Somatic indices and nutritional composition of the roe of the native fish Dormitator latifrons
Objective: To evaluate some reproductive aspects of D. latifrons and the nutritional quality of its eggs.
Design/methods/approach: Eighty-two fish were randomly collected (August 2021), and their sex, length, weight, somatic indices, Fulton condition index (K), proximate composition, and amino acid and lipid composition (fatty acids) of the gonads were determined.
Results: Of the total specimens collected, 62% were females; length and weight values were higher in males, but their gonadosomatic index (GSI) was lower than in females. Somatic indices did not show differences between different weight ranges. In the roe of D. latifrons, the average proximate composition was 24.3% protein and 8.5% lipids. The most abundant essential amino acids were leucine and lysine. Linoleic acid (C18:2n6) was the fatty acid with the highest concentration.
Limitations/implications: It is necessary to complement the analysis of the amino acid and fatty acid profile of the roe in wild organisms to relate the changes caused by balanced feed.
Findings/conclusions: This study shows that the D. latifrons roe is a good source of amino acids and PUFA.

Coverage changes of pine trees at risk in collection sites in northern Mexico
Objective: Analyze changes in land use and vegetation (USyV; from 1985 to 2014) in the collection sites of 16 pines listed in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 located in northern Mexico.
Design/methodology/approach: We integrate a georeferenced database of the species under study from consultations of botanical collections. A point coverage was created to add USyV vector information from Series I (1985) and VI (2014). Subsequently, spatial analysis and geoprocessing identified class changes during the period.
Results: A total of 2,242 georeferenced records of pine species were obtained. The results indicated that 50.0 % of the total number of pine records consulted in collections with Series I information are in other USyV categories than primary forest. At the same time, with Series VI, this condition rises to 58.7 %. Consequently, the most critical changes in the period under study occurred in converting primary forests to agriculture, pasture, secondary vegetation of coniferous and oak forests, and urban areas.
Limitations/implications: The availability of larger scale cartographic material, to generate a risk analysis study of changes and threats to the conservation of pine species.
Findings/conclusions: The number of collection sites recorded in primary coniferous, scrub, and oak forests in Series I decreased significantly compared to Series VI, shifting to agriculture, water bodies, grassland, and urban areas.Objective: To analyze the changes in land-use and vegetation (LUV), from 1985 to 2014, in the sites in northern Mexico where 16 pine trees listed in the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 are collected.
Design/Methodology/Approach: Based on consultations in botanical collections, a georeferenced database of the species under study was developed. A point coverage was created to which LUV vector information from Series I (1985) and VI (2014) was added. Subsequently, LUV class changes were identified during the evaluation period through spatial analysis and geoprocessing.

Fifty percent of the pine records consulted in collections with Series I information belong to other non-primary forest categories of LUV, while with Series VI information with this condition rose to 58.7%. Consequently, in the study period major changes occurred in the conversion of primary forests to agricultural lands, pasture, secondary vegetation in coniferous and oak forests, and mainly urban areas.
Limitations/Implications: The availability of larger-scale cartographic material limited the generation of a risk analysis study about the changes and threats to forest conservation.
Findings/Conclusions: The number of collection sites registered in coniferous forest, scrubland, and primary oak forest in Series I —which are now agricultural lands, water bodies, pastures, and urban areas— was significantly lower than in Series VI
Technological proposal for a greater irrigated corn (Zea mays L.) pro-duction
Objective: Validate the experimental results of irrigated maize production of the Autumn-Winter cycles from the years 2019 to 2022.
Design/methodology/approach: Establishment of six validation plots, three in the Cuxtepeques Irrigation District and three in Irrigation Units.
Results: The production of corn grain is up to 64% higher with the INIFAP technology compared to the traditional one; however, the average yield obtained in the validation phase was 11.5 t ha-1 compared to 15.9 t ha-1 in the experimental phase.
Limitations on study/implications:
Findings/conclusions: It is necessary to have machinery for precision planting and fertilization, efficient irrigation infrastructure, access to credit and permanent technical assistance to achieve yields similar to those obtained experimentally.

Objective: To validate the experimental results of corn (Zea mays L.) production under irrigation during the 2019-2022 autumn-winter cycles.
Design/Methodology/Approach: Six validation plots were established, three in the Cuxtepeques irrigation district and three in irrigation systems in Chiapas, Mexico.

