Recycling Beauty and the Beauty of Recycling: Comparative Analysis of the Colossus of Constantine and the Tin Can Castle

    Get PDF
The subject of this investigation is two distinct projects in which a common critical method can be identified – recycling. The first project is the ‘Recycling Beauty’ exhibition, designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA and curated by Salvatore Settis, Anna Anguissola, and Denise La Monica. It represents the third chapter in Fondazione Prada’s comprehensive study on the contemporaneity of ancient art, exploring the paradoxical and delicate relationship between fragments from the past and the cultural diversity of the contemporary world. On the other hand, this research encounters the latest design project arising from the enduring collaboration between Kosmos Architects and Château Chapiteau - the Tin Can Castle, known as the Château Chapiteau Refugee House. This paper primarily aims to investigate the recycling conceptions in two cases thoroughly and, afterwards, by employing the methodology of comparative analysis, examine their shared characteristics, differences, and specificities concerning contemporary architecture discourse

This paper focuses on the concept of more-than-human design, which involves the inclusion of non-human actors, such as technology and infrastructure, in the design process. Specifically, the paper examines the technology of the urban environment as infrastructure and its potential use in designing complex and dynamic urban spaces that cater to different types of users. The paper explores how environmental data can act as a bridge between humans and nature, promoting empathy towards more-than-human perspectives. It emphasizes the need to question the human-centric approach to design and to form new design practices that integrate different abilities and contextual significance of data. The aim is to establish interactions between humans, objects, and other things through design practices that recognize and integrate different abilities, both human and artificial while overcoming technological determinism that dominates many narratives. This is achieved by expanding design theory and methodology towards "more-than-human design." The paper presents a review of existing approaches and methods from various fields as new input in considering subjective parameters of urban experience and new design practices in line with "more-than-human design" paradigms. The paper illustrates the urban user experience through the example of pedestrian traffic in interchange systems. While subjective parameters of users can be shown through various surveys, the paper emphasizes the importance of visual perception in collecting spatial information and its connection with cognitive processes. Developing eye-tracking technologies is becoming increasingly popular in spatial cognition research. The paper proposes using visualization of eye-tracking data to create mental maps that help in the cognitive mapping of the urban pedestrian experience in complex processes. The processed results can be used as input for user interfaces and new design practices. Designers need to take the underpinning technology seriously before they can design with it

With active methods of protecting industrial heritage, such as urban regeneration and revitalization, we not only preserve the heritage of the past but also create dynamic, functional spaces adapted to the needs of modern society. This approach is effective for reviving, changing, or reusing industrial heritage brownfields. The subject of the research is industrial heritage in Timisoara on brownfield sites. Brownfield sites in Timisoara present challenging yet potentially valuable areas that offer opportunities for restoration and development. Their significance in the current context arises from the necessity for sustainable urban development in existing but neglected regions. Revitalizing brownfield sites in Timisoara can establish a cohesive urban environment while reinforcing the city's identity. The concept of "cultural gates of the city" entails creating structures that highlight key access points and central locations within the urban framework, serving as significant city landmarks both physically and functionally. The research aims to identify optimal models for transforming industrial facilities into vibrant cultural hubs that foster creativity, education, and community interaction. These hubs act as catalysts for positive social transformations, promote cultural engagement, enhance social unity within the community, and strike a balance between preserving historical contexts and adapting urban spaces to modern needs. The anticipated outcomes include guidelines that promote sustainable revitalization and regeneration of industrial heritage sites

