The concept is based on a systematic reading of the complex context, where diverse spatial and functional elements are embedded within the natural landscape. Its aim is to revive and interconnect all components—internally and with the surrounding urban fabric. Natural structure, urban fabric, public spaces and mobility, cultural actors and cultural practices are identified as key determinants and articulated into coherent spatial-programmatic units forming one system—a CONSTELLATION. The title reflects principles of connectedness despite distance, hierarchy of “stars,” perceptual patterns and interpretative flexibility, alongside invisible links and networks of relations

    No full text
Nine-layer laminated veneer lumber (LVL) 1300 by 850 mm, in nominal thickness of 20 mm, was produced using beech veneer and reinforced LVL (RLVL), by inserting carbon fiber fabric between the veneer sheets. The research aimed to assess the enhancement of flexural properties, both in edgewise and flatwise bending, of beech LVL reinforced with carbon fiber fabric. Two types of reinforcements were made, using two types of adhesives: phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and polyurethane (PUR), in the industrial conditions. In the first group of samples (K1), the reinforcements were placed further from the neutral axis, and in the second group (K2) closer to the neutral axis. These groups were compared to the unreinforced control sample (K). Some physical properties, bending behavior parallel to the grain, and failure mode were determined and analyzed. Edgewise bending strength of the RLVL was about 11% higher than the control in the case of PF adhesive, while flatwise bending strength was about 40% lower than the control in the case of PUR adhesive. The experimental data were verified using the ANOVA model. The most important results of the study define different behavior and fracture mechanisms for each reinforcement and adhesive, highlighting the potential of RLVL for structural applications

    No full text
The famous “EXPO” exhibition led by the French Bureau International des Expositions in 2027 will be organised in Belgrade. Significant investments, new construction sites, and recognisable mega-projects of architecture are integral to EXPOs worldwide. These exhibitions have greatly impacted city branding by developing urban landmarks, attracting millions of new tourists yearly. On that notice, with the aim of planning an alternative version of the exhibition “EXPO 2027 Belgrade,” we developed the task for students of the fourth year of integrated academic studies at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture, in the academic year 2023-24. The total number of students engaged in this course is over 40. Students worked in groups and collaborated closely with mentors and associates during one semester of active teaching. The methodological process is based on the guidelines of the “RIBA - The Royal Institute of British Architects” methodology that starts from developing a vision and information base, then continues on extensive analysis and evaluation to create conceptual urban design solutions. Following this methodology, the students are introduced to creative techniques such as the superhero and lotus blossom method, which requires thinking “outside of the box “and delivering fresh ideas with a critical approach towards practice examples. Student works represent the original visions for innovative sustainable concepts for an exhibition like “EXPO 2027 - EXPO 2027” and are presented as an attractive design and extensive program

Hybrid Intelligence as Artificial Life in Design: Selected Notions for Investigating Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Systems in Relation to Architectural and Urban Studies [abstract]

    No full text
The paper will analyse the most recent modes of hybrid intelligence and generative design principles for possible application in architectural and urban studies. Such an objective follows the question of contributions to the body of work on hybrid algorithmic design arising from these studies and their influence on the way the field can evolve as a consequence of various responses to urban and architectural requirements. Due to the inherent transdisciplinarity of the topic and the fact that explanation requires the convergence of a larger number of areas external to architectural and urban studies, adjacent scientific fields from where these studies have drawn primary sources of operative knowledge will enter a discussion. Considering the range of algorithmic AI and evolutionary attributes that support their advanced hybrid algorithmic structures and performances as either a major condition for achieving design goals or a key means to trace their way forward, it becomes important to properly explain the relationship that makes such design approach viable, involving: major concepts of human-machine interaction, human agents, and artificial agency of various abstract and technical character (abstract and real machines). Having considered the fact that generative principles from nature constitute the basis of all their machine-related interpretations and artificial life, through references explaining this view, the major part of the study will focus on the most recent algorithmic forms and forms of human-machine collaboration grounded in computer sciences, cognitive sciences, biotechnologies, and neurosciences, which result in the argued form of hybrid generative artificial intelligence (hybrid GenAI). With different algorithmic structures and types in mind, the study will try to establish a proper equivalent between the current algorithmic evolutionary and non-evolutionary strategies and generative design strategies, arriving at the latest design application of advanced computational practices related to postulated hybrid intelligence—hybridisation of artificial intelligence with human intelligence in a generative framewor