Consumer willingness to pay for vanilla using contingent valuation analysis
Objective: to show the willingness to pay a premium for vanilla from the Totonacapan region through contingent valuation for the strengthening of vanilla in the local market.
Design/methodology/approximation: to estimate the WTP, the so-called contingent valuation methodology (CV) was followed. Based on consumer surveys in the Totonacapan region. The analysis of the information was carried out by the XLSTAT 2019 software through logistic regression from the willingness to pay data in a binary response with a confidence interval of 95% and with 100 iterations and the maximization of the function of likelihood with the Newton-Raphson algorithm.
Results: indicate that 55.63% of consumers agree that certification increases the potential to pay a premium; the accessibility of vanilla is important for 66.56% of consumers; previous experience with brands and product behavior is paramount for 56.95% of all consumers; regarding the origin of vanilla, it is important for 65.23% of consumers. Findings/conclusions: production by small local producers is an appreciated quality because it is related to the symbolic dimension and is appreciated by 68.54% of consumers.Objective: To show the willingness to pay a premium for vanilla from the Totonacapan region through contingent valuation analysis for the strengthening of vanilla in the local market.

Embryonic losses between the early diagnosis and the confirmation of gestation in dairy cows from different farms for one year
ABSTRACT
Objective: To analyze embryonic losses between early pregnancy diagnosis and confirmation in dairy cows of different farms for one year.
Design/methodology/approach: Total of 3,413 Holstein milking cows stabled from three different farms were studied. Cows were milked 3 times a day and they had an average daily milk production of 36.5 ± 1.5 L. The diagnosis of pregnancy was made by ultrasonography at 34 ± 7 days post-artificial insemination and confirmation at 60 ± 5 days. Mean embryonic losses were compared with respect to farm and month.
Results: Average embryonic losses were 18.8%. No effect was observed in month factor, nor in month x farm interaction in the embryonic loss percentage (p < 0.05). Factor farm showed differences (p < 0.05), embryonic loss percentages for farms 1, 2 and 3 were: 4 ± 1.6%, 11.4 ± 1.6%, y 22.9 ± 1.6%, respectively.
Limitations on study/implications: Cow management was similar therefore no detailed differences between farms were studied. It is important to keep records of embryonic losses as they can have a significant impact on the farm.
Findings/conclusions: There is a high variability of embryonic losses between the diagnosis of early pregnancy and the confirmation between the stables and this may be due to differences in management since the breed and environmental conditions were the same in the three stables.Objective: To determine embryonic losses between the early diagnosis and the confirmation of gestation in dairy cows from different barns for one year.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A total of 3,413 confined Holstein cows from three different dairy barns in the Mexican Altiplano (highlands) were studied. Cows were milked three times a day with an average daily production of 36.5 ± 1.5 L. Gestation diagnosis was performed by ultrasonography at 34 ± 7 d after the artificial insemination, while gestation was confirmed at 60 ± 5 d. Average pregnancy loss was determined and embryonic losses were compared taking into account barn and month.
Results: The overall average of embryonic losses was 18.8%. Neither the month factor nor the month × barn interaction affected the percentage of embryonic losses (p<0.05). Differences per barn (p<0.05) were observed and barns 1, 2, and 3 recorded losses percentages of 4 ± 1.6 %, 11.4 ± 1.6 %, and 22.9 ± 1.6%, respectively.
Study Limitations/Implications: Detailed differences between barns were not studied, since cow management was similar in all three of them. Embryonic losses must be recorded, given their significant impact on the barn.
Findings/Conclusions: There is a high variability among barns regarding embryonic losses between the early diagnosis and the confirmation of gestation. This situation may be the result of management differences, since the breed and environmental conditions were the same in all three barns
Increase of the motility of buck semen with Andromed® extender and the addition of HTF
Objective: To test whether HTF (Human Tubal Fluid) is capable of protecting goat sperm cells increasing the semen m
Objective: To determine if HTF (Human Tubal Fluid) can protect buck sperm cells, increasing semen motility when used by itself or combined with the Andromed® commercial extender.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The semen of eight bucks of the Boer breed was used (10 ejaculates per male). Each ejaculate was diluted in three treatments (5 repetitions per treatment): 1) only Andromed®; 2) only HTF; and 3) Andromed® + HTF. The following variables were evaluated: mass motility (MM) and progressive motility (MP) in fresh (37 °C) and refrigerated (5 °C) semen. The differences between treatments were detected, based on the MM and MP in fresh and refrigerated semen variables, using the GLM procedure (SAS V9). In the case of the MM evaluated in three different periods, the measures repeated over time were analyzed using the Proc Mixed procedure (SAS V9).
