Background: Fashion could be dated back as to when humans had started evolving. The history of clothing began when humans had lost their fur and needed to protect themselves from the cold nights and the burning sun. Ever since clothes became in demand, the demand for quality and aesthetically pleasing clothes has never diminished. Looking around the State of Qatar, one can find numerous tailoring stores run by foreign designers or tailors, mostly Indians. The number of Filipino Fashion Designers in the country may even be less than a hundred. Different research studies regarding Filipino Fashion Designers are mostly rare as well. With much thought, the researchers have focused on the lived experiences of the Filipino Fashion Designers in the State of Qatar. Methods: This study made use of the qualitative approach focusing on phenomenology to fully understand the story of the unsung heroes of fashion designing with the central question, how Filipino fashion designers deal with challenges when it comes to providing designs. An in-depth was conducted among the participants to get what one designer has gone through in his/her day-to-day life. Findings: With the gathered data, the researchers were able to come up with three (3) main themes with three (3) sub themes; (1) Fashion Literacy: (1.1) Academics (1.2) Experience (1.3) Capabilities; (2) Stress and Mitigation: (2.1) Challenges (2.2) Adjustments (2.3) Fulfillment; (3) Fame and Association: (3.1) Collaboration (3.2) Recognition (3.3) Simulation. Recommendation: The results of this research study may be beneficial to students and other people with an interest with the topic being discussed in this paper. With the results of this phenomenology, one may continue an in depth analysis of the life of the Filipino designers, proposing new studies related to this paper.. One may also gather information that can be used in studying the life of other nationalities when it comes to fashion designing as the results may differ for other people

An Overview of Africa’s Precarious Positioning in Knowledge Society

    No full text
The study examines what Africa’s role and position were and are in the generation, dissemination and use of knowledge in the world.   Some of the factors which contribute to the status are explored. The methodology used has been rigorous review of articles in credible peer reviewed journals, conference papers, books, chapters, theses and dissertations, research projects and the internet. The data gathered thus has been synthesized, correlated and conclusions drawn. The study established that Africa is currently precariously positioned in knowledge society despite a glamorous past. When favourably rated, the continent contributes only 2% of global research. Its expenditure in this important area constitutes only 1.3 % of that of the whole world.  It is therefore not surprising that of the patents globally registered, Africa’s share is a mere 0.1%. Additionally, in comparison to the UK, USA and the other developed western economies who boast of 4,000 researchers per one million of their population, Africa has 198 researchers for a similar number of people. The research findings add to the stock of knowledge, and will among other benefits, help policy makers, funders and implementers appreciate the enormity of the task before them. It is also a contribution, albeit a token, to improving Africa’s position in knowledge society

The purpose of this study was to identify predictors associated with the length of stay in patients prematurely discharged from residential addiction treatment facilities in the United States.  This study sought to provide a more in-depth understanding regarding which patients may be at a greater risk for a shortened length of stay and to help fill the gap in the literature pertaining to the length of stay and related variables in prematurely discharged patients.  The research methodology for this study was a quantitative, non-experimental design using pre-existing, secondary data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administrations Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharge (TEDS-D) from the year 2019.  The Treatment Episode Data Set-Discharge is a collection of data reported on a national level regarding discharges from substance abuse treatment facilities. Data analysis included an examination of the relationship between the predictor variables, the number of times a patient has been admitted to treatment, admission wait time, gender, and age, with the criterion variable, length of stay for an N = 49080.  The data was ex post facto; therefore, this was a non-experimental design that utilized secondary analyses of pre-existing data to answer the research questions.  A significant relationship was discovered to exist between the criterion/dependent variable, length of stay, predictor/independent variables days waiting for admission, the number of prior treatment episodes, and gender.  When controlling for days waiting to include only those waiting one or more days for treatment admission, a subsequent significant relationship was found.  This study examined variables that serve as predictive of length of stay in patients who were prematurely discharged from residential addiction treatment facilities under the premise of having been administratively discharged or in the event that the patient left treatment against professional advice. &nbsp

