Building technologies towards achieving sustainable heritage
Various aspects of building technologies are integrated into contemporary design approaches in sustainable heritage treatment. From the basic analysis of buildings, starting from applied materials and structural characteristics to the complex design interventions and their impact on future building performance, strategies, and tools related to technological issues are constantly being developed. These tools are used throughout the design process and serve for testing and validation of various concepts. On the other hand, many strategies and approaches integrate technological issues
in the core steps of building design, starting from the initial concepts. Usually used as an adjective for the word design (environmentally responsive, energy conscious, climate- sensitive, carbon neutral, etc.) these numerous concepts carry an added value, which contributes to the qualities
of environmental protection and/or comfort issues. While these diverse tendencies should be encouraged, there is also a raising need for all those values to become integral to the design process. This approach is being encouraged by legislation, and to a larger extent by market uptake (through labelling), but still, all the mentioned values are too often being regarded as an added feature, relying on technological solutions. Mapping the overlaps in the different approaches and actions which all have a similar technological background is the first step in defining a common methodology for sustainable heritage treatment

Годишњак студентских радова УБ-АФ је резултат вишегодишње активности развијане на Универзитету у Београду – Архитектонском факултету и настао је са намером да буде један од канала дисеминације и промоције резултата наставног процеса на студијским програмима основног и мастер нивоа. Годишњак је публикација прегледног карактера која на систематизован начин пружа увид у теме, приступе и одговоре на семестралне задатке. Arheologija pejzaža: Rekonstrukcija i dogradnja zgrade Muzeja Srema u Sremskoj Mitrovici
Na prostoru današnje Sremske Mitrovice nalazi se jedno od najvrednijih arheoloških nalazišta na teritoriji naše države, u kojem su tragovi antičkog grada Sirmijuma (jednog od prestolnih gradova Rimske imperije) preklopljeni sa svim potonjim slojevima života na ovom području od srednjeg veka do savremenog doba. Ova slojevitost svedoči o kontinuitetu života ali i njegovoj transformaciji, ali ovako bogata faktografija nema prezentaciju koja je adekvatna njenom značaju i atraktivnosti.
U radu sa studentima postavili smo pitanje kako vratiti fokus na bogato kulturno nasleđe koji ono zaslužuje i u društvu i u našim ličnim perspektivama? Kako da upoznamo dovoljno istorijski kontinuitet pripadajućeg nam prostora da bismo umeli da cenimo sebe i sopstveni kulturni identitet danas, koliko I heterogenost tog nasleđa i promene koje je ono preživelo u stalnim odnosima prema drugome i drugačijem?
U okviru nastave na prolećnom semestru školske 2021/22 godine na I godini Master akademskih studija Unutrašnja arhitektura Univerziteta u Beogradu – Arhitektonskog fakulteta, sa obe grupe studenata na modulu Studio M02 (Projekat 01 rukovodilac: doc. Dr Milena Kordić, asistent Dejan Todorović, Projekat 02 rukovodilac: doc. dr Pavle Stamenović, asistent Đorđe Bulajić) radili smo na predlozima Idejnih rešenja rekonstrukcije i dogradnje zgrade Muzeja Srema na trgu Svetog Stefana.
Kroz rad u Studiju postavili smo pitanje načina na koji savremenim projektantskim alatima možemo da učestvujemo u prostornom i kulturalnom kontinuitetu mesta, konkretno arheološkog nalazišta antičkog grada Sirmijuma. Poseban fokus usmeren je na razmeru koja je karakteristična za oblast unutrašnje arhitekture, gde se pitanje čovekomernosti može smatrati ključnim. Studenti su istražili i projektovali precizne intervencije i pozicije dizajna u relaciji prema specifičnom kontekstu i sadržaju. Challenges and Potentials of Green Roof Retrofit: A Case Study
Green roofs are becoming common practice in building new public build-ings and are considered the roofs for the future since they address the issue of energy and environment simultaneously, providing social, environmental and economic benefits. Despite these benefits, retrofitting an existing building with a green roof is not widely practiced. Undergoing such a project is no small task since it requires a thorough investigation of existing building’s constraints, functional, material, and technological to even begin considering design options. Therefore, this process requires specific, case-sensitive approach, especially with the aim of improving the building’s energy performance. This paper presents a methodological approach and design proposals of a green roof retrofit project, through a case study of Belgrade’s “City Housing” building. This retrofit project presents an interesting research topic since it incorporates three distinct roofs, of all of different types, different ways of accessibility and levels of privacy, varying top-to-bottom from a simple extensive roof through a semi-public semi/intensive roof garden to a ground-level public park with trees and intensive vegetation. Also, since this building provides socially signif-icant services, it is frequently visited by general public which presents a potential for introducing educational and demonstration elements in the retrofit project, not only the functional and technological ones. Affirming the concept of continuity in the modernist heritage through the notion of border: case study of the meander buildings in New Belgrade’s Block 23
City planning is shaped by urban, political, social, and other resolutions that are
materialized in the spatial plan. As an example of post-war architecture of the 20th
century, New Belgrade was developed on modernist principles focused on the essence
