No full textThe concept of this particular issue of SAJ is double-folded. On the one hand,
it is a part of the edition within SAJ dedicated to the research of doctoral
students. It represents a specific form of research in process and examines parts
or aspects of doctoral research done in collaboration with mentors.
On the other hand, in the capacity of the vice dean for research and science,
as my work is closely related to all aspects of doctoral studies, the topic
“Dialogue between heritage and technology” emerged as the one that came
out on the surface in PhD applicant’s letter of intention, but also as a topic of
great interests for teachers and mentors visible through offered elective courses,
seminars and laboratories..

No full textThe year 2023 is very significant for the University of Belgrade. This year,
the University is celebrating the 215th year of its long tradition, while at the
same time the Faculty of Architecture, as one of its members, has the honor
of hosting the 30th International Seminar on Urban Form conference (ISUF
2023). When the SAJ journal was first established in 2009, one of the initial
papers focused on urban morphology (Morphology and Typology as a Unique
Discourse of Research), highlighting important figures and morphological
schools. Presently, I am fortunate enough to be editor in chief for two issues
in which these very scholars have contributed by providing their insights
on regional perspectives. Over the past fifteen years of Journal publishing,
the Faculty of Architecture has diligently upheld the tradition of publishing
valuable research in the field of architecture and urbanism. This longstanding
practice has served as a platform for scholars and practitioners to share their
insights and contribute to the advancement of knowledge in this field. However,
the year of these three jubilees is a good place to reconsider and critically
examine advancements and perspectives on urban morphology..

No full textWithin the aim of testing generative computational design methods for design problems at the wider spatial, regional, and urban scale, a specific generative design task has been defined. It has been placed within the interdisciplinary field of urban planning, analytics, and design, computational and data sciences, as well as gaming and spatial experience and scenario construction, targeting particularly one of the territorial systems – mobility and transportation. Due to the fact that such infrastructure represents one of the most developed networks with constant internal and external growth, network science came as a supportive framework for bridging the gap between certain areas of spatial disciplines and data and artificial intelligence disciplines.

Generative design problem definition branched along the two tracks. The first one addressed the question of the design of the spatial system of urban and regional mobility, with special regard to its dynamics (growth and restructuring); the Grand Paris Express has been taken as a field of operation. The second addressed the subject of movement path generation within such system, according to the defined criteria, movement scenarios and objectives, and navigation and mobility parameters. The network and the moves within, could have been considered as both abstract and real-world environments and operations, susceptible to the research of both – gaming strategies (academic, operational, and heuristic gaming) and real-world problem-solving strategies.

In that respect, the study seeks the best set of computational design methods for solving defined generative problems, including graph methods, along with inquiries into modes of data representation and possible interoperability between various software frameworks. Sustainable Urban Heritage: Localisation of SDGs by Digitalising Sites in Belgrade
No full textIn historical European cities, affected by modernisation and rapid urbanisation, public spaces with layered cultural heritage elements can be considered pilot locations for the localisation of SDG 11 by implementing digital installations. The significance of digitalisation in policymaking for heritage presentation in public spaces is emphasised by the post-pandemic way of life, with the express development of new ways of interacting with information in mixed-reality environments. The research’s primary goal is to determine aspects of urban analysis required for the implementation of the new media installations in presenting heritage sites in public spaces of European cities, which contribute to the localisation of SDG 11 targets identified in the ICOMOS Policy Guidance. The analysis of the spatial aspects for new media heritage installations in the public spaces is explored in Belgrade’s historic core, which has a variety of heritage sites and cultural influences, making it a compelling case study that can be used in European cities with similar characteristics and features. The implementation process required for new media heritage installations in Belgrade evaluated through the SDGs Indicators List suggests that the digitalisation of heritage sites contributes to the implementation of SDG 11 and some targets of other goals. The use of installations in the informal education within public spaces (SDG 4), the development of the digital infrastructure (SDG 9), and the interdisciplinary process of implementation of “digital monuments” (SDGs 12 and 17) reveal the potential for localisation of multiple SDGs in historical European cities at once
Impact of natural elements in urban public spaces on mental health
Get PDFThe subject of the paper is the analysis of the impact of natural elements in urban public spaces on the mental health of city residents. The problem that triggered the research is the fact that the majority of the world’s population now live in metropolitan areas and the link between well-being and healthy public spaces has never been more clear. The analysis began with the hypothesis that exposure to green/blue spaces positively affects stress, changing moods, mental health, and overall well-being. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the subjective feeling, experience, and understanding of space related to the impact of being and using green and blue spaces in urban areas. Research objectives are to assess the relationship between mental health and existing nature in urban spaces, and to determine the effect natural elements in urban public spaces could have on mental well-being of citizens as a reminder for future projects. The focus was on field research, collecting, analyzing, and evaluating information and evidence of the impact of natural elements on mental health, as well as, presenting them in a systematic way. The results of this research pointed out the importance of natural elements in urban environments for citizens and established the complex relations between urban nature and mental health. These findings should help inform future research and practice on the impact of natural elements in urban spaces on public health, as well as make a contribution to the field of mental health, urban design, landscape architecture, urban planning, and management
Sustainable urban form as an identifior of architectural space
Get PDFThe paper discusses the concept of architectural space, i.e. the process of its creation by separating it from the natural space and delimiting it with vertical artificial wall elements. The discussion is directed towards a sustainable urban form, i.e. defining a viable architectural (urban) space in the process of marking it, delimiting it, placing the basic principle of sustainability - what we take from nature we must return to it - in the focus of the formation of the architectural space. Furthermore, as Semper, in his thought about architecture and history, realizes temporal connections and as Giedion realizes the continuity of space, time and architecture, today nature is increasingly becoming a part of history due to the dominance of technology, and as such we protect it, mark it and return it to its space through communication in between nature and history. We can say that today we manage nature in a sustainable way and that as such it is already marked and becomes a signifier of further processes. As such, nature today can certainly be considered as a factor in the formation of a new ornamentation of the paradigm of sustainability, and its essential placement in the center of the architectural space is somewhat changed by Hans van der Laan the understanding of the architectural space as a limitation of the natural in realizing the connection and interweaving of the "historical lace" of natural and artificial. In the context of the above, the assumption of the research is that a sustainable urban form becomes a signifier of architectural space, and in that process a strong connection between natural, urban and architectural space is realized. It is considered that a sustainable urban form, created as a cast of nature's mold at the place of its creation, represents a fractal of natural-artificial combination through the process of urbanizing natural elements in a sustainable and resilient way.