    No full text
Purpose The surge of digital technologies and information communication technologies poses a challenge to traditional placemaking, influencing how people live, communicate and connect with their environments. In response, placemaking practices are integrating emerging digital technologies, giving rise to digital placemaking. This digital approach aims to present new opportunities for establishing a sense of place, encouraging unique interactions and adding value to communities in social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects. Design/methodology/approach This paper aims to examine the current landscape of digital tools and apps that facilitate digital placemaking. Conducting an extensive literature review, the research evaluates these tools based on their positive contributions to placemaking, categorizing them according to the aspects they enhance in the placemaking process. These aspects include social dynamics, cultural influences, environmental considerations, artistic qualities, heritage preservation, support for human well-being, urban development and opportunities for digital collaboration among citizens. Additionally, the paper explores digital pedagogy for placemaking, analyzing various tools for their educational approach, knowledge production methods and learning outcomes. Findings The findings indicate a growing trend in utilizing digital tools for placemaking, driven by technological advancements like augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence and the internet of things. Similar to traditional placemaking, digital practices are collaborative and context-dependent, requiring engagement from multiple stakeholders for optimal success. Notably, successful digital placemaking apps often incorporate interactivity and multimodality. Digital collaborative platforms can significantly impact placemaking and sustainable urban design, serving as effective tools for both bottom-up and top-down knowledge production and learning related to placemaking. Research limitations/implications The findings of this study must be seen considering certain limitations. The scoping review utilized analysis of most relevant bibliometric databases, however, in the domain of digital placemaking there are undertakings by private companies, nongovernmental as well as governmental organizations which are not cited in the scientific databases. This limitation was tackled by using conventional search engines like Google and Bing to identify and study such projects. Also, it must be noted that the digital domain is rapidly developing and being integrated in digital placemaking. Even more, the artificial intelligence technology, which is being applied across all disciplines, with so far unforeseen possibilities, should be further examined how it is being adopted and implemented in the domain of digital placemaking and which are its impacts in the placemaking processes and outcomes. Originality/value Despite these advancements, many digital tools lack a comprehensive approach to address the various aspects of sustainability in placemaking. Consequently, further research is needed to develop digital tools that adopt a holistic approach, ensuring justifiability and feasibility in social, environmental and economic terms. Furthermore, in alignment with the goals of the EU Green Deal, incorporating Circular Economy principles into the development of new digital placemaking methods and tools is crucial.Petrovski, A., Djukic, A., Maric, J. and Kazak, J. No full text
The main research problem relates to the possibilities of applying contemporary principles of cultural heritage preservation in practice. Its examination is the focus of teaching in cultural heritage preservation at the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade. In the case study of the Military Kitchen within the Belgrade Fortress, and through the development of student conceptual solutions for its revitalisation, the possibilities for translating the guidelines for preserving cultural heritage from their theoretical to practical dimensions were examined. Designing sustainable solutions for the preservation and integration of cultural heritage in the contemporary context indicates real possibilities for the simultaneous respect of the preservation principles of cultural heritage and the fitting of contemporary architectural expression.

    Get PDF
In the circumstances of the 21st-century digital and technological turn, and due to the burst of the cosmopolitan way of living, the urban environment has gradually transformed in its appearance and identity. The loss of object singularity in urban context due to continuous variability and functional indeterminacy blurs the boundaries between architectural and urban scale, personal and social experience. Through an interdisciplinary framework, this paper deals with the fluidity phenomenon instrumentalisation through value-based research of renominated architectural practices in creating an authentic methodological research model that connects urban dynamics and architectural design methods, techniques and instruments in shaping a contemporary spatial experience. The resulting methodological model employs an analytic graphic narrative to formulate a strategy integrating fluidity into the process of architectural design. The paper explains how architectural design, as a cultural practice, employs fluidity to incorporate dynamics and needs, strategically enhancing the expression of urban values, requirements, and narratives.Articles in press are accepted, peer reviewed articles that are not yet assigned to volumes/issues, but are citable using DOI

Production of regulatory freamwork for embassy buildings and its influence on city development

Zaključna razmatranja govore o neophodnosti interdisciplinarnog pristupa i osnaživanju različitih aktera, sa ciljem održivog razvoja i balansa urbane bezbednosti i arhitektonsko-urbanističke regulative

Cities have become the dominant contemporary ecosystem of human existence. With all of the problems that this way of living generates, the dynamics and level of opportunities and connections it offers continue to attract global population. Although recent pandemic conditions and possibilities for remote work created a drive towards city escape, and an increased interest into all sorts of housing opportunities in a more natural environment, buildings in cities, weather of individual or collective, remain the dominant building typology. As such, buildings need to address the global ecological crisis, which is becoming more and more evident even to the most distrustful sceptics. Primarily pollution, but also energy insecurity, energy poverty, climate change, poor indoor comfort conditions – these are just some of the problems that living in contemporary cities bring along

    No full text
Fast global changes affect cities from both economic and social standpoints. The COVID 19 pandemic has completely reshaped urban life and led to a greater respect for social connectedness, mental health and well-being. During the pandemic, people went to parks, green areas and picnic areas more regularly, which showed the importance of the availability of public areas for exercising, stress relief and social interaction. In addition to improving the environment, green areas are crucial for rest and relaxation from the fast pace of urban life. This paper explores the potential of specific areas to encourage citizens to adopt a healthier lifestyle and increase their well-being, focusing on the cultural landscape of the historic Srpske Toplice (Gornji Šeher) neighborhood in Banja Luka, a segment of urban and architectural heritage that has preserved elements of local traditional architecture and culture. This neighbourhood, known for its hot springs, was built under the Ottomans and has a unique combination of natural and architectural elements. The research discusses the importance of the connection between people and their environment, highlighting how cultural heritage and a sense of place can enhance citizens’ mental health and well-being when utilized for therapeutic purposes. The cultural landscape of Srpske Toplice was built between a green area (Starčevica Nature Park) and a blue area (Vrbas River). This paper presents a case study that aims to enhance our understanding of landscapes by considering the cultural, spiritual, emotional, physical and social well-being of communities.Online firs