of dwelling, along with the idea of continuity based on the formation of fluid, liminal spaces
and designing "from the inside out". Taking into account that the blocks of New Belgrade
are particularly valued in the modern-day as locationally desirable and spatially highquality
living units, the research motive is the observed change in the way that one block
entity is considered in today's context against the system of ideas embedded in the
object’s design concept. In accordance with the aforementioned, the research premise is
that the long-term recognition of the overall quality of New Belgrade residential blocks
can be reflected in the preservation of human-scale continuity, which therefore also
ensures temporal continuity - the sustainability of project over time. The proposed
hypothesis will be researched through the analysis of continuity and observed in the form
of ideology instilled in the spatial organization, relying on the user as a reference value.
The continuity of the observed spatial zones is confined by their liminal condition.
Therefore, the border significance is determined through spatially defined phenomena of
different nature (physical, immaterial, social). The methods used in this paper are
theoretical overview, case study, and graphic analysis of the meander objects and their
wider spatial context in New Belgrade’s block 23. Graphic analysis, namely mapping of
relevant borders, sets the frameworks of spatial zones that participate in the construction
of place continuity. Research result is the establishment of a concrete relationship
between the concepts of spatial continuity in modernism, illustrated through the
phenomenon of the border, which further influences the quality of living in the building
after its construction. The research significance lies in a comprehensive understanding
of the relationship between theory and practice, that is, in understanding the process of
design and life of the chosen study objects, observing their development from the initial
idea, through project realization, until its present-day existence
Framing the context: Countryside house [STRAND 2023]
Based on the concept of borrowed landscape, the design focus is to create private space in a natural environment. The design of the residence was committed to achieving a cozy atmosphere allowing a direct relationship with nature – framing the context to create the micro ambiances in the interior, and enhance the experiential value of surroundings. To ensure a personal segment of nature in each functional unit, the standard layout of the house is decomposed. Extended communication with the dining area becomes the focal point of the house, connecting all spaces and bringing the family together
Approaches for Complex and Integrated Refurbishment to Improve Energy Efficiency and Spatial Comfort of the Existing Post-War Mass Housing Stock in Serbia
The research presents approaches to the complex refurbishment of multi-family buildings
constructed during the mass construction period in Serbia. These buildings comprise a quarter of
Serbia’s housing stock, are characterized by high energy consumption for heating, and have major
spatial and organizational deficiencies: small apartments, outdated and inflexible spatial organization, and the absence of elevators. The subject of the research is the application of the methodology of complex and integrated refurbishment by adding volume to existing multi-family buildings with the goal of achieving higher energy efficiency while remodeling and modernizing residential units and improving vertical building communications. The research presents a comparative analysis of the energy performance and spatial organization of the existing building and three variants of building improvement: Case 1 (without volumetric additions), Case 2 (with volumetric additions—relocating vertical communications), and Case 3 (with volumetric additions—expanding usable living space).
Based on the Knaufterm simulations, the energy savings for heating energy consumption compared to the existing state are 81% in Case 1, 89% in Case 2, and 87% in Case 3. Based on predefined parameters of spatial comfort, a comparative analysis of spatial comfort in residential units was conducted for all three improvement variants

The development of the architectural-urban solution starts from the analysis of the existing state of the spatial framework of the intervention (in accordance with the competition conditions, on the basis of which six narratives are formulated, and further illustrated through the presentation of the spatial reality (analysis of existing state and spatial possibility (diagramming of potentials for future transformation. On the basis of contextual research and formulated narratives, the design framework was defined, which consists of: programming matrix, typology of pavilions and spatial articulation of program determinants. The architectural urban solution is characterized by an environmentally sensitive approach that respects environmental conditions, as well as prescribed urban parameters for four specific ambient units, but is also reflected in the creation of a colorful spectrum of activities in the space, and different scenarios in relation to the position and character of individual typologies

Open House Thessaloniki - Exhibition
HERSUS Project Open House in Thessaloniki took place from the 8th till the 16th of June 2023 with an exhibition open to the public at the Centre for Architecture of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The exhibition presented the activities and results of HERSUS Project, including six Intelectual Outputs, three International Student Workshops, awarded projects with Prize on Modern Built Heritage, as well as HERSUS international presence and media projection.
