Perceptions of the Importance of Studying English among Average Korean University Students

    Get PDF
When students undertake English studies, one might assume that their natural drive and curiosity for the subject would lead them.  However, in Korea, my observation is that most students study English at the behest of some influential force or figure in their lives or that it is a compulsory requirement not because it is their own earnest passion.  This paper will attempt to answer that question.  I have surveyed 359 students directly at two average Korean universities about their personal feelings about the importance of learning English.  I hope to determine whether, despite the hardships, they think it is worth the effort or if they are simply learning to please overzealous parents, school, and government administrators or prepare for the corporate sector\u27s current hiring requirements

Learning Outside the School Classroom Setting: The Case of the Physical Education

    Get PDF
Outdoor learning, such as the one taking place within the school module of the Physical Education, is an educational process that occurs through activities in the external environment, outside the traditional classroom setting and appears to have aroused intense research interest lately.  A characteristic feature of external learning is the educational activity that takes place in the external environment and is therefore referred to as a method of acquiring education through experience(experiential learning), and as a method of learning through relationships and interactions with other people. This paper deals with both aspects and aims at analyzing thoroughly all the dimensions and parameters that play a decisive role in the success of such an educational

The Impact of Growth Hormone Treatment on Lipid Profile in Pediatric Growth-Hormone Deficiency

    Get PDF
The lipid metabolism is not a stand-alone entity, and the hormonal involvement in this system appears of great importance. Growth hormone (GH) has a central role among the endocrine mediators, as demonstrated by studies in GH-deficient individuals. Atherogenic lipid profile is frequently described in these patients, and treatment intervention may help normalize them. Studies have revealed that gender and genetic polymorphism in genes involved in the growth process and metabolism may explain the variability of treatment responses. Until recently, hormonal substitution was used solely to improve final adult height, but there are indications that long-term treatment is advised and necessary to maintain adequate functionality of intermediary metabolism and protect from early cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality

The Factors that Influence Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) Students’ Satisfaction Level towards Students Affair Management System (SAMS) in China & Malaysia

    Get PDF
In a traditional organizational structure for higher education institution (HEIs), academic and student affairs divisions may not collaborate efficiently. The lack of collaboration may be affecting the overall experiences of the students. Academic and personal development of students is affected not only by the curriculum and classroom instruction, but also by the quality of student development services and student affairs management. Thus, this paper aims to examine the factors that influence students\u27 satisfaction with the student\u27s affair management system (SAMS) in Malaysian and China higher education (HEIs). This quantitative study examined the relationship between students\u27 satisfaction and their background, nationality, students-faculty contact, co-curricular activities, higher education strategic plan, active & collaborative learning of student affairs systems. A research model was developed. The study\u27s total sample size was 200 students, with 115 from China and 85 from Malaysia. Hypotheses were examined using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Independent Sample t-test). Consequently, students are satisfied with the responsibilities and conduct of university students\u27 affairs management in term of faculty-student interaction, extracurricular organized by HEIs & HEIs development plan. The results of the study may affect the perspectives of policymakers\u27 management specialists, who will then be able to focus on the student\u27s development plan

    Get PDF
Background: Contraceptive services are the provision or installation of contraception or other contraception-related measures to candidates and participants in family planning services carried out in family planning service facilities in order to help married couples give birth at the ideal age, have a number of children, and set the ideal birth spacing of children. The Covid-19 pandemic has created challenges in implementing the Family Planning (KB) Program, particularly limited access to family planning services. Objectives: The goal of this study is to describe the use of contraceptive devices and pills, as well as the proportion of acceptors by type, method, and regency, in Papua Province before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: This is a concurrent embedded (unbalanced mix) research that combines quantitative and qualitative research methods with the research population, which is Couples of Fertile Age in Papua Province. The study\u27s sample consists of fertile couples who use family planning before and during the pandemic. The proportion table was used to analyze quantitative data, and the triangulation method was used to analyze qualitative data. Result: According to the findings, 34% of contraceptive devices and pills (Alokon) were used prior to the pandemic, and 39% were used during the pandemic. The proportion of contraceptive devices and pills used before the pandemic was 29 percent for Long Term Contraception Method (MKJP) and 71 percent for non-MKJP. During the pandemic, MKJP was found in 28% of people and non-MKJP in 72%. Before the pandemic, the proportion of contraceptive devices and pills used by type was 49.27 percent for injection and 0.23 percent for Male Operation Method (MOP). In the event of a pandemic, inject 49.70% and MOP 0.21 percent. The proportion of ALOKON use by regency before the pandemic was 26.47 percent in Jayapura City and 24.35 percent during the pandemic. Before and during the pandemic, Intan Jaya Regency was 0.04 percent

The Augmented ACD Models: High Frequency Modelling and Applications to BVMT Stocks

    Get PDF
We propose in this paper, a new work to model the durations between successive transactions of the Stock Exchange of Tunis (BVMT). For this purpose, the autoregressive approach of the ACD model will be extended to the class of augmented ACD models to model the data that arrive at irregularly spaced intervals in time called high-frequency data or Ultra-high frequency data. The choice of the interval remains crucial since the daily exchanges are too small

The Exotic Marketing of Canadian Minorities’ Internal Exile

    Get PDF
This paper seeks to examine the act of marketing Asian-Canadian writers like Joy Kogawa, Hiromi Goto, Shauna Baldwin and Gurjinder Basran, and their narratives/imaginary homelands, sad histories, unforgettable memories, or let us say, commercializing the internal exile of diasporic identities. In fact, the subversive nature of the writing of Kogawa, Goto, Baldwin and Basran, encourages them to stigmatize the Canadian multicultural trick which reveals an external makeup of diversity, while it hides an internal political and economic control. One can say that these writers’ novels are politically not innocent; what interests us is the aesthetic interconnection between the Asian-Canadian poetics and the Canadian politics and the consumption of this ethno-racial art within the logic of literary marketplace

