Flexural Properties in Edgewise Bending of LVL Reinforced with Woven Carbon Fibers
This paper presents the results of experimental testing of the bending strength and modulus of elasticity in edgewise bending of unreinforced and reinforced seven-layer LVL (laminated veneer lumber) poplar veneer panels. The aim of the research is to determine the influence of woven carbon fibers on the improvement of the bending properties and modulus of elasticity of LVL bending in the plane of the plate, as well as the influence of adhesives on the bending properties of the composite product, in order to test the potential of using this newly obtained material as a structural element. Bending was performed on small-scale samples. The main research task is the examination of three types of reinforcement, which differ from each other in position, orientation, and number of layers of reinforcement, using two different types of adhesives: epoxy adhesive and Melamine Urea Formaldehyde Resins (MUF). The composite material was produced in four different combinations in relation to the orientation and position of the reinforcement in the layup. The applied reinforcement is defined through three different configurations (EK1, EK2, and EK3) and a fourth control sample (EK4). Each configuration was produced by applying the two previously mentioned types of adhesives. The research findings showed that in the case of samples produced by applying CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) using epoxy adhesive, it significantly affected the increase in bending strength and flexural modulus of elasticity. The average improvement in bending strength is 32.9%, 33.2%, and 38.7%, i.e., the flexural modulus of elasticity is 54.1%, 50.7%, and 54.7%, respectively, for configurations EK1, EK2, and EK3, compared to control sample EK4. During the testing, the test samples from reinforced panels EK1 and EK2 showed partly plastic behavior up to the fracture point, while the diagram for the test samples from reinforced panels EK3 shows elastic behavior to a considerable extent, with a significantly smaller plastic behavior zone. This research proved the impossibility of using melamine-urea formaldehyde adhesive to form a composite product based on veneer and carbon fabric. The greatest contribution of this work is the experimentally verified and confirmed result of the possibility of applying poplar veneer to design structural elements in LVL using epoxy adhesive.Special Issue New Advances in Strengthening of Structural Timbe
Reworking Studio Design Education Driven by 3D Printing Technologies
The advances and proliferation of digital technologies impact architectural practice asking for a revision of not only design production but also the education of future professionals. Using a case study from the University of Belgrade—Faculty of Architecture, this paper examines the efficient application of 3D printing as a design tool and opportunities for the implementation of this technology in architectural education. The research goal was to establish an educational framework for the studio course that was appropriate to local settings, starting with a review of educational approaches and the usage of 3D printing in architectural design. Starting with the premise that there is a bidirectional relationship between design and its tool, the educational framework for architectural design studio was proposed, tested in real educational settings, and evaluated. The results indicate that the use of 3D printing in studio course proved to be an effective tool for design exploration and presentation that supports (1) linking the logical way of thinking that requires parametric modeling with concept-based thinking; (2) change in mindset that occurs in the design process when students have a physical model in front of them to assess; and (3) improvement of deep understanding of spatial cognition among students as well as their competencies related to the use of the specific technology in the design process. Toward Regenerative Sustainability: A Passive Design Comfort Assessment Method of Indoor Environment
The fact that people spend a major part of their lifetime indoors, together with the lethal COVID-19 pandemic which caused people to spend even more time inside buildings, has drawn attention to the significance of achieving Agenda 2030 SD goal number three: good health and well-being, in reference to the indoor environment. The research subject is the health and well-being of building users explored through the sustainable (passive) design principles having an impact on the comfort and quality of the indoor environment. It is set within a regenerative sustainability framework encompassing the physiological, biophilic, psychological and social aspects of comfort. The Comfort Assessment Model’s categories, to some extent, rely on the first author’s doctoral thesis, with further modifications regarding the passive design criteria and indicators. A comparative analysis of the model with international sustainability certification (rating) systems has been performed, proving the significance of introducing more passive design comfort (health) related criteria into sustainability assessment models. In addition, a focus group of expert architects contributed to the research conclusions by responding to a questionnaire addressing the issues of sustainability, comfort and passive design, in terms of the health and well-being of building users, which confirmed the relevance of applied passive design measures for providing comfort indoors and fulfilling sustainable development goals
DANUrB+ project / Danube urban brend + building regional and local resilience through the valorization of Danube's cultural heritage
Архитектонски факултет у Београду је један од важних учесника пројекта DANUrB+ у оквиру INTERREG подунавске прекограничне сарадње ЕУ. Овај пројекат је усмерен на оснаживање културне и туристичке привреде подунавских малих и средњих градова кроз поновно вредновање њихових материјалне и нематеријалне културне баштине везане за реку Дунав. Главни циљ је стварање свеобухватне просторно-културне мреже, “Дунавске културне променаде”, која би повезивала све заједнице дуж реке и образовала заједнички туристички бренд нудећи тематске путеве и развијајући могућности које могу повећати број посетилаца у регији. Новина коју доноси DANUrB+ налази се у образовању стратешких циљева помоћу акционих планова и иницијатива које локални мали партнери могу применити у подунавским градовима у опадању и промовишу их на инклузиван и делотворан начин, превазилазећи неповољне друштвено-економске прилике. Као један од занимљивих резултата пројекта издвајају се Атлас подунавских градова и Пилот пројекти од великог стратешког значаја за локалну заједницу
Mitigation and adaptation strategies to offset the impacts of climate change on urban health: A European perspective
Climate change threatens urban health, whether that refers to the human or environmental aspects of urban life.
