Exo Case-Study and Prototype of the Dynamic Responsive Architectural System: The Key Attributes of Systemic Integration and Design – Part II

    No full text
As a part of the series of studies that have investigated different aspects of the Exo project and its arguments for the format and technical solution of the computed architecture-instrument, this paper focuses on main attributes and criteria that qualify this kind of architectural design for the categories of dynamic and kinetic responsive architectural systems, inquiring spatial and technological integration and design they claim. The concepts of these systems, theoretically presumed and practically tested in this project, have been contextualized within the wider field of research in this area (including relevant literature, comparative and referential examples), activating hereby interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary potentials for resolving critical issues of the desired and analyzed architectural format. By converging sentience (remote and close-up sensing), electronic integration, algorithmic (software) command-and-control and automation, smart or intelligent performance, kinetics, performativity, adaptability, responsiveness, and interaction in relation to the variable (dynamic) input parameters, Exo claims the status of the representative example of the argued and investigated system design. Since the first stage of the experiment (the proof of a concept) has left the full application of targeted attributes partly unresolved, their detailed analysis and critical observation will be provided and presented so as to refine and more precisely direct further prototyping and project development. In parallel, the particularity of this case will be led towards the universal set of principles within the aim of its wider application in different design situations.Further supplementary material including Glossary may be requested directly from the corresponding author https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.11503094 (All Rights Reserved

Prikazana studija analizira inovacije koncepcijskih i operativnih determinanti digitalnih prostornoinformacionih i prostornointeligentnih sistema i platformi na osnovu argumenata objavljenih u radu “Location intelligence dynamics and complexity: the questions of design strategy“.

Creating more sustainable social housing in Serbia: A conceptual framework for architectural and urban design

    No full text
The basic research problem is the insufficient application of sustainability criteria in urban and architectural programs and projects for social housing in post-socialist Serbia, which may lead to inadequate and low-quality new housing stock. This paper emphasizes the importance of considering social, economic and environmental sustainability aspects integrally in the further development of the existing, highly residual social housing model, with a focus on improving guidelines, rules and parameters in the design domain. Relevant criteria in the architectural and urban design of sustainable social housing were identified, systematized and interpreted, based on the analysis of scientific knowledge, applicable models and international recommendations. A conceptual multicriteria framework was designed with the aim of contributing to the improvement of methodological approaches in the design and evaluation of social housing settlements and buildings in Serbia, as well as in related housing systems

The Ghost Matrix of Belgrade’s City Centre - Tracing the Urban Memory in the Contemporary Urban Tissue of the Dorćol Settlement

    No full text
The constant development of Belgrade’s centre from ancient times until the present day has left significant traces in the morphology of the city, which remain unmarked today. By using a palimpsest method in the area of Dorćol settlement, which is one of the oldest continually inhabited zones of Belgrade, it is possible to locate the spatial elements from different chronological periods, which have determined the boundaries of the present-day urban matrix. The research is based on the overlapping of the historical and archaeological plans and maps of Belgrade, as well as mapping of the places of historical everyday life described in the various sources, which help determine the spatial and functional continuity of traces of urban elements from the past scattered throughout the contemporary urban tissue. Overlapping of the spatial elements from the past gives a new insight into the sites of urban memory artefacts and understanding the way they have directly influenced the location, position, volume and use of contemporary buildings and streets. The paper will identify and locate the layers of urban memory in the territory of Dorćol and its immediate surroundings to determine the (in)visible urban memory element – the Ghost Matrix, as a significant element of Belgrade’s heritage. The results of the research emphasize the continuity of the urbomorphological development of Dorćol, pointing out the precise locations of the (in)visible past within the city and their impact on everyday life today

Urban Planning Impact on Mobility and Residential Satisfaction of Older People in Novi Sad

    Get PDF
Social, political and economic changes have generated processes of revitalization of the built environment in post-socialist countries since the beginning of the 1990s; these changes are related to the physical structure of the city, its facilities and its functions, as well as the city landscape. Urban planning affects people’s quality of and way of life, as well as residential satisfaction with the built environment, especially that of older people, who make up a significant part of sustainable communities. This paper examines the residential satisfaction of older adults in terms of mobility—that is, their ability to move using facilities offered by public transportation and public places—in two neighborhoods of Novi Sad which have undergone the most extensive urban regeneration. This approach is different from the existing urban studies dealing with residential satisfaction, which makes it a contribution to the literature. Unlike previous studies—which have explored residential satisfaction at the level of accessibility to local facilities, safety in the urban environment and support from the environment—this paper also investigates the impact of movement in public space on the residential satisfaction of older people. The results show that the residential satisfaction of older people is low with regard to public transport, the arrangement of public spaces and traffic infrastructure

Enhancing Biocultural Diversity of Wild Urban Woodland through Research-Based Architectural Design: Case Study—War Island in Belgrade, Serbia

