Action placemaking in Belgrade, Serbia : Gardening as a game-changer of an adaptive urban system

    No full text
Urban gardens have an important role in reconnecting nature and urban environment since their notion is related to culture and everyday life. Focusing on the Belgrade area of Donji Dorcol, the paper examines the application of the urban gardening approach, based on the synergy of dwelling culture and specific social and cultural needs of local inhabitants. Urban gardens in Belgrade are developed spontaneously (often illegally) as self-organized citizens’ acts. Nevertheless, they promote the values of an active relationship between users and immediate residential surrounding, contributing to the overall comfort of residents and their attitude toward the living environment. Also, urban gardens are not only the places for producing food in financially challenging times, but, above all, the specific nodes associated with socialisation and a “sense of home”. Recognising the benefits of urban gardens, while raising the awareness of this concept in a city, influences the upgraded perception of urban green infrastructure. Consequently, the effects of the action placemaking directed to the future creation of new garden spots could benefit the city on several levels - from the improvement of landscape quality, to the (co)creation and elaboration of an Adaptive Urban System for Belgrade

Architectural Concept : (Op)positional Infinity of the City

This paper analyzes the role of the architectural concept in the creation and life of the city. Aiming to identify the urban qualities in the concept, I introduce the distinction between the first and the second object of architecture, where the former represents the architectural concept, which then materializes its authenticity in the latter, that is, architecture’s real state. Within this temporal order of architectural creation, the paper focuses on the transition from the first object to the second, in which the (urban) reality is assumed to be altered by producing the architectural concept. In explaining such alteration, I employ the dialectics between concept and context. My main hypothesis is that to define the architectural concept necessarily implies the definition of its context, that is, the representation of its real exteriority. At the urban level, the inevitable particularity of architecture becomes an aesthetic quality, thanks to which the impossible task of de-fining the city is overcome and made irrelevant for reaching the state of (urban) conjunction. With every architectural concept being realized, the urban reality becomes altered, or multiplied. The urban contextualization, in this sense, implies not simple summation, but rather conjunction of at least two different concepts, whose difference, however, originates from the act of fundamental disjunction. To explain this paradox, I employ Hegel’s notion of aufheben, aiming to reconcile the radical architectural opposition between the conceptual and the contextual, in favor of the idea of the multiplicity of realized concepts – that is, second objects of architecture. What in architecture appears as an opposition of concept and context, serves on the urban level to overcome the problem of (contextual) finitude of the city, and then produce a new, positive difference within it

Topological Interlocking Assembly: Introduction to Computational Architecture

    Get PDF
Topological interlocking assembly (TIA) and computational architecture treat form as an emergent property of a material system, where the final shape results from the interplay of geometries and geometric interdependencies influenced by contextual constraints (material, structure, and fabrication). This paper posits that TIA is an ideal pedagogical tool for introducing students to computational architecture, and its theoretical foundations and design principles. Specifically, defining TIA as a material system provides a robust educational approach for engaging students with computation; fostering design processes through bottom-up, hands-on investigations; expressing design intents as procedural logic; understanding generative geometric rules; and exploring the flexibility of parametric variations. The methodology is detailed and illustrated through a design workshop and study unit from the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs at the Faculty for the Built Environment, University of Malta. Four case studies of TIA—of tetrahedra, cones, octahedra, and osteomorphic blocks—demonstrate how these exercises introduce students to computational thinking, parametric design, and fabrication techniques. This paper discusses the advantages and limitations of this pedagogical methodology, concluding that integrating computational architecture in education shifts students’ design processes to investigation and innovation-based approaches, enabling them to address contemporary design challenges through context-driven solutions

Form destabilization: between reality and projection

Moving from the concepts of project, space, and form wholeness problematizes the dematerialization of the world, allowing the production of architectural space as a place of new reality – between reality and its projection. Contemporary architectural openness enables the acceptance of diversity as the highest quality, in a zone where nothing is static or predefined. Shifting from symmetry towards complexity opens fields of world and object variability. This means that ambiguities evolve into the visibility of change. Their positioning on the same conceptual plane, between actual and potential reality, opens the possibility for multivalence. For architecture, this means that space is observed as a variety of movement intensities, where the mechanisms for form generation are established through digital media. The stratification of space in open fragmentation hides the logic of a system that, as an organizational principle, uses its opposite. In the plane of architectural production, the neutral framework of universal space for the production of diversity is translated into a digital one. A new definition of values and criteria, based on variability and potentiality, serves to introduce a metanarrative of multiplicity in terms of manifold ways of decoding the world and reality. What is confirmed is the capacity for the contemporaneity of architecture, in which the virtual appears as a post-digital formal state. The exploration of the openness and incompleteness of architecture is offered through the definition of a new stylistic key – as a new spatiotemporal and formal concept. What characterizes this temporal digital paradigm is the fragmentation of the homogeneous linear flow of time, which occurs by shifting mechanisms in favor of its new experience. The model is treated equally as a method that opens the alteration of the architectural form