Results: Regarding the quality of fresh spermatozoa, MM and MP recorded similar values (p>0.05) for the three treatments. On the one hand, MM registered 97.1% for Andromed®, 95.8% for HTF, and 97.5% for Andromed® + HTF; its highest value was achieved with the Andromed® + HTF combination, followed by Andromed® and HTF. On the other hand, the highest MP percentage was observed with the combination of Andromed® + HTF (91.0%), followed by Andromed® (90.4%), and HTF (89.0%). Regarding the quality of the sperm refrigerated at 5 °C, the combination of Andromed® + HTF had a higher MP value (p<0.05) than other treatments.
Study Limitations/Implications: In all the evaluated treatments, the motility of sperm decreased over time (0 to 24 hours after cooling); however, the treatments with Andromed®, and Andromed®+HTF maintained a high motility.
Findings/Conclusions: The combination of Andromed® and HTF can be used to dilute both fresh and cooled semen
Yield of Popcorn varieties in different population densities in the Valles Altos region of Mexico: Yield of maize popcorn varieties
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the grain productivity of four varieties of popcorn maize (palomero UNAM, Puma Palomero, Palomero Oro, and Palomero Unamita) under three population densities.
Design/methodology/approach: During the 2020 spring-summer agricultural cycle, the four varieties were evaluated in two different environments, using three population densities: 50,000, 65,000 and 80,000 plants ha-1. The experimental design
employed was a completely randomized block design, with a factorial arrangement and four replications.
Results: The results showed that the population densities of 65 and 80 plants per hectare were statistically similar, with yields of 6,340 and 6,357 kg ha-1 respectively, but significantly different from the density of 50,000 plants ha-1. Regarding the varieties, Palomero Unamita and Palomero Oro exhibited yields of 6,809 and 6,625 kg ha-1 respectively, which were significantly different from the other two varieties.
Limitations of the study/implications: It is important to note that further evaluation of these varieties in different years and environments is needed to obtain more robust and generalizable results.
Findings/conclusions: Based on the results obtained regarding yield, yield components, and outstanding vegetative characteristics, it can be concluded that there is a favorable perspective for the commercial use of the evaluated popcorn maize varieties in this study.

Objetivo: el objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la productividad de grano de cuatro variedades de maíz palomero (palomero UNAM, Puma Palomero, Palomero Oro y Palomero Unamita) bajo tres densidades de población.
Diseño/metodología/enfoque: durante el ciclo agrícola primavera-verano de 2020, se evaluaron las cuatro variedades en dos ambientes diferentes y se utilizaron tres densidades de población: 50,
65 y 80 mil plantas por hectárea. El diseño experimental utilizado fue de bloques completamente al azar, con un arreglo factorial y cuatro repeticiones.
Resultados: los resultados mostraron que las densidades de población de 65 y 80 plantas ha-1 fueron estadísticamente similares, con rendimientos de 6,340 y 6,357 kg ha-1, pero difirieron significativamente de la densidad de 50 mil plantas por hectárea. En cuanto a las variedades, Palomero Unamita y Palomero Oro mostraron rendimientos de 6,809 y 6,625 kg ha-1.
Limitaciones del estudio/implicaciones: es importante señalar que se requiere continuar evaluando estas variedades en diferentes años y ambientes para obtener resultados más sólidos y generalizables.
Hallazgos/conclusiones: con base en los resultados obtenidos en cuanto al rendimiento, componentes de rendimiento y características vegetativas sobresalientes, se puede concluir que existe una perspectiva favorable para el uso comercial de las variedades palomeras de maíz evaluadas en este estudio.

Study limitations/ Implications: it is important to note that is necessary to continue the evaluation of these varieties in different years and environments to obtain more solid and generalizable results.
Findings/ Conclusions: based on the results obtained in terms of yield, yield components and outstanding vegetative traits, it can be concluded that there are favorable perspectives for the commercial use of the popcorn varieties evaluated in this study
Effect of silicon and humic substances on the productivity and absorption of minerals in cucumber
Objective: This work is to evaluate the effect of potassium silicate and humic substances to mitigate salt stress in cucumber grown in greenhouse.
