The role of brick in the Late Antique architecture of the Central Balkan Roman provinces [predavanje po pozivu štampano u izvodu]
Complex research of late antique bricks from the area of today's Serbia, conducted at the beginning of the 21st century, included the analysis of this material from several archaeological sites, including the ancient Viminacium. The idea was to determine the similarities and deviations of bricks and brick construction techniques in the observed areas concerning the overall late antique architecture of ancient Rome. Therefore, extensive analyses of the literature and the results of previous research were conducted, in conjunction with fieldwork and laboratory testing of appropriate samples from the field.
The research indicated that construction techniques that were used in the area of today's Serbia in the time of late antiquity were completely in line with the way of building in the area of the Eastern Roman Empire. As a rule, they included the use of bricks, and most often it was the opus mixtum technique, performed in a manner of late antiquity, while in the case of smaller buildings, the opus testaceum technique could also be used.
The analyzed area had a specific role in the turbulent period of the invasion of barbarian tribes in the Eastern Roman Empire resulting that by the end of the 4th century the area was mostly devastated and depopulated. However, during the 6th century and the reign of Emperor Justinian, the area of northern Illyricum revived and gained strategic importance to preserve the northern borders of the Empire, so that some cities were revived, while completely new fortified settlements were built.
The new circumstances have contributed to the intensification of construction activities with noticeably more extensive use of brick and more frequent application of the opus testaceum technique on significantly larger buildings than was the case in the previous period of construction activity during the 4th century. At the same time, there is a certain change in the formats of bricks, which from the elongated rectangular formats that were typical of late antiquity in the observed areas, become closer in shape to the square. Visual observation of 6th-century bricks gives the impression of their poorer quality compared to 4th-century bricks.
Morphological, as well as physicochemical analyzes conducted on bricks of the 4th and 6th centuries from selected sites, give an initial picture of the quality of used bricks. The gained knowledge of the quality of the analyzed bricks in combination with their format and applied building technique becomes a good basis for a better understanding of the behavior of late antique buildings, but the real picture of this can be obtained in combination with similar research focussed on mortars that were applied
Small Shrinking Towns in the Post-Socialist Context of Development
The process of urban shrinkage is affecting many cities around the world. It is evident in small towns as well, but unlike larger cities, it has not received much attention. Accordingly, this paper analyses small towns’ shrinking focusing on post-socialist context of development, which led to new patterns of urban shrinkage in countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). After discussing the specific characteristics of the shrinkage of small towns, their paths of development in different CEE countries are analyzed, in order to highlight the characteristics of urban shrinkage and the influence of post-socialist transition on this process. Thereafter, the shrinkage of small towns in Serbia is analyzed in order to determine whether the identified characteristics are recognized in them and to single out the specifics of that process in relation to other post-socialist countries. Based on the general characteristics of the development and shrinkage of small towns in the CEE countries, it can be concluded that shrinking small towns are not equally represented in all countries, and there are certain differences in terms of dynamics and intensity of shrinkage. The results of the analysis indicate that the previous path of development had a strong influence on their shrinkage after the post-socialist transformation. Three general trajectories of socialist development have been singled out, which influenced different patterns of urban shrinkage. In Serbia, it has also been observed that the shrinkage of small towns is directly related to the unfavourable direction of the urbanization process during socialist development
Co-creation for Enhancing Quality of Public Spaces: Learning from Europe Readr Experience in Serbia
There is a rising concern in the architectural academic and professional community about the current transformation of cities and public spaces, seeking for (a) new and innovative approaches to planning and shaping future cities and habitats, and (b) a platform for experimentation and designing of innovative solutions to complex societal problems through co-creation. The paper aims to highlight the regenerative role that educational projects with a practical dimension could have on the public space and the community. The Europe Readr pavilion in Serbia has been developed in the cooperation of the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Belgrade and the Laboratory for urban morphology and typology (Morpho- Lab) of the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture within the broader international project EUROPE READR. Guided by European values, sustainability, and the European Green Deal through designing public spaces for the exchange of ideas and values, UBFA considered both the process of learning - and the result itself. Accordingly, the process implied multiple phases of project development that included two-stage student competition, three mentored workshops and presentations to project partners, and finally, implementation phase. The paper brings significant experiences regarding potentials and challenges in innovation, critical thinking, competence, co-creation, developing technical drawings, understanding of building and assembling techniques, public purchase regulations, and on-site activities. The project provided stepping out from academia bringing a positive change both to education and public space