At the same time, initiatives of city regeneration envision alternative forms of the urban environment, where
derelict spaces have the potential to be brought back to life in ways that would not compromise urban health.
Regeneration processes should utilise mitigation and adaptation strategies that consider the future needs and
anticipated role of cities within the context of the discourse about climate change, accounting for expected and
unforeseen impacts and regarding the city as an agent of action rather than a static territory, too complex to
change. Nevertheless, literature implicating these three parameters synchronously, namely, climate change,
cities, and health, has been scarce. This study aims to fill this gap through a systematic literature review,
exploring climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies that can be employed in urban regeneration efforts
seeking to mitigate climate-exacerbated phenomena and their impacts on urban health as well as identifying the
main trends and opportunities overlooked. Findings show that even though the emphasis is given to the physical
actions and impacts of climate change and urban health, an emerging theme is a need to engage civic society in
co-designing urban spaces. Synergistic relationships, collaborations and avoidance of lock-in situations appear to
be the most significant subtopics emerging from this literature review. One main recommendation is the promotion
of a community-driven, inclusive, participatory approach in regeneration projects. That will ensure that
different vulnerabilities can be adequately addressed and that diverse population groups will have equitable
health benefits
A hypothetical model of Dobrović’s New Belgrade: A comparative analysis of the planned and current condition
Рад испитује улогу и могућност примене хипотетичких модела у савременој архитектонско-урбанистичкој пракси у циљу испитивања комплексног односа између
планираног и реализованог. Важан сегмент рада односи се на испитивање разлога из којих
долази до одступања и промена у плановима, a кроз идентификацију њихових слабих и јаких тачака, на примеру Новог Београдa.
Предмет анализе представљају постојеће стање Новог Београда и прва послератна концепција Новог Београда Скица регулације Београда на левој обали Саве из 1946. године аутора архитекте Николе Добровића. Поред тога што представља иницијалну скицу, одабран
план за компарацију, у морфолошком смислу, својом радијалном матрицом представља
својеврстан контраст постојећој ортогоналној матрици Новог Београда и самим тим могућност испитивања две крајности исте идеје о новом центру социјалистичке државе.
Основна претпоставка је да би Скица регулације Београда на левој обали Саве да је изведена, услед свог наизглед, морфолошки и идеолошки посматрано супротног карактера
довела и до формирања драстично другачије слике града, нарочито у погледу функционалности, од оног којег данас познајемо. Међутим, истраживање показује да су разлике мање
од очекиваних, те да се трагови првобитне концепције назиру у тренутном стању упркос
одступању од исте.
Методологија рада заснива се на компарацији два посматрана стања кроз дијалог квалитативних и квантитативних метода укрштањем историјско-интерпретативне анализе и
просторне синтаксе, алатом за квантификовање резултата у области урбане морфологије, резултујући синтезним аналитичким цртежом тренутног и хипотетичког Добровићевог Новог
Београда.The paper examines the role and possibility of applying hypothetical models in contemporary
architectural and urban practice in order to examine the complex relationship between the planned
and realized. An important segment of the paper refers to understanding reasons behind modifications that occur during the implementation of the plan and the identification of the plan’s weak and
strong points, on the example of New Belgrade.
