Calibrating the parallax view: Understanding the critical moments of Yugoslav post-socialist turn
In this article, we seek to provide a new line of sight referring to specificities of the neoliberal turn in post-socialist societies and corresponding transformations of space. By employing the methodological approach that side-by-side explores two mutually exclusive strategies of analytical and empirical survey, we intend to tackle the question of irreducible antinomies pertinent to architectural research methodologies. Block 23 of the Central Zone of New Belgrade, designed by Branislav Karadžić, Božidar Janković, and Aleksandar Stjepanović (1968), has been widely recognised and aptly studied as one of the highlights of modern urban planning and design, conceived and realised in the period of late socialism in Belgrade (Serbia, former Yugoslavia). Featuring a notion of a “parallax gap,” we presume that the reading of Block 23 through two close yet clearly distinctive perspectives can bring a new scope of knowledge and point to the gap inscribed in the buildings themselves. The first point of view is empirical, centred on the notion of everyday life, and concerns the interpretation and use of space by its inhabitants. The second one is analytical, determined by the work of the architect and architectural theoretician, Branislav Milenković. We start from their point of contact and seek to find a shift in the diverging discursive positions producing a parallax gap. By way of architectural drawing, we explore and theorise new possibilities opened up by the actual buildings: interstitial, intermediary, transitional spaces, and spatial in-betweens. We hope to demonstrate the pursuit of both meticulously planned and dynamically conceived spaces open for the unpredictable was not only a way to respond to specific Yugoslav socio-political realities, but that it fostered the capacity of architecture to accommodate the future population and socio-economic transformations.Urban Planning, 2024, Volume 9,

Cultural Sensitivity and Social Well-Being in Embassy Architecture: Educational Approaches and Design Strategies
Over the past two decades, the expanding environmental and ecological crises highlight the need to broaden the concept of sustainability to encompass support for cultural sensitivity and social well-being. This study explores the role of architectural education in fostering cultural sensitivity and social well-being in embassy architecture within a framework of environment–behavior studies. It starts from the premise that the architectural values of a culture are deeply rooted in the relationship between the users, architecture, and surrounding environment. State-sponsored architectural works (e.g., embassies, consulates, cultural centers) built outside the country are viewed as symbolic representations of a nation’s diplomatic and cultural influence. These architectural typologies hold a unique potential to act as bridges for cross-cultural dialogue and foster a collective sense of global citizenship. In order to develop and assess the teaching curriculum, a specific assignment was given to master’s students of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade, with the aim to explore how engineering education can be adopted to motivate students toward sustainable attitudes and design solutions. While traditional diplomatic architecture emphasizes inward-facing, fortress-like design strategies, establishing physical and symbolic barriers between the embassy’s territory and the surrounding context, this research advocates for a more holistic approach oriented toward cultural sustainability, openness, and integration within an urban context. Key findings highlight creative solutions for balancing cultural representation with functional requirements while prioritizing community engagement, environmental responsibility, and user well-being. By demonstrating the two distinctive architectural strategies, this study contributes to the culturally responsive embassy design within the broader context of sustainable architectural education