Belgrade, the capital and largest city of Serbia, represents a dominant real estate market, especially residential, with a constantly high demand from buyers. Until 2000, the market was shaped by socialist and post-socialist housing policies, which made housing provision a central priority, while after that it transitioned to a market-driven system with continued population growth fuelling demand, outstripping supply, and increasing property prices. At the same time, customer profiles and their motives have become increasingly diverse, which has affected the breadth and quality of the offer of modern residential complexes. The transformation of society and globalization brings more complex demands of buyers and new criteria for assessing the quality of real estate. Factors such as location, connectivity, equipment, efficiency in daily activities, and immediate availability of services and goods stand out as key. Modern customers have increasingly sophisticated expectations, including multifunctional spaces, complex and environment maintenance, security systems, greenery, and attractive views. New trends in the way of life and work further shape the attractiveness and value of real estate. The research aims to identify and rank the perceived quality factors of modern residential complexes in Belgrade. The methodology includes an extensive literature review and survey research, whereby quality factors are analyzed through the categories of: location and mobility, socio-demographic characteristics, comfort (equipment, functions, services), and branding. The results provide a systematic insight into buyers' perception of the quality of residential units and the contemporary needs and preferences that shape the real estate market

    No full text
The National Capitals of Culture Program, initiated by the Ministry of Culture of Serbia, aims to decentralize cultural activities, enhance local cultural infrastructure, and strengthen the identity of smaller towns. This paper examines how the cities awarded this title have pursued development objectives within the program’s framework and implemented key capital projects, assessing how these efforts have contributed to urban regeneration, socio-economic growth, and increased visibility on national and regional levels. The research adopts a multiple case study methodology, focusing on the cities of Čačak (2023) and Užice (2024) as National Capitals of Culture from the start of the program to the present day. The study involves the analysis of official program documents, public opinion surveys, and interviews with residents and broader communities, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the program’s impact on urban development. Čačak, as the first National Capital of Culture, proposed projects such as the Basketball Museum, a Cultural Incubator, and the reconstruction of the Nadežda Petrović Plateau to enhance the city’s brand. Using a similar approach, Užice follows with plans to renovate the Grand Hall of the City Cultural Centre, creating a multifunctional venue for cultural activities. The goal is the evaluation of the extent to which these cities have met the program’s objectives, focusing on cultural decentralization and long-term improvements in cultural infrastructure. The findings aim to provide insights into the alignment between planned and implemented projects, offering a critical perspective on their contribution to urban development and their impact as experienced by local communities and cultural stakeholders

Open Process of Architectural Design for Contemporary Housing [predavanje po pozivu štampano u izvodu]

    No full text
The case study project examines housing as a dynamic and transformative agent of the urban environment, exploring how process of architectural design can remain open, adaptable, and socially responsive. The project originates from a competition brief for a large-scale housing development located 11.5 km from the city center and intended for vulnerable social groups. This spatial and social detachment raises questions about the sustainability and inclusiveness of peripheral housing models. The project redefines the architectural process as an open system - a framework that anticipates transformation, participation, and pro-occupancy adaptation. Through iterative testing of capacities, volumes, and typologies, the work challenges the finiteness of architectural form and proposes incompleteness as an operational strategy. Referencing concepts from Le Corbusier’s Dom-Ino, to contemporary cases such as projects by ELEMENTAL and BeL Architekten, the project situates itself within a lineage of architecture that emphasizes process over object, and contingency over control. It proposes that true architectural quality emerges only once a structure is inhabited, conceptualizing architecture not as a fixed design product, but as a living framework for social and spatial negotiation
