le’vl Plant Extracts Against Staphylococcus aureus
The genus Rubus is a family of shrubs and mostly edible berries such as rasp berries, blue berries, strawberries. Of the 2208 species, 331 are documented (3,) and about 139 native to China, and being a wild plant, it can grow anywhere except for Antarctica (1) and with a wide variety as well as fairly similar phyto-components(2). Rubus multibreatus is commonly known in China as Da wu pao, its leaves used in teas and to locally treat stomach upsets, haemorrhoids and rheumatism, (1). Over years, due to a variety of intraspecies, it has acquired different synonyms, which include; R.mallodes, R.andropoga, R.clinocephalus, R.pluribracteatus, R.terminalia and R.macroptera (4
Comparison Study of Distance Methods in Nonlinear Panel Data Clustering with K-Means Method
Cluster analysis is used to group objects based on the similarity of characteristics between objects. Cluster analysis will be applied to nonlinear panel data using Indonesian Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) data with the aim of grouping Provinces based on the number of active positive cases using the K-means method. The first stage will be a simulation to get the best distance method on nonlinear panel data. The distance method used is the Euclidean, Manhattan, Maximum, Frechet, and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW). The simulation results are obtained after running all distance methods with 36 scenarios from four generation data models, the maximum distance method is the best distance method with a total of 20 highest accuracy values compared to other distance methods. The maximum distance method will be applied to real data. The real data results showed that the optimal number of clusters is formed when three clusters are formed with the value of the Calinski Harabatz (CH) criteria of 143,459. Cluster A has 30 members, Cluster B has three members, while Cluster C has one member from DKI Jakarta Province
Metacognitive Awareness; its Effects on the Reading Comprehension of the English 2 Students
This study aimed to determine the relationship between the Metacognitive Awareness and the level of Reading Comprehension of English 2 Students in the Mindanao State University- Main Campus. Specifically, it dwelt on the following: (1) the participants’ profile in terms of Gender, Ethnicity, and Degree Program; (2) participants’ Personal Reading History; (3) participants’ Level of Metacognitive Awareness; (4) Participant’s Reading Comprehension skills based on the Reading Comprehension tests; (5) participants; level of reading comprehension when grouped according to their profile in terms of Gender, Degree Program, and Personal Reading History; (6) the significant relationship between the Metacognitive Awareness and the level of Reading Comprehension skills of participants; and, (7) the extent to which the Metacognitive Awareness predicts reading comprehension skills. A descriptive-evaluative research design was employed. The finding determined that four reading comprehension skill namely, literal, evaluative, inferential, and applied showed poor performance. Moreover, the relationship between the metacognitive awareness and the reading comprehension skills of the participants, only evaluative level resulted to be significant. Thus, this study implies that monitoring comprehension of the students determine whether they understood what they are reading. Parents and teachers alike can promote these skills by providing ample materials and expose them to different genres at a very early age
Determination of the Content of Organochlorine Pesticides Residues in Chicken Eggs Sold in Bamako
Pesticides used in agriculture enter the food chain, because of their chemical stability persist and their accumulation in different media in regions where they are used regularly. Their high solubility in the fat means that they can be found in the chicken eggs through poultry feed. The present study, aimed to determine the levels of pesticide residues in eggs in 36 composite samples of chicken eggs at twelve sale points distributed between the six communes of the District of Bamako. The samples were extracted and analyzed in the laboratory by gas chromatography to determine the residues of four organochlorine pesticides. The results showed that 58% of eggs sold in Bamako are contaminated by organochlorine pesticides. The average concentrations of the pesticides detected and quantified was respectively 0.52 mg/Kg ± 0.05 for DDT, 0.15 mg/Kg ± 0.04 for endosulfan ?, 0.23 mg/Kg ± 0, 03 for ? endosulfan and 0.02 mg/Kg ± 0.01 for dieldrin. DDT was the most encountered pesticide in 53% of the samples, Endosulfan A and Endosulfan B were encountered in 36% and the lowest dosed dieldrin with less than 6% of the egg samples analysed. The feed for laying hens is largely made up of the following three ingredients: maize, fishmeal and cottonseed cake which are highly exposed to contamination by pesticides. These average levels of three residues identified in the egg samples are well above the maximum residue limit (MRL) and therefore unacceptable for consumption because they are already prohibited pesticides

Resilience Measurement – Financial Survival Bag Concept Using Rough Fuzzy Set Approach
The current Covid-19 pandemic has starkly revealed the importance of being resilient to enable an organization to stay in business. A resilient performance measurement model to constantly measure an organization’s financial resilience is thus necessary to ensure the continued survivability of the organization. The purpose of this research is to develop a resilience measurement model to measure and unify various metrics into a single unit-less index. This paper is an extension of work on the financial survival bag concept and the measures and metrics from [1]. The financial resilience measurement model was developed using the rough fuzzy set method for any participating SME manufacturer. This model intends to solve the research gaps from previous research conducted on resilience measurement to estimate the duration an organization can survive based on its current resilience result and to gauge the interaction of risk/ disruption with resilience capabilities. A case study was conducted and the evaluation concurred with the findings of the proposed model as the results reflected their current resilience level. In essence, this research has managed to offer a new way of measurement for resilience to evaluate the financial resilience of any SME manufacturer in Malaysia
