The need for an integrative relation in the protection and preservation of heritage viewed through the concept of sustainable development has placed man, nature and culture through the concept of the environment in a comprehensive relationship in which each category of world heritage (both cultural and natural) is considered through the synthesis of material and immaterial values, whereby sustainable development represents a unifying paradigm of ethical and aesthetic approach in understanding the heritage science. The concept of environment is not just a scenography for one of the heritage categories, but it contains ethical and aesthetic values that classify it as a world heritage. This paper draws special attention to the complex relationships within the architectural heritage seen as equally material (physical, tangible) and immaterial (“living”, dynamic, untan- gible. The aesthetic experience of architecture is a key point of sustainable access to heritage. On the other hand, ethics opens up issues of goodwill and freedom, problems of duty and purpose, the relationship between morals and actions that we take in the environments. All of the above points to the necessity of re-examining the heritage policies, bearing in mind the distinct influences and consequences of the modern era
The Science of Networks: Urban Movement Design, Analytics, and Navigation
The science of networks, a relatively young field of research that appeared in such a form and definition at the beginning of the 21st century (as a distinctive, officially approved and accepted scientific discipline (Barabási, 2016)), represents a very powerful area considering the range of subjects to which it contributes and is applied. This science is key for complex systems analysis or analytics (when referring to the (big) data science framework, which now mostly defines its methods and resources (Betty, 2019)) based on the claim that networks encode the interactions between the system’s components (Barabási, 2016) and thus provide insights into the ways complex systems behave, or control the behaviour of the artificially created systems (emphasis added). The area herewith represented through its analytical methods and forms (network graphs and related operations) is the urban transportation system — the Grand Paris rail system, including all the categories with their existing lines and extensions currently either in construction and planned, or under consideration in the long term. The network has been created as a background topological environment and geometry for various research operations and generative design tasks. Some of them, such as urban movement path generation or the network’s incremental growth and reconfiguration as a system and the geometry of possible moves (legal actions), will be presented in more detail. The network can be considered both an abstract and real-world environment and situation, susceptible to the research of both gaming strategies for any constructed scenario and designed spatial situation (academic gaming, operational gaming, and heuristic gaming) and problem-solving strategies related to identified real-world design issues. Thus, the main question posed before the presented graph addresses the ways in which it can be operationalised and the methods through which this can be achieved, with special regard to AI.Invited Conference Contribution - Poster Section / Pape
Improvement of the Teaching Process in the Field of Built Heritage Studies Through a Multidisciplinary Approach to the Revitalisation and Adaptation of Belgrade‘ s Industrial Heritage: Hangar of the Old Belgrade Airport
One of the main challenges in preserving built heritage in the 21st century relates to the possibilities of its revitalisation and adaptation following modern needs while protecting its values and authenticity. Protection of built heritage does not mean only the identification, affirmation and promotion of its urban-architectural and aesthetic values but also a set of cultural-historical values for which it is necessary to recognise built heritage through a multidisciplinary approach – within the broader social context. Therefore, the teaching process at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture aims to establish a unique multi-disciplinary approach to the industrial heritage's revitalisation and adaptation. This paper shows an industrial heritage research methodology systematic representation, applied to the case study of the Hangar of the Old Airport in New Belgrade as an important monument of industrial heritage and technical culture of the 20th century. Through student proposals for revitalisation and adaptation, the applied methodology, the approach for preservation, revitalisation and presentation of industrial heritage's values and the preservation of its authenticity, as well as a description of the use of industrial heritage's values, have been given; which ensured the continuity and survival of industrial heritage for future generations. A special contribution refers to the proposals for preserving the Hangar, which contributes to the teaching process improvement in the built heritage studies at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture
Digital Placemaking Tools for Strengthening the Development of Towns
This paper aims to explore the potential of digital placemaking tools in strengthening the development of towns. With the increasing digitization and the influence of social media in everyday life, placemaking has undergone a transformation with successful outcomes in different cities worldwide. Digital placemaking offers new opportunities for urban regeneration by providing a multifaceted exchange of information and views and by boosting the social, cultural, environmental, and economic value of places (de Filippi et al., 2020; Freeman et al., 2019). Furthermore, the method of co-creation enables communities and their citizens to be involved in the process of detecting and solving problems from the beginning until the implementation of possible solutions.
The paper focuses on small and medium cities along the Danube. Although these cities are shrinking, they have a specific potential to increase local prosperity and international tourist attractiveness by reactivating underused cultural heritage and resources.
In the paper, several digital placemaking tools developed during the Interreg project DANUrB+ will be presented: (1) The digital Platform, an inclusive online communication tool containing data of different stakeholders, their products and services, as well as tangible and intangible cultural heritage; (2) The mobile applications with predefined tours of a city, which were designed to inform tourists of unusual, interesting and forgotten heritage places; (3) The interactive Digital Atlas with educational and promotional qualities for the Danubian region and (4) The variety of online surveys used during the design of Action plans and Pilot projects for small and medium Danube towns.
