Bisphenol A is an endocrine disruptor which is almost ubiquitous. It is found in plastics, supermarket thermal receipts, CDs, food containers, water bottles, building materials amongst others. Bisphenol A has being associated with serious health issues ranging from obesity to cancer. This study aimed at developing an electrochemical method for the detection of bisphenol A in the environment. Horse radish peroxidase enzyme encapsulated on a modified polyaniline graphite carbon paste electrode was the recognition system. All electrochemical experiments were done on the cyclic voltammetric mode. The conducting properties of the polyaniline- Polyaniline 2, 2’-Azinobis [3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid] polymer composites were carried out using UV-Vis spetrophotometry. The presence of polaron and bipolaron bands in the UV-Vis spectra at around 446 nm and or greater than 650 nm indicated improved polymer conductivity. Preliminary results for the HRP/H2O2 system displayed a 1.54 x10-4 peak current signal de-attenuation on addition of cumulative aliquots of 0 – 2500 nM. The greater than 90% signal de-attenuation was due to presence of BPA provided- a basis for creating a BPA detection methodology based on inhibition in future studies

Many individual and social factors influence the appearance and persistence of acts of delinquency. Several clusters of factors concerning delinquency in general and recidivism in particular have thus been identified: criminal history, psychological, psychiatric and somatic diagnoses, socio-demographic characteristics, family situation and dynamics and the influence of social groups. The objective of this study is to identify the factors behind the recidivism of minors detained in the Special Quarter for Minors of the Daloa House of Arrest and Correction during detention. It is based on quantitative and qualitative data collected on the basis of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that the recidivism of incarcerated minors is linked to different cognitive and psycho-sociological factors due to the poor quality of institutional care. This study makes it possible to scientifically understand that the treatment of minors detained by the justice of youth protection in Daloa, has the difficulty of finding appropriate strategies and in line with the realities of adolescents on the margins of society

    Get PDF
Background: Adiponectin is a protein hormone whose levels have been found to correlate with glycaemic control and lipid profile in patients with Type 2 DM. This study evaluates the relationship of adiponectin in Obese and non - obese Nigerian T2DM patients. Method: This cross-sectional hospital-based study included two groups of 60 Obese T2DM and 60 non-obese T2DM subjects. All study participants had clinical assessment, and blood samples collected and assessed  for serum Adiponectin, fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein. Results: Obese T2DM subjects had lower levels of adiponectin than Non-obese T2DM subjects (p > 0.05). In both groups, 65% and 77% of the Obese non-Obese diabetic group had good glycemic status, which poorly correlated with serum adiponectin levels, with higher adiponectin values seen in the groups with poorly controlled glycemic status. High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels correlated positively with serum Adiponectin levels in both Obese and non-Obese diabetic groups, however this was significant only in the Obese diabetic group (r = 0.30, p = 0.02). Adiponectin correlated negatively with Triglycerides only in the non-Obese diabetic group (r = -0.12, p = 0.37), and also correlated negatively with atherogenic index (r = -0.092, p = 0.316), though not statistically significant. Conclusion: Adiponectin  is a poor marker for glycaemic control, and does not correlate with lipids such as TG, through its anti-atherogenic properties it may be associated with reduced risk of atherosclerosis as evidenced by its weakly positive and direct correlation with HDL among Nigerian Type 2 DM subjects

The Freudian Otherness/Unhomeliness in Asian- Canadian Narratives

    Get PDF
The present paper deals with the (im)possibilities of belonging within the melancholic Asian-Canadian narratives written by Joy Kogawa, Gurjinder Basran and Hiromi Goto. As is argued by Homi Bhabha, “[T]he ‘unhomely’ does provide a ‘non-continuist’ problematic that dramatizes–in the figure of woman–the ambivalent structure of the civil State as it draws its rather paradoxical boundary between the private and the public spheres. […], for Freud, the unheimlich is ‘the name for everything that ought to have remained […] secret and hidden but has come to light’” [1:10]. Between the “unheimlich” of Freud and the “unhomely” of Bhabha lies the ambivalent in-betweenness of Asian-Canadian minorities whose sense of relocation of the home justifies their “unhomeliness” as diasporic identities. In her special way, Goto explains this point through the female character of Naoe, in Chorus of Mushrooms, as follows: “You cannot move to a foreign land and call that place home because you parrot the words around you. Find your home inside yourself first, I say. Let your home words grow out from the inside, not the outside in” [2:48]