    Get PDF
Background: Nutritional problems in adolescents are characterized by overweight or obesity. Being overweight is affected by an imbalance in nutrient intake and physical activity in adolescents. Purpose: This study aims to determine differences in nutrient intake and physical activity on nutritional status in adolescents. Methods: This type of research uses a cross-sectional design. Subjects were 94 students with a purposive sampling technique with a sample of 94 students. Collecting data on nutritional intake using food 2x24 hour recall and physical activity was measured using Adolescent Physical Activity Questionnaire (APAQ). Analysis of statistical data using the Independent Sample Test and the Mann -Whitney Test. Results: The results showed that there was a meaningful difference in nutritional intake (protein, carbohydrates, fiber) between normal nutritional status and more nutritional status in adolescents with value (p<0.05), but there was no meaningful difference in nutritional intake (energy, fat) and physical activity between normal nutritional status and more nutritional status in adolescents with value (p> 0.05). Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is a difference in the intake of nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and fiber) to the nutritional status in adolescents. Furthermore, there was no difference in nutritional intake (energy and fat) and physical activity to nutritional status in adolescents. Adolescents should pay attention to nutritional status early by paying attention to nutritional intake through diet and still doing physical activity to avoid nutritional problems that will impact non-communicable diseases

Rationale use of drugs increases the quality of health care, ensures cost effectiveness in health care delivery and better therapeutic outcomes. It however remains a problem in most parts of the world especially in the developing nations. This study was carried out to describe the pattern of drug utilization in a Nigerian Urban Tertiary Health Care Facility and evaluate the quality of prescriptions. This was a cross sectional study of all prescriptions received at the Pharmacy Department of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria for the month of November, 2013. All prescriptions were analyzed for some standard indices of rationale prescription. Descriptive Statistics were done using SPSS version 17.0. There were 7,516 encounters with a total of 14,794 drugs prescribed. The mean number of drugs per encounter was 2.3+1.4 drugs. Practically all classes of drugs were represented with Antibiotics being the most prescribed (26.2%), followed by Analgesics (19.4%) and Antihypertensive drugs (10.4%) respectively. Only 47.8% drugs were prescribed using generic name while there were 25% encounters with injections. The percentage prescription from the Essential Medicines Lists of the hospital was 27.9%. There were deficiencies in the quality of drug prescriptions studied as well as indices of irrational use of medicines among the prescribers. Appropriate measures needs be identified and implemented to improve on the use of medicine

    Get PDF
Background And Objective: Late-onset neonatal sepsis frequently complicates prematurity, contributing to morbidity and mortality. Probiotics may reduce necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in preterm infants, with unclear effect on late-onset sepsis. This study aimed to determine the effect of administering a specific combination of probiotics in reducing the incidence of late onset neonatal sepsis in preterm infants. Methods: This is a prospective single center, double-blinded, placebo controlled, randomized trial compared daily administration of a probiotic with a placebo. Each probiotic capsule contains (500 mg blend)- Lactobacillus acidophilus- 2 billion cfu, Lactobacillus bulgaricus- 1 billion cfu, Bifidobacterium bifidum-1 billion cfu, Fructo-Oligosaccharide- 100 mg and each placebo capsule contains (500 mg blend) Pregelatinised Starch (Starch-1500). Infants born <35 completed weeks, weighing <2000 g admitted in NICU are included in this study. The primary outcome was at least 1 episode of late-onset sepsis. Secondary outcomes include: feeding intolerance, mortality, time to establish full enteral feeds, days required to physiological weight gain, patent ductus arteriosus, intraventricular hemorrhage, retinopathy of prematurity, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, duration of hospital stay. Results: Between 2019 and 2021, 119 preterm infants from NICU, BSMMU were randomized. Rates of definite late-onset sepsis (35.6 %), rates of LONS (definite and clinical) (44.1 %), mortality (13.6 %), feeding intolerance (11.9 %) were statistically significant low in probiotics group than the placebo group. There is more hospital stay, more days to reach full enteral feeds and less weight gain in placebo group and it is statistically significant. Conclusions: This randomized, double blinded, placebo controlled trial has power to demonstrate clinically significant effects of the chosen probiotic mixture on the rate of late-onset sepsis in LBW infants. A large clinical trial is required to address outstanding issues regarding safety and efficacy in this vulnerable population