The research results are presented as possible insights into the future of placemaking and the success stories about the development and implementation of different digital tools for enhancing the overall development of small and medium-sized cities in Europe facing the problem of depopulation and devastation

The monograph’s title refers to the ten main topics which act as a framework for presenting results in research and design in the last 10 years. The subject area, which extends between Dunavska Street and the banks of the Danube, from 25 May-Milan Gale Muskatirovic Sports Centre to Pancevo Bridge, represents a peculiar spatial phenomenon in Belgrade and as such it served for a whole decade as a practice ground for the development of creative and innovative architectural and urbanistic exhibits, concepts and projects. The first part of the monograph deals with the complexity of the spatial framework, its historical evolution and its relevance in the contemporary context. The second part of the monograph presents the structure of the educational process and methodology, which over the span of ten-year experience resulted in a pedagogical approach directing the exhibited stages of the architectural design research exploring this topic. The third part of the monograph shows 10 main units which sum up the results of a decade long study of this topic by referring to particular projects and theses, in regard to their contribution to the aspects of architectural production concerning function, form, space, ambiance and aesthetics. The first group of results concerns the hybrid typologies and programmes dealing with new ways of interpreting the function of architecture in relation to the postindustrial stage of this locality. The second group comprises tendencies of form and structure which relate to the deliberation of architectural and urbanistic structures bearing in mind the given context and the development of Belgrade in the foreseeable future. The third group includes the interpretation of new cultural and aesthetic values of urban space as viewed from phenomenological and aesthetic perspective. This monograph was envisioned as a ten-year retrospective for the future, at the same time giving homage to the past, remembrance and Belgrade’s heritage, and realising modern design methodologies, concepts and production. The Primary scientific and expert contribution of this monograph are authentic design themes that sum up key, multilayered levels of architectural interpretation of a very complex spatial context through the process of architectural design, and the results which present the outcome and methodology of architectural education which affirms architectural and urban designing as a process involving research, theory and design, and intermediality
Post-Covid arhitektura. Promišljanje prostora nakon pandemije [45. salon arhitekture, 2023]
The consequences of the Pandemic are far-reaching and have been a highly exploited topic in scientific research across all fields. The experimental research on the POST-COVID ARCHITECTURE presents COVID-19's impact on the educational process in the field of architectural design, as well as the need to adapt the educational model to newly formed values. Space usage patterns are evolving, therefore the improvement of educational practice is a necessity. This experiment represents a spontaneously formed research through an architectural design that initiated the isolation experiences and its reflection on space usage. Improving the traditional learning environment in architectural design by introducing different approaches to the teaching process is reflected in the widening of the potential of thinking about space. Testing of a design methodology based on David Kolb`s Experiential learning model was carried out at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, the Master academic studies in Interior Architecture as part of the Master's final project “Contemporary Spectacle – Culture and Craft” under the mentorship of assistant professor Dr. Ivana Rakonjac in 2021/2022 school year. The students presented and defended the results of their work in the presence of the committee – assistant professor Dr. Jelena Milošević and professor Dr. Milorad Mladenović. This experiment is presented through the selected student projects – Anastasija Glišović, Emilija Pantić, Sara Dragović, and Tamara Stupar. The presented work aims to show the application of an educational model that transforms personal experiences into operational tools in the design process. Comparative analysis of multi-criteria models for decision-making in the process of building adaptation
Since adaptations are an increasingly common type of activity architectural practice, and buildings out-of-use are a problem faced by a growing number of cities, the paper discusses the structure and segments of multi-criteria models created in different contexts, which are developed to contribute to better decision-making in the process of adaptation, to achieve maximum economic, environmental and social sustainability. The choice of the appropriate architectural and structural intervention is influenced by several criteria, among which, mostly, the decisive ones are those related to the economic viability of the entire adaptation process. The paper presents a comparative analysis of criteria, applied valorization, and applications of five multi-criteria models. The criteria considered within all types of adaptations have been determined, and those that are specific to a certain type of intervention or context have been pointed out. Regarding applied valorization systems, the advantages and disadvantages of MCDA methods used to develop the analyzed tools, quantitative and qualitative scales of evaluation of criteria and indicators are recognized, as well as the possibility of changing their weighting factor. Since the models are intended for non-professional users, the simplicity of the application was considered. Although the focus of research is on the adaptation of office buildings by adaptive reuse, models that include other types of adaptations are also analyzed, because certain segments of these models may be important for creating new models with a greater degree of personalization, which application may extend the period of the useful life of adapted buildings