Energy Transition and Climate Change: Scenarios for Places in the Mediterranean Area
We live in a moment with an important effervescence in the energy transition towards renewable sources. The energy transition needs space/territory for the deployment of renewable energies. The ultimate aim of policies that foster energy transition is mitigating and adapting to climate change. Climate change is a current global problem that already causes problems (heat waves, floods, torrential rain, etc.). Its effects will increase if we do not decarbonize our development model. The challenge of energy transition has been one of the key European policies since the European Union declared the Climate Emergency in 2019. Europe may be at serious risk from the effects of climate change, with one of the most vulnerable areas being the Mediterranean region. It is against this historical, sociopolitical and climatic backdrop that this research focuses on analysing the future of places related to policies, plans and actions in the Mediterranean context. These scenarios show the special role that placemaking will have in the future in areas with unique climatic conditions. This research addresses policies, plans and strategies, as best practices, that are dealing with energy transition challenge in three countries of the Mediterranean area: Spain, Greece and Montenegro. In every case study the different levels of government and actions are analysed. The focus is to underline how these policies/plans will influence the future of placemaking as a more targeted rationale. Energy transition needs space/territory for its development, and places are crucial because they relate people with its space. The last goal of the research is know if energy transition policies/plans preserve and enhance the health and well-being of society through its places
Between planned and executed : A multiscale spatial analysis of the monument Prozivka
This research delves into the dialogue between monuments and their context, focusing on the Prozivka monument, a socialist Yugoslav monument dedicated to the People’s Liberation Struggle. Created by renowned sculptor Oto Logo, the monument was erected in 1977 as a centrepiece in Prozivka, the largest socialist mass housing neighbourhood in Subotica, Serbia. The analysis follows the monument from its conception to the current state and takes a multi-scale approach, examining the monument’s relationship with its material and immaterial context, from the urban plan to the level of detail. The study draws on archival materials, including technical documentation, restoration projects, old photographs and newspapers. The paper is divided into two sections. The first section provides a brief biography of Oto Logo, highlighting his notable works, exhibitions and awards. The second section is dedicated to the Prozivka monument, one of Logo’s largest creations
Facade Panel Parametrisation in the Modernist Heritage of New Belgrade: A Multiple-Case Study
Most of the modernist heritage buildings in New Belgrade are over half a century old. Additionally, there is a growing need for new residential and commercial spaces in the city of Belgrade, and New Belgrade with its incompleteness might integrate them. Digitalisation can play a key role in archiving, maintaining, and developing this part of a city, which underlines the necessity to convert its analogue form into a digital one as soon as possible. But how to efficiently perform that conversion? The parametric approach enables plenty of mutually similar elements to be generated for a short time, based on varying the values of parameters defined, which is especially useful when such elements are heavily repeated. Therefore, this research focuses on the geometric parametrisation of facade panels of various technological manufacturing processes and of diverse types of multifamily residential buildings located in the Central Zone of New Belgrade. It aims to identify key variable-wise characteristics of the facade panel morphology as well as to establish parameters relevant to describing these characteristics. The methodology implies multiple-case studies, where the parameters to be included in the parametrisation-wise algorithm are determined in relation to varying the panel morphology from group to group of mutually identical panels. The goal of the research, on the one hand, is to further develop a methodology implemented so as to become applicable to the study of other similar architectural heritage objects, whereas, on the other hand, it is to discover opportunities for examining the facade panel design from different aspects. Also, the paper contributes to the development of more efficient digitisation based on digital automation as well as to the greater encouragement of the restoration and conservation processes of facade panels. The usage of proposed parameters imposes itself as an efficient way to flexibly describe the morphology of considered facade panels of various technological manufacturing processes, regardless of the building type those panels belong to

Diagrammatics: Design Intelligence System, Methodology, and Strategy in Design Research and Science
The term Design Intelligence System, Methodology, and Strategy indicates a new digital modality of architecturally constructed and visualized diagrammatic research framework and environment. Aiming to facilitate, articulate, and support any kind of documentary, scientific, and creative investigative practice with large amounts of data in a formalized way, DI system, methodology, and strategy have been proposed for consideration to be included into the fields of Design Research and Design Science. It has been argued that they can offer a specific response to various research requirements and make a contribution at the level of methodology, instrumentation, and research strategy. Beside the control and guidance of data-operations in line with research subjects and questions, the system preserves design research procedures and dynamics of problem-solving and decision-making as formal inscription, or information-architecture, enabling one to visualize maps and lines of inference and connectivity between different information and arguments, and to acknowledge main issues in delivering a proof and carrying out valid reasoning. Regarding the fact that, alongside extensive use as a means of artistic exploration, this kind of digital framework, formalization, and system has not been substantially questioned as a means of reliable and functional scientific research in the targeted Design Research and Design Science fields, the paper will address these issues through comments on the system’s attributes, arguments, relevance, and contributions, and analysis of the performed test-studies, their development stages, and the system’s determinants, which have led to its final eleven criteria-form. The field of Diagrammatics has been proposed as a broader context due to the Design Intelligence System’s central diagrammatic properties and modes of operation