Efficacy in the Provisioning of Educational Needs for Learners in Schools in the Amathole East Education District

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this article was to investigate the extent of efficacy on the part of departmental officials in the provisioning of resources for teaching and learning to schools in the Amathole East Education District (AEED). The idea was to establish the extent to which the Department of Education, in the context of this Education District, lives up to the expectations of schools in so far as the provisioning of educational needs of the learners in schools is concerned. The focus on AEED, however, does not preclude the context in which the District operates, which is the Provincial Department of Education and National.  Design/methodology/approach – Qualitative Research Method was used in this study. The approach to data collection was exploratory. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the aim of drawing experiences from the members of the National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGBs), Teacher Unions, School Principals and Teachers, as well as Literature Review. The researcher in this study adopted the approach of focus group discussions. A group of school principals, for instance, was invited to converge under one roof. Executive Members of Teacher Unions at Regional Level were also asked to converge under one roof for the purpose of group discussions. Then the researcher initiated a discussion with the focus group by throwing questions that were responded to spontaneously within the group. From time to time, in the course of the discussions, the researcher would ask follow-up questions. The questions were aimed at ensuring that the discussions are focussed on the issue at hand. They were also asked to ensure that the researcher obtained more clarity on issues ventilated on.  From the focus group discussions that ensued, the researcher was able to transcribe, code the ideas that came up, develop themes out of the ideas, make meaning of the themes and subsequently develop a principle. This is the procedure that the researcher applied across the focus groups that were interviewed, the members of the NASGB and the teachers in the case of this study. The Interpretive Phenomenological Theory (IPA) has been used as the basis for data analysis in this study. Findings – the view that resonated across participants in this study is that the provisioning of educational needs for learners in schools by the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape is in a terrible state. The recommendation is that the Minister should subject departmental officials to extensive capacitation programs on resource management. In addition to that the Minister should revise the policy on National Norms and Standards for School Funding (NNSSF) to cause it to speak to the educational needs of the learners on the ground.  Research limitations/implications – Participants in the study might be unwilling to say things that would make the Department of Basic Education to appear in a bad light in the eyes of the public. Participants would do this for fear of making the Department of Education for which most of them work, as being brought into disrepute. This is a factor that has a potential to place restrictions on the methodologies and conclusions of the researcher in this study. It’s a factor that is not within the control of the researcher, despite him having made a concerted effort to allay fears on the part of participants. Practical implications - The findings and recommendations from this study will speak to the conscience of those in charge of creating an enabling environment for schools to allocate resources to schools as expected of them. The service delivery protests by school communities and labour unions against the officials of the department will either be greatly minimised or put to an end completely. The findings can also have an effect of influencing the budget allocation for the Department of Basic Education by the Minister of Finance. Many of the adverse findings in the study are attributable to the underfunding of schools by the State. Originality/value – The study zooms into issues besetting the functionality of schools in the Amathole East Education District as a result of lack of support from the District, as well as National and Provincial Head Offices.  The study provides a theoretical and empirical contribution to the existing literature on the critical issue of the quality of education in schools as provided for by education departments. There are practical recommendations that are made in the article to assist National and Provincial Departments to understand the impact and gravity of inadequate funding of schools by the State, as well as the need for accredited capacity building programmes for departmental officials

Electrochromic Properties of Nickel Hexacyanoferrate Thin Films Prepared by a Simple Chemical Deposition Method

    Get PDF
In this work a simple chemical bath deposition method was developed and employed for the preparation of Nickel Hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) films. The films were deposited by successive immersion of the fluorine doped glass substrates (FTO) into acidic aqueous solution of NiCl2 and K4[Fe(CN)6]. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed that the obtained NiHCF films had crystalline structure. Cycling voltammetry was performed in order to investigate the electrochemical properties of the films. Visible spectra of NiHCF films were recorded in-situ in the both, bleached and colored state. From those spectra were estimated the optical band gaps. The response times of the bleaching and coloring was estimated to an abrupt potential change from -2 V to +2 V and reverse. The coloration efficiency was estimated from the dependence of the optical density on charge density

The Relationship of CXC Chemokine Receptor 4 (CXCR4) Expression with Histopathological Grading of Invasive Breast Cancer

    Get PDF
Introduction: The histological grade of the tumor influences the prognosis of breast cancer. In metastatic breast cancer, the stromal cells produce a chemokine (C-X-C motif chemokine 12/CXCL12) or the so-called stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) as a chemoattractant, which binds to the chemokine receptor (C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4/CXCR4) which is expressed by breast cancer cells. This study aimed to determine the expression of CXCR4 in invasive breast cancer associated with histopathological grading of invasive breast cancer. Methods: This study is observational with a retrospective approach using a paraffin block archive sample diagnosed with Invasive Breast Cancer. Immunohistochemical staining using CXCR4 antibody and expression analysis was performed by light microscopy. The data were statistically analyzed by the Chi-Square test and presented in the table. The statistical test results were significant if the p-value was <0.05. Results: Showed no significant relationship between CXCR4 expression and histopathological grading in invasive breast cancer with a p-value = 0.467. Conclusion: The data of this study showed that the expression of CXCR4 in Invasive Breast Cancer varied and did not support its role in determining histopathological grading