    Get PDF
Background: Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are the commonest infections described among diabetes mellitus patients. More often, empirical antimicrobial therapy is initiated before the laboratory results are made available with minimal treatment success. The knowledge of etiology and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of the organisms causing urinary tract infections among diabetes mellitus patients remains scarce, despite its vitality. This study sought to determine the prevalence, bacteria species and drug susceptibility patterns of common causes of urinary tract infections among diabetes mellitus patients attending Bosaso health centers. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross sectional study involving adult diabetic patients at Bosaso health centers between the months of May and July 2020. Laboratory assay of mid-stream urine samples was done to isolate bacteria causes of UTIs. These were biochemically identified using Gram stain, Kligler iron agar (KIA), Indole test, citrate, urea, coagulase, catalase, motility agar and lysine iron agar. Their antibiotic susceptibility pattern for the isolated organisms was done for Ampicillinn 10?g, Ciprofloxacin 5?g, Cotrimoxazole 25?g, Gentamycin 10?g, Ceftriaxone 10?g, and determined using Kirby Bauer Disc Diffusion method. Results: Of 177 participants, 69 (39.0%) were males and 108 (61.0%) were females. Their mean age was 33.1 years (range; 18-67 years) . Of these, 14.7% (26/177) of the samples revealed significant growth (>= 105 CFU/mL) giving a prevalence of 14.9 % (95% CI: 10.6 to 16.3). The organisms isolated were Escherichia coli -50% (N=13), Klebsiella pneumoniae 30.8% (N=8), Staphylococcus aureus 15.4% (N=4) and un identified organism 3.8% (N=1), and these were associated with such socio-demographic factors like history of catheterization and sexual activity. Antibiotic susceptibility to the commonly used agents for treating UTI’s indicated higher sensitivity to Gentamicin and Ceftriaxone

The Pipol Konek project of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is the department’s flagship Free Wi-Fi for public places project. Pipol Konek aims to bring a reliable, ubiquitous Internet access to more Filipinos through Wi-Fi access in most public spots, including schools, parks, public transportation, and the likes. Having only started in 2012, there is a lot to be desired in terms of assessing Pipol Konek’s internet access; and from a Communications standpoint, its appeal and utility to the Filipinos. Utilizing Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory, the study assessed the Pipol Konek as an innovation and the perception of the utilizing public as an innovation. It determined the utilization practices of Metro Manila users on Pipol Konek and its perceived attributes of innovation; i.e.: relative advantage, complexity, compatibility, trialability, and observability. Meanwhile, aspects of utilization such as awareness, frequency of usage, reasons for usage, location preferences, time preferences, devices used, likelihood of repeated use, reasons for disuse, and sources of information on Pipol Konek. A survey instrument was developed and validated for the purposes of the study. Relationships were also studied between demographic characteristics of gender, age, profession, civil status, and the perceived attributes of innovation. Findings revealed that most respondents claimed to use Pipol Konek once in a day during the mid-day and afternoon through their smartphones to connect to their friends and family. They had also responded strongly to the perceived attributes of innovation on Pipol Konek, thereby viewing Pipol Konek as a positive innovation. In terms of relationships between demographic characteristics and perceived attributes of innovation, there were variances in the correlation of aspects. The implications of these results and recommendations are henceforth, placed in the paper