Design/methodology/approach: The design that was used was a completely randomized with factorial arrangement. The first factor is the varieties of cucumber (Var); Induran (I) and SV2516 (SV), the second factor is potassium silicate (Si) with doses 0, 10, 20 mL·L-1 and the third factor is humic substances (SH) with doses 0, 10, 20 kg / ha.
Results: The results showed that the best interaction was SV * SH20 for the NFP and Rend variables. In the fruit content of N and Ca it was I * SH10 and in K and P it was SV * Si20, for the rest of the minerals such as Mg, Fe and Cu the interactions that stood out were SV * Si10, SV * Si20 and I * Si10 respectively. The best interaction in sheet mineral content was I * SH20 in N, SV * SH10 for P and K, and SV * Si20 for Cu.
Study limitations/implications: There was no significant difference in Ca, Mg and Fe minerals in leaf.
Findings/conclusions: At least one of the interactions of cultivars and doses of biostimulants favored agronomic variables, quality and mineral absorption in fruit.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of potassium silicate and humic substances in the mitigation of salt stress in cucumber grown in a greenhouse.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A completely randomized design with factorial arrangement was used. The first factor was the cucumber varieties (Var): Induran (I) and SV2516 (SV). The second factor was potassium silicate (Si), with doses of 0, 10, and 20 mL·L-1. The third factor was humic substances (SH), with doses of 0, 10, and 20 kg/ha.
Results: The best interaction for the NFP and Y variables was SV*SH20. The N and Ca content in the fruit was I*SH10, while the K and P content was SV*Si20. Meanwhile, Mg, Fe, and Cu interactions stood out with SV*Si10, SV*Si20, and I*Si10, respectively. The best interaction in leaf mineral content was I*SH20 (N), SV*SH10 (P and K), and SV*Si20 (Cu).
Study Limitations/Implications: There was no significant difference in Ca, Mg, and Fe in leaf.
Findings/Conclusions: At least one of the interactions between cultivars and bio stimulant doses favored agronomic traits, quality, and mineral absorption in fruit
Evaluation of fermentative activity of lactic cultures for dehydrated yogurt with the use of different additives
Objective: To evaluate the fermentative activity of dehydrated lactic cultures with the use of various additives and vacuum drying, using yogurt as a model system.
Design/methodology/approach: The yogurt was made with commercial lactic cultures (YF-L705 Yo-Flex CHR HANSEN) inoculated in whole milk incubated for 4 h/42°C. The yogurt was centrifuged at 6,000 rpm/15 min/4°C. The supernatant was removed, and the following additives were added to the precipitate: 1) SN, without additives, 2) Glycerol, 3) Calcium carbonate, 4) Yeast extract, 5) Glycerol and calcium carbonate, 6) Glycerol, calcium carbonate and yeast extract. The drying of 6 treatments was done up to 96h inside vacuum desiccators. Weight and moisture loss were recorded at 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96h. The dehydrated portions with the additives 1,2,3,4,5,6 was used as inoculums in milk for the production of yogurt; recording the drop in pH up to 24h and FTIR. As a control, non-dehydrated and lyophilized portion of yogurt were used.
Results: The drying time at constant weight was 3 days. Dehydrated cultures containing yeast extract and calcium carbonate are associated with faster milk fermentation activity (p ≤ 0.05). Yoghurts manufactured with fresh cultures take 4 hours to ferment, dehydrated ones take over 12 hours. Infrared spectra show that yogurts produced with fresh or dried strains are of similar qualities.
Study limitations/implications: The fermentative activity in dehydrated foods improves when alkalis are added, such as calcium carbonate, which is an antacid and releases CO2 upon contact with water and acid, stimulating anaerobiosis. Yogurt was centrifuged at 6,000 rpm/15 min/4 °C. The supernatant was eliminated and with the precipitate, 6 treatments were established by addition of additives: T1, Without additive, T2, Glycerol, T3, Calcium carbonate, T4, Yeast extract, T5, Glycerol, and T6, Glycerol, Calcium carbonate and Yeast extract; non-dehydrated and freeze-dried yogurt was used as control: T7 and T8, respectively. The precipitate of the treatments with additives was dehydrated in a silica gel in a desiccator and under vacuum conditions. The weight loss was recorded at 0, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. The precipitate with dehydrated additives was used as milk inoculates for yogurt elaboration. The change of pH was recorded at 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 24 h. With the pH and the fermentation time, a model was established to present the change curve in fermentation pH and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
Results: The drying time to constant weight was 3 days. The fermentation pH change curve was a Boltzman sigmoidal function and analysis of variance was conducted with its parameters to assess the different fermentation speeds of the different treatments. The dehydrated cultures with Yeast Extract and Calcium Carbonate are associated with a higher fermentation activity of the milk (p < 0.05). The yogurts manufactured with fresh cultures take 4 to 5 h to ferment and the dehydrated ones take more than 10 h. The infrared spectra showed that the quality of the yogurts produced with fresh or dry cultures are similar, which agrees with other studies.