Sentiment Analysis and Topic Modeling Study: The Comparison of Cosmetics Product Online Reviews

    Get PDF
In the competition, companies must orient themselves to serve clients, engage with rivals, and launch products to build a dynamic and competitive corporate environment. The need to meet basic requirements such as clothes, food, and boards, which were formerly straightforward, became increasingly complicated. This can be proven by the development of the cosmetic industry which is marked by the variety of cosmetics on the market. There is currently a need for brand comparison in the business competition since it can make it simpler to understand the strengths and weaknesses of rival companies and serve as a model for enhancing the quality of well-liked items and marketplaces. Indonesia is a very attractive cosmetic market where cosmetic sales data are consistently rising from year to year. Due to the rapid advancement of information technology, buyers now write reviews on social media in addition to conducting online shopping. These online reviews can be helpful for comprehending the shopping process and discussing a product, and affect the customer\u27s plans to make additional purchases in the future. This study compared customer perception of three cosmetics products: powder foundation products from local brands that are Make Over Powerstay Matte Powder Foundation, ESQA Flawless Powder Foundation, and Luxcrime Blur&Cover Two Way Cake, using an online review that was extracted and scraped from a website through the Octoparse Windows program version 8.5.0. This study uses sentiment analysis and topic modeling to compare online reviews of customer perceptions of the three cosmetic products. The result shows the sentiment comparison among three cosmetics brands. The first position is the ESQA brand, followed by the Luxcrime brand, and the last rank is Make Over, with the smallest positive sentiment. The positive brand topics of the three products, in general, are about formulas that are long-lasting and have good coverage, while the negative brand topics, in general, are about formulas that must be reused and transferred when wearing masks

Sexuality and Zen Buddhism in Ikkyu Sojun’s Poetry

    Get PDF
This study examined the portrayal of sex and Zen Buddhism in the poetry of Ikkyu Sojun. More specifically, it examined (1) how sex was depicted in his poems; (2) how Zen Buddhism and sex were connected in his poems, and (3) what other unorthodox ways were evident in the poems. To determine these, the paper employed the formalistic critical theory known as New Criticism and Textual Analysis. New Criticism accentuates the importance of close reading. That is, examining a text closely without the use of external evidence to explain the work. Textual analysis, on the other hand, is a methodology that involves understanding language, symbols, and/or pictures present in texts to gain information regarding how people make sense of and communicate life and life experiences. The findings reveal that sex is depicted to be as natural as breathing, which means that it is a necessary component of life. It is portrayed to be fruitful because it bears a life, making a human being immortal. It is a message of truth that other Zen masters refuse to understand, and it is better than a hundred thousand years of meditation, contemplation, and reflection. If one wants to realize the Buddha nature in him then he must accept and embrace his human nature. Sex is also depicted to be a paradise, “a celestial garden,” and a platform for meditation. Masturbation is natural, and a female’s private part is something human beings can get lost in, the origin of all Buddhas. Sex is also portrayed to cause pain if a person becomes attached to it, but it also brings forth joy and gentleness of thoughts. Most importantly, sex is a source of Zen. By enjoying sex, one is also tasting life. It is intimate, beautiful, a “love pact” between lovers, and something that can make an old man feel young again. As for the connection between Zen and sex, findings reveal that enlightenment is manifest in many ways, which means that sex is one these countless of ways, a path to spiritual awakening. To break it is to go against the nature of Zen. Sex is also a way of meditation, a platform which can cause a man to shun fame and fortune. Most importantly, sex is the act of perceiving and accepting the nature of things, embracing being human, and merging with the universe. It is essential to being a Zen master. As for other unorthodox ways reflected in the poems, findings reveal that Ikkyu is unafraid to break religious taboos and spiritual conventions. He unabashedly calls and proclaims himself to be “Crazy Cloud,” “Blind Donkey,” and “Master of Love.” He is blatant in speaking openly about his love of sexual acts, having a lover, and mocking other Zen priests for failing to appreciate and understand the “truth” about sex. Lastly, he declares proudly that he is “tangled in red thread.” The red thread is that which indicates humanness. Thus, by saying that he is tangled in it, he is declaring that he is tied to his bodily pleasures. He is proud of it because one cannot realize his buddha nature by not accepting his human nature. To understand human nature is to experience it

