Creative Pedagogies for Urban Design: Redesign of Urban Pockets in Zrenjanin

    No full text
The modern era is often characterised by a hectic lifestyle, pandemic states and stress-infused work ethics, thus creating crucial issues of living and working in the 21st century. These issues have demonstrated several problematic areas in the fi eld of education, especially regarding higher education levels. Creative pedagogical methodologies must be constantly innovated (reinvented) and adapted to increasingly rapid changes in a generally connected society, where young people are exposed to a multitude of information, and the ways of communicating science must be adapted to them. In this paper, the particular manner of creative pedagogies as a frontier to university education will be presented in the case study of a course at the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture. The “Contemporary Urban Concepts” course is an integral part of the fi rst-year curricula of the Master of Integrated Urbanism. The paper aims to present the unique teaching methodologies alongside the students' results. In the school year 2024-25, students analysed the application of hybrid models of contemporary urban concepts, from a broader concept to the urban project of urban pockets. The results present these teaching techniques and processes in the example of Zrenjanin, a small city in Vojvodina, Serbia, where so many urban concepts through students' proposals have been implemented: from 15-min city and cycle city to green and blue infrastructure, green city, vibrant city, urban acupuncture, tactical urbanism, biophilic design, healthy city, happy city with elements of branding, sense of community and other specifi c elements and urban concepts. The specifi c spatial guidelines showed as results in this paper can be benefi cial for the local Municipality as well as for future research in the fi eld of both creative pedagogies and small city urban hubs regeneration

    Opera Through Atmospheric Narratives

    No full text
By analyzing the relationship between character portrayal in contemporary opera productions and the creation of architectural atmosphere, this study interprets how theatrical staging can serve as a clear platform for critiquing societal norms, focusing on the position of women, particularly those depicted as sex workers, through a comparative analysis of various productions of Verdi’s La Traviata. The study examines directorial approaches to portraying diverse facets of Violetta Valéry, a prominent marginalized female character. Through a comparative analysis of three distinct stagings that underscore different dimensions of her complex personality, the research investigates the interplay between character portrayal and spatial representation of pivotal moments in libretto. This interpretive analysis, framed by the architectural responses in realizing visionary opera staging concepts (Regieoper), sheds light on how architectural choices reflect societal attitudes. By emphasizing varied facets of Violetta’s character, these productions offer novel insights into familiar narratives, amplifying subtle messages that might otherwise be overlooked. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the potency of architectural atmospheres in visual storytelling and shaping perceptions of marginalized individuals, underscoring the potential for theatrical productions to serve as platforms for social critique and catalysts for change. The nuanced use of atmosphere enriches our interpretation of Violetta’s character, revealing layers of her personality and societal constraints that traditional staging might overlook. The spatial dynamics and scenic design not only frame her narrative but also evoke emotional and psychological responses that deepen our understanding of her plight and resilience

Network Science [urban computing and advanced computational design methods] : Grand Paris [The 24th Salon of architecture, 2024]

    No full text
The science of networks can be considered a key instrument for complex systems analysis/analytics, design, and planning. Under its framework and through its main analytical methods and forms (network graphs and related operations), one of the urban subsystems—urban mobility and transportation system—has been represented and investigated. The Grand Paris rail network, including all its transportation categories (metro, tram, RER, TGV) with their existing lines and extensions currently either in construction and planned or under consideration in the long term, has been modelled as a background topological and simulation environment and geometry for various abstract and real-world research operations and generative design tasks with respect to urban computing (e.g., movement path generation, the network’s incremental growth and reconfiguration, spatial urban scenario constructions, decision-making, etc.). The interactive representation of analytical data that is relevant for this type of urban systems, will be considered in the upcoming period as the next urban programmability step. The foundations for this task have been obtained by creating diagrammatic identification charts for each of the metro lines, but with the intention to extend them to all transportation modes that have been included in the designed network.

Interdisciplinary Pedagogies in Architectural Education: Fostering Human–Nature Connections and Well-being [predavanje po pozivu štampano u izvodu]

    No full text
As cities increasingly face ecological degradation, social fragmentation, and disconnection from natural systems, education in architecture and urbanism must evolve to address these complex realities through integrative and transformative approaches. This presentation shares experiences from the development and implementation of interdisciplinary educational activities that blend formal and informal learning—ranging from academic courses and design studios to international summer schools and workshops. Focusing on creative practices and design as a medium for transformative change, this research emphasizes how place-based and experiential education can empower students to cocreate wise cities for healthier, more connected urban environments. Through direct engagement with diverse contexts, communities, and ecologies, students are encouraged to critically examine the spatial, cultural, and environmental dimensions of design. By detecting hidden values in spatial patterns that support psychological and physical well-being and deepen human–nature relationships, these pedagogical models aim to shift the focus from material and technical solutions toward integrative, sensitive, and future-oriented design thinking. In doing so, education becomes a key driver of urban transformation, nurturing the capacities needed to imagine and shape wise cities that are resilient, inclusive, and rooted in care for both people and the planet