Limitations on study/implications: The dehydrated inoculated with the additives can be used to make yogurt with similar quality as to when inoculate with fresh culture is used, with the disadvantage of the fermentation time being longer. It is possible that this methodology can be used to dehydrate other inoculates based on lactic bacteria, but their effectiveness would have to be assessed experimentally.
Findings/conclusions: This study shows an alternative method to dehydrate lactic bacteria in the laboratory with equipment of relatively easy access for any laborator
Adaptability of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) clones, introduced by exchange to southeastern Mexico.
ABSTRAC
Objetive: To evaluate sugarcane clones in the adaptability phase, and select those with higher yield in field and factory than commercial control clones.
Design/methodology/approach: 14 clones of sugarcane in the first cycle were evaluated. The experimental design consisted of randomized complete blocks with four replications. The following agricultural characteristics were evaluated: stem weight, population and yield; as well as the industrial characteristics: sucrose content, juice purity and theoretical sugar production. They were compared with the values of local clones MEX 69-290 and CP 72-2086 that served as controls.
Results: There were found statistical differences in agricultural and industrial characteristics between clones. In stem weight, clone LTMEX 94-02 was the heaviest. In population, clone Mex 95-35 was the one that presented the highest number of stems per ha. Regarding yield in the field, clone COLPOSCTMEX 09-1433 was the one that obtained significantly higher tonnage per hectare compared to the two control clones. Among the factory characteristics, the clone MEX 96-10 had a significantly higher concentration of sucrose and with the highest value in juice purity, and in theoretical sugar production. Clone COLPOSCTMEX 09-1433 presented the highest value of theorical sugar yield in comparison to the two control clones.
Limitation on study/implications: Although data from the new clones are relevant, they belong to an only one cycle.
Findings/conclusions: At least four clones evaluated showed high field and factory yields: COLPOSCTMEX 09-1433, LTMEX 94-02, MEX 95-59, and MOTZMEX 00-1192. In all four, field yield was statistically superior to that of the control MEX 69-290; thus, it is pertinent to continue with its evaluation and multiplication in the semi-commercial test phase. However, since they are introduced from other geographical regions, it is recommended to continue their evaluation under the environmental conditions of the region.Objective: To evaluate sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) clones in the adaptability phase and select those with high field and factory yields that significantly exceed the commercial control clones.Design/Methodology/Approach: Fourteen sugarcane clones were evaluated in a crop established for the first time and to which no cut has been made. The experimental design consisted of randomized complete blocks with four repetitions. The following agricultural characteristics were evaluated: stalk weight, population, and yield. The following industrial characteristics were likewise assessed: sucrose content, juice purity, and theoretical sugar production. Both values were compared with the values of the local clones MEX 69-290 and CP 72-2086 that were used as control.Results: Statistical differences were found in agricultural and industrial characteristics between clones. In terms of stalk weight, the LTMEX 94-02 clone stood out, while, in population terms, the Mex 95-35 clone recorded the highestnumber of stalks per ha. Regarding field yield, the COLPOSCTMEX 09-1433 clone obtained significantly higher tonnage per hectare than the two control clones. Among the factory characteristics, the MEX 96-10 clone stood out with a significantly higher concentration of sucrose and with the highest juice purity. Finally, the COLPOSCTMEX 09-1433 clone had the highest theoretical sugar production value, which was statistically superior to the two control clones.Study Limitations/Implications: The data were obtained from a crop establishedfor the first time.Findings/Conclusions: At least four clones showed high field and factory yields: COLPOSCTMEX 09-1433, LTMEX 94-02, MEX 95-59, and MOTZMEX 00-1192. All four showed a field performance that had better statistics than the control MEX 69-290; therefore, it would be appropriate to pursue its evaluation and multiplication during the semi-commercial test phase.