The paper will present the review of the best practices on educating sustainability and heritage, specifically regarding mapping representation of (1) various scales in education, building practice and policy context in each country, and (2) scales across the consortium countries, aiming at identifying strengths connected to methods, materials and teaching experiences. The purpose of this initial phase is to support the participating Architectural Schools in establishing high-quality standards in the terms of sustainability of the built heritage, through cross-cultural communication and solving problems in an international environment. The paper will present the best practices on educating sustainability of heritage in different schools within European context, hence map (1) the relation of selected teaching courses, built projects and policies in regards to different scales – Landscape planning, Urban planning and design, and Architecture, Construction and Interior design, and (2) provide valuable insight for the context of Serbia regarding teaching and policy recommendations. Having in mind that majority of Serbian Network of Urban Morphology members are participating in this project, as well as the project leader, the special emphasis will be on the morphological perspective. The paper will highlight parallels of conditions and educational practices from different countries with the morphological tradition, observable through the existence of UM regional networks
Brownfield investments in Serbia with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and preserving the environment: case study
Metodološki pristup u ovom istraživanju podrazumeva izradu scenarija sanacije konkretnog industrijskog objekata prema čijim svojstvima su numeričkom simulacijom istraživane mogućnosti energetske sanacije i izvršena komparativna analiza dobijenih rezultata potrebne energije grejanja i hlađenja i smanjenje emisije CO2.This paper aims to point out the potential of Brownfield investments of the Republic of Serbia. Abandoned industrial plants and ruined complexes, usually located in parts of the city that were the core of development during the Industrial Revolution, in developed countries are not a mockery like ours, but very attractive places that breathe new life. The so-called Brownfield investments, which, in addition to reviving old buildings, also include the revitalization of polluted construction land, have been current in the world for about two decades. This paper examines the possibilities of adapting and reuse an industrial building in Novi Pazar into an office building, with the use of passive solar systems, with the aim of reducing CO2 emissions and environmental consequences. The energy characteristics of the building were obtained using the DesignBuilder software and the EnergyPlus simulation platform, taking into account the parameters of the required internal temperature and climate data for the Republic of Serbia. The methodological approach in this research implies the development of a scenario for the rehabilitation of a specific industrial facility according to whose properties the possibilities of energy rehabilitation were investigated by numerical simulation and a comparative analysis of the obtained results of required heating and cooling energy and CO2 reduction
Visions of Architecture in the Context of Environmental Aesthetics
Environmental aesthetics is one of the most impor- tant areas in the development of modern aesthetics. Today’s beliefs about the fragility of nature and the critical consequenc- es of human activity, primarily urbanization and pollution of the environment in which we live, have contributed to the growing awareness of the importance of preserving nature and its re- sources. Many sciences and disciplines, including architecture, conduct their research in accordance with the principles of sus- tainable development. Environmental aesthetics is based on the principles of sustainable development, considering all forms of environment: natural, built and social environment. Although the main topic of environmental aesthetics is the natural en- vironment, the research in this paper is primarily focused on architecture as a type of specific environment created by man. The aim of this paper is to consider the visions of architecture through critical examination of architectural theory and prac- tice in the context of environmental aesthetics, examining the relations of sensory experience of architecture, relations of ar- chitecture and theory, relations of architecture and other arts, as well as relations of architecture, science and technology. One of the key results of the paper refers to the critical and aesthetic observation of architecture, not from the usual angle of archi- tecture as a visual art, but from the point of view of the architec- tural and urban environment.
Theoretical consideration of architecture from the standpoint of environmental aesthetics is one of the most important chal- lenges nowadays, precisely because architecture today oc- cupies large areas of our planet given the constant growth of urbanization and urban development whose consequences re- quire architects and experts to provide humane and sustainable solutions which will preserve, protect, improve and maintain all types of environments: natural, urban and social. Environmental aesthetics today is one of the key cultural positions from which society, art, science and technology form a common language for a better and sustainable future
From Green Continuity to Social Integration : A Case Study on the Social Potential of Urban Greenery in Altstetten-Albisrieden Zurich
Urban greenery plays a significant role in urbanisation nowadays. Besides thermal comfort,
urban greenery's contribution to personal well-being and social well-being has been addressed in
a large body of research. This study focused on Zurich's urban greenery, specifically in the
Altstetten-Albisrieden district, at two scales. At the macro scale, green spaces were categorised
into three types, public green space, common green space and private green space, according to
their ownership and accessibility. The connections among these three green space types were
analysed in QGIS and indicated the significance of each public green space in the urban structure
of the whole district. Based on this analysis of the spatial connections, four subsite cases were
selected to further study their social potentials concerning green space structure and observed
space use activities at the micro-scale. In the end, the study concluded that public green spaces
should be planned considering location and size; green space structures could influence space use
activities and provide different social benefits regarding community integration. Some key factors
may include size, boundary and facilities provided in the green spaces.58th ISOCARP World Planning Congress : From Wealthy to Healthy Cities ; In Search of a New Planning Agenda for Urban Health, Socio-Spacial Justice and Climate Resilience, 21-22 September (online) and 3-6 October 2022, Brussels, Belgiu
Kuća i čovek unutar nove urbane ekologije