Rethinking Regionalism Through the Yugoslav Context : Insights Gained from Mass Housing Neighbourhoods

    No full text
This research focuses on Regionalism in post-war Yugoslavia by analysing various regions of Yugoslavia and mass housing neighbourhoods (MHNs) within them. The aim is to advocate for the recognition of regional characteristics in MHNs, which are often perceived as "the same everywhere" despite exhibiting diverse urban forms and architectural characteristics shaped by their local contexts. Recognising these aspects in MHNs is important in order to counteract universalistic approaches to their renovation that stem from previous misconceptions. A possible answer to recognising regional differences between MHNs lies in the notion of Regionalism, an architectural discourse with a rich history comprised of various theories and practices. However, the current state of this research field suggests a lack of methodologically oriented research and a need for more contextual sensitivity during analysis. Post-war Yugoslavia provides a fascinating context for exploring regional differences in MHNs due to its complex history, diverse demographics, and geographical position at the convergence of multiple historical empires, alongside its specific socialist-modernist architectural expression and amount of MHNs built within it. Rethinking Regionalism through it could expand our theoretical understanding of the notion and provide methodological approaches to identifying regional characteristics in architecture that may also be applicable beyond the Yugoslav context

The development of a multi-criteria model for evaluating the potential of converting office buildings into hotels was initiated by the challenges commonly encountered in conversion projects, due to which a certain number of buildings in prime locations are not utilized. There are office buildings out of use, the demolition of which is irrational, and when they are located in cultural districts, a conversion may be the only viable solution. Although it is often optimal for office buildings out of use to sustain their function after adaptation, sometimes this is not the best solution. Within cultural districts, a certain number of office buildings that have been converted into hotels represent examples of successful realizations, and due to the growing number of domestic and foreign tourists, there is an increasing demand for additional accommodation capacities in Belgrade. An analysis of existing multi-criteria models related to evaluating the potential for converting office buildings into permanent or temporary housing revealed that the context for which the model is intended has a significant influence on the choice of model criteria. The focus of the doctoral dissertation is on the characteristics of office buildings - criteria that either positively or negatively affect their conversion potential. Additional research questions address the selection of an appropriate evaluation method - optimization techniques, the establishment of a priority system for aspects, parameters, and criteria (including sub-criteria) and indicators, the presentation of the final results, and the use of the model. A multi-criteria model for evaluating the potential of converting office buildings into hotels has been developed. Through examples of good practice from around the world and analyzing the criteria (sub-criteria) and indicators from relevant existing multi-criteria models, a comprehensive platform of aspects and criteria is established. The new model defines the evaluation method, appropriate optimization techniques, and the priorities of criteria (sub-criteria) and indicators. Applying such models in the early stages of conversion projects enhances efficiency and economic viability, offering a direct practical application. The research findings contribute to the development of new models, while providing guidelines for improving the potential for the conversion of office buildings in the future

Considering the Future of Infrastructural Heritage [abstract]

    No full text
Keeping up with trends in techno-ecological strategies for the future development of cities, industrial archaeology reveals a new paradigm that we may not be fully aware of. Infrastructural heritage, namely railways, iron bridges, etc., as relicts of the industrial past, juxtapose two different characters. On one side, they represent glorious evidence of human progress, and on the other, evidence of the ecological degradation of the environment. Therefore, their perception as cultural heritage or, better said, the legacy they convey is contested and in question. In the spirit of the cyborg society to which we belong, burdened with a task to recreate, reuse, recuperate, remediate and reassure a sustainable environment, it is necessary to reimagine a way of looking at and understanding the future of infrastructural heritage. Instead of seeing them as mere monuments of the past, they could become active participants in the techno-ecological recovery of the urban environment. In the surroundings of the Design Studio, project research was conducted on the case study of the Old Railway Bridge in Belgrade. Together with master’s students, we sought different architectural narratives that could generate hybrid naturalities in the urban environment. Architecture is understood as a tool through which biotic and abiotic merge, opening a series of broader critical themes of ecologically based design. Results offer a wide perspective of traces overlapping nature and culture, producing new complex urban-ECO-logics