The subject of the analysis is the current condition of New Belgrade and the first post-war conception of New Belgrade Sketch of the regulation of Belgrade on the left bank of the Sava river from
1946 by the architect Nikola Dobrović. In addition to representing the initial sketch, the sketch is
chosen for the comparative analysis because, from a morphological point of view, its radial matrix
represents a kind of contrast to the existing orthogonal street matrix of New Belgrade, thus opening
a possibility of comparing two extremely different takes on the same idea of how the new capital city
of the new socialist state should look like.
The basic assumption is that if the Sketch of the regulation of Belgrade on the left bank of the Sava
river had been carried out, due to its seemingly, morphologically and ideologically opposite character, it would have led to the formation of a drastically different image of the city, especially in terms
of functionality, from the one we know today. However, the research shows that the differences are
smaller than expected, and that traces of the original conception can be seen in the current state
despite the departure from it.
The methodology is based on the comparison of the two observed conditions through a dialogue of qualitative and quantitative methods by crossing a historical-interpretive approach and
space syntax, a tool for quantifying results in the field of urban morphology, resulting in an analytical drawing of the current and hypothetical Dobrović’s New Belgrade

Кratke teze o prostoru arhitektonskog projektovanja
Rukopis autorke dr Milene Grbić, arhitekte, predstavlja bukvar spoznaje i razumevanja
osnovnih alata kojima arhitektonsko projektovanja deluje u prostoru. Jednostavnije,
kratke crtice na teme o procesu arhitektonskog projektovanja.
Rukopis koji je pred nama čini niz od 17 kratkih teza kojima autorka na sažet i praktičan,
iako ni u jednom trenutku lišen sve svoje složenosti, način prenosi znanje o razumevanju
arhitekture kao procesa stvaranja u naspram postavljanju intuitivnog i kreativnog sa
jedne, i racionalnog i objektivnog sa druge strane, formirajući udoban okvir za učenje o
arhitektonskom projektovanju.
Ukazujući na ključne tačke na putu stvaranja arhitektonskog prostora, autorka nas,
kroz ideju o kreiranju prostora, od koncepta i apstrakcije, preko prostornih granica i
organizacije, sve do naracije kao najsloženijeg polja arhitekture, i povratka u fizički
i funkcionalni okvir razumevanja dimenzije uvodi u složeni svet arhitektonskog
projektovanja, te razumevanja njenog procesa i pozicije u arhitekturi kao disciplini.

Enriching Architectural Education with Extracurricular Activities - the Case of the Geometry Adventure Workshop
In this study, we present and analyse the case of the Workshop titled “A Geometric Adven ture in the World of Grasshopper”, realised in September 2023, at the University of Belgrade,
Faculty of Architecture, within the manifestation called “The Week with Architecture”. The
content of the Workshop has been derived from the elective course “Parametric Modelling”,
offered to the first year master students.
After briefly explaining the teaching context in which the Workshop occurred, we present
the content structure divided into four working days, three of which dedicated to introducing
various programming techniques in the Rhino software and its well-known plug-in Grasshop per, and the fourth day left for the Workshop exhibition completing. Aimed at introducing
programming beginners into basic techniques of algorithmic creation of architectural form,
this Workshop started with an in-house developed Grasshopper definition producing various
2D geometric patterns. Based on this simple definition the students learned the fundamental
elements of the visual algorithmic systems. As a result of first day they produced a range of
different geometric patterns based on the p1 symmetry repetition of circles and polygons on a
predefined rectangular grid. The second day of the Workshop was dedicated to the geometry
of spatial curves, and required from the participating students considerably more programming
understanding and an additional research of the field. The third Workshop day was character ized by an integration of the techniques of the first and the second Workshop day. In this final
programming exercise the participants had to use the geometric grid, in terms of distribution
of a chosen spatial curve.
This teaching activity resulted in excellent geometric models created by participating stu dents, exhibited in the form of prints, the last day of the Workshop. All the Workshop commu nication and information exchange was supported and saved in the specially created TEAMS
learning environment. A catalogue of student submissions is in the process of creation. The

introducing new topics and rearranging selected teaching activities
