The Role of Architectural Education Models in Sustainable Transition of Cities
As one of the pillars for design professionals, design education in architecture and related fields contributes to the built environment's sustainable future. However, despite the dedication of educators, the evolving emphasis of design pedagogy is still not entirely accepted in the academic setting. Concerns regarding outmoded and static approaches in higher education have recently triggered some new insights causing the updating, upgrading and improvement of programs. Consequently, critical thinking and inquiry, creativity and innovation, research and investigation, collaboration and civic engagement, supported by technical competences, have become increasingly valued in the contemporary design pedagogy. In keeping with this patter
n, the Sustainable City master's program at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Architecture is organized around a project-oriented methodology. The process is finalized through a Civil Initiative Project Proposal data set established on the Teams platform, that addresses requests for proposals and several ongoing competitions. A Civil Initiative Project Proposal data set created on the Teams platform completes the process and offers the opportunity for active participation in solving the different issues facing local communities
Crteži i skice u arhitekturi [Furundžić Danilo]
Creative pedagogies for placemaking training in territorial planning science: A transnational overview
Education in the 21st century is facing many challenges due to the rapid development
of technologies, data overflow and the call for interdisciplinarity to achieve more sustainable
results. Teaching staff dealing with placemaking have a critical role to play
in the formation and education of future generations of planners. They should apply
learning and research approaches based on a sensitive and comprehensive understanding
of academic, technical, social, environmental and artistic elements that require
bespoke techniques and an ever-changing curriculum. However, the formal education
of architects and urban planners should be reframed to deal with the real-world places
and needs of local communities, as well as community initiatives, local knowledge
and organizational and creative capacities towards transformative experiences. The
concept of placemaking emphasizes the need for strengthening connections between
people and the places they share, considering for this purpose the active involvement
of the local community. This chapter presents several cases of project-oriented and
place-based learning approaches from Brazil, Israel, Portugal and Serbia. It intends to
discuss how the use of placemaking pedagogies can enrich the learning process of
all involved. The analysis of cases allows us to highlight that some of the interesting
experiences in placemaking resulted from community initiatives, which are not always
anchored in formal/statutory planning procedures. This poses the challenge of how to
translate such locally rooted processes, methodologies, results and knowledge into a
creative and innovative pedagogical training approach. Bringing planning students to
local communities and exposing them to different proposals and needs calls for revisiting
seminars, studios and classes – both the design and programmes to fully integrate
the community and firmly anchor local resources in these training activities. In this
approach, the crucial benefits are strengthening and enlarging the context for learning
and enabling universities to serve as catalysts for urban revitalization and making
places more tailored to people
Opera through atmospheric narratives [abstract]
By analyzing the relationship between character portrayal in contemporary opera productions and the creation of architectural atmosphere, this study interprets how theatrical staging can serve as a clear
platform for critiquing societal norms, focusing on the position of women, particularly those depicted as sex workers, through a comparative analysis of various productions of Verdi’s “La Traviata.” The study examines directorial approaches to portraying diverse facets of Violetta Valéry, a prominent marginalized female character. Through a comparative analysis of three distinct stagings that underscore different dimensions of her complex personality, the research investigates the interplay between character portrayal and spatial representation of pivotal moments in the libretto. This interpretive analysis, framed by the architectural responses in realizing visionary opera staging concepts (Regieoper), sheds light on how architectural choices reflect societal attitudes. By emphasizing varied facets of Violetta’s character, these productions offer novel insights into familiar narratives, amplifying subtle messages that might otherwise be overlooked. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the potency of architectural atmospheres in visual storytelling and shaping perceptions of marginalized individuals, underscoring the potential for theatrical productions to serve as platforms for social critique and catalysts for change. The nuanced use of atmosphere enriches our interpretation of Violetta’s character, revealing layers of her personality and societal constraints that traditional staging might overlook. The spatial dynamics and scenic design not only frame her narrative but also evoke emotional and psychological responses that deepen our understanding of her plight and resilience

With the adoption of the UN Agenda 2030, UNESCO brought new recommendations for the integration of Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) into the teaching process. SDG 11 - "Sustainable cities and communities" is of particular importance
for urban planning education. In parallel, two European umbrella organizations, the European Council of Spatial Planners
(ECTP-CEU) and the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP), offer recommendations for new competencies for
the profession of urban planners. This work aims to systematize the key guidelines for the development of higher education in the
field of urban planning in relation to the recommendations of UNESCO, ECTP-CEU and AESOP. Based on the qualitative
analysis of the content of the mentioned documents, key aspects of importance for the formation of the curriculum structure in
accordance with the concept of sustainable development will be singled out. In addition, the stated results can be used as a
methodological tool for checking the compatibility of existing study programs in urban planning in relation to the expected
competencies and global requirements for education for sustainable development
How to Close the Loop: Plan Control and Planning Enhancement Through Monitoring and Evaluation
According to domestic legislation, spatial and urban planning is an activity of public interest, aimed at managing space and spatial development. It ensures that adopted principles are implemented from the highest, republican, to the local level, and that areas are viewed comprehensively, within the context of broader territories - horizontal and vertical coordination of planning. The term planning itself implies that it involves (i) strategic conceptualization in advance, (ii) systematic implementation, (iii) observation, monitoring, and evaluation of planning effects, and (iv) serves as a basis for subsequent phases of the same activity, enabling the process to be adjusted and directed in line with promoted values and objectives, based on previously achieved results. In this study, we explore key aspects of (iii) - monitoring and evaluation of plans, with the idea of identifying specific (a) procedural steps/phases and (b) basic criteria for each of them that need to be monitored to determine the effects of the plan in relation to the set goals. Of course, such an undertaking exceeds the scope and capacity of this research, but the ambition remains to establish, even if incomplete, a basic framework of the process, and to draw attention to the practical aspects of this important topic
