Industrial heritage as creative space: a case study of the Banja Luka Tobacco Factory
Between the late 18th century and the early 20th century, industry changed the structure of European cities. The facilities and infrastructure built during the Industrial Revolution transformed cities and became centers of innovation and knowledge. The urban structure of cities at that time was greatly influenced by the construction of factory complexes, whose dimensions made them the dominant structures in their local areas. The purpose of the renewal of industrial buildings is to preserve the urban structure and development stages, and through regeneration and transformation, these facilities are adapted for attractive contemporary reuses. Industrial heritage testifies to the continuous urban, cultural and social development of cities, which makes their preservation and reuse very appropriate.
This paper explores the possibility of adaptive reuse of the Banja Luka Tobacco Factory and the use of industrial heritage for the needs of modern-day urban life. The Banja Luka Tobacco Factory was built at the end of the 19th century, during the Austro-Hungarian period. This factory complex was erected along the city thoroughfare known as the Imperial Road, which connects its northern and southern parts. Elegant residential, sacred, and commercial buildings were erected along this major road; today, they keep urban memory alive. The Tobacco Factory ceased operation in 2018 and it has not been used since. The complex is listed as cultural heritage of special architectural and historical importance. Banja Luka lacks the space needed for infrastructure to help the development of creative industries. Ideas have been put forward to adapt the facilities of the Tobacco Factory to be reused for the culture industry and art. By reviving the complex of the factory, the city could get new space for culture and strengthen the residents' ties with the local cultural heritage
Architectural Engineering Students’ Experiences in a Hybrid Design Studio
In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic’s effects on the educational landscape, information and communication technologies have been used to implement diverse curriculum contents and provide a transition of traditional learning activities into remote or hybrid learning. This paper describes how a digital learning framework was implemented to transform a classroom-based architectural design studio into a setup that complements face-to-face and online activities, allowing for optimal operation under restricted conditions. The learning experience in this hybrid design studio was investigated using qualitative content analysis, while data from pre- and post-course surveys, and data from the learning platform’s analytics, provide insight into the participants’ perceptions of the course. Findings show that students’ assessments of hybrid learning are generally positive; however, further development of this pedagogy could provide even better responses to accessibility, acquisition, and operation challenges. The study offers a perspective on how to adapt learning in order to provide continuity of educational process beyond changing circumstances and could inform further reviewing and discussion on directions of long-term redefining of a studio design in post-pandemic times when teaching modes are likely to have a more significant online component
Urbana oaza
Budva Horizon [1st Prize at 32nd International Urban Planners Exhibition]
The development of the architectural-urban solution starts from the analysis of the existing state of the spatial framework of the intervention (in accordance with the competition conditions, on the basis of which six narratives are formulated, and further illustrated through the presentation of the spatial reality (analysis of existing state and spatial possibility (diagramming of potentials for future transformation. On the basis of contextual research and formulated narratives, the design framework was defined, which consists of: programming matrix, typology of pavilions and spatial articulation of program determinants. The architectural urban solution is characterized by an environmentally sensitive approach that respects environmental conditions, as well as prescribed urban parameters for four specific ambient units, but is also reflected in the creation of a colorful spectrum of activities in the space, and different scenarios in relation to the position and character of individual typologies

18. BINA 2023. Kontinuitet [recenzija]
(...)BINA has reached adulthood – 18 years. Congratulations! Every professional growth brings with it maturation, recognition, joy of creation, sometimes frustration, but not BINA's. Its succession of years, all the way to adulthood- those that should indicate maturity and readiness for a change- are marked exclusively positive, as the only witness of the maturing process. (...
The importance of site specific sustainable hospital design: general hospital in Pljevlja, Montenegro
The emphasis on ecological design in healthcare settings is growing daily, reflecting the worldwide move
towards sustainable planning. These design principles were emphasized in the contest proposal for General
Hospital in Pljevlja, Montenegro. Across various design iterations and conceptual frameworks, the final
competition entry distinctly emphasizes the integration of natural landscapes with the hospital's
architectural design, prioritizing the main hospital users - the patients. The goal was to create a
relationship between nature and the architectural structure in healthcare settings, while elevating patients’
comfort. We emphasize the enhancing of environmental awareness through passive design techniques and
energy-efficient measures, particularly given the information about unique energy usage patterns in
hospitals. This approach takes into account the distinct climate and location-specific needs, which are set
to be the main factors in the early stages of design process
10.10: 10-Year Retrospective of Architectural Education Outcomes In 10 Themes On The Topic Of Postindustrial Development Of The Area Between Dunavska Street And The Danube’s Belgrade Waterfront
This paper aims to present 10 main groups of results as the outcome of 10 years of work undertaken as part of the educational process of completing a master’s thesis at the Master Studies at the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, on the topic of Post-industrial Development of the area between Dunavska Street and Danube's Belgrade Waterfront, under the mentorship of professor Nebojša Fotirić, with assistant Dr Bojana Jerković-Babović. The subject area represents a peculiar spatial phenomenon in Belgrade and as such it served for a whole decade as a practice ground for the development of creative and innovative architectural and urbanistic exhibits, concepts and projects. Dealing with the very complex spatial context through the process of architectural design, the results present the outcome and methodology of architectural education, affirming architectural and urban design as a process involving research, theory and design, and intermediality. The outcomes are classified into three main parts which will be visually presented in this paper - (1) hybrid typologies and programmes dealing with new ways of interpreting the new functions in the post-industrial phase of this locality; (2) tendencies of form and structure which relate to the deliberation of architectural and urbanistic structures in the foreseeable future, and (3) new cultural and aesthetic values of urban space in phenomenological and aesthetic perspectives
Tracing The Intricate in Scene Design: The Temptation to be Happy [Recognition STRAND 2023]
Lorenzo Marone’s best-selling novel La tentazione di essere felici (The Temptation to be Happy), is renowned for its profound exploration of human relationships, emotions, and the significance of reflecting on all those seemingly small moments in life. The scene design concept for its staging at the National Theatre in Belgrade relies precisely on the intricacies of these relationships. Simultaneously, within a confined space, the audience is presented with all the actors and staging elements crucial for the play. Three main rotating walls, along with a few other essential pieces of furniture, move and transform the playing space to depict all the main settings for contemplating ordinary life, thereby showcasing the intertwined and complex relationships between the play's characters. The complexity of the relationships between the characters is translated into spatial elements subtly repeated and woven throughout the personal spaces of the various main characters. These include Cesare's apartment, Catherine's office, and Dante's apartment, as well as several non-places such as the gallery, street, and hospital. These recurring motifs serve as binding threads, symbolizing the interweaving of life's minutiae—the little things that give life meaning. The transformation of space from one setting to another evokes a poetic dance, highlighting the emergence of overarching qualities within the intricate web of relationships among characters, spaces, and spatial motifs.