Significance of Serum Prostate Specific Antigen with Histopathological Grading in Men with Prostate adenocarcinoma at Makassar, Indonesia

Prostate adenocarcinoma is the second most common malignancy in men after lung cancer worldwide. In Makassar, South Sulawesi, prostate adenocarcinoma cases increased significantly, from 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively, the cases reached 31, 43 and 51 cases. Although not specific, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is the first-line test in the screening of prostate adenocarcinoma. Gleason grading is one of the most powerful predictors of biological behavior and when combined PSA with Gleason score and clinical stage. It improves the prediction of the pathological stage for prostate carcinoma. The aim of this study was to determine the association between serum PSA concentration and the new (2016 modified) This was a retrospective study of the correlation between age of patients, serum PSA and grade group of Gleason score of patients diagnosed as Prostate Adenocarcinoma with HE staining at Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University. The age of patients and  the serum PSA values  were retrieved from  laboratory files. Histological slides of appropriate cases were reviewed to confirm the Gleason score and group grade. There were 27 cases fulfilled criteria, from September 2020 to November 2021. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis to look for associations and correlations serum PSA and group grade of prostate adenocarcinoma. This study showed that there was a significant correlation between serum PSA level with histopathological grading based on Gleason score of prostate adenocarcinoma (p<0,05)

The Monoclonal Antibody Cocktail in SARS-CoV 2: A Bonanza for Patients With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia?

    Get PDF
Monoclonal antibody cocktail is currently one of the most promising approaches being studied in the management of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2). We present a case of an elderly patient with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) who had recurrent episodes of desaturation and admission in intensive care unit (ICU) despite receiving the treatment for moderate to severe COVID-19. After careful selection, weighing the benefits and risks, the patient was started on the combination of the two monoclonal antibodies, casirivimab and imdevimab. The results suggest that this could be a game changer in COVID-19 with a focused approach of management of COVID-19 positive patients especially in the vulnerable population

Prevalence of Learning Difficulties with Dyslexia in Higher Education Students

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to shed light to learning difficulties in higher education students. More precisely, to understand the prevalence of these learning difficulties in students. Through literature and research, both domestic and international, this research incorporates the factology and decomposes it in the best possible way from a professional point of view. The research is quantitative, has an analytical and comparative approach. It was realized in 10 Universities of the Republic of Kosovo. As a random sample there are 200 professors of these universities, whose opinion has been decisive for this research. Data collection was carried out through a quantitative approach, while the measuring instrument is the questionnaire for professors, which was taken from (NCLD, 2017) authors of which after conducting their research provided that 15 million students, adolescents, and adults with learning difficulties can be successful in university, work and in life. The data was analyzed through the program SPSS v.22 and through these analyzes the correlation between the learning difficulties and the professional training of professors in this aspect was seen. Data analysis was performed through three tests, respectively correlation test, Hi2 test as well as factor analysis, tests that have led us to the conclusion that learning difficulties are present in university students in Kosovo. The assumption that professors do not have sufficient preparation to deal with students with such difficulties has been refuted as professors have proven otherwise. Dyslexia and dysgraphia are the most common difficulties encountered in university students, but even dyscalculia and dyspraxia do not lag behind. During the analysis, another variable found which has not been the subject of study, is that such difficulties significantly affect the performance of students in the classroom. The combination of all reduces the motivation of students for work
