Planning Micro-Routes in Cultural Tourism: Monastery Route in Ovčar-Kablar Gorge, Serbia
The last few years have completely changed Serbian tourism. The COVID-19 Pandemics, closed borders as its consequence and the general rise of standard have redirected Serbian population from once-in-year seaside travel to multiple short travels in Serbia. This new impulse in tourism has opened many opportunities for more remoted regions in the country with preserved heritage. One such region in Ovčar-Kablar Gorge in Western Serbia, near the city of Čačak. The magnificent scenery of the gorge is under state protection as a landscape of outstanding features. It is in addition “enriched” by cultural heritage – nine monasteries, two forest churches and one cave-church, developed between the 14th-18th centuries. The concentration of the sacral heritage is so important locally that the gorge is unofficially known as “Serbian Athos”. This paper presents the recent efforts done in the local spatial plan, created by “Gradac” Public Enterprise from Čačak, to address this potential through the development of cultural-tourist micro-route in the gorge
Aesthetic manipulation of the experience of architectural space – through an analysis of christian sacral architecture of the second half of the XX century [46th Salon of Architecture, 2024]

Decline or Growth? (Re) considering the Development Patterns of the Border Towns in the Republic of North Macedonia
The paper focuses on the border towns of the Republic of North Macedonia (RNM), geographically
located in the eastern and western part of the country, highlighting the specificities of their
morphology in the context of their recent development and/or decline. The selected examples belong
to two different planning regions of the RNM: the East region – Delchevo, and the Southwest region -
Struga. Providing an overview of the identified directions and patterns of their urban expansion, it will
be possible to determine the morphological features which have both affected and reflected their
general urban transformations. Currently, the condition of the border towns from the East region
indicates the increasing marginalisation and, consequently - decline, while those from the Southwest
region register progress and growth on the socio-economic and spatial level. Due to these drastic
differences, the paper will provide a comparative analysis of their urban form, simultaneously
targeting both the micro and the macro level. Considering the latest studies on urban morphology and
its relationship with overall urban development, the paper will also address the identified problems
and trends, proposing the planning recommendations for the future transformations and their
sustainability in the long run
Social Media as a Database to Plan Tourism Development: “Venac” Historic Core in Sombor, Serbia
One of the most significant novelties in urban planning last decades has been the inclusion of ICT tools. The most common approach is to form geographical and territorial information systems (GIS and TIS) to create, monitor and visualise urban plans. However, accurate statistical data is necessary in this process, which can be a challenge for the sectors with fast development, such as a tourism. It exemplifies a fast developing, unconventional and often hard-to-control sector. Official statistical data for tourism quickly become outdated for urban planning. In the other side, tourism has vibrant social-media coverage and rich available e-data shared through it. Although such e-data can be found everywhere today, it is still new for formal documents like urban plans.
The core aim of this research is to show how the e-data in social media can be utilised to analyse city space for a new urban plan. The case in the research in the “Venac” Historic Core of Sombor. Despite being the best-preserved medium-sized city in Serbia, Sombor peripheral location in the country hindered its development. Nevertheless, the recent rise of cultural tourism means that Sombor has been rediscovered for tourists. The city authorities recently initiated a new urban plan for the regeneration of “Venac” Area, where local experts and the team from the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade worked together with e-data from online social media to address the recent tourism development in planning measures. This research analyses four locally popular social media applications: Instagram, Google Maps, Google reviews, and Snapchat.LINK: https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-031-54096-7_22#citea
Urban Planning Across Europe: Insights into Planning Cultures of Switzerland, Greece, and Serbia
The research explores the planning cultures in three distinct European contexts: Solothurn (Switzerland), Patras (Greece), and Belgrade (Serbia). Grounded in the conceptual framework of planning culture, which posits that spatial planning practices are deeply influenced by societal, institutional, and professional contexts, the analysis examines three key dimensions: social setting, planning process, and planning environment. The multiple case study methodological approach employed in this research illuminates both the diversity and commonalities in planning cultures, highlighting the importance of cultivating context-sensitive planning practices. The Solothurn case exemplifies a decentralised, consensus-based planning culture rooted in Swiss direct democracy, where collaborative processes and independent expertise are pivotal in shaping innovative spatial solutions. In contrast, the Patras and Belgrade cases reveal the challenges of centralised decision-making, administrative fragmentation, and the marginalisation of planning professionals and public participation in Greece and Serbia, respectively. On the one hand, these findings underscore the profound influence of political, economic, and cultural factors on the conceptualisation, implementation, and experience of spatial planning across diverse European contexts. On the other hand, the analysis suggests that effective spatial planning must be tailored to local cultural environments rather than applying universal models. The research ultimately contributes to the broader discourse on the cultural embeddedness of planning and offers insights for practitioners, policymakers, and scholars seeking to develop more nuanced, adaptive approaches to addressing contemporary urban challenges
New Generative and AI Design Methods for Transportation Systems and Urban Mobility Design, Planning, Operation, and Analysis: Contribution to Urban Computing Theory and Methodology
The paper places its contribution within the domain of architectural and urban computing, artificial intelligence application in urban and architectural studies, or more broadly in spatial and urban planning, analysis/analytics, design, and operation, all considering new methodologies. Having new computational design and problem-solving methods in mind as a primary investigative subject and instrument (AI and generative design methods in particular), the author aimed to test the range of possibilities of their application in the named contribution area, forming corresponding theoretical foundations of thus established design and research conduct. Such an aim demanded an elaborate theoretical review so as to provide the necessary background for understanding the most recent stage of technological development within the digital architectural, urban, and spatial design and computing, valid corresponding terminology, groups of targeted computational design methods, and available software tools for their application, all within the functional systematic cross-disciplinary approach to the construction of design problem-solving methodology with regards to spatial and data/computational sciences. The approach has been interpreted through condensed tabular and diagrammatic information on conducted case studies, used to support, and illustrate stated theoretical objectives. Due to the large area of application, the focus of the more specific inquiries has been narrowed to one of the urban systems and planning concerns - the urban mobility and transportation system - first by employing all its modalities, urban infrastructure, and facilities on a larger scale to define operative research environment, and second by targeting specific design questions and tasks within the defined domain, including examples of the ways in which they can be modelled as abstract or real-world problems. The Grand Paris transportation network and region have been chosen for the experimental field of operation, while supportive material for establishing generative design problem modelling and solution methodology has been provided through specific tasks addressing network graph design and operationalisation, and urban movement design through selected computational problem-solving methods.Nezavisni projekti: Design Intelligence, Computational Design Methods in Architecture and Urbanism: Generative and AI Design Methods, Algorithmic Thinking in Architecture and Urbanism, AI in Architecture and Urbanism (Dragana Ćirić ©, (@aira, Advanced Intelligence Research in Architecture), 2019-
Conceptual project of a health center in the City neighbourhood in Podgorica [The 24th Salon of architecture Novi Sad, 2024]
The proposed conceptual design for the Health Centre in City Kvart, Podgorica, reinterprets the conventional healthcare typology by introducing a landscaped inner courtyard as the primary spatial and experiential focus. Instead of the sterile and monolithic character typical of such facilities, the project establishes a calm exterior envelope that encloses a contrasting green core offering visual relief and acoustic protection from the urban context. Waiting areas and communal spaces are oriented toward this courtyard to encourage moments of pause, social interaction, and psychological comfort. A carefully selected palette of materials and textures reinforces warmth and tactility, while the integration of nature within the architectural composition supports restorative and therapeutic processes. The inner garden thus becomes not only a place of retreat, but a central component in shaping the emotional and sensory identity of the Health Centre
