Case Study - Genex Tower: Spatial and Ideological Phenomena

    Get PDF
The subject of this research includes analysis of the New Belgrade Block 33, primarily the Genex Tower, as a representative residential and commercial building that is a symbol of both Block 33 itself and the city of Belgrade in general. Monumental building, representative of late modernism and one of the most recognizable examples of brutalism in the Republic of Serbia and the Balkans, makes up a sort of urban beacon of the City of Belgrade. At the time of construction, which took place between 1970 and 1980, it was the tallest and the first "smart" building in the Balkans, becoming known as the “Western City Gate”. The multi-tier significance of the Genex Tower, both architectural and aesthetic, but also in cultural, sociological and ideological aspects that dominated the space during the second half of the 20th century, initiated the selection of the Genex Tower to be the subject of this case study. The underlying problem of the research is the current state of the building, contradicting its recognized significance, which is reflected, above all, in the neglect of the immediate surrounding and the devastation of access plateaus. Therefore, the primary objective of this research (case study) is a critical review of the current state of the Genex Tower, aiming to emphasize the necessity of rebuilding and repairing certain segments within Block 33 and the building itself that would contribute to the restoration of its former significance. The case study focuses on historical analysis of the Genex tower and Block 33, as well as the context in which the Genex Tower was built - it aims to provide better understanding of the social, cultural and political phenomena that influenced its construction and formation of its unique identity. Methodology applied within this research paper - case study includes analysis of the current state of Block 33, the Genex Tower and the context within which the object is located. The focus is on evaluating the state of the plateaus within Block 33, as well as evaluating the materialization of the Genex Tower and the details of the facade that represent the expression of architect Mihajlo Mitrović. Based on different data sources, primarily photos from the location, archival documentation and conversations with the residents, it was possible to determine the current state of Block 33 and the Genex Tower. This is followed by the mapping of various phenomena that significantly influenced the formation of the identity of the space, further comparing them with the original state of the tower immediately after it was built. The result of the case study is shown through an isometric drawing depicting the current state of Block 33 and the Genex Tower as its center and symbol, with prominent phenomena recognized in the space which were essential for the development of the identity of Block 33 and the Genex Tower. Furthermore, the drawing aims to illustrate the intense atmosphere of the Genex Tower as a symbol of the city of Belgrade, as well as the symbol of one cultural, political and historical period that marked the second half of 20th century in the Republic of Serbia and the Balkans

The competition proposal follows four fundamental principles aiming to create an authentic, locally specific and self-sustaining cultural district. The principles of development are (1) Sensitivity and historical layering, which implies minimal interventions with maximum respect for the inherited structure, physiognomy of space and character of the place, (2) Networking and continuity of space and programs, achieved by integrating the urban matrix, securing temporal continuity and encouraging social integration, (3) New nature, which implies responsibility towards nature and people, and as such directs interventions towards the globally defined sustainable development goals (SDG) and (4) Realization in phases, taken as an element of the spatial-economic concept, which strives to contribute to the financial- logistic project feasibilityВЕЛИКА НАГРАДА 31.

In his Biophilia Hypothesis (1984), Edward O. Wilson highlighted humanity’s innate need to connect with nature, describing biophilia as an emotional and genetic bond with living organisms, integral to human nature. Stephen R. Kellert and Wilson later applied this concept to the built environment, establishing the foundation for biophilic design. This approach integrates natural elements into architecture to promote well-being and ecological harmony. Studies show its effectiveness across workplaces, healthcare facilities, and public spaces. In workplaces, biophilic design enhances productivity, cognitive function, and well-being while reducing stress and absenteeism, aligning with the salutogenic approach, which focuses on health promotion. Biophilic design has become a holistic strategy for improving human health and fostering sustainability in architecture and urban planning.Saopštenje štampano u izvodu

Responsible education of architects – experience from international research projects at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture

    No full text
EAAE Charter on Architectural Research states that architecture is facing challenges of globalization, rapid urbanization, ecological disturbance and social transformation that necessitate permanent development in the field of education [1]. Educators, in particular, faculties and universities, need to understand and explain those changes and find a way to broaden the competencies of future generations to accept and deepen a responsible attitude towards the environment. Apart from permanent curricula improvements and innovative ways of intertwining research and teaching into a unique educational agenda, one of the essential components is also internationalization, both on the level of the study program and the level of student and staff mobility. The University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture is determined to strategically enhance the educational process through internationalization under the umbrella of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Green Deal and New European Bauhaus. In that way, research and education expand horizons mutually, with international experience and expertise widening our knowledge and learning to accept differences and responsibilities as educators and architects.Članak je nastao kao rezultat predavanja po pozivu održanog tokom Medjunarodne konferencije Savremena teorija i praksa u graditeljstvu XV, održane u Banja Luci od 16 do 17. juna 2022. godine. 54.

    Get PDF

Light as a Medium for Supporting Leisure Activities in Open Public Spaces

    Get PDF
This work identifies lighting as a non-invasive method for the transformation of a space that simultaneously and unconstructively articulates various activities and does not interfere with the inherited physical framework. Through experimental research and a case study of the "Eastern City Gate of Belgrade" housing settlement in Serbia, which was designed and built in the second half of the 20th century, the activity rhythm of a contemporary user is explored. The research goal was to recognise the decision-making tools for increasing the quality of open public spaces during the night-time mode of use by improving the quality of lighting. The study proposes the new lighting design model that supports night-time leisure activities in mass housing open public spaces in the contemporary urban context