In the vortex of the environmental and ecological crises, it is clear that the cosmopolitan way of living is facing uncertainty with no easing in sight. Looking beyond the horizon at what the aftermath will yield, it is quite clear that the meaning of urbanity has to be transformed; the urban life has to support social and ecological well-being, and the city has to intertwine more closely with nature. Therefore, wild urban woodlands (WUWs), often morphologically exclusive, culturally contradictory, and biologically heterogeneous, are recognized together with the other informal wilderness of the city as catalyzers of a newly constructed identity and the first line of defense when the question of the socio-ecological resilience of the city is raised. The present study focuses on how the biocultural diversity of WUWs can be stimulated by architecture and on which principles and restorative components an architectural design should stand on. Taking War Island on the river Danube, in the very heart of Belgrade, Serbia, as the particular case study, a specific assignment was given to students of the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade to affirm, recuperate, and stipulate the relationship between the nature and the culture of the site. On the threshold of interdisciplinarity, a net of coordinated values is set up based on a theoretical, analytic, and typomorphological approach, gathering the eco-cultural aspects, components, and characteristics of the place. On the bases of the students’ research-based design propositions, the results show different design paths promoting accessibility and security, restoring social responsibility and awareness, and regaining the socio-ecological well-being of the place. The conclusions drawn from the study open the perspective of the alliance between nature and culture through an architectural infrastructure that heals the landscape and induces its therapeutic properties, enhancing the biocultural diversity of the place and proclaiming a kind of hedonistic sustainability for the future life of cities

...One of the main aims of the DANUrB INTERREG Project is the reactivation of underused cultural heritage and resources in shrinking settlements of Danube river’s peripheral and border regions in order to make them more attractive again. A vision of a collaborating network of cities along the Danube allowed us to better understand the potentials for development whilst also exploring possible strategies. Therefore, it is our mission with this Atlas to show an interconnected spatial and cultural system of communities along the Danube, helping to understand the highly complex and dynamic transformation of our region through the centuries and to value its natural and built resources. Besides the presentation of Danubian medium and small cities, and their undiscovered heritage and potentials, our mission was also to spread the successful stories and projects from the region, promoting the transferability of good practices to less developed towns. We aimed to make comparable the spatial development of the selected settlements along the Danube by using the common format of this Atlas for many diverse maps, photos, illustrations, and short texts....СРПСКИ: Дигитална ГИС верзија D+ атласа доступна на / ENGLISH: The digital GIS-based version of the D+ Atlas is available at: [http://danurb-atlas.elfak.ni.ac.rs/] ; Napomena administratora: deponovana verzija publikacije je u izvesnom stepenu korigovana u odnosu na štampanu verziju

    Get PDF
The functional and architectural obsolescence of the post-war multi-family housing stock, and high energy consumption of the buildings, are characteristics that require complex and integrated renovation. The research problem is the high energy consumption for heating the existing multi-family residential buildings built in the period 1946-1970. Those buildings are one quarter of the total multifamily housing stock of Serbia. The approach of renovating existing buildings by adding exoskeletons has its functional advantages that set it apart as one of the more significant approaches to complex building renovation. The subject of the research includes the analysis of the application of the exoskeleton addition strategy to existing multifamily buildings in order to achieve high energy efficiency of buildings and increase the space of residential units, and improve vertical communications of buildings. The aim of the research is to examine the advantages of the approach to integrated improvement of existing building by applying the strategy of exoskeleton addition, which includes energy, spatial and functional improvement of the existing building. The paper will define the methodological procedure of exoskeleton application from the initial idea, identification of the research problem, strategy of its application, to the results that can be achieved by such a procedure

    Get PDF
The Roman Limes is recognised as a serial cultural property of exceptional universal values of international importance by UNESCO. In the Republic of Serbia, it includes the Danube Valley. The protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion of sites along the Danube in Serbia is a prerequisite for the entry of this part of the Roman Limes on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. Bearing in mind the current state of a large number of sites, the question of their protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion in a contemporary context arises. Referring to the principles of international charters and conventions, the main goal of this paper is to spread knowledge about the possibilities of the protection, revitalisation, presentation and promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of the Roman Limes in Serbia, all for the integration of cultural and natural heritage into the contemporary environment and the establishment of sustainable landscape development. The results are presented through a case study of the late antique tomb in Brestovik, through the conceptual solutions of architecture students, within which the possibilities of integrating contemporary architecture into spaces of natural and historical values were examined. The expected results include raising awareness of the possibilities of integrating natural and cultural heritage into a contemporary context, as well as considering the natural and cultural heritage as a driver for establishing sustainable landscape development

Енергетска обнова омотача стамбених зграда коришћењем органских материјала за ниво трошковно-оптималног унапређења у БиХ и Србији

Towards building renovation strategies, the research is led by a very deep renovation of residential buildings, which would reduce the energy need for heating below 40 kWh/m2 or create energy savings 60%. The renovation of the building envelope, guided by organic materials (such as wood), which is in the one of key principles in the New Renovation Wave Strategy of the European Union from October 2020, is presented in the paper. Energy saving made by renovating building envelopes using wooden modular systems, are shown through characteristic building on which their application is adequate. Case study from Bosnia and Herzegovina indicate possible energy savings of 81% for residential type Multi-family houses – MFH from period 1961-1970.
